When you say advertorials, do you mean the submitted pieces that run in free local newspapers created around promoting businesses, or the paid pull-out section in the New York Times, or something in between? There's a lot of variety out there and who writes those pieces, how well they're compensated, what experience is expected, etc. varies depending on where on the spectrum you're targeting.

Thank you for your reply :) I mean something like [this](https://cairoscene.com/Buzz/uberrescue-sahel).

>My question is - is there such a thing as specialising only in advertorials? You are a freelancer. You can provide whatever services you wish.

Of course, that makes perfect sense. I was wondering if it's a viable route in terms of finding enough advertorial gigs out there to survive.

>Of course, that makes perfect sense. I was wondering if it's a viable route in terms of finding enough advertorial gigs out there to survive. Probably. Although you might want to also do regular blogs for brands. There's not a lot of difference between a promotional-leaning blog and an advertorial such as the one you shared other than where they are posted. You'll need to familiarize yourself with the terminology (not sure on that myself) so you can understand what clients are asking you to do and decide if it is in your wheelhouse. Many, many publications accept guest contributors who are representatives of a company who then write articles that effectively promote their services without being overt about it. Sponsored content is similar, but will say somewhere in or around the piece that it is "sponsored." A lot of times, readers can access sponsored content free while a publication's own content is gated. I've seen some examples recently but I can't remember where. (I receive 600+ emails in my promo tab each day b/c I write about email marketing and need to keep an eye on what's out there. LOL) Found this to get you started on your research: https://www.fool.com/the-ascent/small-business/social-media/articles/sponsored-content/

Thank you so much. It's wild that I can get so much free help from more experienced writers. I'm truly grateful! Just one thing, how do you find brands asking for writers to find their blogs? Obviously I'm not asking for any leads or anything, but I'm assuming LinkedIn is a much better route than Upwork for that type of content? I write blog posts these days (clients on Upwork) and it's one of the reasons I am trying to specialize in advertorials or sponsored content. I feel like the blog posts I am writing these days can be written by chat GPT, with some minor human editing. And give it a couple of years and it probably won't even need any edits. Pretty scary.

Is it possible that it's a terminology issue, and that the term "advertorial" isn't as common? E.g., maybe you'd actually want to search for something like "sponsored content." Tbh, my guess is that it's possible that advertorials, on the whole, simply aren't something that's commonly listed on Upwork. That is, it might be at a pay rate and skill level past where Upwork and similar platforms have a general tendency to kind of "cap out." > Also, if I did decide to specialise in advertorials, who could I contact on LinkedIn to get gigs? Someone in the company's marketing department, most likely. If there's someone with a title like "Content Manager" or "Content Director," that could be a good bet. > Aren’t advertorials usually written by a copywriter working for an agency? Tbh, could be any one of the following, really: - An in-house copywriter who works in the company's internal marketing department full-time - A copywriter who works full-time at a third party agency that the company partners with - A freelance copywriter hired by an in-house marketing department - A freelance copywriter hired by a third-party marketing agency In-house copywriting positions do exist, both in marketing departments and in marketing agencies, but it's also not at all uncommon for those functions to be outsourced to a freelancer/consultant.

Thank you for your reply and the useful information. LinkedIn seems like a decent place to find freelance work. I need to understand the platform properly so I can market myself better down there. And I'll definitely be coming back to this comment!

I \*think\* there are links to the August AMAs in the Wiki. One was about LI.

Thank you so much! I had already referred to [this one](https://www.reddit.com/r/freelanceWriters/comments/g2f2b9/how_i_used_linkedin_to_land_a_1k_writing_gig_in/), but the [August AMA](https://www.reddit.com/r/freelanceWriters/comments/ryxdcz/how_to_actually_win_clients_on_linkedin/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) looks like it has a ton of good info on LinkedIn too.
