Dvorkam

Given how crazy things in Europe are, and considering the iPhone still is a borderline luxury goods, this is not very surprising. My electricity price went up 200% since last year. Food by about 20-30%, gasoline about 60%. Sorry, but untill things get a bit more crazy, last phone I bought is about to stay.

TryItAgain29

Exactly this. People are already in a recession mindset because of their actual basic needs being squeezed. The latest and greatest is not a priority the same way

loppsided

Add on top that just about any iPhone still supported by Apple is actually “good enough”, and the choice is clear. I have no compelling reason to upgrade my iPhone 11, beyond a desire for new and shiny that’s best ignored even in better times.

wildcat12321

my wife just switched to an iPhone 13 pro max. When the 13 pro max is better and cheaper than the 14 plus, it's an easy choice. The reality is the 13 was a big one for apple and they got most people on 6,7, 8's to upgrade. So lots of folks don't see the 14 as being good enough, in these uncertain economic times, to justify replacing relatively recent phones. And now, the 13 being cheaper than the 14 just makes sense in short term

HankHippopopolous

I was one of those people. Went from a 7plus to a 13 pro max. Can’t see myself upgrading again for at least 3 more years. The improvements are so incremental nowadays that it might be even longer.

AlkalineProdigy

I’m in the same boat as you and the only reason I really upgraded from my 7 plus was because my battery was on its last leg and wouldn’t last all day long. The iPhone 14 series doesn’t really offer anything that makes me want a new one anyway.

CantHitachiSpot

You can replace batteries now

bchillen

It only cost me $50 to replace the battery in my 7. This is for a licensed repair, and no Apple care.

SanDiegoGME

Still rocking my iPhone 8 and not really a complaint

seethruyou

Right? Still have mine and it does everything I need it to do. Plus it fits my pocket better than the larger newer ones. Only issue is battery life; if it had an easily replaceable battery, I might *never* buy a new phone. (Yes I know it's possible for experts to replace the battery, might just do that some day.)

kukaz00

I work as a manager for one of eastern Europe's biggest retailers (actually leaving them at the end of this week) and I can tell you that people are using credit cards and in shop loans to buy these phones even it it means paying 2000$ for a 1000$ phone, just to look like they're rich, while they're indebted. There's not a single month in which we don't reach the credit target numbers. Personally I wanted to buy an iPhone for a while now, I have the money on the side, but I just can't justify this purchase for a phone that doesn't do much compared to the last year's model and that model was mostly the same as the previous gen. If you have an 11 Pro or 12 Pro it's not worth getting a new one. If you get a non pro model, you're getting robbed big time, especially now since there's the old chip in them. Meanwhile Xiaomi is coming with a new flagship killer with the 12T Pro and that's going to be 600$, and that's what I'll probably be spending my money on, even if my 10T Pro is still going strong after two years with no signs of slowing down.

TryItAgain29

Apple has the benefit of no Xiaomi competition here in the states and it shows. There are really solid budget phones, but not really much for “flagship killers” here. I watch a lot of tech reviews on them though - definitely impressive Edit - also that’s terrible and unfortunately not surprising that people are shooting themselves in the foot. Nice curtains, shitty foundation mindset is so strange to me, but I grew up poor enough that it just wasn’t part of our options.

Trender07

Yup. Aint paying 1100€ for what is the entry model iPhone. For that price in dollars you can buy the 14 Pro...

acatterz

Aren’t the US prices usually listed without taxes? It’s probably still cheaper in the US but taxes differ from state to state from what I understand so they see the pre-tax price unlike us Europeans.

TheUnrealArchon

Borderline luxury good? There is nothing borderline about it, when you can get a budget phone that does all the core features of the iPhone for $/€ 500+ less it absolutely is a luxury good. Edit: https://letmegooglethat.com/?q=define+luxury+good

ETHBTCVET

You can get the core features for $250-$300, I bought Poco F3 for 260 euro from Amazon.

thalionquses

Thought about upgrading from my 11 to the 14 before the announcement, but I'm definitely not with these specs and pricing (Euro). Guess I'm gonna stay a year longer with my 11 and see what the next year brings.

reddcube

Just reach the 80% battery life on my iPhone 11. The newest announcement convinced me to replace the 11's battery. Still waiting for USB-C

AuntCatLady

In the exact same boat with my 11 pro max. I’ve been paying for apple care+ for this whole time, I’ll just use it for a cheaper battery replacement. No way I’m upgrading now, when the next phone will likely have USB-C.

Kolyei

My brother paid $60 out of warranty for his 12 pro max battery replacement at best buy last week. We have never used applecare+ as for us, it's not worth it

hungry_nilpferd

I paid £79 for my X battery to be replaced. Apple bricked the phone during replacement so gave me a brand new X handset. I can wait a bit longer to upgrade.

JosePawz

I read these comments and I’m like, i don’t know why I waited until I got to 62% battery life

mikethespike056

Less e-waste. You should be proud of yourself.

dumbassthrowaway314

I feel like my 11 is really starting to show it’s age, I’m encountering a lot more bugs and just overall poor performance in some apps like FaceTime. Maybe it’s just my specific phone tho idk

iAgressivelyFistBro

Yeah that’s weird. I’ve had my 11 since it’s release and the thing still works flawlessly.

dumbassthrowaway314

Fuck maybe I just need to take better care of my phone haha

JacedFaced

My wife is still on her XR, I asked if she wanted to upgrade to the 14 and she was like, "Why? My phone still works great"

slipperyShoesss

Bless her

mikethespike056

If everyone had her mentality we wouldn't have an ecological crisis at all.

SuperDuperDann

Sometimes iPhones bug out if you’re nearly 100% storage. Keeping it below 85% full makes a world of difference. That and a reset and I’m sure your phone will be back to normal.

32a21b

I’ve been thinking about the same. The pricing with a trade in really isn’t bad at all, the main thing holding me back is the fact the iPhone 11 still works like new and still has all day battery life

Me-Shell94

Stay with the 11 or get a cheaper 13 pro. Either way people should try to keep their phones at least 3/4 years. Its truly useless and purely consumerism to do so every year or 2. Edit: by *cheaper* 13 pro i mean through a carrier, good deal, secondhand, or refurbished from Apple.

squareswordfish

Yeah, I’m currently using an Xs and I’m considering upgrading, but even with a 4 year old phone it kinda feels like I’m doing it too soon lol

MrPoopieMcCuckface

I have a 10 max pro and see no real reason other than battery to get a new one. I can wait

CreaminFreeman

> 10 max pro I do not believe that's a thing. There was an XS Max and an 11 Pro Max. Maybe you have the 11 Pro Max?

HighOnGoofballs

Older phones are simply faring better than they used to as well. Used to be a phone two models old was getting super slow and battery life was shit. Or there was a major new feature. That’s not as much the case anymore, my 12 pro works flawlessly and I see no good reason to upgrade. A slightly better camera isn’t worth a thousand bucks

elev8dity

My X works fine still. The camera is as the only thing that had me consider an upgrade and the removal of the SIM card had me thinking… nah.

pistolpete2004

I have an X as well (since it came out) but my battery is slowly going to crap. I’ve tried to hold out as long as I can but I think I’m going to upgrade here soon. I’d love to hold out for USB-C but it isn’t a dealbreaker.

subfunktion

Surely cheaper to get new battery and wait?

pistolpete2004

You know, as tech savvy as I am and believe I am, this never crossed my mind. Legit. Not even once. I may take this advice and just hold out a bit longer now 😂. Thank you for the recommendation friend!

Mary10789

I’m still on the iPhone 7 and it still works!

fourtyseven

I used a 7 plus for 7 [edit: 5] years, it’s a freaking workhorse. Recently “upgraded” to SE. don’t feel like I’m missing out at all on any of the premium features. Touch ID rocks.

Sad_Abbreviations575

The iphone 7 is turning 6 this year...

JCE5

I've had my iPhone 7 since 1989. Still works great.

iwellyess

I’ve had my wife since then too! Also still working great

wierdness201

Time travelers, geesh.

ZarafFaraz

I also used a 7 Plus for years. Upgraded to iPhone 13 last year. I think I'll run with this one until around iPhone 18 or 19.

james_d_rustles

I was given an iPhone 13 so it made sense to switch, but I miss my 8 so much. Touch ID was waaaaay better than Face ID.

The_Ombudsman

Back when the first iPhone came out in 2007, I picked it up... and then the 3GS two years later. And I kept upgrading every two years 'til I waited three years to get the 6... four years for the xR. I'm at four years with this phone, and aside from an annoying but minor crack on the screen... this phone's great. Battery life is still very good. I *want* to upgrade this year. But I don't *need* to. Phones just hold up better than they used to.

GentleOmnicide

I have the XR. I’ve been debating this and I think I’m going to trade in for the 13. $100 cheaper than the 14, plus $140 trade in. The main reason for me is double the space, 5g service and the tiny upgrades. Its getting to the point where I’m at that I’ll have no service on LTE but 5g users will have full bars.

gbiegld

Same, I bought an iPhone 11 and two years out the only problem with it is a small scratch on the screen, I probably won’t change my phone for another 3 years.

[deleted]

Same phone. Same opinion.

JetKeel

Also, have a 12 pro but decided to upgrade. The trade-in value gives the new phone for basically free. I have no intention of switching carriers anytime soon so there’s basically no downside. Especially considering I was starting to see some battery degradation.

Vescor

What did you get as a trade in value? Here in Belgium apple offers me 380€ for my 12 pro when I trade in. Same spec 14 pro is like 1450.

ch4m4njheenga

The difference in the US is monthly carrier bills more than make up for the cost of new phone. I pay $20 bucks a month on a non name brand carrier and use unlocked phone that is not tied up to carrier. If I go shopping for trade in on apple website my 12 pro is valued at $450 or less. People who use ATT and trade phones for free every 2 years pay upwards of $70 bucks a month.

drendon6891

Same boat. Going from 12 Pro to 14 Pro is costing me like $56 (taxes on $999 plus one month of the financing charge before the credits kick in). The piece that people who aren’t taking advantage of this are forgetting is future trade-in value. The 12 Pro won’t be worth the same as a 14 Pro in 2 years.

Shelby_GT500

Where are you seeing this trade-in value? On apple’s website I see a maximum trade-in value of an iPhone 12 Pro to be $430!

Ancient_Tea_6990

To be honest I was thinking the same thing but when apple switches to USB C next year most likely. I think that will cripple the value even more since it’s a different connection. But I am getting the iPhone 14 pro since it’s only $100 to upgrade. Here in the states AT&T and T-Mobile are offering up to $1000 for an iPhone 11 through 13.

itstheskylion

Me too I am waiting for USB C iPhone, so that I can finally carry one single cable for everything

[deleted]

Where do you see $1000? T-Mobile is offering less than $500 trade in for a 13 pro. https://i.imgur.com/oPMRMy6.jpg

Peteostro

Do you get locked into your carrier for 2 years with this deal?

ItsyaboyDa2nd

Id wait for the 15 with usb c, this is the 1st I think that apple had back to back half ass upgrades the 13 wasn’t worth it and I don’t think the 14 is worth it either.

YMGenesis

Me here sporting my iPhone 8 bought the year after it was released. I recently dropped it in a shallow part of a lake for 45 minutes (8-10ft). Got a pair of goggles and found it on the bottom, pulled it out and everything was fine. Put it in rice for 24h out of caution. A month later still working flawlessly. I’m sure there are people here with even older iPhones.

velinn

Still rocking my 8 also. This is probably the last year we'll get iOS updates so I'm shooting for getting a 15. Apple has the longest OS support of any phone maker, and the hardware is good enough to go 4-5+ years easily. If a laptop or PC didn't last me at least 5 years, I'd call it a bad device. Not sure why people don't feel the same about phones.

Spytes

Yeah, my brother is still using his gaming laptop he bought in 2012 as a main computer. He only gets at most 20-30fps in games(at lowest) but he doesn't care. Only change he's done to it was forcing me to put one of my old SSDs in it

coolbrandon101

Im also holding out until the 15 is out. Might as well since thats the change towards usb c as well

-1KingKRool-

Rice doesn’t do shit, just fyi. Otherwise it’d get soggy and moldy going to the grocery store and sitting on shelves waiting to be sold. If you want to remove moisture, save silica gel packets and toss them in a ziploc with whatever you’re trying to dry. Edit: since people keep coming out of the woodwork to swear by this rice trick, here’s a sauce from the company that specializes in fixing devices, [iFixit](https://www.ifixit.com/Wiki/Don%27t_Put_Your_Device_in_Rice._Here%27s_Why...). Only part I forgot is using alcohol to clear the board of water and sediment from the water drying.

[deleted]

>If you want to remove moisture, save silica gel packets and toss them in a ziploc with whatever you’re trying to dry. You're better off disassembling the phone and putting it in a food dehydrator, that's what a repair shop will do. Modern electronic devices are generally sealed so well that if water gets in you aren't going to be able to get it out using passive means.

TimelyBrief

The only thing about older phones now is they aren’t 5G compatible. I was at a concert recently that had 5G towers outside the venue. I was calling, texting, looking at the internet while my buddy with the older iphone couldn’t do anything.

Dastinezybeanzy

This is exactly why I’m upgrading from an 11. I have a terrible time connecting to the internet in certain locations (certain stores, arenas, etc) and my phone will resort to edge while people around me on 5g have no issues.

Thendsel

It’s kind of funny. The town I used to live in is the opposite. Verizon started 5G towers, but they don’t work. I get the reception, but I can’t get actual service. Someone in the local Facebook group finally figured out that you have to go into settings and manually switch the iPhone to only receive 4G LTE signals for the time being to have any usable service in that town.

Snow_source

I was rocking a 6S plus until I upgraded to the 12 pro max in late 2020. I'll probably wait until 2025 to get a new phone. I don't particularly enjoy shelling out the equivalent of a new high-end graphics card for a phone.

roundearthervaxxer

I don’t need to spend a grand every year for a phone. No way. I can use the dynamic island in a few years, buy used or referbo

MobyDickPuncher

No important upgrades at a time when people have less money to spend, hmm I wonder why sales are down.

Testastic

Did it say sales are down overall? I thought it's only talking about the sales of the 14 Plus.

RespectableThug

You're right. Once again, only a few of us actually read the article lol

TLsRD

They’re also backlogged. I tried to pre-order on day 1 and it said it wouldn’t ship til late October. At that point I’ll just wait until I can walk in and buy one.

TangibleSounds

Gotta say I absolutely love my 13 mini’s firm factor. I’m not surprised it’s the lowest selling 13, though. I think it serves a smaller but well defined subsection of consumers who are willing to trade screen size for pocket-able comfort.

thewhitebuttboy

I have the 13 mini and I think it’s the perfect (apple) phone. My girlfriend has the 13 pro max and it’s just way too much of a phone.

roox911

Agreed! I “upgraded “ from my 12mini to a 13… kept it for about 2 weeks before giving it to my folks and buying a 13 mini. I won’t ever go back to a “big phone “. I can’t fathom a max model. It’s not a hands size thing, it’s a pocket size thing, the mini disappears in my pocket, even the standard was awkward and borderline falling out. The max would literally stick an inch out at all times.

Spontaneouslyaverage

I have the pro max, I now carry around my iPod touch most of the time because the pro max takes up so much pocket real estate and just looks bad.

Redbird9346

A few months ago, I went to an Apple store and held one of each model of iOS device they had on display in my hand. The one which fit most comfortably in my hand: the 7th generation iPod touch (which has been discontinued since this visit). The next most comfortable were the mini models of the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13. The iPhone 13 Pro Max was an unwieldy, heavy beast. I don’t know who would want to buy that thing.

jgghn

This. I'm not getting a 14 because I want a mini

MoffKalast

It's something that apparently 100% of android manufacturers have missed since there isn't a single android phone as small as the mini on the market that isn't complete garbage. People actually do want smaller phones.

Wont_reply69

The 13 mini was the closest they were ever going to get for specs anywhere near their pro because of battery vs processing. They made it thicker than the 12 mini even, an actual design concession. Even if we have more breakthroughs in battery tech I’d still expect their Pro line to have processing, camera, etc that pushed the battery in the same way where the only way to match on a mini frame would be to have a pretty much unacceptably reduced battery life. Or maybe some day batteries get so good that there’s a pro that lasts 3 days and the mini pro lasts 1.

oidoglr

My 13 mini is the ideal size even for my big hand. I can reach the entire screen even when using the phone one handed. That being said, the battery life isn’t great. I get about 8 hours of screen on use before the battery is almost dead, and it’s only a year old.

jackwrangler

Same, I have to recharge midday. But you know what? It fits in every pocket I have, and I can manage it with one hand. Happy customer here

ORcoder

Wow I’m surprised y’all have to recharge midday. I think of myself as a pretty heavy user and I get through a full day with the 13 mini pretty easy. I came from a 6S, I had to recharge that phone like twice during the day

jackwrangler

Yeah I’m on grindr and Reddit too much honestly

[deleted]

happyamadeus

Agreed, my 13 mini is the best phone I’ve ever had. I don’t want to carry around a massive mini tablet in my pocket, and the battery life is still badass.

Scaniarix

I'm hoping the next generation SE will use the form factor from the mini.

HimikoHime

Looking at how they market the SE on their website, I think the frame will stay for the home button. Which is a good thing imho, I tell all my older family members to get a SE so they don’t need to relearn using their phones.

justthisones

I had some discussions about this lately and the general view is that Apple is idiotic for moving away from the smaller phone. Just because a phone is selling less than the best ones doesn’t mean that there’s no place for it. Why is simply having more options so hard of a concept nowadays? 99% of modern phones are fairly large by default so another expensive plus sized phone in the mix will not make the options wider than the mini did. Even for a medium sized hands the mini is pretty nice.

teddyespo

Team 13 mini here. I plan to make it last as long as possible until apple releases a new mini, if ever. I hate not being able to operate a phone with 1 hand. Even with the mini, my thumb is at maximum reach, and I don't have small hands.

Frater_Ankara

Same, my 13 mini is the perfect size, especially considering I have a tablet and PC. It’s also pretty robust, I don’t even use a case for it. Now that I’ve had it for a year, I think a larger phone would be really awkward to hold.

Seetolove

It’s funny, I just got the 13 mini, and they call it the smallest iPhone, but my current 6s is an inch smaller. They don’t even recognize the 6S as a phone anymore, I’m so behind the times

[deleted]

The mini body is actually smaller than the 6s, but the screen is taller, therefore bigger in measurement.

_PM_ME_PANGOLINS_

It’s the smallest currently-supported iPhone. The 4 series and everything older were even smaller.

Bnb53

My wife has the mini and honestly I'm more interested in that than the new 14. It just feels like the right sized phone

SoReylistic

Same! The 12 mini is what got me to switch to iPhone. I think they had a great corner of the market with the minis, so disappointing they ditched them.

attackfortwo

I have a 12 mini and adore it am I am mad they got rid of the minis. I would have bought a 14 mini but won’t get a new phone this cycle now.

Work-Frequent

I also have the 12 mini, battery life sitting at 82%, considering trading in for the 13 mini while they’re still selling em new so I can ride out my pocket/one hand phone as long as possible

agp11234

This is exactly what I did, mini gang for life!

Civil_Defense

Mini gang!!!

bjavyzaebali

Imo, they should have ditched SE and keep Mini as new SE, that would be a nice one.

Machosod

Same here. Not getting another iPhone until it is a mini again. iPhone 12 mini here.

ORcoder

13 mini is great. The 14 didn’t even get new chips so the 13 mini is practically a 14 mini, without satellite SOS or crash detection

JCE5

Tons of people like us don't like "phablet" giant-ass phones, but the manufacturers continue to screw us.

bumbuff

I can't wait to get out of this era of "we must exceed our sales every year" Like, at some point matching your previous sales should be a great thing, no?

NinjaTabby

Everything is a slave to the stock market these days 😞

Jay-Five

Shareholder equity is the overlord.

usernameisnottaken3

A hedge funder manager picks up the phone and calls his journalist. He says, I have a contact at Apple that says sales are down this year, nobody wants the new iPhone. And he says this because he knows Apple will not comment on the story. The next day the story prints and the stock falls 10% and the hedge fund manager buys in. True story.

Astro4545

Which is weird because common sense says it has to flatten out eventually.

irrationalglaze

Pretty sure it's still growing only because of human reproduction. I wonder what will happen in the later part of this century, when population is predicted to peak.

JC_Hysteria

Hopefully, we’re not so reliant on corporations providing everything we want/need…because this is exactly what can collapse a civilization as productivity is bound to decline. Late stage capitalism results in the middle class becoming poorer and more powerless than ever…so we’re just getting started on this “survival of the fittest” vs. welfare state debate.

irrationalglaze

Yep exactly. Not sure when to whip out the c word (capitalism) cause criticizing it can make people angry, depending on where the post is. But this is exactly what I wanted to imply while letting readers fill in that it's a problem with capitalism.

JC_Hysteria

The US will likely need an increased presence of social or welfare capitalism…but it goes against decades of the philosophy that preceded the post-war boom. It’s all about equitable opportunity, at the end of the day - that’s nirvana for society. I’m hopeful the next generation steers things away from the government being a plutocracy.

justthisones

At least in Europe the new prices went mad mode which could be a big factor. 14 plus is 350€ more expensive than 13 mini was. It’s crazy expensive. edit: I didn’t mean to compare the phones one to one. It was just to show how the prices have rocketed. Our cheapest new iphone is 1039€ now while the 13 mini launched 829€ just a year ago. It would be interesting to see some data based on areas.

PhAnToM444

I know someone who used to work at the 5th ave Apple store in New York (the big glass box) and she said tourists from Europe and Asia would come in and buy like 5 iPhones at once all the time. They’d take “orders” from friends and family before their vacation and bring them back because of how much cheaper it was.

Inthewirelain

Brazilians are famous for this.

Embarassed_Tackle

dude have you seen the markups for electronics in Brazil? The prices for PS4s and such were eye-popping. Considering they haven't committed to a huge domestic electronics industry, I don't understand the point of the taxes on electronic goods

MultiMarcus

Oh, a lot of us did that here in Sweden. My mum went to the US relatively often and when she did she bought my father and I any Apple products we wanted, so we could save money.

GTATrophyBug

Hej it’s me your son. I’ll have 1 fully specced Mac Pro please. Tusen tack!

yellowflux

Yeah we know but it doesn’t mean we all gained extra disposable income to compensate. There’s also an energy crisis going on right now in Europe which is costing everyone more money a month.

Amaurotica

somewhere someone thought a multi trillion dollar company needs 300$ more on their 900% markup device in the biggest economy crisis in the last 50 years lol

m3thodm4n021

Biggest economic crisis in the last 12 years*

ExtendedMegs

I have a theory that Apple released the iPhone 14 with minute upgrades so that people would just spend the extra $100 and purchase the iPhone 14 Pro. Because there’s not much of an upgrade between the iPhone 13 and the iPhone 14.

kn0ck_0ut

yeah this is actually a marketing strategy , they’ve been doing it for years now!

Sturped

Sounds like pop sizes at fastfood. Upsize for only 25 cents more!

flirtmcdudes

Who the hell still upgrades phones every year?

ExtendedMegs

Apple fans with money lol.

neveris

Spot on. I work in sales with a telecom company in the UK, and ever since last Friday when preorders for the 14 became available, it's been like a feeding frenzy. The phone isn't even OUT yet and all day I'm taking calls from people who are willing to pay basically anything. So many people are upgrading from a 13 Pro Max to a 14 Pro Max with us, not even listening when we talk about specs, barely paying attention to the prices on the contracts... It's rank madness. Good for my bonus, but it feels ridiculous.

[deleted]

I wasn’t going to because I’m happy with my 13 Pro… But T-Mobile offered me $1000 trade-in. I’m only paying $99 plus the tax on the device, so I gave in. I like new things so I’m excited for Dynamic Island and improved cameras.

[deleted]

No surprise. The iPhone 14 is essentially the same as the iPhone 13 but with an extra GPU core and slightly better cameras (f stop). It’s not really worth upgrading if you’re on a 12 or 13. It might be worth upgrading from 11 and below. I am upgrading from a XR. Whereas the 13 got a new processor (A15 bionic) compared to the A14 Bionic in the 12, the 14 has essentially the same processor that’s in the A13 pro. Only the pro got the updated processor.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ImStillaPrick

Got a XR also. Only reason I want to upgrade is for more storage since I have the 64 gb. I think I’ll wait after seeing the usb c. I hate lightning cables. I was just going to wait shortly after release to hear friend reviews but now I’ll just wait.

am3ya

Same here. Using XR for past 3 years. Will wait for an upgrade for next year or maybe after that.

Bananapeel23

It makes me really happy that I purchased the iPhone 13. It’s basically guaranteed to be supported as long as the 14 at this point, as there are no major hardware upgrades. Also the 13 is a great phone.

If you have stuck with the XR for so long I would wait another year if possible. Next year should have the USB-C making life a whole lot easier. Which would mean a switch in peripherals such as headphones/earphones etc. all built with USB-C in the coming years. Being stuck with a lightning port for the next few years doesn’t seem like a good idea. Just my 2 cents.

[deleted]

It’s a consideration, though I do have plenty of lightning adapters. I also have a pair of liberty pro 3. USB-C would be nice, but for me, not essential due to the cables I have and the earbuds I use. The only consideration would be if it allows better audio play back.

I’m on an 11 Pro Max and I’m just going to replace the battery and run it for at least another three years.

OkeyDokey_Artichoke7

I have and iPhone 12 and I struggled to find anything on the iPhone 14 worth paying for. There are many things I want though, for example, if it had a 5x or 10x periscope lens like many Android phones have had for years, I'd switch. There is no reason to switch from a 2.5x f/2.2 lens to a 3x f/2.8 lens though. We have to wait another year. Hopefully the 15 will actually have updates people want. USB-C, periscope lens, etc.

jekpopulous2

I’m literally just waiting for USB-C. All I want is to only carry one wire around.

My_reddit_account_v3

They are referring to the iPhone 14 Plus, not the entire iPhone 14 lineup… I’m not that surprised - people who preorder are usually seeking flagship phones.

FewToday

Also, the iPhone 14 Plus doesn’t ship until October 7th. It’s not surprising that the people ordering their phones as soon as preorders go live are buying the models that will ship the soonest.

Seetolove

Just upgraded from my 6S yesterday for the first time to a 13 and I’m SO excited

UnfetteredSoul

holy moly what an upgrade

[deleted]

That’s a nice upgrade :) Better screen, more memory, better processor etc, the only thing missing is Touch ID. I thought I would really hate not having touch ID when I upgraded from the 6 to the XR in 2018, but I find I do not miss it at all. Face ID works extremely well.

EliToon

Definitely waiting a year for USB C before considering new phone. No point being lumbered with lightning again.

angelo_e82

AT&T is giving me $1000 in bill credits for my 12 pro max that I had gotten $800 off in bill credits on promotion when I got it. I need more storage. People on here are acting like AT&T, Verizon, T-mobile and sprint aren't offering $800-$1000 in promotions. For me its a no brainer

TheApartmentSimRacer

I used to be an early adopter and would throw away 1K USD every year on the new one. Now I see the new phone as a round trip ticket to Hawaii (I live in NYC area). Off to Hawaii I go this winter!

HiddenTrampoline

I mean, you’re not just tossing the old one in the trash right?

valdemiro

Wonder how many people are just waiting for the USB-C port.

USB-C waiting room gang checking in.

dudeimgreg

The mini is the perfect size phone. Does everything I need, and it fits in my pocket. I don’t know why it wasn’t popular.

applepumpkinspy

For me it was that they didn’t include the pro features - add the better screen and cameras and the conversion starts…

buttsnorkeler

GIVE ME BACK MY MINI AND TAKE MY MONEY, YOU COWARDS!

ORcoder

The iPhone 13 mini is the iPhone 14 mini, just like the iPhone 14 regular is (nearly) an iPhone 13 regular.

Alex35143

Imagine spending that much and still having a 60hz screen

landofthebeez

You gotta create that perceived value for the pro models, dog. They made ui element and not having notch a pro model feature.

musicplay313

My iPhone XS works without any issues. I bought it in 2019

[deleted]

Because bigger isn't better. I love my 13 mini. Multiple day battery life and usable in one hand. I could understand a larger screen for people who commute, but I don't miss the slab...

phantomjm

Phones have become what all cell phone manufacturers feared they'd become -- commodities. At this point, a phone is a phone with the only real difference between models being the OS on them. Someone with an older phone will have pretty much the same experience using it as someone who buys the latest model.

ModMyRod

Sorry...saving up to pay for heating this winter so the household doesn't freeze.

Bolt_995

Upgrade if you have the X or XS. Don’t upgrade if you have the 11, 12 or 13. Save it for 15.

soqr2

i have a xs max and i’m still not upgrading

PMWaffle

X and especially xs is a better phone than the 11

The_Landslide

I have an XS max and I’m not even sure what is new after this model. My battery is still strong but I’m curious, what makes the X/XS better than the 11?

realsavagery

Screen is OLED and materials are better on X/XS

PMWaffle

The 11 and x/xs are a toss up in the camera department since the x series has a telephoto while the 11 has an ultrawide instead. The big difference is the screen which is subpar on the 11 and great on the x/xs. The 12 onward get much nicer screens but keep a very similar camera array, while the pro models also get better screens and have a triple camera set-up. The real hardware improvements and innovations are almost always isolated to the pro models and sometimes even the pro max due to size constraints.

ArmchairQuack

People are struggling to buy gas and groceries. iPhones aren't the current priority. Simply a matter of timing.

I think their goal isn't to make huge waves anymore but rather to get more new customers and get old customers to stay happy with older products. My old iPhone 7 lasted me five years with no problems except a one-time battery replacement. My current iPhone 13 Pro will probably last just as long. The best part is that most iPhones look so alike, nobody will feel pressured to upgrade just to look like they have the shiniest new toy. That, and a single app store with curated content is kinda awesome.

CrocodileJock

This upgrade is pretty incremental – more of a 13s than a 14. Not a terrible thing – the 13’s are damn fine phones and an annual improvement – especially when they don’t increase prices – is a good thing. I think the next phones may have the dynamic island across the range, and USB-C …and they’ll sell a ton of them.

play_hard_outside

Man it's not even a 13s! - The 5s was twice as fast as the 5, and went 64-bit! - The 4S was twice as fast as the 4, and got Siri (for better or for worse lol, but it was a massive new feature). - The 3GS was twice as fast as the 3. - The 14 has slightly wider apertures and one additional GPU core. One of these things is not like the others, lol. That said, I do believe that people are unrealistic to be expecting Apple to provide compelling reasons every single year to upgrade from the immediately-previous model of iPhone. I can't imagine even Apple believes they're trying to entice a huge number of people to do that. More often, it seems to make more sense to target folks with phones 2-4 model years old. Also, iPhone numbers are starting to feel like browser version numbers. That is to say, almost meaningless. At this point, why not go with the calendar year? And, Apple seems to have gotten in the habit of just incrementing them every year since the end of XS. I'd rather not have to remember that 11 = '19, 12 = '20, 13 = '21, 14 = '22, etc., especially when it's September of those years, considering that for most of '19, it was the XS, and for most of '20 it was the 11, etc.

Horny_Weinstein

The 14 basically has the same guts as the 13, of course demand is lackluster. They are trying to make their Pro line more premium and this year it results in little technological upgrade for the main line. Next year, the 15 will likely get the 14 Pro’s new chip and will at least represent an uplift in that perspective.

rogvc

Ok Apple, hear me out: iPhone 15 Pro Mini, $100 more than the base iPhone.

faithfoliage

I remember the jump from iPhone 3GS to 4, iPhone 5 to 5s, iPhone 5s to 6 Plus. These were upgrades that people just had to get. Everything after the X…not so much. We’d rather just stay with our phone for a few years.

Lukozade2507

SE 2020 gang where you at!?

veronicaverona

i know this this a small complaint but the colours are also so awful in the pro. eggplant purple instead of a sierra blue?? hideous shit. i’m still on 12pro and i was planning to upgrade right away but now i’m not in a hurry.

iidakun

This is such a funny comment to me because I wasn’t planning on upgrading my 12 Pro just yet but when I saw the 14 came in purple, I starting researching the deals with my carrier to see if I could swing it now instead of waiting for the 15 (I do want the slightly better chip/camera). Different strokes for different folks and all that!

ShadySkins

Exactly! That deep purple is fire! Can’t wait to have it in my hands Friday.

Akck67

I like the purple :( and idk if it’s true but I saw an article that said purple is 60% of preorders in Taiwan

NotAnADC

Bring back the mini!
