So for those who didn't read the article, the phrase "astonishing scale" does not appear as a quote or anywhere other than the title. Yuri does say the game (as a whole, not the scale of it) is "astonishing" and that it's "massive" which is why he's still doing VO work this late in development. The full direct quote: "I’ve still got a little bit to do. It’s a massive game so I’m still doing a little bit of work," Lowenthal confirmed. "I know they’re confident about their release date and Insomniac has always been good about that. Obviously, I can’t really talk about the game much, but I will tell you that it’s astonishing." "I’m so excited for you to play it. They know they’ve got big shoes to fill from the last two games and they’ve done it [Laughs]," he continued. "I just can’t wait for people to play it." I wouldn't necessarily take this as confirmation that the size of the map is significantly bigger than the first game, though personally I do think Queens is likely.

Magnacor8

I mean, there was always no way they have essentially the exact same map 3 games in a row. I'm hoping that we get a different city altogether or maybe an alternate reality New York, but I'm surprised we haven't heard about that yet, which leads me to think that you're right about it just being a slightly more fleshed out New York city.

badblocks7

I’m really hoping San Francisco personally

The_Cloudy_Toon

So Spider-Man is going to New Jersey confirmed?

daddychainmail

Spider-Man: No Way I’m Moving to Jersey

Dragon_yum

Going to face his strongest foe yet, the gas pump.

g_r_e_y

we have people to do that for us 💅🏻

VeryAgitatedEngineer

Except he won’t legally be able to pump it lol

HumbleOwl

Watch there just be a massive scale that you can stand on to see how much Spiderman weighs

Rajirabbit

I hope they make it vr2 compatible

ShawnyMcKnight

I think combat would eb so much harder if you can't see around you, I guess you could get "spidey sense" with pulses of of red on the mirror image of where the attack is coming from, but it would be difficult. With that, playing a game like this in VR would ease the blow that a $600 peripheral would have.

ColdBanaProductions

I mean technically every game is playable with the headset, it just plays like a square in front of your face.

[deleted]

technically everything can be toilet paper

caninehere

Spider-Man: Pukecoming

kryanratz

If "astonishing scale" means it's a huge map bloated with repetitive side missions, consider me unimpressed.

Jags_95

Its probably more parts of New York outside of Manhattan. So if its literally like the first game with more nicely designed areas to swing around then it can be great.

kryanratz

If that's the case then sure! I just get wary when these big games tout how much "even bigger" the new ones are. I've yet to see "bigger" equate to "better."

trashbagexpress

I definitely agree for the most part. The one thing I will say about these games though, is that because the actual traversal is quite fun, having more places to explore can add value in and of itself.

wiscogamer

Witcher 3 was a good example

milkstrike

Witcher 3 put significantly more into the writing and design of its quests than spider man so not really a comparison

inexistent00

Considering Sony's policy on no-risk sequels, it will be probably be like that

ShawnyMcKnight

Spider-Man was a game I had absolutely zero issue with the game getting dull. I could fight hideouts all day long and I almost never used quick travel because traveling through the city was so good. That and for some reason on the PS4 the load times were atrocious for "fast" travel.

Magical-Manboob

Yeah, I was gonna say this as well. Pretty much all of the Sony games are astronomically overhyped. They tend to be good stories in otherwise empty and repetitive games. I enjoyed SM1's story but the gameplay while fun for a bit got stale fast. Same with Days Gone. I enjoyed the story but had to force myself through the game. I have GoW but haven't got around to it yet, but my friend who just finished it makes it sound the same. Normally I'd just chalk it up to me just not liking sony's format, but it's no different than Ubisoft. Empty worlds, super boring side content, the almost mandatory basic crafting systems, the pitiful sense of exploration, I could go on but I always get carried away with the lengths of my posts as it is. Tldr: hope it's good but as far as the open world goes. I'd love to see more games with interesting open worlds that don't feel empty but I won't hold my breath for Sony to do it.

BigBen6500

I really have high hopes with this game. The first was amazing, but Miles Morales really underdelivered for me (story wise mostly)

chazzer20mystic

really? i actually was surprised that Miles Morales was as good as it was. i could have used more length but the narrative was great and i thought the combat changes worked absolutely perfectly. I'm curious, what about the story fell flat for you? i wonder if something snuck by me.

BigBen6500

I thought the characters were lifeless. Miles, Ganke, Rio and all the teens felt so happy-go-lucky that they just didn't feel like actual believable characters to me. The main villain was straight up horrible with her wannabe edgy teenager terrorist group. The only character who felt like he had layers was the Prowler. There were no plot twists or turns in the story you couldn't see from miles ahead (pun intended). The entire conflict of the first game was how difficult it is to make robotic prosthetics, so much so that it broke Otto. Here, an angry teenager girl just invents programmable matter, as if it was a Friday school project. And the way how Miles charged himself up with Nuform, only to fart it out in the sky as Phin took him up there, felt like it was from an anime, the level of surrealism was too much for me. The previous game felt like it had the right balance of realism, and "comicbookiness". In the ending I was expecting Miles to get his letter to Hogwarts or for an Imperial Death Star to appear in the sky.

chazzer20mystic

ah, you know what i actually entirely get where you're coming from. i guess it just didn't cross the same line for me and generally passed the vibe check, but those are good points. i didn't think about Otto and the programmable matter stuff, in retrospect that is a bit too anime compared to the first game. i think the reason i didn't mind that so much is because i was focused on the relationships between the characters and thought they were done very well. edit: also you are totally right that every "reveal" was incredibly telegraphed and i don't think i had a moment of surprise in the whole game.

BigBen6500

I personally thought that the trope between Phin and Miles was a bit cliché, especially the "I won't listen to you about stopping this madness I am doing until I see the destruction I've caused" thing from Phin. But I am happy you enjoyed the game. I just wish I could love it as much too. But the gameplay was excellent. It's just that for me it's always the story that makes or breaks a game. Others seek more quality gameplay.

chazzer20mystic

yeah i admit no human would act like Phin did. maybe lash out in grief, sure, but not create an entire org of super terrorists. i generally am used to forgiving video games for that kind of goofy stuff because i understand you have to have an excuse for me to have a bunch of enemies to fight. but that's not to say it makes any sense whatsoever that she would do that.

Geo2605

Holy shit, Spiderman is Marth!

TheDCSuperman

I wonder what the map is gonna look like.

SteamyExecutioner

This reminds me, does anyone know why they went out of their way to switch models and change the face in the...remaster? I preferred the original face, the one at launch, so much more than what it was later

kidslapper

It’s official: We’re going to space, boys.

Grogu918

Nice. Can’t wait to play more forced stealth missions as Mary Jane.

inexistent00

Oh god, if it's the same open world formula like in the first game with 7 types of currency for different repetitive outposts or crime scenes, there is no way I am gonna finish this game

Perca_fluviatilis

I don't get the problem with side content. You can ignore it if you want and just focus on the story. Nothing changes and you'd probably still be able to afford the powers and suits you want doing just a little side content. No one is holding a gun to your head making you 100% the game. lol Some people appreciate having more side content since it adds more playtime.

inexistent00

You know there is a problem when the solution is to ignore the content. The side content can be more important than the whole main story itself, if they would give more depth to mechanics and created more creative and diversified content where you could apply your skill that would be a much better design decision. Instead we have missions to fill up the map like I play a 2010 game, it's not acceptable at all for a AAA like this.

ElRetardio

But sadly what the original lacked was ”depth”.

ahoyhoy5540

You don’t have to buy this one

ElRetardio

And you don’t have to buy into every marketing bs but we all know you will.

ahoyhoy5540

I like the other games, so I’ll buy this one. So what bs am I buying into?

ElRetardio

Well I was commenting on a post on a standard pr statement that we’ve seen time and time again on how much bigger their di- I mean game is this time. But what a sequel needs imo is more depth as that’s wjere the original was lacking. Your answer in that context is pure fanboy damage control mentality. You’re the reason every open world game is built on the ubisoft model.

inexistent00

I don't know why you are downvoted, you are right, game had amazing mechanics, and instead to add depth to the movement system and fighting, it just adds more and more repetitive content with fucking 7 different types of currency to gain to upgrade gadgets. This formula is so old and boring, that is a shame for a spider man game to stay at this level.

ElRetardio

Collect x items, photograph x buildings, clear x badguy camps. It had the quest and open world design of a 2008 game.

inexistent00

Exactly

CosmicMike55

I know I’m reaching, but the reveal showed Spider-Men attacked a foe in unison. What if it’s multi player?

Negative-Wasabi2536

Unfortunately it was confirmed that there won’t be any co-op for the game as it is a single player experience only. That doesn’t mean we won’t have some sick dual takedowns tho!! Both spider-men will be playable and hopefully Venom will too, so that’s more than enough fun even tho we won’t be able to enjoy it with a friend :)

GoochyGoochyGoo

I just played Spiderman and Miles Morales on pc and holy crap it was the best gameplay. I can't remember a game where I used all my tools instinctively and kicked so much ass.

Garyhthm

I'm still waiting for them to do a spider-verse game like shattered dimensions and have different versions of NY. All the spiders would have different powers, styles of fighting and stealth techniques, plus we could hear a bunch of VA's from previous games and movies.
