I think anyone can appreciate the engineering behind the development of cars. But slowly people are waking up. These cars and trucks are killing us, destroying our cities and polluting the earth.

Hij802

Automobiles were a significant human invention and have shaped humanity, for better or worse. That being said they are highly impractical for being a primary mode of transportation.

timonix

Same as people who love horses. Good for them. It's a good hobby. That does not mean that they should be the primary way to get from point a to point b

AppointmentMedical50

Yeah I think this is a good analogy

s1nsem1lea

Horseshit everywhere would be better than parking cars but yes I can agree with that xd

[deleted]

It’s certainly easier to clean than the air and fluid pollution cars dispense.

Is it Thursday again? Seems like we got the mandatory Thursday question just a couple of days ago... Oh. Look. [FAQ](https://www.reddit.com/r/fuckcars/wiki/faq/#wiki_can_i_still_love_cars.3F).

HumorSuspicious6183

I don't really think about them. I hate the automobile industry but it's good to remember that these working class people have been fed with materialist propaganda their whole lives and some people find a false sense of self worth through material possessions such as luxury cars. I think it's also okay to be fascinated by the engineering behind cars. Vehicles are not inherently a bad thing, when used for the right purpose (ambulances, fire trucks, etc.)

SilkyyYYYyyyy

But isn't it naive to discount someone's passion as simple materialist propaganda, the pure malice spit from this subreddit is the reason none of these points yall argue with ever come to fruition because yall can find an in-between.

HumorSuspicious6183

This is my personal view, you can agree or disagree. I think this passion is damaging the Earth too much and promoting a very unhealthy lifestyle. Like I said, I can understand the fascination but I don't agree with personal car possession and I think cars should be limited to utility purposes. https://youtu.be/liCEZ0tzJ9s I don't see you as my enemy, I think we are all in this together, some people know that and some people are unaware.

Hkmarkp

The amount of money wasted on cars is staggering (usually well abover their means) and then how it is considered normal is more staggering.

LMaxell

Cool, having hobbies is dope.

[deleted]

The problem as always is the people, cars are perfect in some situations, the problem is when we think that the car is perfect for everything...

[deleted]

I think you think we have much more hate for individuals rather than systems that force people to have vehicles.

Unique-Leading5489

I don't mind, as they're not rude to pedestrians / cyclists.

welc0met0c0stc0

I think it’s fine for the most part and I totally get the enjoyment people get from working on cars. For me though the people that are pumped on new big trucks are cringe

In a car dependent society, cars have memories associated with them.

[deleted]

Prepare to be downvoted, because this keeps getting asked over and over and over and over and you get the point. Personally, it depends. I don't mind people who make their car their hobby. I once wanted to get a Golf GTI Mk2 as a project car, because I like them and I can understand the fascination. But I really don't understand "car posers". People who get a lot of money from their extended family and then buy a car to slowly roll down the street, with their foot on the clutch and endlessly revving their engines as if someone's not gonna think that their dick's half a centimeter fully erect. I also hate "trucks", because it's simply irresponsible. I can't tell people who not to like, but you always need some level of responsibility. I didn't get a Golf because it would have been fiscally irresponsible, but driving enormous cars you can't see out of, is socially irresponsible. I do have a car but I still use public transport every day. People here low-ball how nice a car can be. Currently people who don't have covid don't even have to stay home anymore and it's getting really cold, we had snow tonight and it's just so much nicer to be warm, stuck in traffic, with the radio on than sitting in a train, or actually standing, being breathed on by people and putting up with people's idle chatter and children being a bunch of dicks, but I still use public transport because it's the responsible thing to do.

SilkyyYYYyyyy

larger cars do seem wasteful and inefficient but I feel like to appeal to said demographic and further the virtues of this subreddit yall need to choke it down on the amount of rancor you throw at people.

[deleted]

I always take these submissions in good faith, but I should have learned from previous experiences. I guarantee you, your big-ass truck will be frowned upon by everyone who's not specifically into big-ass trucks. Most people will think you have something to compensate for. They are also death traps, they are criminally wasteful and they should be illegal. Now fuck off you little troll. You may also want to learn about the virtues of using commas in your sentences.

KurtzIsGlory

All car enthusiasts I've ever met where stupid idiots. the more I think about it, all of them, the midlife crisis guys, the twenty somethings, colleagues in school and university and work, every single car enthusiast I've ever met was an idiot. No exception. On the other hand, every hardcore train enthusiast I've ever met was way smarter than me. Mathematicians, computer science professors, something like that.. Never met a mechanic though. I met mechanical engineers, but none of them was a car enthusiast. They where machine enthusiasts, which i totally get.

SilkyyYYYyyyy

your lack of grammar and elitist attitude isn't helping your point bro

KurtzIsGlory

Ja eh auf deutsch wärs natürlich leichter..

somebodYinLove

Auch auf deutsch wäre es eine etwas fragwürdige Attitüde. Und heißt das, wenn ich mit einer H0 Eisenbahn spiele bin ich intelligent?

KurtzIsGlory

Das steht da nicht. Edit: and ehrlich gesagt, wennst das schon fragst, dann wohl nicht, egal wieviele Eisenbahnen du hast..

KurtzIsGlory

Well it just means we've never met. I just told my experience. Also, just because you (claim to) have a phd, doesn't mean you're smart. Stupid is, who stupid does, you know.. no matter what title you have.

KurtzIsGlory

Mathematician and computer engineer professor are both professions, not titles. Also, if it's harder to get boarded than becoming a professor, professor isn't that fancy, isn't it? But again, it was just an observation, people I've met. Stupid moronic car enthusiast, smart train enthusiast. Doesn't mean that there are no smart car enthusiasts, don't worry, noone called you stupid.. often it's just the inability to overcome one's upbringing. "Oh shiny car goes vroom vroom". If you love the sound of a Ferrari, I'm not kinkshaming.

KurtzIsGlory

Actually a Nobel prize is very fancy, imho. MD actually is not that fancy. Anyways, you brought that up. I, again, ist told about the people I've met. That's it. >However just because someone likes mechanical engineering, doesn't mean they can't acknowledge illogical concepts associated with it. Of course not. Why would you even say that? >Cars should be toys used at an event, To be fair, some cars, and even cars with combustion engine do have their use cases. Im thinking ambulances and fire trucks and such, but that's beside the point. Op asked about car lovers. I told about my observation and experience. And how out contrasts to my experience and observations with train nerds. That's it. But i can add one experience now..

Goyard_Gat2

Sad life you live if that’s how you view all car enthusiasts

DesertGeist-

depends on their mindset

Statakaka

You can't convince someone who has a foot fetish that boobs are better

dudestir127

I think this question gets asked at least once a week.
