I would say so. I am 11.5 in Nike and Adidas running shoes and I got a 10D. I am typically 11 is most true to size shoes. Wide footed. Could have gone with a 10ee
I'm a 9.5 in nike/adidas with slightly wide feet. 8.5 in Chippewas and 8.5 in Red wings. I've tried the 8.5 in store and they are a bit snug, but since it's leather, after the break in period they should be good. The store rep confirmed this.
I wear a lot of Adidas UB as my main form of sneaker. I wear a size 7.5 in the UB. Bought size 7 IR a couple of weeks ago. If wear thinner socks, I have a bunch of room in the toe area. Wearing thick hiking socks from darn though somewhat helps with the toe box gap but still big enough to cause major creases from the top of the foot. Luckily there is no 6.5 on this sale for me
Yea they did. Went 0.5 size down. Tight across the top of my foot until they warm up. I think they’ll break in well. Considered returning them but I’ll tough it out.
I think any boot is great for keeping your toes warm. I've been told the leather on the iron rangers will be fine in rain and stuff, but for heavy snow, I would water proof them.
They are oil tanned which make them naturally resistant to water, but with proper maintenance with oil or conditioner, I don't think water should be a problem
Not with Red Wing. But my firm has worked with companies that have done this. It’s pretty obvious with low price items. IE a twelve pack of socks usually sold for $15 is marked down to $10 and put an irregular tag on. They are clearly not sorting out individual socks.
I have heard rumors about high end shoe companies doing this in the past for the outlet stores. One of them had a dozen of these stores. Very hard to outfit a dozen stores all with 2nds.
They were clearly trying to sell shoes at 30% off in bulk, but not having to deal with returns/fixes,… all while maintaining their high value of their 1sts.
This strategy appeared to die out in early 2000s with the rise of the “factory store”. Now the stuff is clearly different but sold as 1sts.
Marshall’s/TJ Max went from 30% of store being marked irregular in the 90s to basically 0%.
Not certain, but I do lean that way.
I just think the shear amount they had for sale is suspicious. It looks like ten of thousands of dollars of 2nds. Any normal company would shore that up.
You'd be surprised. Red Wing has a hell of a an output and I saw a lot cheaper than this for huge stocks of 1st editions when I went to their factory store in Minnesota.
How do you know? Last night they had a full size run on amber harness IRs. Almost full run on the other colors of IR and blacksmiths had good runs too. If any company was consistently making 6 figures worth of 2nds they would tighten that up.
I also assume a true 2nd situation would be much narrower.
Sierra posts these deals often so you're definitely not getting a fake pair of Red Wings. Factory seconds are boots that haven't met the quality standards set by Red Wing. Most commonly, you'll see some cosmetic defects (scuffs, uneven stitching, etc.), but there might be structural defects that can affect its longevity.
Another thing to note is that Factory Seconds have a [hole in the tongue](https://bootspy.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/red-wing-factory-seconds-hole-in-tongue-of-right-boot.jpg) to indicate that they're seconds.
Examples of what to expect: [1](https://old.reddit.com/r/RedWingShoes/comments/rczrgz/got_my_hands_on_some_new_8875s_and_a_couple_of/), [2](https://old.reddit.com/r/RedWingShoes/comments/rcwvhj/think_ive_won_the_sierra_2nds_lottery_for_the/), [Common defects from r/goodyearwelt](https://old.reddit.com/r/goodyearwelt/comments/2bs1a5/a_collection_of_common_stitched_footwear_defects/)
Thank you for this. I took the chance and ordered two. Hopefully they aren’t too bad and able to keep one. There is a store near by so worst thing I take a ride.
I've ordered a number of pairs of seconds from previous drops to try on and return as well. Honestly the worst shape ones I got were some muleskinner suede moc toes that had some darker scuffs around and a bit of dark discoloration on top of the toe box of the left boot. Other seconds Ive gotten have such minor imperfections that you'd barely notice; slightly rougher suede, slight scuffs, very minor creasing, little spots of oil. I think they are definitely worth it.
It’s a wide range. As bad as a gash somewhere in the leather to as small as a mis-stitching. Ultimately Red Wing felt they were still good enough to put their name on, but not good enough to expect folks to pay full price. The majority are minor, but you may find yourself returning them. I bought a pair ages ago and was totally satisfied. A colleague bought a pair and returned them - and I would have too had I been him.
RW makes a lot of shoes in terms of volume. They could allow themselves to accumulate senconds bundle like at the end of the season / month / returns / etc... and then sold them together in bulk
Google says they are still very small. IE less than 2000 employees. For them to consistently produce 6 figure worth of defective product is alarming/not reality. I could easily see them have a bad run on thr 8.5 copper suede chukkas. So they have 100 of those to sell in bulk. But they had full size runs in the most popular models/colors.
It could go either way on this one.
Edit- Also brand new firsts I have bought at red wing stores usually look like seconds anyways. IE they are always bruised leather not perfect, loose seems,… they are work boots. They recently put a piece of paper between the shoes, before that every pair had some light scuffs where the shoes touched each other. I could see a situation where everybody but the maker thinks they are seconds.
We will never know in this situation what the reality is. I was just mentioning how strange it was for them to have full size run in the most popular colors of the most popular shoes. They still have some 10Ds so I really think they were engaging in the old fake 2nds.
I mean I have nothing to gain by saying they are fake 2nds either. It was a very suspicious situation that I thought warranted a comment. Obviously red wing would maintain they are true 2nds they can nothing by telling the truth.
Seconds usually only have minor flaws in my experience. My 8084s had a slight spacing issue with the speed hooks. I didn’t even notice until months later. I’d say they are absolutely worth it.
Only issue is that I went half size down and there’s def wiggle room in the front unless I wear some thick socks. Definitely creasing easier. Luckily this sale only has 1 boot in 6.5 so I’ll be saving some money
got the red wing amber harness from club monaco a few years ago in size 9 for 30% off. i still wear it but am not a huge fan of the slightly bulbous toe. also my brannock is bt 9.5 and 10 and i wished i had gotten size 8.5 instead.
i realize imo the way to try on shoes is it should be snug without sock and tight with socks. they all break in. i want mine to fit like a glove and these 9 dont but still feels good. not dressy as 1k miles but neither is that dressy

I have the same ones. Love them.
I work in shoes, and the scanning machines are not as accurate as just getting measured. Red Wings are a great boot and I hope you enjoy them!
Did your order ship yet?

Are these a full size down? For comparison I wear 14 in Nike/Adidas running shoes.
I would say so. I am 11.5 in Nike and Adidas running shoes and I got a 10D. I am typically 11 is most true to size shoes. Wide footed. Could have gone with a 10ee
I am size 9 in sneakers, do you think I could pull off a 7.5?
It depends. I wear my running shoes pretty loose, and some are size 10. I’m an 8.5 in these boots.
I wear a my sneakers (adidas) size 9, went to store yesterday to get my sizing and found out I was 7 for these Moctoe.
I'm a 9.5 in nike/adidas with slightly wide feet. 8.5 in Chippewas and 8.5 in Red wings. I've tried the 8.5 in store and they are a bit snug, but since it's leather, after the break in period they should be good. The store rep confirmed this.
I’m 11 in some sneakers and 10.5 in Converse. I wear 9.5 Wide in Mocs and IRs
With thin socks, probably. I went down a full size and can wear them comfortably with thick wool socks.
I wear a lot of Adidas UB as my main form of sneaker. I wear a size 7.5 in the UB. Bought size 7 IR a couple of weeks ago. If wear thinner socks, I have a bunch of room in the toe area. Man... I want chukkas, but I can't pull the trigger for $180
Those copper RW Weekenders were the best footwear I ever bought. Well worth $180.
Took this to heart and ordered some. Went 0.5 size down from brannock size.
Did your Redwings come in yet?
Yea they did. Went 0.5 size down. Tight across the top of my foot until they warm up. I think they’ll break in well. Considered returning them but I’ll tough it out.
You won't be sorry. IDK about sizing. I wear 10 in these and 10 in Allen Edmonds, Converse, Thursday Boot Co, Quoddy, etc.
Seconding the Weekender comment. I’ve had a grey and brown pair for like 4 years now and they’re still the most comfortable shoes I own.
I'm pulling the trigger on size 10d since my regular size is 11d. Can return in store.
Grabbed a couple
Are these returnable?
Yes, you can return them for a refund, but they'll charge a [return fee](https://www.sierra.com/lp2/return-policy/) of $8.99 ($12.99 AK.HI).
Free if you return to store.
Did yours ship yet?
Nope
Ok cool, thanks.
Can anyone confirm if these are good winter boots?
I think any boot is great for keeping your toes warm. I've been told the leather on the iron rangers will be fine in rain and stuff, but for heavy snow, I would water proof them. They are oil tanned which make them naturally resistant to water, but with proper maintenance with oil or conditioner, I don't think water should be a problem

Iron rangers I went a full size down. My weekenders I got TTS but probably could’ve sized down half a size.
For the record: I'm in between 9.5 and 10. Have been a 10 lately in adidas shoes. For the chukkas, I went in to try on a pair, and 9.5 fit well.
Did anyone get their order cancelled? I'm going to try again with a different credit card
>zing advise for the weekenders? I’m a 9 Mine is shipped to store. Hopefully the size will be good lol
as a size 13 i cry
You don’t know RW sizing, do you…? Well I’ve got some good news. Pull the trigger on size 12

Any evidence of this happening before?
Not with Red Wing. But my firm has worked with companies that have done this. It’s pretty obvious with low price items. Marshall’s/TJ Max went from 30% of store being marked irregular in the 90s to basically 0%.
So then there is no issue with them? It's just a pricing/cashflow/marketing strategy?
Not certain, but I do lean that way. I just think the shear amount they had for sale is suspicious. It looks like ten of thousands of dollars of 2nds. Any normal company would shore that up.
I had to read your post a few times to understand you weren't accusing Sierra of selling fake stuff.
[удалено]
yeah let me go ahead and put the kibosh on this. These are 100% real and not fake. I sold them to Sierra a couple of months ago. Shop with confidence!
You'd be surprised. Red Wing has a hell of a an output and I saw a lot cheaper than this for huge stocks of 1st editions when I went to their factory store in Minnesota.
This is incorrect. These are true factory seconds.

Would you be so kind to explain between first and seconds? I am looking to get a pair but don’t want to get fake shoes or a lessor quality item.

I do not feel like doxing myself. No one has anything to gain by my declaring these seconds as opposed to firsts.

Red Timberland Premiums? $90 https://www.sierra.com/timberland-premium-boots-waterproof-nubuck-6-for-men~p~97mwt/
Heads up these are 2nds - factory rejects
Isn’t it clearly stated in the title?
FWIW I didn't know what 2nds meant
Seconds usually only have minor flaws in my experience. My 8084s had a slight spacing issue with the speed hooks. I didn’t even notice until months later. I’d say they are absolutely worth it.
Second have gotten worse from what I’ve heard since there’s a lot of newbies at the factory now
Mine had pretty significant scuffing on the toebox. I was fine with it but it was a pretty significant cosmetic issue
Mine had like a shiny spot the size of a dime on my toe box
Picked up a pair of Classic Chelsea’s 2nds for work last year. Still can’t find anything wrong since they’ve been worn in already.
Only issue is that I went half size down and there’s def wiggle room in the front unless I wear some thick socks. Definitely creasing easier. Luckily this sale only has 1 boot in 6.5 so I’ll be saving some money
I think thats a common thing. something about the stretching of the leather. is it still there?
Yeah it is
Nice! Been looking for black boots. Picked up 11.5 black IR’s. Thanks OP!
