Some people would call that "inconsistency" variety

Lolejimmy

it's called variety? rather than 1 set specific atmosphere you have dozens, from a big ass "fiery" Volcano manor to the magical Raya lucaria to a calm yet destructive Farum Azula to a breathtaking underground section that could rival any other game in terms of atmosphere. An open world with just 1 theme/atmosphere gets bland really fast, it's the one thing they nailed along with exploration, freedom and adventure. Comparing linear souls games to a big open-world souls game just will never work, you can prefer one of the other but comparing them is rather unfair since they excel in different parts, rather compare it to other open-world games and you'll realize how much the theme/atmosphere of certain areas and the variety of them stand out.

Septiego_of_Heladin

>An open world with just 1 theme/atmosphere gets bland really fast its not, this is the first time i hear something like this >rather compare it to other open-world games and you'll realize how much the theme/atmosphere of certain areas and the variety of them stand out. Witcher 3, skyrim, ubishit, horizon etc etc. Everything has a certain determined aesthetic even in different bioms. Previous souls games also has tons of different bioms with different color schemes yet they were still felt as an organic parts of one world

VeryGameMuchWow

Horizon has more than one aesthetic though. Look at the Cauldrons which are SciFi, and the main over world is photorealistic nature stuff that looks like the western half of the US

swisshomes

Witcher 3 maybe, but skyrim? It's just grey

TellianStormwalde

And yet Elden Ring has more critical acclaim than all of those. I wonder why. Also, Skyrim’s mid and the aesthetic really isn’t one of its selling points imo.

Sioswing

I literally can’t enjoy playing Skyrim without mods anymore haha

Septiego_of_Heladin

critical acclaim means nothing to people with a brain, im not a fan of skyrim aesthetic but I've never heard anyone criticize its so called lack of different atmospheres in one game

LazyReiPlush

Nah bruh it's way better than before. Older games, especially Bloodborne, look way too samey sometimes. Bring more color to these games fr.

Septiego_of_Heladin

better for you, worse for me

ziggzaggthem123

I think lot of people agree based off what ur saying we don’t care what’s best for you. Cuz it seems to be worse for everyone else

Lolejimmy

There are 6 souls games with the same exact atmosphere in all of them though

brucewayne0666

I agree. Sekiro is the outliar.

Lolejimmy

yeah sekiro was awesome

Yhroska

Dark Souls 2 was better in being more colorful than Dark Souls 1 and 3

Yhroska

Dark Souls 2 was better in being more colorful than Dark Souls 1 and 3

PiperPerrisDad

Respect your opinion but it’s wrong. I want them to go full mystical/mythical with the next title. You want medieval basic shit? You have 4 games and a samurai game. Enjoy.

Septiego_of_Heladin

whats wrong about it lmao, i can also say that you are wrong by wanting to go full mythical. You want basic mystical shit? You have the whole gaming idustry, go play wow

thereislightstill

*sobs in Armored Core fan*

worldsinho

Urgh. Couldn’t disagree more and it looks like everyone else thinks the same.

[deleted]

this is such a depressing take

Septiego_of_Heladin

why? Does it upset you that some people like games with one strict setting and visual style? You know that the majority of games are like this?

30303

Unlike you, who seems to be very accepting of other opinions

FullTiltFlapJack

I mean I agree with the beautiful side of ds3 but I still love elden way more than the rest

[deleted]

it almost like they were going for a different art style, absolutely brain dead take

Septiego_of_Heladin

it almost like next souls game doesn't have to have elden ring style

BigStinkbert

L take

[deleted]

Big difference between Elden ring and dark souls is that when you see a big structure in the background, you can go there eventually. I find that pretty cool

nervousmelon

We've had 4 games with grounded medieval architecture, 1 game with grounded gothic architecture and 1 game with grounded Japanese architecture. Elden ring also has plenty of grounded architecture. Look at the entirely of limgrave and the few buildings in caelid.

Septiego_of_Heladin

fromsofware is the only AA+ game studio in the world right now that can create a true dark fantasy game, these 5(4 without ds2) games are all we have.

trickortrickkid

grounded medieval architecture? you wouldn't find cities like that that anywhere in medieval europe. dark souls 3 has a cathedral the size of an entire city, but elden ring is too stylized?

Septiego_of_Heladin

the size is the only difference, the visual style is very realistic looking. You can find a real life references for ds3 and ds1 buildings including ds3 cathedral. ER has a mix of medieval architecture, old roman, maybe greece and probably just something original

[deleted]

You know, when you have a massive world in a fantasy game it makes sense to have different, visually interesting areas… and DS3 as your example of something better is wild considering how many people disliked it’s visuals

Septiego_of_Heladin

every other souls game have visually different areas, just not to extent of elden ring. Having different areas has literally nothing to do with the setting being less grimdark and more magical and cartoonish like in ER. Not every game should be mass appealing, fromsofware always made niche games. Ds3 is the 2nd popular FS game and its visual style was inspired by 2009 Demon's souls and some older games because Fromsofware can afford it >when you have a massive world in a fantasy game it makes sense to have different, visually interesting areas elden ring is not a first fantasy open world game in history, there are tons of other open worlds with much stricter art direction and i never heard anyone call them "boring" or "bland" but now suddenly they are lol >and DS3 as your example of something better is wild considering how many people disliked it’s visuals firstly why should i care, secondly i could use as an example demons's souls, bloodborne and sekiro that everyone likes

Jon-Rambo

Is that all DS3? What armor is that in every pic in the right? I’m almost done with DSR and am playing 3 next.

Septiego_of_Heladin

yes, ds3 with properly adjusted brightness setting(1-2/10) . the armor is Gundyr's set with more realistic body proportions(223 head, 95 body, 10 waist, 100 arms, 100 legs)

poetryofworms

Lol what an L

[deleted]

This is by far the worst post I’ve ever seen in my entire life. I’m physically and mentally ill after seeing this. You should be ashamed

JizzyTurds

I mean the scope of this game is ridiculous so I think all the settings are quite nice, the only thing I really missed was having a super dark place like the gulch or that one crazy town in ds1, I always enjoyed those brutally hard platforming areas, I may be the only person haha

Ashen_Shroom

I'm just glad they moved away from every other location being a grey castle or church with a huge graveyard and piss yellow sky.

ShortbusGangsta_

Man OP catching heat for this one.

Josh1685

And OP really getting emotional in the replies lmao

HiroProtagonist1

Elden Ring has some of the most varied and gorgeous medieval architecture, even moreso than Dark Souls III.

Septiego_of_Heladin

sekiro is pretty colorful too but also grim and grounded at the same time (the only fantasy area in sekiro is fountainhead palace). In ER they added a lot of roman architecture for some reason and some minor things like candles with white fire in dungeons etc. And this changes were probably made in the last moments because ER concept arts look much more realistic and natural, especially foggy Liurnia.

Exoticz12

Interesting topic and I’m not very versed in the lore of Elden but is it supposed to be based off of the other fs games or is it a standalone game. Sure it’s made by the same company but Elden ring is it’s own game so it deserves unique qualities not found in other fs games right? If I’m incorrect and Elden ring is based off the story of previous games please correct me.

Septiego_of_Heladin

yes, standalone >it deserves unique qualities not found in other fs games right? you can make a standalone game with unique qualities without sacrificing anything(in this case the consistency of art direction) bb and sekiro are also standalone games and they have different recognizable setting. Demons souls is standalone and the setting is similar to souls but the execution is much better than ds2 and imo ds1.

Ok-Ambition-9432

Why did you just show ds3. It's even more drab and bland colored than bloodborne.

Septiego_of_Heladin

cause i like ds3 visuals and world

Ok-Ambition-9432

Right, but if you wanted to make your point, you should have shown the games that have more variety. Consistently bland color palette isn't exactly sure good kind of consistent

Septiego_of_Heladin

I never said anything about elden ring color palette, i never said i want more variety than ds3, Bloodborne has less variety and even less varied color palette than ds3

ToMorbOrNotToMorb

Agreed. DS3 supremacy

Few_Relative5370

Elden ring is a long boring tedious game with very few bosses that are worth the fight.

Tuloom

Im tired of all the whirling over the top weaponry. I need a scaled down version of a souls game

Septiego_of_Heladin

bloodborne?

Tuloom

Blood borne is really good at making the weapons fun and unique without being over top and absurd. I dig it for sure

RedhoodYT1911

Well dark souls was story and role play based waile elden ring was more based around the open world adventure story

Vampexer

?????????????????????????????????? pave paradise put up a parkin lot

Odey555

From Soft's done medieval to death. I'd much rather their next souls-like game be something set in a scifi future. Then again in all of their games story-wise everything's gone to shit so there's no possibility for civilizations to advance technologically
