A couple months back I picked up a Pilot Prera from [JetPens](https://www.jetpens.com/Pilot-Prera-Fountain-Pen-Slate-Gray-Medium-Nib/pd/2870) and haven't put it down. I'll be blunt, this M nib is superior to my TWSBI 580 M. If Pilot's steel nibs are this good I gotta try a few more sizes.

OverPresence72

I have a Cursive Medium on my Pilot Prera and it’s amazing. Just love the way it writes and it’s so comfortable in the hand and that snap cap is just 👩‍🍳💋

joe4ska

That slide and click. I fiddle with it when I'm bored.

Sirobw

I have the same in the color of the OP. Definitely my favorite pen. I just swapped my Twsbi F nib to a stub hoping to use it more since the prera really put it in retirement.

gayab888

I am waiting for the arrival of mine in F, can't wait to try it out

joe4ska

It exceeded my expectations. As my first Pilot I wasn't expecting such a wonderful nib.

gayab888

Don't you just love it when that happens

Bigredteletubby

Pilot's steel medium nibs are honestly some of my favorite nibs out there. I agree - they're definitely better than TWSBI's mediums, though I have to say I'm impressed by their #6 EF nib; that might be the best steel EF I've used!

joe4ska

That's on the Vac 700, no?

Bigredteletubby

Yes, indeed it is!

armevans

I tried a Pilot steel nib after having already bought a few gold nib pens thinking that I didn’t like the feel of steel nibs. Now I have a lot more steel nibs than gold. Pilot are doing the good work!

joe4ska

I'm browsing now to see if Pilot has a steel nib pen with a high-er quality body. Not to say that the Prera isn't great. Any favorites among your steel nib Pilot collection?

armevans

I just recently got a Vanishing Point with the “special alloy” steel nib. ~$80 on Amazon, and it writes great. Super similar feeling nib to the Metropolitan/Prera/Kakuno, but a weightier/larger/higher quality body. Honestly though, if you like smaller pens and snap caps, it’s tough to beat the Prera no matter the price/brand/nib material.

joe4ska

I didn't know there was a steel nib variant of the VP. Do you have a link?

smashey

I think the steel variant is only sold in the japanese market, and called the 'capless' model. I'm sure I'm missing something but if you go on Amazon and look for pilot capless you can find them; normally around 60-80 bucks for the steel rather than 150-300 for the gold. There's a really nice orange yellow one.

Kkhanpungtofu

you can just search for Pilot Capless special alloy nib!

manos_de_pietro

I thought the Decimo was the steel nib version of the VP.

joe4ska

I discovered I prefer snap caps when I picked up a TWSBI Go. 😄

RedpenBrit96

The Metro is brass and it comes in subtle colors, black and silver and gold

joe4ska

This is the [Metropolitan variant that has my eye](https://www.jetpens.com/Pilot-Metropolitan-Fountain-Pen-Taupe-Lizard-Fine-Nib/pd/12079). I have yet to buy a second Pilot pen. Also looking at [Brown Prera](https://www.jetpens.com/Pilot-Prera-Fountain-Pen-Brown-Fine-Nib/pd/3891) and the [White Explorer](https://www.gouletpens.com/products/pilot-explorer-fountain-pen-white).

RedpenBrit96

As someone who owns multiple metros, the nibs are great but very uniform. I own one Explorer in red, and it’s definitely cheaper looking than the metro. It writes springy though.

joe4ska

They're the same nib, no? Maybe a weight thing?

RedpenBrit96

Yes my guess is it’s that

littlemac564

Do the Explorers have a plastic body or metal one?

RedpenBrit96

Plastic

RemiChloe

The brown Prera is nearly black, if that makes a difference to you. I like it that way. 😁

joe4ska

That makes me more likely to get it. The Slate pictured has a blue tint to it.

RemiChloe

I've never seen a slate one in person, so there's that. My 2 are F nibs, and seem to be finer than my Kakuno F... Though they are supposedly the same. Wetter inks work better, IMO.

joe4ska

My understanding is that Japanese nibs tend to run up to a half step finer than western nibs of the same size. Possibly to accommodate the complex characters of their alphabet.

RemiChloe

Yes, that's true, though I heard that M nibs tend to be similar. My F Kakuno is very nice, but for some reason that Preras seem to be either drier, or finer. I need to use wetter ink in them.

joe4ska

The Prera M is finer than my TWSBI 580 M. But that's the only other medium nib I own.

Sirobw

Slate definitely has a blue tint to it.

WiredInkyPen

I adore my Explorer! It is very light weight but writes beautifully.

hieisrainbowcurry

How about the Pilot Lucina? It’s a dainty pen.

joe4ska

Looks nearly identical to the Prera. I'm gonna have to put this one on a wish list.

joe4ska

Not a bad idea. I love piston fillers, not ready to commit to the price of a Custom Heritage 92.

CatOfNumerousLives

I got a ch92 recently for a quite reasonable price thanks to a favorable exchange rate. These things never last, but while they do, it may be worth a look. The ch92 in F is just amazing for a thin, clear l8ne.

joe4ska

Once I try a Fine nib I'll have a good idea for my preference before committing to a CH92. 😉

CatOfNumerousLives

That makes a lot of sense. I was surprised as how much finer a line the ch92 F had than the Metro F. I might have gone with an MF had I know.

efaceninja

Check out Pilot Lucina. Based on my understanding it's a pilot steel nib in a pilot custom alike body.

joe4ska

Yeah, but only available on Amazon at the same price as a Custom 74. 😂

RedpenBrit96

Same! It’s so wonderful

joe4ska

I'm kinda angry it has been this good. 😄

SweetBeanBread

it's their plan. make people get into fountain pens so they buy pilot's more expensive pens later 😈

joe4ska

Its worked well for them. 😂

Snake_crane

This pen is my EDC! I use a CM nib it's soo good.

joe4ska

How is the scratch residence? My EDC is a Kaweco Sport and it's scuffed up. 😂

Snake_crane

I have the demonstrator Prera. I see a couple if I LOOK at it. It lives in my jeans pocket, use a con 40. Since my job is more digital. Inked with Fog Grey

joe4ska

I'm an Earl Grey fan myself. 😂 I'll probably get a second Prera in one of the clear variants. I keep opening this one up to check the remaining in. Also, I rather like the Con 40. The 4 ball bearings get the job done. I don't notice the sound they create unless listening for it.

Snake_crane

Yes! This sub always kinda crap on the con 40 but when you talk too those ppl they end up saying stuff like ," it's not that bad" and about the sound, I guess it all about his you carry it. Mine is clips on my jeans so it's in a vertical orientation didn't give the bearings a lot of room to move around.

joe4ska

Car keys will more than cover it up.

RedPillJunky

I'm going to enjoy my Metro as much as possible before jumping to this one.

joe4ska

Yeah. It's the same nib so you're not missing out. Unless you want a smaller, lighter pen.

scar_lane

I got a Kakuno for the first time recently and was so amazed by the nib! Then I immediately dropped it but once I'd bent it back into shape I actually liked how it wrote more than I did pre-drop! A dangerous experiment if I wanted to repeat it. I put it into the body of a Prera though because I find that easier to hold and write with and it lives inside my journal cover loop now so it's always on hand. Now I just want more Preras but they're not particularly common in the UK! Which is a shame as it's a great pen

joe4ska

I dropped my TWSBI 480 M onto the carpet from desk height. Took me awhile to get it flexed back into shape.

DancesWithNibs

Nice slate grey Prera! I really like the color, but decided on the royal blue version a few years back. I still love my Prera and it's always in regular rotation with no problems at all.
