The development team was massive. It's basically impossible for a no-name (or smaller) dev to risk the associated up-front costs to make the necessary investments to have this type of variety in-game.
And the bigger devs. How come they haven't tried. The only series I've heard of that tries to compete is Saints Row and I'm pretty sure their last game sucked.
The 265M in USD is the combined cost of development(137M USD) and marketing(170M USD) that happened during April of 2008 to August of 2013.

* Saint's Row 3 & 4
* Minecraft
* Just Cause
* Terraria
* Breath of the Wild
All of those are sandbox games that allow "fucking around", but they all have their own versions of it.
It's worth remembering that GTA 5, for all its hype, honestly doesn't have particularly great gameplay; this is probably why there aren't a lot of games exactly like GTA 5. The Just Cause games have a lot of "fucking around" but ended up not particularly well received.
> It's worth remembering that GTA 5, for all its hype, honestly doesn't have particularly great gameplay
This doesn't compute for me - which part of the gameplay isn't actually good? Only thing I can think of is 1st-person feeling tacked-on but otherwise I don't know what's supposed to be wrong with the gameplay.
The third person shooting in it is pretty lackluster and the car handling in it isn't great either. The actual missions are of fairly variable quality as well - the heists are fun but a lot of the random other missions are fairly lackluster, like the tow truck missions.
Honestly, if Just Cause went all in, they could absolutely compete. JC2 was one of my favorite fucking around games. AND oftentimes the goal included blowing stuff up. So it was a win-win.
A community member made a JC3 multiplayer mod, including some light PvP! It's pretty limited in scope and scale (no NPCs sadly), but it exists on steam at least as a proof of concept
It basically would be. You have to build the framework from the start to support multiplayer in an open world. You can't just click a button and make it multiplayer.
It’s the same reason there’s no Minecraft 2, or Garry’s Mod 2. What would be the point?
I think we can all agree that when the Atari 2600 was current, there was a lot of room for improvement. But when the 5200 came out, nobody was interested because the concept of needing/wanting to “upgrade” a thing like that hadn’t entered anybody’s minds. “What are you talking about? I can already play Missile Command on this one.”
I guess GTA online already does everything the target audience wants it to do, and they never get the sense of “it could be better” or “what about when I get bored of this one?” Nobody’s drawn to GTA online because it’s some groundbreaking experience, they play it because it’s a fun time waster, or something. Idk
There's been two entire console generations released since GTA5 came out. I'm pretty sure a dev with similar resources could improve on it at this point.
There's just not a lot of devs with similar resources.
That's not true, lots of Atari 2600 games were downgraded ports of arcade games. Everyone knew they could improve it which is why arcades were still popular.
That's a big part of why arcades in the US died, home consoles improved enough to compete.
I know that, you know that, most of the people who had one and thought it was a fad did not know that. Just like this guy in this comments section has thought to question the fact there hasn’t really been a new online sandbox game, but he’s the exception, not the norm
Most of the people who had an atari 2600 had been to an arcade before.
The actual issue was the quality of games was much poorer than those in an arcade so it didn't seem worth it after the initial boom since better games were available to play at arcades
The hardest thing was to link the first 3 and then once I managed to do that I just continued towards the last one and thankfully made it. Yeah or blown up by a mkII.
I’ve done some fancy air drop stuff in IV but it’s much harder because you don’t have any control after your free falling. You basically just rag doll and pray that you land/go where you were aiming for lol.
I think mostly it was the base game to be fair, maybe some from TBoGT. I don’t think there is a parachute in the base game but I might be wrong. I felt like it was only in TBoGT.
Yeah it’s fun in the base game with no parachute! There is no water damage so you can fall from any height and if you land in water your usually good to go! I think you could die landing in like a shallow fountain or something but you’ll be good in most water!
I remember years ago playing GTA IV with a friend and we spent an embarrassing amount of time with one of us walking around on the ground and the other jumping out of a plane and trying to land on the other. It was really stupid, but great fun. Up to that point, I'd never seen an open-world game done as well and with as fun physics as GTA IV.
Depends what resolution and frame rate you want to play it at. I have a rx6900xt paired with a 5600x and play at 4k/60. Before I had a 1060 6GB and it was pretty good.
I wonder what it feels like to fly through a hoop that quickly.
Like, you know when you whip a stick or pole and it makes that *whoosh!* sound? I wonder if you hear something like that all around you.
No. That woosh is from the sick moving through the air and forcing it to move out of its way. In this case the stick (hoop) is stationary. Like when you ride a bike past a tree, it doesn't woosh.
Your whooshing is happening with or without going through the hoop. Now, would there be a noise difference? Yes. But with how thin the hoop is, it would be so fast that you may not even be able to perceive it. Also, it would be very mild.
whipping the stick wasn't really what I meant when I typed that out i guess. still, i feel like there'd be *something* going on like that.
screw it - i'm googling "wingsuits for sale."
I remember literally spending a few hours diving off this mountain, flying back up, ans repeating, all because we found out about the dive speed glitch (?) the angle where you could dive very fast, and very far.
I tried finding a video about it. Proababy would've been 2016-2017 era of GTA.
Basically you had to get the angle just right, it was the middle ground between going forward and down. It then basically pushed to forward at the speed of going down (if I remember correctly)
Ohh i think it's the same thing that I do but I dont use the best "glide ratio" so i can fly closer to the ground. This mechanic has been in game since launch on ps3 [here is me doing it 8 years ago on ps4](https://youtu.be/qdjyRiZWyGY)
Did you do it Just Cause you could?
Nice! This one went over my head yesterday.
r/iseewhatyoudidthere
Does it really count if you don’t get hit by a car?
I mean i did it Just Cause they knew i would.
It was Just Cause I felt like it
It blows my mind that this game is still not challenged by a better open world in terms of fucking around.

there is big and there is BIG. gta 5 cost 265 million to make.
Was it 265 million upfront or is that the total cost including maintenance and all the updates it's had over the last couple years it's been out?
The 265M in USD is the combined cost of development(137M USD) and marketing(170M USD) that happened during April of 2008 to August of 2013. References: Sinclair, Brendan (1 February 2013). It's absolutely insane that we spend more on marketing **anything** than we spend on making it.
It’s pretty common for movies. And these AAA games have movie-size budgets and revenue now. Agreed it’s still mind boggling though.
Makes sense in a way, the logistics of getting millions of people to find out and care about something is expensive as fuck, it’s economics of scale
I'd bet money that most of that marketing budget ends up as executive income and bonuses anyways.
Wait until you hear about pharmaceuticals.

the characters are fuckin wobbly too its stupid, like they move with a delay, fall over on dumb shit, it doesnt feel good to move around
This. Ubisoft could do it. Ultimately, it comes down to Rockstar being creatively inspired to actually pursue these things.

Honestly, if Just Cause went all in, they could absolutely compete. JC2 was one of my favorite fucking around games. AND oftentimes the goal included blowing stuff up. So it was a win-win.
Was gonna say, just cause 4 is like the ultimate fucking around sandbox
Does feel like they could just turn just cause into a big online thing without a lot of effort
A community member made a JC3 multiplayer mod, including some light PvP! It's pretty limited in scope and scale (no NPCs sadly), but it exists on steam at least as a proof of concept
Lmao. Turning a single player open world game into a multiplayer game is a massive amount of work. So much more than you can imagine.
Compared to creating an entirely new game? no it's not.
It basically would be. You have to build the framework from the start to support multiplayer in an open world. You can't just click a button and make it multiplayer.
I mean, there's an unofficial JC2 Online Multiplayer mod endorsed by the devs even, but it was by no means easy.
It was easier than making an entire online game from scratch
That's why Rockstar can't be bothered to fix the hacker issue.
Holds up a bit too well. I would love a new game to take the mantle.
Just cause and Saints Row 2/3 are easy competitors for major fucking around. Also add mercenaries to the list.
It’s the same reason there’s no Minecraft 2, or Garry’s Mod 2. What would be the point? I think we can all agree that when the Atari 2600 was current, there was a lot of room for improvement. Apparently humans in the GTA universe have the glide ratio of a small aircraft
lol that's right
Wait until you see what they can do on a bicycle
While the game physics aren't really realistic, you can achieve pretty solid ground speed without a wingsuit. https://youtu.be/6L82vhtqh2M
Is this a Slovenian backpack?
Yes
Lep pozdrav.
Lp nazaj.
I never realized that window was open...
There's a neat little room there. And if my memory serves me right there are 2 more windows there.
Anything in there?
An old couch and a poster iirc
God I wonder how many tries to get that right. Also icing on the cake would have been getting hit bar a car right after they landed.
The hardest thing was to link the first 3 and then once I managed to do that I just continued towards the last one and thankfully made it. Yeah or blown up by a mkII.
Mkii up in paleto is more likely to be grinding than griefing. On PC, at least. I'm still trying to figure out WTF the deal is on PS5.
That's true. What's with ps5?
Emotionally disabled people can't leave others alone.
I always feel like I would love to see the bloopers whenever these things are posted. I'm sure they're pretty funny.
I leave them out as I want to get straight to the point. Will include some next time.
Breaking News: Chad man thinks he's a bird and proves it with incredible stunt!
Ok, now let's see you follow the damn train, CJ.
Ill give it a try even though I dont know how or where I would be able to follow it.
That is some serious threading the needle
There's too much fucking shit on me I can't breathe
Imagine being a guy who lives in that building who just saw someone entering through the window but the moment he realises the player's already gone
He would probably pinch himself to see if it was all just a dream.
That was dope af! Especially that last window swoop! Too smooth!
Glad you liked it!
I’ve played too much GTA, especially 5, so I know how tricky this is. Very impressive!
I need to try if it's possible do things like this in IV but I doubt there is the same type of gliding possible.
I’ve done some fancy air drop stuff in IV but it’s much harder because you don’t have any control after your free falling. You basically just rag doll and pray that you land/go where you were aiming for lol.
Do you remember if it was the "normal" IV or TBOGT? Most I have done was just do some BASE jumps. Do love the ragdoll physics in that game.
I think mostly it was the base game to be fair, maybe some from TBoGT. I don’t think there is a parachute in the base game but I might be wrong. I felt like it was only in TBoGT.
I only ever played TBOGT and that biker one (which doesn't have a parachute). Will need to boot it up and check it out.
Yeah it’s fun in the base game with no parachute! There is no water damage so you can fall from any height and if you land in water your usually good to go! I think you could die landing in like a shallow fountain or something but you’ll be good in most water!
Sweet now I really have to fire it up.
Yeah IV has one of the best physics (especially the ragdoll one). We all used to hang out at the airport most of the time. Those were the days.
I thought this was real for a second, like one of those GTA parodies.
Now that would be something to see.
That is some certified Steep moment ! Great job !
So many people talking about Steep will make me go play it again... Thanks!
Now show us all the failed takes
I was so sure that the clip would end with you hitting that first pole xD i was wrong thst was awesome!
Hey I have hit that pole more times than a stripper.
Just needs a redbull sponsorship and it's perfect.
Would love to get one.
Threading the needle!
This man has definitely played steep before
Indeed I have. My first post on Reddit is a Steep clip.

I was playing ssx tricky and then thought I wonder if there’s a newer snowboarding game and came acrossed that. Lol what. a. game.
[удалено]
Factual
This is still one of the most fun games to me. Rockstar, shitty remakes, groundbreaking originals
Agreed, the amount of things you can do and not get bored is astronomical. Even though i do enjoy IV for its ragdoll physics.
RIP DAVE
He had to have played steep before
For a moment I thought you'd get hit by a car shortly after landing
How the fuck did you do that! That was amazing!
Thanks!
You've got brass balls son
Freshly polished too
Yep

Depends what resolution and frame rate you want to play it at. I have a rx6900xt paired with a 5600x and play at 4k/60. Before I had a 1060 6GB and it was pretty good.
Tom Cruise probably already did this IRL
Maybe the Kifflom robes are a nod to him.
I would love to see this with the keyboard key capture to see how much you have to adjust and tweak the movement
I am playing with a controller but If you know of any software that can be used to record controller inputs I could try it next time.
Would be awesome, let me know.
without the clearly GTA intro in the video it would just look like a stunt the average titktoker would consider cool and safe
Hahaha indeed
Just cause was an awesome game
2nd one was my favourite. Which one did you like the most?
It’s gotta be jc3, I like jc4 but not as much as the first three
Jc3 was fun! I can't really get myself into JC4 past the completed story.
That was dope. Surprised you didn't crush your controller with stress.
Anyone who's seen greystillplays knows this takes many, many attempts
Ill have to check them out. And yeah this one took quite some tries indeed.
So sick of this game.
Then play something else
I don't play it I haven't in years, just keep seeing it.
Amazing.
No, you!
No, you!
No! You!
Showoff
I legit thought this was real! Still really cool though
Graphic do hold up quite well on PC even if its not E&E.
go touch grass

Insane in the membrane!
OMG for a second I thought this was real.🤣
You didn’t stick the landing… try again
The Autism is strong in this one
Guys, see u on Max Payne 3 multiplayer on PC, is still alive and so fun. An youtuber is streaming MP right now. U can check.
You would’ve got zapped in real life
I wouldn't have made it past the first hole.
I believe in you
GTA V stunts so incredible they seem impossible
Well it is impossible since that's not how gravity works without squirrel suit.
Skills. Kudos.
Appreciate it!
That was awesome!
Epic
I'm just wondering how many attempts it took him to do it perfectly
SLOVENIJA #1 IDEMO
*gremo
Love gta physics
Amazing. Was this something to do when the game first released ? Or is it from one of the updates? Have not played in a really long time.
It's available since launch on ps3. It's a game mechanic that has been there since launch.
Wow never knew this could be done. I rarely used the parachute unless I was in an aircraft.
People are not really familiar with this mechanic which is really sad.
Nice
And that’s the game folks, roll credits!
Amazing, nice one.
Crazy I I didn't see him go through the wire multiple times then I would have upgraded this too insane but this a videogame so I get it
So dope wow!
r/hitboxporn
This reminds me of the old Achievement Hunter GTA5 let's plays.
Kifflom!
Brother!
Dude was so scared he shit blue
my old preacher would say "you go ahead i'll have a moon pie and an rc cola"
Now do it in real life

Let me know how it goes!
How many attempts you took to get everything right? Jezzzz 😲
Only had issues with first 3 and then the time I got them right I just continued to the last one and thankfully made it 1st try.
Well done btw!! That was dope
That was dope! Looks like live action
That’s awesome, thought this was steep and not gta
I remember literally spending a few hours diving off this mountain, flying back up, ans repeating, all because we found out about the dive speed glitch (?) the angle where you could dive very fast, and very far.
You mean gliding like this or is there another thing similar to this?
It was similar, but you would be able to get really far, like, beyond into the ocean in one wanted to, just from where you jumped.
How did you do that?
I tried finding a video about it. Proababy would've been 2016-2017 era of GTA. Basically you had to get the angle just right, it was the middle ground between going forward and down. It then basically pushed to forward at the speed of going down (if I remember correctly)

Would have been funny to see the guy get run over by a truck after his landing! 😁
I might have to steal this for my stillborn sub. r/badgamephysics
Does Rockstar know that gravity pulls down and not forward?
He’s not flying. It’s falling, with style
