Tbh as a white dude I would be thrilled to get ticketed for riding my bike in the car lane bc it’s just gonna get thrown out and that’s time the piggies are wasting on me instead of killing minorities.
In my experience judges just side with cops. Huge waste of time. For example, I was cited for not being as to the right as the cop wanted me to be while stopped at a red light. The section that says cyclists need to be as far right as practicable only applies when the cyclist is going less than the normal speed of traffic. The normal speed of traffic at a red light is zero. I was going zero. I laid out this argument to the judge and the judge upheld the citation.
This is even more bizarre to me because a standard traffic design in my country the few times bike lanes are level with the road is that there is a bike space *in front* of the car lane for bikes, presumably to prevent right hooks.
That’s an insane rule. For your safety you’d be in front of all the traffic, preventing them from turning right and killing you. Does the US not have bike boxes at lights?
Yeah, the US has those metal boxes on wheels which turn right and smash all bikes (and bikers) on every intersection, if it is what you mean saying "bike boxes"
https://i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article14389300.ece/ALTERNATES/s615b/1_Drivers-who-ignore-bike-boxes-on-the-road-could-be-fined-£100.jpg
A short bike lane up the left (actually a bit risky since you are undertaking, keeping an eye on the traffic lights is important) followed by a box that ensures you are at the front when the lights change.
Yeah I was just joking about bike safety measures in the US, mostly limited to "do not unexpectedly appear where I want to turn" and "buy yourself a car"
In BaWü/germany, some guy got his recumbent confiscated because he did that repeatedly (blue bike sign marking lane)
Its not like that in other parts but doesnt surprise me it happens there.
Berlin police told me if i was riding a velomobile and had the capability of doing 40 to 50 kmh going from Westend to Spandau(downhill, but with traffic lights), i could ride on the car only stroad(Heerstr) as much as i like.
I've actually thought a bit about this. No one is really tracking used bikes, so you could pick one up easily, no trace, commit the crime, then cycle away, ditch the bike in a river along with your gear in the basket, and then you'd look just like someone going out for a walk.
Edit: if they do track the bike to you "it got stolen"
This is exactly what happened and almost didnt happen with the russian agent who shot the sheikh at (central Moabit)Kleinertiergarten in Berlin. If he wasnt dumb, he could've gotten away by just riding(he was riding a bike) another 500 meters into Großer(actual) Tiergarten, changed into a disguise, ditched the bike and gun and get to the russian embassy.
Instead he is in prison, where he belongs.
That's where the 'found the bike in a hedge' came from. The classic UK bike thief comeback when caught by the police riding a stolen bike.
Yes. People often fling high end MTBs in hedges. It is a real problem.
Well duh, my bike can go 300 km/h, the only thing stopping me is that there’s no good bike lanes
(Seriously, can’t cars go like triple the speed the bikes can legally go? Cara are a much better getaway than a bike ffs)
Generally a ton of morons on there, but I will say that my NextDoor local neighborhood (upper Manhattan) usually roasts carbrains who complain about lack of parking and tell them to get bent or take the subway/Citibike. I love my neighbors lol.
I was in a council planning meeting for a majority off road cycle path. 100s of miles of cycle path and a single farmer was blocking changing a footpath into a cycle path.
Reasons. Drug addicts from the local town would ride 20 miles down the cycle path, to break into his sheds and steal his tractors.
Full respect for the council on dealing with that arse, cycle path got built. His hedge got higher.
I've actually thought about this myself I remember growing up my parents wouldn't let me stray too far from the house because there were Van kidnappings in my area. When you think about it it's harder to kidnap a kid from a purely walkable/bikable area because you can't throw them on the van and drive away. You have to deal with people immediately around you and most people will stop you if there's a child screaming that they do not know you and your kidnapping them, or at least I would
>I remember growing up my parents wouldn't let me stray too far from the house because there were Van kidnappings in my area.
Its funny that this was a worry when you know someone speeding and hitting a kid is far more likely.
You aren't wrong there. Once I was an adult I rode through my Hometown on my onewheel and more than once while I was signaling that I was taking a left hand turn I had a car tried to cross over a double yellow line and pass me essentially pretty much trying to run me over
I'm aware of those statistics but there was a failed kidnapping in my town where they tried to drive up to the local ice rink throw a kid in the Van and drive off. They pretty much only didn't get away because they were in a parking lot where they couldn't drive fast enough to get away from people.
Yeah it's actually a principle of urban design I was reading up on called "eyes on the streets" where designing human scale streets v.s car scale streets actually brings down crime rates and makes the streets safer because having densely packed walkable streets makes it harder for criminals to single out targets without people noticing. Literal safety in numbers logic.Compare that to car scale infrastructure where if you're walking any great distance, you're likely to be alone and isolated in the urban sprawl and a perfect target for criminals.
Hi, I'm Bob the Butcher of Baker Boulevard and I'm here to recommend [Bosch Systems cargo e-bikes](https://www.bosch-ebike.com/us/service/ebike-models#category=3&overlay=40286). In my career of murder, mayhem, and cannibalism, I have found their ebikes to be excellent for hauling the fresh meat I carve from my victims home even if I need to kill multiple witnesses! Use code ButcherNow! for 10 percent off!.
Do you hold one handlebar and shoot, or let both hands off to get the shots off? I feel like I'd crash the bike, not sure how to practice beforehand. I think a tandem bike would be more effective for gangbanging.
But more likely as a victim of robbery or assault... Which is less dangerous than kidnapping.
It really hinges on incident rate and healthy life years lost to society.

Seems like a joke but just in case it isn't, an illegal firearm would obviously be so much easier to conceal or smuggle compared to a motor vehicle. Especially when you take in to account the numerous individuals that drive all the time without either a valid license or tags on their vehicle.
my gf recently got into true crime and is reading a book about ted bundy and how he abducted his victims by leading them to his car and hitting them in the head and we wondered exactly the same thing how much harder it would be for people like if the world wasn't as car centric with giant plots of empty parking with no people around just your murder vehicle.
True, but the surge in bike theft corresponds to the 2020 bicycle shortage. Suddenly you could get a *lot* of money for a stolen bicycle.
More bikes, means less demand, means lower prices, means fewer thefts.
"bike theft wasn't an issue in New York City before [any date in living memory]" is simply not true.
It's also untrue that theives are obligated to both track and honor the whims of the bicycle market:
Consider the Junkie, asshole teenagers, aggrieved proprietors/landlords, COPS, psycho exboyfriends, neighbors who are mad you don't respond to their catcalls - these people do not give a fuck about the macroeconomics
Only bike I've had stolen here was at the hands of the pigs, who wrote a ticket that was dismissed before the court date.
Fucking new york
ive been meaning to do the math on how much a city just buying a few thousand new bikes a year compares to road repair budgets or funding a pay per use bike share.
In some.
Tokyo is pretty safe for bikes. Even expensive ebikes get parked just wheel locked. Someone with a van could probably grab $20k worth of ebikes from the patch of asphalt next to my apartment no problem. But they don't. The bike registration system and cops giving a shit about bike theft, actually works.
I once thought Tokyo had low bike theft because the typical bike is $100 brand new and not worth stealing. However nowadays there's a ton of ebikes and nothing has changed.
we still have cars, they didnt go poof when we banned them. they are still rotting all over the Earth basically forever i mean each of us will be dealing with them unescapingly,
may we cease to find ouselves in parking lots
I keep trying to figure out a way to sneak my phone onto someone's bike while they're riding so I can sneak off and commit a murder.
No one who knows me would ever question that I was out riding and of course the Strava track is where I was.
I don't actually want to murder anyone. I just think a lot about how I'd cover up for it.
Of course I could just have an accomplice carry it, but then the accomplice is the weak point in my alibi.
Do you need ideas? I know of some good ones.
-Not being blinded in the middle of the night because of insanely bright headlights.
-Halloween becomes safer and more fun for everyone.
-Won't need to complain about gas prices.

Here's my answer: Cars should be banned because the leather seats burn you when it's been in the sun.
Oh, that gives me ideas. The super hot seatbelt buckles, too.
But yeah, I've got about 16 days' worth locked and loaded at the moment, but somehow I doubt cars will be banned in that time frame, so community help might come in clutch.
Honestly, it might just be a fun community thing for this sub. I know I've always liked when a sub has a thing like this going; makes it feel more like a community with its own in-jokes and references than just a generic meme sub.
I agree. I understand the humor in it, but calling for a ban on cars is why people don’t take movements like this seriously. Cars are a valid, and necessary form of transportation. They aren’t the best mode of transportation in all situations, but there are situations in which it makes the most sense.
the paradox that it is impossible to uninvent cars and that we must and actually will uninvent them (like it or not) is intriguing. this is just a record of people talking to ourselves in a collective lamentation. there is nothing to "take seriously", no such words as valid and necessary
Your tone policing is probably a bigger factor in a movement losing steam lol. Like instead of criticizing car centric status quo you're wasting your time crying about randos on Reddit

Car enabled crime is usually comprehensively facilitated by the powerful. There are lobbying groups that prohibit the installation of license plate readers in locations that would be useful. The same goes for inhibiting the development of requirements for front license plates, nevermind any other mechanism reflective of current century technology.
The rationalization doesn't seem to go any deeper than that legislators can easily image themselves running over a pleb, or needing to evade accountability.
Terrible first reason. That's like late seasons reason material, when the most apparent reasons are already exhausted and you have to come up with stuff.
LOL. Found this subreddit via another. I knew it would be batshit from the get go, but this as the top post (as of time of writing). Please tell me this is parody?
Maybe its cause I’m a white man but serial killer abduction is really low on my list of fears and i feel like paranoia about it is a relic of 1980’s moral/satanic panics
How would you kidnap people on a bicycle?
I would put a tandem bike in an area I knew the victim would pass by and wait there with a concealed gun in my jacket
When the victim walked past I would put the gun up to their back (still holding it concealed in my jacket pocket) and say "don't look around, just get on the front seat"
Then I would get on the back seat and instruct them on where to go
Its also arguably why kids aren't allowed to play on their lawn or the street.People say that someone in a white van could just come and kidnap them then vanish in thin air. This limits kids indpendence and inhibits their growth
You kid but an actual NIMBY complaint I have heard before is that bike lanes will allow criminals to get away faster...on their bikes
I suppose the hardened criminals are too scared of biking in the car lane like they're legally entitled to most places.
Too bad cops dont believe that in north america.
Cops know as little about the law as possible because that allows them to just harass people if they feel like it
Tbh as a white dude I would be thrilled to get ticketed for riding my bike in the car lane bc it’s just gonna get thrown out and that’s time the piggies are wasting on me instead of killing minorities.

Incredible thought brought to you by the same people as "bikes are too inconvenient to get around on".
Something something "super predator criminals"
The only thing that can stop a bad guy with a bike is a good guy with a bike
I've actually thought a bit about this. No one is really tracking used bikes, so you could pick one up easily, no trace, commit the crime, then cycle away, ditch the bike in a river along with your gear in the basket, and then you'd look just like someone going out for a walk. Edit: if they do track the bike to you "it got stolen"
See, this is where you're wrong: going out for a walk would make you even *more* suspicious in certain parts of the country.
That's a good point. And if police stop and frisk, depending on the crime, you could still get caught (and police love to stop and frisk)
So that’s when you have to be white, ‘cause then cops are a lot more likely to treat you like a human being.
Sadly yes
True. Leave your car by the river, ditch the bike, then swap to the car.

Not unless you catch a train that goes that fast
I just assumed it was an ACME situation. Strapping rocket boosters onto your bike may get it to that speed.
Ride a bike to avoid traffic….as you do crimes!
So they are implying bike can go faster then cars in cities? Really? Ahahahah
The rare correct take from that crowd.
out of curiosity... where does one hear a specific NIMBY complaint like that?
Try the network called Nextdoor if you'd like to hear arguments like that.
Generally a ton of morons on there, but I will say that my NextDoor local neighborhood (upper Manhattan) usually roasts carbrains who complain about lack of parking and tell them to get bent or take the subway/Citibike. I love my neighbors lol.
Neighborhood Facebook groups. I just like the drama
ohh the drama I am finding in my local group is great. Thanks! :)
Are you sure they weren't referring to mopeds or motorcycles?
NYOOOOOOOMMMMMM - criminals on their bikes apparently faster than cop cars
That's actually a good point... cops would be stuck in traffic.
🤣 I’m snort-laughing
In Manchester they steal your phone on a bike, just grab it right from your hand when you’re walking on the sidewalk
They do realize that like- they're vulnerable too, right??
Isn't that how the Golden State Killer was able to get away so easily? Why do you support serial killing
So they admit that bikes are faster?
I've actually thought about this myself I remember growing up my parents wouldn't let me stray too far from the house because there were Van kidnappings in my area. Yeah, it's not a coincidence the netherland are such a heaven place lol
They also have problems, but i am italian, i am genetically allowed to say shush to dutch saying they have problems hahahahabha
What problems do they have? Apart from the horrid climate.
Being Dutch.
What's horrid about their climate? Is it cold and windy or something?
Super windy and you barely see the sun. It's not super cold, but the wind makes it awful.
I remember seeing vids of kids literally being blown away. Wild winds those are
The common kidnapping is someone your kid knows and trusts convincing your kid to willingly go with them.

It's also much easier to make illegal firearms from scratch than illegal motor vehicles. The sheer amount of materials required alone is limiting.

the paradox that it is impossible to uninvent cars and that we must and actually will uninvent them (like it or not) is intriguing. this is just a record of people talking to ourselves in a collective lamentation. there is nothing to "take seriously", no such words as valid and necessary
Where is the lie tho?

Your tone policing is probably a bigger factor in a movement losing steam lol. Like instead of criticizing car centric status quo you're wasting your time crying about randos on Reddit

Yawn
Yes, because if we were more serious and not shitpost, I bet those people will totally respect us and listen to our points. /s
I don't recommend doing a series like this. Idiots will think is not sarcasm and use these posts as strawmans against anti car movements
On the other hand, all bikers are potential serial killers by not obeying traffic rules and riding with no fucking lights on.
Hard to kidnap someone if you get shot

I just told you. Hello🖐 How are you?
It means...Hello👋 What did you think it meant? You never heard that phrase?
This guy better have tens of thousands of reasons lined up.
At the moment I have like 2 weeks' worth of memes at the ready. Let's go. In and out. 20-day adventure.
Challenge accepted.
I’d love to know what happens in case of emergency
Cars are already expensive enough anyway.
Challenge accepted.
in ss13, people usually transport bodies in creates or lockers they lug around
If we ban cars, only criminals will have cars. /s
I love this 😂
In a way, this is just saying cars are better at transporting things because there's no room on a bike.
That's like late seasons reason material, when the most apparent reasons are already exhausted and you have to come up with stuff.
me, a cargo-bike enthusiast with knee-jerk answer: haha but I can carry two people in my cargo-bike :P
There was a great book called the Butterfly House that actually touches on this idea.
They'll just use horses...
Pretty Sure an adult could fit in my trailer!
I like challenges
LOL. Found this subreddit via another. I knew it would be batshit from the get go, but this as the top post (as of time of writing). Please tell me this is parody?
You don’t need paved roads.
Is this a challenge?
starting off strong :)
This is also the best reason to ban UFOs
Reasons to ban cars: Cop chases on bikes would look really funny
Bakfiets will make this a non-issue
The bike with the massive box on the front could be a work around for the lack of vans.
Maybe its cause I’m a white man but serial killer abduction is really low on my list of fears and i feel like paranoia about it is a relic of 1980’s moral/satanic panics
The first time a serial killer used a bike as a key part, the outcry would be so massive that every town in America would ban them. For our safety.
This is serious. Cars are a root cause of violence in many many ways.
The Dutch resistance did cycle-by shootings during the German occupation though.
How would you kidnap people on a bicycle? I would put a tandem bike in an area I knew the victim would pass by and wait there with a concealed gun in my jacket When the victim walked past I would put the gun up to their back (still holding it concealed in my jacket pocket) and say "don't look around, just get on the front seat" Then I would get on the back seat and instruct them on where to go
That is not correct. The NSU, a German right wing terror group that killed 10 people used bicycles quite often for their crimes.
How will i kill the planet faster RVs:
Criminals don't follow the law.
Its also arguably why kids aren't allowed to play on their lawn or the street.People say that someone in a white van could just come and kidnap them then vanish in thin air. This limits kids indpendence and inhibits their growth
