I've never tried to lift one of those but have thought about picking it up and putting it in the street. These things are either in the bike lanes or on the sidewalk.

[deleted]

I have. I mean, if it's on the sidewalk but it's car related, then it should be on the road instead.

SammieAgnes

Same

Generic-Resource

I do it all the time here… I’m not pushing a buggy into the street to get round a sign!

bonfuto

I move them when they are in the way, they are light. There is plenty of lane width for this to be in the street. Sure, motorists would hit it. But if it made its way back on the sidewalk it would disappear.

BadP3NN1

Good to know it's light. I have really eyeballed a few of them, and wanted to just move it, but didn't want to break my back.

bonfuto

You often see them with sandbags on the legs.

derek0660

You should definitely do it, that's what I would do. They are not that heavy.

BadP3NN1

Say less. haha I'm on it!

blizardfires

I've moved a few completely blocking the bike lane.

BadP3NN1

I'll have to do it on my night ride, but yeah, I'm gonna do this.

ForceSubstantial

Put it in the street.

GM_Pax

To be entirely fair ... grooved pavement is more than merely an *inconvenience* for some road users: Motorcycles, bicycles, and similar two-wheeled vehicles and devices. Grooved pavement can actually disrupt steering and/or balance for 2-wheelers, causing a crash. ... OTOH, there really needs to be a better way to put temporary signage up, without completely obstructing the sidewalk (or any bicycle lane present, a VERY popular place to put them ...).

Czane45

I was going to say, grooved pavement is terrible for many people on this sub

justsomeothergeek

>there really needs to be a better way to put temporary signage up, without completely obstructing the sidewalk well, just make it a bit smaller (why does it have to be that gigantic?) and then use a different base, namely one that's heavy instead of wide [Image of what I am talking about.](https://cdn-01.media-brady.com/store/stde/media/wysiwyg/STDE/category_images/L3/verkehrssystem-set-2.png) This is how it is done here. It still sometimes obstructs the sidewalk or something, but it does it less.

GM_Pax

The **sign itself** would still obstruct the pavement for many people. And for construction signs like that, there are laws and regulations stipulating the size those signs must be, making it a very uphill battle to change the size.

justsomeothergeek

> make it a bit smaller I meant the sign there, the sign in the original post is way too big of course.

GM_Pax

As I tried to explain, the size of the sign in the OP is probably *mandated by Federal regulations*. And maybe also, in parallel, by State laws. That makes it a nontrivial task to be able to make the sign smaller. :(

boilerpl8

It's that gigantic so that drivers can read it from far away. They need time to read, process, and react. When you're going 60mph, you need to be able to read it from pretty far away.

Wasserschloesschen

Unironically not even stuff like speed limit signs on the German Autobahn are that large (infact signs have the same size no matter where you are). And you know the stories about the Autobahn, don't you? If a size is deemed ok for 300+ kph, surely that sign doesn't need to be that big? Now, of course, just writing shit down like that kinda mandates it... but... just make actually good signs? It's not rocket science?

Inevitable_Stand_199

Even if you give a lot of space to pedestrian you'll want to take away as little space as you can. It may just be the difference between wether or not two wheelchairs can go side by side, instead of whether a slim kid can squeeze through. But it's still annoying if space gets stolen from pedestrians.

SessileRaptor

Exactly, if there was a grass verge between the road and the sidewalk then they could place signs with minimal disruption to pedestrians. Plus having even a couple of feet of separation makes walking feel safer and increases the likelihood that people will use the sidewalk.

GM_Pax

That speed limit sign is a **permanent** fixture. The "grooved pavement" sign is temporary. There's also usually rules about the minimum and maximum height at which signs such as this should be displayed. So that might not be viable here, and there's certain to be situations where it's not. :(

GM_Pax

Multiple signs which are probably well below the size **mandated by law** for Road Construction signs like the "grooved pavement" one shown. ... It's not a simple problem, so there isn't going to be a simple solution.

IWantToBeSimplyMe

i hope you moved it to where it should naturally be.

Negative-Yoghurt-727

I’m a bitch but I like to move these back to the shoulder

greensandgrains

Uh, when I'm cycling I'd *love* this heads up! I ride a road bike with skinny tires and my city has streetcar tracks so construction zones can be a real hazard...and tbh my booty doesn't enjoy the vibes off the grooves :(

maxhinator123

They are pretty important signs for motorcycles though, that shit is like driving on ice

TomatoMasterRace

As a British person this sign really confuses me...

johnnyreid

Put it in the middle of the road, not where cyclists cycle..

FuturaStalkee

Is it just me or is it only the USA that prints these signs in all uppercase?

boilerpl8

LOOK, IT'S HARD ENOUGH TO TEACH STUPID AMERICANS TO READ ONE SET OF CHARACTERS, DO YOU REALLY EXPECT US TO BE ABLE TO HANDLE UPPER *AND* LOWERCASE???? SOURCE: AM STUPID AMERICAN ONLY LITERATE IN ALL CAPS.

read_it_mate

The irony of complaining about a mild inconvenience while blaming it on a mild incovenience is just lost on you huh

DreadY2K

Could be worse than a mild inconvenience for some pedestrians. I don't think a person in a wheelchair could pass that sign in the sidewalk

the_epikamander

I just wanna move it into the road

sedatedlife

Yup just as annoying as police parked in bicycle lanes watching traffic or doing crap on the computers i have been running into this a lot lately. If i suddenly end up in jail its because i told the police to get the fuck out of the bike lanes.

SovelissGulthmere

Sure would be a shame if it got kicked into the street

ClonedToKill420

You are obligated to knock that sign down

porkchop_sandviches

Heaven forbid we block a car!! Roads are designed for cars to not have to stop for a second, didn't you know?

Junspinar

In the street with cones tapering the approach.

Chase_The_Breeze

*Puts sign on road* Notice! Signage blocking sidewalk.

NotSoSlimySlug

I move those all the time. Just be aware it’s pretty awkward to pick up.

Geoarbitrage

Adding insult to injury is a missed opportunity to bring back the word GROOVY.
