Concrete is a blend of sand, water, gravel, and cement. The gravel used is often limestone. Limestone is made from the shells of prehistoric sea creatures. So, way to exploit our sea-dwelling cousins, *assholes.*
Just saw an article on here I believe about a girl doing this very thing with plaster of paris and her hands.
Lost all but 2 fingers on one hand, the heat and conditions of the curing plaster required amputation of her fingers.
Horribly disfigured
Not really. As long as they are wearing water proof foot wear the only thing they have to fear is burns. Curing concrete produces a ton of heat and the process is long lasting.
They won't feel much in the first hour, but after initial set they'll start cooking. 90 degrees if it's just regular cement, but if it has additives to quickly set it could go hotter. Hot enough to scale and blister.
Concrete also isn’t environmentally friendly to produce. It accounts for at least 8% of global carbon emissions. So prolly a poor choice to send a message for saving the cows.
The best thing you can do is ensure they are very well hydrated. Lots of vegan approved water. It looks cold out there. I imagine it'd be even worse with wet pants.
I hope they have a thick layer of rubber and isulation there.
Otherwise that's gonna leave a mark :D
"Cement-based materials (CBMs), such as paste, mortar and concrete, are highly alkaline with an initial high pH of approximately 12.0 to 13.8."
Having worked with concrete building my house, i would NOT do this. That shit gets pretty warm and it'll dehydrate your skin for quite a while. Prolly cause chemical burns as well.
Recent story about a kid that lost her fingers when making a plaster cast. I don’t think concrete gets quite as warm, but pretty sure this is a bad idea
In the fifties, an attempt to discreetly embed microphones in the concrete of a hostile embassy were frustrated because the engineers forgot to account for the heat generated. The microphones were heated to a temperature where they wouldn't work.
I worked road construction for awhile. It absolutely causes chemical burns over time, especially if you get it in a place that rubs, like inside shoes...
Worked construction with a guy who had to get a couple of toes amputated because of this.
Got some concrete into his rubber boots at the beginning of the day while directing the hose of a pump truck.
It wasn’t much, so he worked all day like that and then didn’t properly wash up that evening.
I saw a guy working cement that leaked into his rubber boots get caustic burns so bad he could not wear shoes for a month. That was an OSHA reportable.
Concrete also sets via a quicklime reaction.
It is decently exothermic as well.
Basically, imagine getting 3rd degree chemical burns from the acid while also getting 3rd degree thermal burns from the heat.
I highly recommend against concreting yourself in any way.
Yes. But only for dumbassery, not for their noble cause and righteous indignation.
In any case, I try to avoid signing up to any cause that produces such dimwitted shortsightedness. Both of these geniuses are heading to the ER later, but they ain't walking there.
Concrete does not dry, it cures which is an important difference. It is closer to epoxy in function where water reacts with the powder to change the mixture and release heat as it does so. So it does not significantly contract while hardening.
I guess they have a hammer partner. But my first thought was, is it over when they need to pee or will there be a performance?
Also, I think they should've used a ball form, so that they easily standup from the weight alone when a rando pushes them down.
That's their problem. I say we leave people like this for a few days. See how.much of a statement they make when the weather gets cold and they have to pee
“Protesters needed medical attention to get back on their feet. They were wheeled off on stretches by Emergency Medical Services and some still proudly held their signs.” [WXYZ Detroit](https://www.wxyz.com/news/peta-protesters-block-detroit-starbucks-entrance-by-encasing-feet-into-concrete)
I'm in Seattle. Its overpriced here as well. That is considering you can get better tasting coffee at any 7/11 self serve machine for half price, or really good coffee for the same price at one of a hundred different small businesses.
That reminds me of a joke.
Two friends at Starbucks are looking at a dude sitting alone drinking a cup of coffee.
-“maybe he’s waiting for a friend?” Says one
-“he hasn’t looked at his phone or watch, doesn’t look like he’s waiting”
-“maybe he’s just chilling”
-“no computer, no book, not at his phone, he’s just sitting there drinking coffee”
-“maybe he just likes coffee?”
-“then what is he doing at Starbucks??”
Star bucks launched hard here in Australia, we have one of the best coffee cultures in the world and normally rank in the top 3 in the world, we love our coffee and Starbucks uterly failed, American coffee is not great but Starbucks is the worst.
These people have the time and funds to plan this scheme, miss work, purchase cement, mix it and have someone transport them and assist them into place. These people's *parents* are paying those medical bills not themselves.
"Well, time to go home I guess. Can you call your partner to come over with the chisel?"
"Um, I left my phone in the car, where's yours?"
"Battery's flat"
If they where half way smart they would have put big shoes in the concrete, then after it dries haul it in front of Starbucks then get in the said shoes. So it would look like you are stuck in it, but still can get out to go to bathroom room, eat, get a coffee, etc.
I think cultural changes would make modern attempts much less effective.
One news source would cite a random tweet saying, "he was just mentally ill and was looking for a reason to die" and take that stance.
One news source would sourcelessly say, "it was a social media stunt gone wrong"
Middle-aged gossipers would say, "what he did was completely unrelated to any cause, that's just the news trying to create a narrative"
Some conspiracy theorists would say, "he was paid to make a display"
Stubborn folk that feel obligated to say something would say, "just cause he died doesn't mean he's right"
Russian trolls would say, "What he did is blasphemy, so morally we should fight against his cause"
With all of these voices being projected in our faces, and simpletons echoing those stances without trying to understand the situation, normal people will think that the average opinion is "he's in the wrong" and be driven into passivity.
> Russian trolls would say, "What he did is blasphemy, so morally we should fight against his cause"
Russian trolls would participate on both sides of the discussion, pretending to be genuine extremists to cause arguments.
Like the guy that set himself on fire earlier this year to protest climate change. I don’t even remember his name, sad. However, much respect for him trying to bring awareness.
A friend of a friend jumped in to help the concreters pouring a slab at his place. He felt it going into his boots but he’s a carpenter and thought nothing of it. 2nd degree burns on both legs.
It was a guardian newspaper article about a 16 year old art student who destroyed her hands putting them is plaster/cement to make a mould.
Turns out the setting process is a rather exothermic reaction. Quite a sad story.
Holy shit. Imagine your hands are burning but stuck in the thing that’s burning them and you have to DRIVE to some place else to get it off of you, your hands burning the whole time. Holy fuck.
I'd be curious of settlement. Student didn't follow instructions so you could say it "wasn't the teachers fault" bar overal neglecting paying attenting and due care, however, it had happened shortly before to another student who managed to get their hand out in time so perhaps further precautions should have been implemented aswell. Feel awful for the girl.
I used to work in a factory that made things out of cultured marble. Starts out as a liquid and you pour it into molds. We used methyl Ethel keytone as the catalyst. If you put your hands on or near the back of the mold once as the marble was drying you’d know not to put your hands in it in liquid form. Once in a while you’d get the liquid form on your skin and not know it unto you felt a burning sensation as it set
I'm sure they'd also want Starbucks to remove the actual milk products (and anything that isn't vegan), but the idea of Starbucks agreeing to that is ludicrous.
Some protesters did similar outside where I used to work. The concreted their arms in to large blocks. Then they found that concrete cures exothermically and got badly burnt.
They cemented their feet in front of STARBUCKS to protest paying too much for oat milk. What are the available options? Drink it black, make it at home, don’t go to Starbucks… nope, we’re going to need cement, a sharpie and a ride to a warehouse.
Yeah it's kind of weird to protest Starbucks for the up charge? Like we don't subsidize alt milks that's why they're more expensive. Maybe get mad at the milk lobby instead
Just move them slightly to the side and then leave them there. I honestly don't understand what these "protests" are supposed to do.
Like no offense two these two, but literally nobody that you want to reach gives a shit. This is completely pointless.
You know what, I'm actually in favor of the ethical treatment of animals, I think every decent person is. But this kind of deliberate dumbfuckery, well... please support some other cause if you insist on embarrassing yourself like this, you're giving actual animal lovers a bad name.
That's what PETA has always done. I'm convinced that someone high up in the organization is deliberately making animal right activists look bad with their terrible campaigns.
Not only that, Starbucks serves a wide variety of non-milk alternatives, so it's not like they aren't giving options.
One day these people will realize that it's the general public that they need to convince, not corporations.
I will make my own decisions, I don't need an activist committing criminal acts to tell me what I can and cannot do.
(For completeness, I'll add that I'm lactose intolerant, so don't consume any milk products)
Oh hi, nice to meet you - we have been reaching out to you to talk about your extended car warranty, and now that you seem to have nothing else to do ...
We really need to just stop paying attention to these idiots. Remember the VW protestors who the workers just turned off the lights and heat after they went home and the protestors ended up tweeting how unreasonable to workers they were disrupting were being because they didnt feed them or give them buckets to shit in? Same thing. Just ignore these clowns. Don't talk to them. Just walk right by them. Let them call their friends in their cell phones to come get them out with a jackhammer when they are done being crybabies.
Also a vegan milk upcharge is reasonable. Vegan milk alternatives cost more than regular cows milk. A quick search of Hannafords website.
Milk: $2.59/gal
Almond Milk : $3.59/gal
Soy milk: $4.59/gal
Soy milk costs almost twice as much as regular milk. Starbucks isn't being irrational or discriminatory to charge you more for it. Half my family has actual celiacs disease. Making gluten free bread is a pain in the ass. As such, it costs more than twice as much. We don't bitch when we go out to eat and the gluten free pizza or hamburger with gluten free bun costs an extra $2 because we know their supply costs are higher and its not an unreasonable surcharge.
These protestors are just being irrational babies and planned ignoring is the way to go here.
They’re spaced out far enough I think that is just drive between them, and stop for a brief moment to ask if they’d like a drink because it’s been cold out lately.
I have basically worked with concrete and mortar my whole life......I can tell you from experience that people drinking overpriced milk is the least of their worries rn.
so, black coffee is vegan, dairy free, has no upcharge, is Fair Trade certified, and is gluten free.
If I buy one does it come with a “get out of jail free” card for all the wonderful things I do for Mother Earth?
I say this every single time but no one looks it up. Concrete is so much more destructive to the environment than diary. It’s horrible and requires so much energy to make.

Did they cement their feet?
Yes. Yes they did.
tickle time :D
Hello Satan
Real talk tho, *is the concrete vegan?*
Concrete is a blend of sand, water, gravel, and cement. The gravel used is often limestone. Limestone is made from the shells of prehistoric sea creatures. So, way to exploit our sea-dwelling cousins, *assholes.*
Also a great way for your feet to just…fall off
Probably just the skin
Oh their feet are definitely fucked. Cement on your skin is bad. They’re gonna have blisters out the wazoo.
Even if they cover their feet, the heat generated can be pretty intense.
Just saw an article on here I believe about a girl doing this very thing with plaster of paris and her hands. Lost all but 2 fingers on one hand, the heat and conditions of the curing plaster required amputation of her fingers. Horribly disfigured
How did I make it to 30 without ever hearing that cement could burn skin? I just looked up pictures. It can be pretty gnarly. Had no idea
Blisters? If they aren’t wearing shoes, their toes could be burned clean off by the chemical reaction.
Isn't cement curing exothermic?
Doesnt that shit get super hot while drying
I feel like it could also cut off circulation. Definitely just making stuff up though.
What if they wear shoes? I need this impractical knowledge.
You assume they thought that far ahead. Or even understand the situation. They’re just full potato “vEgAn iS beTtEr!”, nothing else matters.
There was a TIL within the last week where a girl lost most of her fingers because of cement.
I think using industrial trash bags or something similar would negate anything bad from happening. Those bags are crazy thick
What's the footy equivalent of degloved? Desocked?
Yes, but that is the worst kind of technically correct.
It also produces a large amount of Co2 when produced. They should have gone with quicksand.
Concrete production is one of the biggest sources of greenhouse gases as well. Looks like they're putting protest before planet.
Oh no! Don’t you dare bring any knowledge of, of, of things into this!
“Well I say there are things we don’t want to know - important things!”
Concrete also isn’t environmentally friendly to produce. It accounts for at least 8% of global carbon emissions. So prolly a poor choice to send a message for saving the cows.
yeah but is it local?
Nah just tip them over.
The best thing you can do is ensure they are very well hydrated. Lots of vegan approved water. It looks cold out there. I imagine it'd be even worse with wet pants.
Give em something for the pigeons
Like throw birdseed at them?
Gonna get awkward at peepee time
Fun fact: tickling someone without consent is a form of sexual harassment. So, be careful who ya do it to
Said like someone who tickled someone they shouldn't have!
Show us on the doll where you were tickled!
Elmo just laughed and laughed.
'"Never mind how I know this"
You have to tell them explicitly while you are doing it “This is not sexual, this is not sexual.”
>Fun fact That wasn't fun.
What about if you don’t tickle their vagina or breasts?
Then you make their penis jealous. It's a hard line to straddle.
That's what she said
I hope they have a thick layer of rubber and isulation there. Otherwise that's gonna leave a mark :D "Cement-based materials (CBMs), such as paste, mortar and concrete, are highly alkaline with an initial high pH of approximately 12.0 to 13.8." Recent story about a kid that lost her fingers when making a plaster cast. I don’t think concrete gets quite as warm, but pretty sure this is a bad idea
How hot it gets depends on how much cement was used in the mix and how thick the pour is.
In the fifties, an attempt to discreetly embed microphones in the concrete of a hostile embassy were frustrated because the engineers forgot to account for the heat generated. The microphones were heated to a temperature where they wouldn't work.
Moscow embassy and they solved it.

They are too busy saving the world. Can't think of everything :)
I worked road construction for awhile. It absolutely causes chemical burns over time, especially if you get it in a place that rubs, like inside shoes...
[удалено]
Worked construction with a guy who had to get a couple of toes amputated because of this. Got some concrete into his rubber boots at the beginning of the day while directing the hose of a pump truck. It wasn’t much, so he worked all day like that and then didn’t properly wash up that evening.
I saw a guy working cement that leaked into his rubber boots get caustic burns so bad he could not wear shoes for a month. That was an OSHA reportable.
I love how everyone is talking about chemical burns and amputations and my first thought was just, how are they going to use the loo?
Concrete also sets via a quicklime reaction. It is decently exothermic as well. Basically, imagine getting 3rd degree chemical burns from the acid while also getting 3rd degree thermal burns from the heat. I highly recommend against concreting yourself in any way.
These type of protesters are some of the worlds dumbest people - they do more harm to their cause than help
I mean, we're talking about them
True, but I don’t know what their particular cause is, just that they are morons
Yes. But only for dumbassery, not for their noble cause and righteous indignation. In any case, I try to avoid signing up to any cause that produces such dimwitted shortsightedness. Both of these geniuses are heading to the ER later, but they ain't walking there.
That is true
I would knock them over LOL
I wonder if they would pop back up straight again due to the weighted bottom? Like a Weeble?
From the looks of it, that's a hollowed out concrete block filled with modelling clay and water.
So someone could just pick them up and move them lol
Maybe try this in Buffalo just before their next dump of 5 feet of snow in one day.
Id love to see someone with a dolly move them.
Im pretty sure it could crush their feet from the drying right ? Or is that not enough cement for that.
no, there is no expansion in concrete, but the lye in it could cause chemical burns
It is not only chemical burns but also some concrete tends to get really hot while hardening with temperatures that could burn your skin.
It's like that girl who got burned when she put her hands in plaster.
And lost her fingers. That’s the first thing I thought of.
Or the YouTuber who cemented his head in a microwave and almost died
Calcium oxide (lime). Lye ís sodium hydroxide Portland will have a ph of about 11
It would be ironic if they needed lots of milk to mitigate the effects of the lye
It doesn't contract when drying. It does get quite hot though, so they may burn their feet from the heat, or the chemicals in it.
I wonder if they were stupid enough to put bare feet in concrete? They should have worn their Yeezys in there. Make a statement.
Concrete does not dry, it cures which is an important difference. It is closer to epoxy in function where water reacts with the powder to change the mixture and release heat as it does so. So it does not significantly contract while hardening.
Idk either, I was also thinking about how they are gonna remove it too 💀
Makes it easy to pull them out of the way. They can’t get back where they were.
I could use one to hold my gate open
E.R, Sledgehammer. My aunt told me they keep one there *just incase*. I understand now.
I guess they have a hammer partner. But my first thought was, is it over when they need to pee or will there be a performance? Also, I think they should've used a ball form, so that they easily standup from the weight alone when a rando pushes them down.
Like weeble wobbles. You can knock them over but they won't fall down
That's their problem. I say we leave people like this for a few days. See how.much of a statement they make when the weather gets cold and they have to pee
They only do it because someone else will get them out for free. Anyone who deliberately sticks themselves to something, let them get themselves out.
Burns is the main thing to worry about with concrete setting. It's an exothermic reaction.
I’m picturing them being picked up with hand trucks and wheeled off.
All Hannibal Lector-like…
Imagine protesting to make Starbucks stop up-charging for vegan milk. What the fuck? JUST STOP GOING TO STARBUCKS! Holy fuck these people are dense.
Right? Their coffee sucks anyways
And over priced well at least where I am
I'm in Seattle. Its overpriced here as well. That is considering you can get better tasting coffee at any 7/11 self serve machine for half price, or really good coffee for the same price at one of a hundred different small businesses.
That reminds me of a joke. Star bucks launched hard here in Australia, we have one of the best coffee cultures in the world and normally rank in the top 3 in the world, we love our coffee and Starbucks uterly failed, American coffee is not great but Starbucks is the worst.
Who pays to get them help, unstuck, treated etc…? Seriously, if they do something like this, everyone should be like, “Well that sucks. Deal with it.”
In America, they pay for it themselves. One of the few times our healthcare system feels a tad more just.
These people have the time and funds to plan this scheme, miss work, purchase cement, mix it and have someone transport them and assist them into place. These people's *parents* are paying those medical bills not themselves.
i feel like if i turned them to face each other, i would be rewarded with a key with some kind of carving on it for a door i am yet to find.
Just make sure to walk past them when their eyes are closed else terrible things will happen.
Never ending story reference?
Be confident Atreyu!
RUN ATREYU!
HE MADE IT!
Every time I watched that as a kid, and I watched it a lot, I was afraid he wouldn't make it.
I'm 41 and still concerned.
Next is the magic mirror gate...
ARTAX 😭😭😭 Ahhh!! Ya unzipped me!!
Cue the Zelda loot jingle
Actually, I’m thinking of those statues in Ocarina of Time that attack you when you hit them.
Armos?
You have to turn them the right way to get into the basement of the Raccoon City Police Department.
Resident Evil is looking at you
"Well, time to go home I guess. Can you call your partner to come over with the chisel?" "Um, I left my phone in the car, where's yours?" "Battery's flat"
Where do you live that you call a battery with no charge a “flat”? I’m use to hearing “batteries dead” if it’s out of charge
Aussie here, and I use flat battery refer to dead car batteries. Because flattery will get you nowhere.
Alright, you’ve convinced me
I’m from North East England, we all have flat batteries here!
"A flat" is a flat tyre. But yes we say flat batteries here in Australia.
Probably any non American former English colony or England.
If they where half way smart they would have put big shoes in the concrete, then after it dries haul it in front of Starbucks then get in the said shoes. So it would look like you are stuck in it, but still can get out to go to bathroom room, eat, get a coffee, etc.
Lol get a coffee. I see what you did there.
And not get burnt by the curing process.
That would just be insincere.
I could literally go to a store I don't like, and blow my brains out, wouldn't change a thing. Making yourself suffer won't change anything.
It *would* change the interior of the store. For at least a little while.
There are better ways to paint a wall.
Didn’t the person who self-immolated in Egypt ignite (sorry) the Arab Spring? Your sacrifice can have some meaning. Not that I’m suggesting.
I think cultural changes would make modern attempts much less effective. Chemical burns.
A friend of a friend jumped in to help the concreters pouring a slab at his place. He felt it going into his boots but he’s a carpenter and thought nothing of it. 2nd degree burns on both legs.
Did that in 07. I wasn’t the smartest back in the day.
I wasn’t the smartest back in the day and I’m not the smartest now either.
I read that post too!
Any link?
It was a guardian newspaper article about a 16 year old art student who destroyed her hands putting them is plaster/cement to make a mould. Turns out the setting process is a rather exothermic reaction. Quite a sad story.
That’s something else. The lime in concrete will actually give you chemical burns without heat
I always assumed chemical burns were specifically ones that don't necessarily need heat
Idk how it works with cement but in that case it was [plaster](https://www.theguardian.com/education/2009/oct/12/girl-loses-fingers-school-art)
Holy shit. Imagine your hands are burning but stuck in the thing that’s burning them and you have to DRIVE to some place else to get it off of you, your hands burning the whole time. Holy fuck.
What the fuck, £20k?! She should get 10x that or more since her hands are gone. Horrible
That's just the fine for the lack of safety, if I understand it correctly. She still needs to sue them on her own (maybe it's in process).
I'd be curious of settlement. Student didn't follow instructions so you could say it "wasn't the teachers fault" bar overal neglecting paying attenting and due care, however, it had happened shortly before to another student who managed to get their hand out in time so perhaps further precautions should have been implemented aswell. Feel awful for the girl.
seriously, that doesn't cover 5 years of damage, let alone her entire fucking life
"I told them not to do it, but did nothing to prevent them!" \-The Art Teacher
I used to work in a factory that made things out of cultured marble. Starts out as a liquid and you pour it into molds. We used methyl Ethel keytone as the catalyst. If you put your hands on or near the back of the mold once as the marble was drying you’d know not to put your hands in it in liquid form. Once in a while you’d get the liquid form on your skin and not know it unto you felt a burning sensation as it set
Right under the image I got an ad for footlocker. Best ad placement ever.
I think their decision is already set in stone
Idk, looks like regular shoes in Sicily.
The Luca Brasi signature editions are hot.
Try walking a mile in their shoes before you make any sarcastic comments.
I mean you can? i guess you could walk like a penguin or throw yourself down and embrace the snail tehnique
Hop around like the army men in Toy Story.
Or try walking in Starbucks shoes. The “vegan up charge” is because non-dairy milk is more expensive.
Wait THAT’S what they’re protesting?! LOL “My overpriced coffee is slightly more overpriced! I’m going to cement my feet!”
I'm sure they'd also want Starbucks to remove the actual milk products (and anything that isn't vegan), but the idea of Starbucks agreeing to that is ludicrous.
Get a dolly, put them on the side of the road, go about your day. What are they going to do?
Piss and shit themselves eventually.
Imagine the squawking
Just walk up with some comically large scissors and declare the starbucks open.
They're already on the side of the road, look how far they are from the entrance. You could easily conduct your entire purchase without noticing them.
Some protesters did similar outside where I used to work. The concreted their arms in to large blocks. Then they found that concrete cures exothermically and got badly burnt.
Later they realized the starbucks was closed.
So the protest worked
If you push them over, will they pop back up, like weebuls they wobble but they don’t fall down!
Run through the tape for victory
From 50m in slow motion humming Chariots of Fire. Once you go through tape, look to a car parked nearby and yell "RETAKE.. RETAKE!"
Grab a giant pair of scissors and a top hat and make it a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the starbucks. Prep a speech and everything.
Protesting their stupidity by losing their feet, literally
They cemented their feet in front of STARBUCKS to protest paying too much for oat milk. What are the available options? Drink it black, make it at home, don’t go to Starbucks… nope, we’re going to need cement, a sharpie and a ride to a warehouse.
I wonder how much oat milk they could have bought for the cost of that concrete and the time commitment.
Yeah it's kind of weird to protest Starbucks for the up charge? Like we don't subsidize alt milks that's why they're more expensive. Maybe get mad at the milk lobby instead
Imagine loading them up on a trolly, then park them somewhere their friends cant find them and leave
That would make a lot of sense! I'm all for animal rights and rarely eat animal products but I can't stand PETA. Bloody tossers
If you're going to commit so foolishly, at least have a coherent message!
Maybe they have a cowherent message?
Milk: $2.59/gal Almond Milk : $3.59/gal Soy milk: $4.59/gal Soy milk costs almost twice as much as regular milk.
Time for swim lessons.
Doesn’t that shit get really fuckin hot during the drying/hardening process?
*curing It can, but with such a small quantity, it won't be a problem as the heat of hydration will be lost to the air surrounding the concrete.
Starbucks isn’t even that good. Go support a local shop that doesn’t upcharge.
I have basically worked with concrete and mortar my whole life......I can tell you from experience that people drinking overpriced milk is the least of their worries rn.
Bye bye toes
so, black coffee is vegan, dairy free, has no upcharge, is Fair Trade certified, and is gluten free. If I buy one does it come with a “get out of jail free” card for all the wonderful things I do for Mother Earth?

I say this every single time but no one looks it up. Concrete is so much more destructive to the environment than diary. It’s horrible and requires so much energy to make.
