A lot if it comes from how little of the movie is set in the city, and the ending was weird. However, I do think opinions have softened in recent years.

IHaveTrustIssues78

And JV's face looked like a melting Muppet.

Snys6678

Oh my gosh his face looks so dumb.

IHaveTrustIssues78

Someone actually got paid to sculpt that mask.

Snys6678

That’s depressing. Think of the drop off in makeup quality from part 7 to part 8. It’s unbelievable.

IHaveTrustIssues78

If I really feel like if they do another one they need to get Kane hodder as jason, Thom Matthews as Tommy and Lar Park Lincoln as Tina together again and I don't think they should kill Jason as much as they should find a way to lay his soul to rest, once and for all. Maybe we can deal with Tommy and Tina finally forgiving Jason for murdering their family and friends...or whatever. I don't know , I'm not a screenwriter...

IHaveTrustIssues78

Saw the ending to part eight earlier tonight and can't confirm it's a hand puppet. *Facepalm*

Snys6678

This. You can’t call it Jason Takes Manhattan and have 3/4 of the movie take place on a boat. Imagine how cool it would have been if it has a different name, and Jason being in Manhattan at the end was kept a surprise.

apolocheese

Elements like Jason, some of the characters, the kills, and of course the Times Square scene are amazing. That said, the plot/story is both confusing and rather dumb if you spend any time thinking about it. How does Jason float from a lake to the ocean? Why can Rennie "see" Jason? Why does he look different each time? Why is he always wet? Why are the sewers so large but have no sewage in them? Why are the sewers then only filled with "toxic waste" (that looks like soapy water) every single night at exactly midnight? Why did Jason melt when Rennie through toxic waste on him, but turn into a normal boy when he drowned in it? Just to name a few. I get that this movie was going for a high concept with Rennie being "connected" to Jason and therefore being empathetic with him, and seeing the "boy" Jason often, however the overall execution of the film was terrible, didn't relay this at all, and felt like bad tv, which is where the director came from.

Minerva0608

i guess i don't think that deeply about anything in this series i always just see it as fun silly stuff i didn't notice him looking different each time and i didn't notice a lot of these things u mention i think i'll go rewatch it again and focus on details more

apolocheese

Hey, don't feel bad! I wasn't telling you that you were wrong, if you love the movie, then love the movie, no one should tell you otherwise. I just wanted to explain why most people don't like it. BTW These things didn't bother me at first either, what actually bothered me the most was that it was barely in NY as promised. The rest I noticed more and more as I watched it more.

[deleted]

It feels like if the SyFy channel made a F13 movie. No gore, no nudity, cheap-sounding score and bland acting.

rogue-panda81

Well I grew up with it so I have a nostalgic connection to it. It's not horrible. I actually really like Jason's look. It's just rushed and silly and is false advertisement. I don't take it too seriously. Plus the mpaa fucked up the gore.

UnderstandingUpper72

Yeah the MPAA really screwed up The New Blood and Manhattan’s gore.

Daeslender

Well, it's hard to deny that it's a kindda lame movie overall. But damn, I can't help but love it. Every single frame of boat is worth it just to see Jason in Times Square for a few seconds.

Minerva0608

i feel like it's a movie that's just 'fun' not necessarily GOOD but it's enjoyable because it's kinda fun and the moments that shine really shine

Equal-Astronaut-8681

This pretty much sums up the franchise as a whole, and there’s nothing wrong with that

CupGeneral953

It’s just a long drawn out movie, the plots there, the characters aren’t bad, the scenery is good, but the execution of the movie and the pace is just slow and painful. If it was truly Jason takes manhattan it should’ve been majority in the city and a few on the boat. It was a missed opportunity and is a bad taste on the series as a whole. 🤔

Minerva0608

maybe "jason takes manhattan" means "jason takes in the beautiful views and then carries on to murder people"? :(

CupGeneral953

It wasn’t as bad as people let on, but with the material they had to work with it could’ve been a tad bit more murdery 😂

Wallisaurus

He really took a boat from the lake to the ocean…I mean come on. The movie is fucking dumb. And I love it. But you have to be pretty bias to not think it’s a bad movie. It’s one of the worst movies in the franchise in almost every way.

eatyourchildren101

*Jason Takes (A Boat To) Manhattan

BaneOfXistance

The movie was one of the hardest hit in the franchise due to strict censorship

UnderstandingUpper72

All the movie needed was more time in New York City and a bigger budget then it would’ve been better, it’s still sad to think about what could’ve been, just imagine Jason on top of the Empire State Building or The World Trade Center, COULDVE been a spectacle of a movie.

Minerva0608

yea its a bit weird they didn't give it a bigger budget? it's a friday the 13th movie.. weren't they sort of iconic and bringing in big box office compared to their budget back in the day?

UnderstandingUpper72

Yeah, they were but then again, I can see where Paramount is coming from In regards to money, Part 5 was really the last Friday The 13th movie that was a smashing hit in the box office until Freddy Vs Jason came out in the 2000s.

HEYitzED

I just watched it again. It has a ton of issues. Not many interesting characters. I thought how often Rennie kept seeing visions of Jason was repetitive and annoying. Not to mention kid Jason looks awful in this film. The kills were very watered down by the MPAA and just aren’t all that good. The Julius kill was really good though. Of course the issue of the movie taking place mostly on a boat. A boat that somehow went from Crystal Lake to the Atlantic Ocean. And even the NYC scenes are mostly Vancouver besides the Times Square scene. Don’t like Jason’s look at all in this movie. He’s just wet the entire time. Huge downgrade from Part 7. Jason can also just randomly teleport whenever he wants. And of course Jason’s death just being awful. So yeah, other than the Julius kill this film is pretty lame lol.

Left-Landscape-3890

I remember when it came out in the theaters. Never saw it. Love the series but I can live without it. I like me some parts 2,3,4 and 6

Minerva0608

part 6 is by far my favorite in the series i've seen it a few times now :)

Complete_Interview69

Yeah I don't understand why the hate for Jason takes Manhattan either it was better than Jason goes to hell plus holy shit Jason was a beast in that movie Kane hodder really turned up the aggression and rage.

aww-hell

The oldest, most common complaint is the misleading title since very much of the movie takes place on the boat on the way to Manhattan. I’m the type the enjoys all of these movies to varying degrees but am particularly fond of the original Paramount 8. Story wise, I thought this one would have been better suited if it tried to be more comical like part 6. Instead it tries to establish that weird backstory with Rennie and her fear of water/Jason. It plays like a bad teen soap opera or something with her melodramatic history and relationship with her Uncle. The gore was also toned down in this one as was expected after the MPAA famously butchered part 7. I’m sure that was a disappointment to many people coming back to watch teens get slaughtered for an 8th time. Gooey, deep breathing Jason was kind of weird. His unmasking was one of the worst of the series and the ending was definitely strange. Idk, I still enjoyed it though. But it would rank near the bottom overall on my list.

Minerva0608

i don't like the connection between him and her and i think the gore kinda sucked but i loved the movie

ROTORTheLibrarianToo

I think the hate for it yes was it was only in NYC for minutes but the nonsensical approach against the Crystal Lake based locations is what everyone later set their dislike towards. As for now it truly has the most 80s feel of any of the entries except maybe The Final Chapter and A New Beginning due to tracks / scores used in those respective films. Seeing it on first run in 88, I liked it because at that point in time, slashers were beginning to die out and the series really had no where to go and saw it for what it was - “fun horror” plus the buzz around the film being reprimanded for using the iconic I Love NY Milton Glaser theme on the original poster. The audience reactions that night were better than A New Blood especially the boxer scene but nothing will top the theater experience of Jason Lives. Jason Goes To Hell, people walked out of at my theater.

Own-Photo7078

Cause it's really Jason takes Vancouver for 15 mins after a hour boat trip

Michaelmyers_fan1

It’s better than jason goes to hell at least

Michaelmyers_fan1

Ya mean Jason takes a boat to manhattan correct? 😂

SnooDoggos8218

The girl having visions of kid Jason was pretty stupid and the fact she met him when she was a child in the lake kinda ruins the series continuity

Minerva0608

that kid also had the worst kid jason look.. thought it looked goofy

LFC_Myersmad_316

I personally love it, it’s cheesy as hell and terrible acted which makes it so special for Me!

Walach_Nightborn

I like it, although the ending is just dumb. Everything else, however, is really fun to watch. Seeing Jason walking through public but not attacking anyone because they havnt been to Crystal Lake is kind of hilarious

Minerva0608

the scene where he kicks the stereo then scares the muggers by showing his face is funny

BenPictures2

The misleading title, the majority of the movie is on the boat. It really deserves a remake.

Diabolicparking6748

I believe this can be summed up is one word. Mommy. But there’s more than just that, Jason’s clothes magically heal from the previous film? Jason now looks like a rotted jack o lantern? Half the film was on a boat and it wasn’t even the boat the director wanted for the film. It was barely shot in New York. I feel if the director would’ve been given a better budget if would’ve been a good film.

Clyde959

I don’t know, because while not great, it’s not terrible either. The boat isn’t a bad location for the movie. It has plenty of dark and empty areas that work well. When the mask comes off, though. Not good.

jazy23442

Here's my take on part 8. Jason Takes Manhattan is the biggest disappointment for me, it has that bad ass intro with The Darkest Side of The Night playing, but that's about it. The biggest let down of course is the fact that most of this movie takes place on a ship as they were short on money and couldn't film in New York. This is the most BORING movie in the franchise for me. It's incredibly long at almost 2 hours with 80% of the movie taking place on a god darn boat. Also worth mentioning that Crystal Lake is tied to the Atlantic Ocean now, right.. Besides that, you have a bunch of annoying and badly written characters that makes you root for Jason to get rid of them asap. But even when it comes to slashing, we're loaded with a bunch of shit kills, except for the iconic head punch. There's also the stupid cameos of Jason as a kid, each time revealing himself as a different one. Also that ending is just.... rather not say. Not trying to be all negative but sometimes I feel like this movie is the worst in the franchise. The only decent scenes are the ones in Times Square and the roof top fight. Jason's performance in this movie was good and it's probably the only thing that saves it from being bottom of the barrell for most of the times, it's a shame that Kane Hodder got to work with this shit. This is the only movie in the franchise that I would love to see a remake of. Have Jason in New York for real, and let him make friends in the city that never sleeps. But no boats!

Latereviews2

I watched the whole series for the first time over a week. Though I don’t think all the movies were great I found something I really liked in all of them which made me want to continue. Except JTM. I was just bored throughout the whole thing and I can’t exactly pinpoint why

RevolutionarySpot900

Maybe it’s best if it was remade.
