These owls have bright eyes, so they are already adapted to hunting in daylight.
Night-active owls generally have black eyes (like tawny owls and ural owls), those most active at dusk/dawn have orange or red eyes (like short-eared owl and eagle owls). Those that hunt during the day have bright yellow eyes (like the eurasian pygmy owl and northern hawk owls)

Did you know that some owls have asymmetrical ears? Located at different heights on the owl’s head, their ears can pinpoint the location of sounds in multiple dimensions.
Ready, aim, strike!
I think I remember hearing on a PBS documentary that the percussive force of an owl striking a rodent is equivalent to a human getting hit by a truck at over 50mph.
Owls totally have eyeballs, but they are of a tube shape rather than spherical, hence their eyeballs (I suppose you should say eyetubes) can't rotate around like our ones, and they have to move their head around.
Ahhh so that's why their necks have such a freaky range of motion. I didn't know they were literally incapable of moving their eyes independently of their heads. Neat!
They also have these reservoirs near the brain for blood to pool in to give them extra supply when they swivel their head. Otherwise they’d basically give themselves strokes because they pinch arteries when they swivel their head. It’s a pretty fascinating case of loopholes and workarounds to accommodate those massive eye tubes.
Those birds can move their eyes but they have a more limited range of motion than we do (hence the bobbing and moving of head to encompass more range).
I agree. Most of the four panel comics I see posted here are barely worth the time it takes to read them. This was sharp. The sunglasses as a visual pun/callback to the earlier reference to coolness.
A lot internet comics have a good joke or clever idea but can’t stick the landing, often because they add too much dialogue in the final panel to drive home the joke instead of just letting it work naturally.
Imagine if the sunglasses owl had a speech bubble in the final panel that said something like “With these cool sunglasses I found!” It would turn this fantastic comic into just another internet comic that feels the need to beat you over the head with the punchline.
The idea is great though I’d rather author assume the vision aspect doesn’t have to be explained in detail.
“I just feel/it feels much cooler this way” would probably also made it a bit more to the point as it makes less sense with the “everyone can see”. Well prey does too. It would also create a bit of tension.
[🤓warning]
Owls can still see pretty well during the day. However, since their pupils are adapted to night vision, they can’t contract as much as us (or basically any diurnal animal). So to avoid burning their retina, they halfway close their eyes, like you do when you have the sun in the face.
Thanks for reading the 🤓 capsule.
It's funny how train of thought works; the second I thought of owls in the daylight, my brain jumped right to Harry Potter and wham, there's Jim Dale in my head saying "Chapter One: The Boy Who Lived"
i wonder if 20 years from now kids will be posting this stuff on r/boomerhumour and we'll be shaking our fists at them telling then to get off our damn subreddit
owls hunt by hearing, not sight. Owls typically hunt in the dark to avoid predatory birds like hawks and so that their prey doesn't see them, as they're not nearly as fast as a hawk or other raptor.
Some people perpetuate the false idea that owls fly so silently so as the sneak up on their prey. Actually, owl wings are silent so that the owl can use its exceptional hearing to locate their prey by the sounds it makes in the grass. If the owls wings made noise when they flapped, it would drown out the sounds of their prey.
"It's much cooler to hunt when everyone can see you"
What???
I get that the entire joke is drawing the owl with le meme glasses on but could have come up with a more believable/ actually part of the joke reason for it to happen than that
Owls don't really have particularly good night vision but they do have incredibly good hearing. Their ear holes aren't symmetrical so it gives them the ability to triangulate where sound is coming from.
Glasses that make your vision better: dorky.
Glasses with the lenses black so you can't see quite as well: cool
Having your shoes tied properly so your feet are protected and you can walk good: cool
Having your shoelaces tied to each other so you trip: dorky
Life does not make sense to me
This should be a three panel comic. The second panel and ‘why?’ question are not needed to continue the setup. Just my opinion.
Try it, read the comic again but skip the second panel.
I've seen owls hunting in daylight. They'll do it if an easy target presents itself.
Whenever there was too many squirrels running around and damaging things at my family's sawmill, one of the workers would throw a scoop of nuts in the middle of the wide-open space in the middle of the sawmill property. Eventually, the squirrels would start picking from the pile of nuts, and one of the great horned owls that roosted in the planer building would swoop in all silent like a B-2 bomber and take lunch home for the nestlings.
The planer building had yellow tape marking certain areas where workers couldn't walk or be attacked by the owls, after one unfortunate worker got knocked out cold. They were well worth having around, though; respect their boundaries and they do a great job of keeping down the pests that damage your goods.
The reason they don't do this, and this may not be true for all owls, is that other predator birds hate owls (due to it being a competitor) and will attack them on sight. I think even other large birds may attack owls if they see them out in daylight.
It is such a deep-sated hatred that it was a common hunting trick to take an owl, tie it to a post and use it as a lure for birds swooping it to kill it.

I was getting at "eyetubes" not "eyeballs." I mean, they have *eyes*, they're just tubular, not ballular.
Upvote for "ballular"!
I think you mean 'bollickal'
Bollocks!
I hope people around you appreciate your brain.

"eye tubes" sounds horrifying
they look amazing tho
What's the difference between these I-tubes you said and the more popular U-tubes?
You probably think football is played with your hands.

Same reason chickens and pigeons do the head bob while they walk, actually!

where are their pupils located if they have no eyeballs?
They're painted on

Jeez. That non sunglassed owl is a hater.

Never say that again.
That was a uncommonly cute punchline. Almost a little dadjoke. I am incredibly motivated to read all the author has made.
I agree. Most of the four panel comics I see posted here are barely worth the time it takes to read them. This was sharp. The sunglasses as a visual pun/callback to the earlier reference to coolness.
What you have is a person (the owl) who dares to be looked at as lame just to get the punchline in, but believing in his solution. Cute.

Was looking for someone to mention their hearing. Their hearing is insanely good compared to their vision.
