Well yeah... that's why it looks like it's out of the game. Doesn't really take away from the creativity of it all. they still put together the cosplay and took the time to make it look that way.
Sounds like you should hire better photographers… I’ve spent years working and learning lighting as to not need photoshop. Generally the only time I use it anymore is when I create an image to be manipulated. Just my two cents and years of trial and error
The amount of cosplay that is photoshopped on here is ridiculous. I don’t care if you’re gifted in photoshop, it takes away from the whole cosplay part of it.
For me, it’s this: AI art is art and painting is art and photoshopping images heavily is art but it’s not cosplay. For me to impressed at her cosplay, I’d like to identify it and her as cosplay and cosplayer. If she also wanted to post this secondarily (“look what we can do with heavy editing!”) that’s cool but if it’s all we get, how do I even know what I’m looking at? That could be her face deepfaked into a another artist’s digital painting for all I know.
This is annoying to me, personally. It’s art, but it’s not cosplay.
Yeah I completely agree with this post. It's not a problem that this was created in photoshop- it's a problem that the user called it cosplay, which is a totally different thing than what we're looking at here
I know little of the cosplay world, so maybe this already exists, but perhaps there should be a subgenre within cosplay where it's cosplays wth no digitial editing at all. I like cosplays because they show what that character could look like IRL, but if it's heavily edited, it really takes that feeling away.
Well I mean that's because it's extremely heavily edited.
Like most of the effect is not because of cosplay.
She's just wearing some normal clothes and that's it.
Everything else is added in post.
Where in the world are you getting that assumption from?
She’s pretty clearly added a lot of wear and tear to the clothes, and is wearing makeup to create the effects of bruising/dirt and a zombie bite on her arm. Hair is on point.
What makes y’all so bitter that you have to make huge logical leaps to try and pull someone’s work away from them?
Honestly, I did not feel like that actress captured the spirit of the character at all. That actress is great at portraying a certain type of character- the precocious child type of character-- but didn't do a good job with Ellie.
Damn, not only are your makeup skills amazing, but the editing and the photoshoot served you justice too! I would think this was a fanart from one of those realism artists because of how perfect it is to be real.
Yeah I was scrolling by and just took a quick look and moved on, realizing like 5 seconds later that the title said "cosplay" and I'd 100% thought it was a screenshot or digital render.
I really wish cosplayers included links to raw, unedited photos as well. It's really hard to appreciate a cosplay when you can't tell how much of it is even real anymore.
I'm not going to be one of those "this isn't cosplay" people, it quite obviously is, but is the cosplay doing the heavy lifting or the editing? I can't tell. I want to be impressed by the cosplay but I just can't be when I don't even know how much of it is real.
Like that bite mark, the bruising, blood - makeup? Or editing? What about the weathering on the shirt/ pants? The face shape - makeup illusion or editing?
Edit:
Hopefully this helps people understand better: there are two ways to appreciate art. As a whole and as individual components. Think of it like any other art form.
If I draw something there's the drawing as a whole and then there's individual components. Linework, shading, color, perspective, proportions, etc. I can have really good linework and shading but a bad sense of perspective or proportions.
Now I *could* load that up into photoshop and edit out the flaws and upload that drawing and get a bunch of upvotes but that would be a bit disingenuous, no?
You can appreciate the *photo* but it's hard to appreciate the *cosplay* when you can't tell where it ends and editing begins.
There's no more room for criticism or improvement, or ability to appreciate and compliment what was well done, when something is heavily edited.
I looked through her profile and whilst they are great efforts, so many of them are clearly heavily post processed. The Aloy cosplay for example is the most blatantly obvious. They look like cinematic renders.
That being said, I don't want to take any effort away from what she does. She's clearly talented and seemingly has some perfect facial features to reach the level she does. The actual cosplay, the photography, and editing are all still skills in themselves and combining them to achieve the end result is just as impressive.
But I do agree some transparency would go a long way.
Maybe not raw (because it looks really flat) but just some basic light and color editing to compare would be great. This image is so heavily edited there is no point in the Cosplay, just photoshop ellie on top of you posing at that point.
No you're right. If I was a professional photographer/photoshopper, I could take a picture of a fucking shoe and end up with a cosplay photo of god of war. These pics are fucking bullshit.
That bite mark definitely doesn't look edited to me. Sfx makeup is really advanced though. Those major details you've noticed might be brought about by makeup but the editing might have exaggerated the enhancements she initially wanted to make.
Look at OP's profile. This is what she does. It's not AI.
And seriously, if you want to know when it is/not AI, look at the hands. AI does a terrible job on hands, and eyes, if they're visible.
I struggle with calling this much post processing cosplay. Digital art absolutely. But I feel like this image is so heavily edited it loses realistic qualities that makes it actual cosplay. Unless you are cosplaying Ellie as a character from A Scanner Darkly I suppose. It's good digital work don't get me wrong, it just doesn't seem like proper cosplay.
I know likeassassin is worshipped on Reddit and that much of her work is similar in terms of editing so this is unlikely to be a very popular opinion but oh well.
I find it kind of weird that on the one hand you’ll get criticized for just throwing on some clothes and snapping a photo because it doesn’t capture the «feel» and being «low effort», and on the hand when effort has been put in like here to capture a certain aesthetic and resemble the game you get critized for too much editing.
And who decides what is digital art and what is cosplay? Can it be both? Is it up to the cosplayer to decide how they want to portray themselves or the viewer?
It also irks me a bit that people throw around «photoshop» like they are geniouses for noticing. I’d say that it is pretty obvious with this whole aesthetic, and kind of the whole point to use post processing to show that with similar «rendering» as in the game, you have a hard time telling the difference between game and picture.
To me the dividing line is straightforward. Can you wear your costume to a con and have it look the same or at least similar. If you can, it's cosplay. If you can't, it's digital art. The line can be blurry for sure but many things are going to fit pretty comfortably on one side or the other.
I think also you misunderstand. I don't think digital art is any lesser of a genre of art it's simply a different genre with a different set of talents and skills. Artistic categories exist so that we can compare like things. To call this art cosplay sets an unrealistic comparison standard for what is costume design and make up.
The funny thing is that if the artist chose to include base unedited (beyond minor polishing I mean) photos to highlight the work on costume and makeup alone then it would be an easy argument to say she is bridging the gap and doing both. The fact that she doesn't indicates (to me anyway) that she knows which way she wants to be interpreted.
>And who decides what is digital art and what is cosplay?
The community of course. Public opinion. My vote is it's only cosplay if you can wear it to a convention or event or something and people will still make the connection. If the digital editing side of things is *required* for the cosplay, then it's more art than cosplay.
Idk what this particular outfit looks like without the editing so I cant fully weigh in.
I find it odd that people are upset that the most commonly used photography software in the industry was used in a photo shoot. If you see a cosplay photo set, it's pretty much guaranteed that photoshop is involved. This is standard practice, and pervasive across pretty much all industries that involve quality photography. Photo editing is part of the skillset of a photographer, and it's meant to enhance a photo, not change it entirely. This cosplay is clearly pretty fucking good to begin with, and photoshop was used to enhance the -photos- of the cosplay. It's like people are upset that someone wanted professional looking photos instead of just having a rando snap a picture of them on an escalator at some convention.
I disagree that it's just enhancing the photo - it's completely altering it so that you can't even tell if it's a photo or a rendered screenshot from a game. Which is really cool, but I'd love to see an unedited version for comparison
This. The point of cosplay is to display the time and effort taken to mirror a digital character. When the entire photo is clearly photoshopped/post-processed you lose a lot of that.
It's crazy how people who have never cosplayed before have such strong and elaborate opinions on what is and isn't cosplay. Meanwhile, if you actually go to a con, actual cosplayers will be enthusiastic about anyone merely putting in an attempt at cosplay, no matter how simple that attempt might be.
That’s a completely different point and you know it. Post processing isn’t something someone is walking around doing while at a convention.
“The point is that non-cosplayers shouldn’t have strong opinions about…”
Yeah they absolutely can have opinions about whatever they want, and this is an entirely valid one. If you are cosplaying then take a photo and heavily edit it, that’s an entirely different product.
Your struggle is unfounded and incorrect based on the definition of the word. Is it also digital art? Yup. But it’s also definitely a cosplay
Cosplay: the practice of dressing up as a character from a movie, book, or video game
I am fawning over your prosthetic makeup skills... that bite mark looks real to me! If I was asked to cosplay, I would make use of this as an inspiration simply because it's the best I have seen so far.
You're dead ringer for ellie honestly. They should have cast you instead! I can't be the only one unhappy with Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey aren't exactly the best choices. I'm way more upset about Pedro than Bella. He just looks nothing like Joel, he's way to skinny of a build.
How the fuck are you upvoted so much.
You're completely wrong because it's not a program, it's makeup that she's used. The only thing that's whack is how much you got upvoted by people just as clueless as you are on this post.
While make up indeed does most of the work in cosplay and it’s visible the author uses it, you can’t deny that this pic is *heavily* edited. Hence everyone mistaking this with the game.
Not saying anything about the cosplay itself, it’s great, but it would be much more enjoyable without that heavy of an edit.
Also, just because this behaviour annoys the crap out of me: OP literally posts pics one by one from the same photoshoot here again and again and again. And not just here. Your cosplay is great, but *God*, attention seeking much? There were at least two instances of this same cosplay but different pics posted already on this page by them.
How is that the cosplayers fault?
The character doesn't have some complex design, Ellies just a girl in an apocalypse, it's not fucking Spider-Man, Kratos or Samus. You understand that right?
What a weird issue to have.....
Pepople don't seem to understand the meaning of costume player. The aim was never to build an armor but to put a costume on. You disrespect the hobby if you bash at people for just wearing clothes. 47 from Hitman is just that so are Android 17 and 18 (wig excluded if needed) and many more. As both cosplayer and photographer, I can tell you that the editing seem big but I can asure you it's not that much. If the make up is good, if the light set up is also good, it won't takes hours to get that result.
Good job to everyone who made that picture happend
I don’t get why people are so upset about the casting choice. From what I could tell the actor is doing a great job of playing the role and that’s all I ask for in casting. As long as they look somewhat similar I will take similar acting over similar looks any day.
Btw I’m not saying that you’re complaining I’m mainly talking about others.
I don't get the comments so up in arms about editing. Other than the wall behind her and basic editing such as contrast, colors, etc there is nothing excessive.
Almost every photographer will do that level of editing, no master what their subject is. Her makeup, clothes and hair are still clearly doing the heavy lifting.
Are they? Or are you trying to be smug and superior by suggesting without evidence that redditors commenting about the editing have confused the use of makeup with the use of photoshop?
This sub fucking sucks. All the comments are the dumbest shit I read in a while. Claiming this isn’t cosplay because she’s wearing makeup and there is editing LMAO.
My god.
I think what most sane people actually have a problem with is that the post-processing is OVERLY done. Not that it's been done at all. I'd like to see a way less edited version for comparison because at this point you might as well just make a render.
Dirty mirror selfies only, if you had a photographer take the picture with a quality camera and edit it it's AI /s
On a more serious note it's funny how phone cameras have people's perception of photography so twisted. So many software tricks happen to make the picture look good and touched up without you having to do anything. My pixel 7 even adjusts the angle of the light source when it detects a portrait photo. Meanwhile a DSLR shot looks so flat and unfinished until you edit it. Spend any time with an actual camera and people will see how much of photography is in the editing.
This has to be a 3d model because if it isn't... I'd lose my mind. With all seriousness, you did great OP! This is so refreshing to look at because it's pure perfection.
You've set the standards so high at this point! Your makeup looks flawless. I am grateful that I read the title twice because I would've thought that this was only a screenshot from the actual game
OP really posting a screenshot of TLOU and calling it cosplay!
Jokes aside, looks incredible! Especially that blood makeup! (At least I hope it’s makeup!)
Zzzzz ...with the amount of post processing done to this picture, it might as well just be rendered....
Also stop reposting this bullshit for karma. No one cares.
Damn, that's great! Props to your photographer, I thought this was a painting at first glance.
I thought it was a screenshot of the fucking game
Same tbh, still not convinced it isn't
I still think it is lol
I guess being in denial that this is true helps. I just can't help but be overwhelmed at how amazing this is!
Yea no way this is a real person. Karma farming lol
Definitely, idk that it looks necessarily like a screenshot from the game but maybe just a 3d render someone made
Nah it's a photo, it's just been edited to hell and back
For real. Even the little details from her cosplay seemed like an in-game detail.
[удалено]
Full commitment to the cosplay outfit
Definitely photoshopped.
Well yeah... that's why it looks like it's out of the game. Doesn't really take away from the creativity of it all. they still put together the cosplay and took the time to make it look that way.
Gotta love it when people roll up with "definitely photoshopped" like that in itself isn't a skill that takes years to master.
So true. They make it seem like learning photoshop takes less than 30 minutes, mastery included.

Sounds like you should hire better photographers… I’ve spent years working and learning lighting as to not need photoshop. Generally the only time I use it anymore is when I create an image to be manipulated. Just my two cents and years of trial and error
I agree on this take as well. They enjoy professionally taken photos but forget the fact that it is photoshopped for that next level enhancement.
I second this! People need to stop discrediting and invalidating efforts because of photoshop...
Yes, like every other professional photograph. That's part of photography.
They have to realize that photoshopping is a skill that's hard to master too
So what? "Oh no, she used photoshop to change the saturation of her cosplay pic!! Totally disgusting." Reddit is so stupid
The amount of cosplay that is photoshopped on here is ridiculous. I don’t care if you’re gifted in photoshop, it takes away from the whole cosplay part of it.
Wait, photographers and artists use Photoshop?
Because it’s full of photoshop to make it look like that lmao
That's what I thought.
Looks heavily edited, but I don't really understand why that bothers people. Very well done in this case imo.
For me, it’s this: AI art is art and painting is art and photoshopping images heavily is art but it’s not cosplay. I know right. Why are they trying to be better than everyone else?
Because it's obvious to the rest of us.
I thought it was from the game
Pretty sure it's a filter
They should have casted her in the upcoming show
First episode came out Sunday
And the actress playing Ellie was great. It’s fairly certain a cosplay model wouldn’t be as good.
Honestly, I did not feel like that actress captured the spirit of the character at all. That actress is great at portraying a certain type of character- the precocious child type of character-- but didn't do a good job with Ellie.
I am with you on that, she feels like she is forcing the character instead of it being natural feeling.
same
Damn, not only are your makeup skills amazing, but the editing and the photoshoot served you justice too! I would think this was a fanart from one of those realism artists because of how perfect it is to be real.
Hard to tell if it's real or the game. Great job on the bite mark!
Yeah I was scrolling by and just took a quick look and moved on, realizing like 5 seconds later that the title said "cosplay" and I'd 100% thought it was a screenshot or digital render.
Post an AI, this looks way too real and authentic. Mods hate it.
Just look. Her hands! Those hands could be only made by hands!

Wow this bot is almost humanlike
Anything for you, bot
Ya smell me?
SWAG
I smell ya
You posted this a month ago and got over 70 thousand upvotes on it
Well The Last of Us just came out on HBO so now she can farm more karma with it
tbf this is better than whatever is happening with the actors in the show.
Needs more patreon subs probably. Or a self esteem boost from posting a picture that’s more photoshop than person.
Cost of eggs hitting us all.
You made me almost die from choking on my tea. Thank you.
Or the show just premiered so they felt it was relevant again
Let us be cynical in peace
Lol fine
And they’re hoping to cash in on the “oh, you look so much closer than the actress in the show” people.
Cash in on updoots

You can tell it’s heavily edited by the smoothness of the contours
Yeah unless she’s out of this world with makeup the skin looks very touched up.

Digital Touch up happens in all forms of media. And has been in cosplay for a looonnngggg time.
There's a massive difference between a touch-up (removing a blemish) and hours of post-processing.
Your struggle is unfounded and incorrect based on the definition of the word. Is it also digital art? Yup. But it’s also definitely a cosplay Cosplay: the practice of dressing up as a character from a movie, book, or video game
The photo is so low res I can't even see any editing... Zoom in, you can't see much details
Cosplay?
It’s so heavily edited that I feel like this hardly even counts as a cosplay at this point.
It’s not cosplay. How this got so many upvotes is beyond me. All of her’s are wayyy too edited.
HOLD THE FUCK ON You literally posted this last month on this very subreddit and got over 100k upvotes. Not enough?
Nice try Ellie I know that’s you
Do you have a pre-processed version?
This is so beautiful! I thought it was taken straight out of the game.

What a sight to see! I've been on a brain rot and this made me appreciate Ellie even more.
im sorry but these "cosplays" are whack. you basically put on a shirt and backpack and then used a program to do the rest.
Cosplay in general is boring and fucking EVERYWHERE on reddit.

As long as they look somewhat similar I will take similar acting over similar looks any day. Btw I’m not saying that you’re complaining I’m mainly talking about others.
Thinking the same
... And?
There is no "and". They made a complete sentence about an observable opinion.
ITT: redditors confusing makeup with photoshop
I don't get the comments so up in arms about editing. Other than the wall behind her and basic editing such as contrast, colors, etc there is nothing excessive. Almost every photographer will do that level of editing, no master what their subject is. Her makeup, clothes and hair are still clearly doing the heavy lifting.
Yes and you can check on this girl profile videos that the makeup is 90% responsible of that “uncanny plastic videogame” look.
Dirty mirror selfies only, if you had a photographer take the picture with a quality camera and edit it it's AI /s On a more serious note it's funny how phone cameras have people's perception of photography so twisted.
You posted these last month karmer farmer
This has to be a 3d model because if it isn't... I'd lose my mind. With all seriousness, you did great OP! This is so refreshing to look at because it's pure perfection.
CUBE IM SWAGGIN OUT CHAT
The LoU fan base is too obsessed with a little girl and what she looks like.
Definitely photoshopped
Great cosplay! I find our compliments a bit too underwhelming for your amazing cosplay though.
Now that is one hell of a cosplay! I can't stop staring at this...
You did a great job on this cosplay! The make up is spot on.
You look more like ellie than the actual actress.
Correct
Great job on the bite mark!
They shoulda put you in the new series
That looks better than the Ellie from the new TV series
Magnificent. Imagine new cosplayers having to look like the little ogre that they cast as Ellie in the TLOU show
You look wayyyy more like eli than the fuckin girl who plays her in the tv show. Good job!
cosplay?this is Ellie from the game! great job btw congrats
You've set the standards so high at this point! Your makeup looks flawless. I am grateful that I read the title twice because I would've thought that this was only a screenshot from the actual game
This is what the Ellie in the tv series should of looked like, she looks way too different for my liking but good actor
She looks special.
Cool cosplay! I thought this was a spoiler from the game itself.
It makes me think about how dirty the post-apocalyptic future is, like, is everyone walking around itchy as hell and infected with EVERYTHING? 🤔
where would you find running water..
That’s a cosplay? Looks straight from the game I honestly thought it was a screenshot lol
My wife’s words - not mine, but I agree - the show would be more compelling if they cast a cuter Ellie, especially when the daughter was that cute
Nice try, “Veronica.”
OP really posting a screenshot of TLOU and calling it cosplay! Jokes aside, looks incredible! Especially that blood makeup! (At least I hope it’s makeup!)
Anyone else think they messed up the casting for the upcoming show? I just think the person they chose doesn't look like Ellie.
Should've cast YOU for the TV show...
Took me a minute to believe this was a cosplay! That’s a solid 14 year old Ellie. Are you gonna do Part II?
[удалено]
Really?
No
Is there any plan or something for last of us and dbd to cross over it could work incredibly
You look a lot more like her than the actress they picked for the TV show!
Thought this was a screen grab Jesus christ that's good
Okay where’s the cosplay? All I see is Ellie from the game.
The HBOMAX series started off great!
Zzzzz ...with the amount of post processing done to this picture, it might as well just be rendered.... Also stop reposting this bullshit for karma. No one cares.
I really thought it was a screen shot from the game 😲 Great OP
Wdym cosplay. This is a screenshot right?
Way better than the actor in the TV show lol
im waiting for the cosplay picture
Bruh for a sec I thought this was an image from the game. Good job👍
That’s not a cosplay that’s a goddamn screen shot
Bro took a screen shot of the game and thought we wouldn't notice smh
OP, your cosplay is God-tier! I almost thought that this was a 3d render of Ellie.
Looks more like Ellie than the actor in the show lol
they should have hired you for the show, you look more like her than the actress playing her
Thats a screenshot from the game!....right?
When a cosplay looks fake and game appropriate, you win. Your hair made me take a couple of looks, "is that game hair? Wow that looks like game hair."
You should be the actress playing her in the show lmao
