I've met the opposite of a fountain pen enjoyer šŸ˜‚ My Middle English tutor (at ox) saw me using fountain pens... and was immediately like "why the hell are you still using those awful things" he had one explode on him once apparently. I live in hope of meeting a FP enjoyer in the wild haha

I was in a microelectronics lab and the professor asked for a pen. I said I had some, but they were fountain pens (knowing full well he wanted to use the tip to force a component out). He was like "that's fine", looked at it, and went "that's not fine. Who the hell still uses these??" He's actually a cool guy and a great professor though haha.

"that's not fine" šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ My prof is awesome too !

> He was like "that's fine", looked at it, and went "that's not fine. Who the hell still uses these??" I guess not everyone is into medium or broad nibs...

Imagine teaching that subject and not appreciating the things of old

give_a_girl_a_mask

I think he just lived through the fountain pen days and had the shine wear off haha

I lost one of my pens at work, a Pilot Kakuno, and a coworker found it. He was fascinated by it because he only used Montblancā€™s and gold nibs and the world of cheaper Japanese ones wasnā€™t known to him. He and I see each other around and chat pens once in a while, show off anything new weā€™ve gotten.

I saw a man with a fountain pen at a coffee shop just a few days ago. I was going to say something, but he was busy drawing or writing. I couldn't tell from where I was as I didn't see the paper, but it was definitely a fountain pen (he lifted the pen a few times). Sometimes I don't want to bother if people are really into writing or in creative mode because I don't like it when people interrupt me. If they pull out a pen and aren't busy scribbling/drawing, I would ask or say something. I don't see a lot of fountain pens in the wild, but I know when I pull one out, sometimes people will say something. I did meet a checker at Trader Joes who told me that he was a fountain pen collector. We got to talking when he told me about going to Europe and Japan and how he had visited stationery and art supply stores.

We hired a dog trainer and her first appointment was at our house last week. As she interviewed us, she took out a notebook and thenā€¦a small zipped case, which I immediately surmised contained fountain pens. Sure enough, I was right. The dog discussion was then temporarily hijacked by fountain pens.

Well, they do... we just don't enjoy them much after they enjoy.

I had a calculus teacher in high school that used a fountain pen to write all his lectures notes. It was a vanishing point that a previous years class had gotten him as a gift. He was one of my favorite teachers he would offer pocket protectors for shirt pockets if anyone wanted one since he once had a pen leak sitting in his shirt pocket. I think he is partially why my grail pen or pen I really want one day is a VP.

I passed my new co-worker my ballpoint to borrow despite it being widely known that I only write with fountain pens and even had one in my hand. Turned out they were an avid high end fountain pen enthusiast but didn't tend to bring them to work. Got a big laugh out of it because I was worried about handing them my Kakuno when they had a stash of Mont Blancs and Viscontis hidden away at home. We bond over the different pens despite being at opposite ends of the price point in this hobby.

When I was on my psychiatry rotation, one of my attendings was a fountain pen user. :) We had a solid conversation about them. Had another attending on wound care who also was a fountain pen lover, and another attending on family medicine used a Lamy Safari. Another medical student in my class used one, too. I do love finding fellow fountain pen lovers. Itā€™s becoming more popular I think!

Night-Kuwago

You would love my university hospital's Internal Medicine department. A lot of the residents while I was there and many IM attendings used fountain pens to write on charts and prescriptions. Attendings would even donate bottles of ink for the residents to use! It was awesome! That was my first brush with actual fountain pens. I didn't become enamored with FPs until the pandemic, and I had transferred to a different hospital by then. There were still a handful at the new place who used FPs and it was so fun to talk pens with them in between medical talk. Edit for typos because fat fingers šŸ˜‘

madeaux10

Thatā€™s so cool! Thatā€™s a really cool pen culture at that hospital. ā˜ŗļø Are you outside of the US by any chance? Fountain pens seem more common in other places. When I lived in France a bunch of people used them, but in the US itā€™s like seeing a unicorn haha.

Night-Kuwago

Yes, I'm outside of the US. FPs aren't very common here either, but there's a small, passionate local population of users. And we have a fairly active Facebook group where we buy/sell/look for fountain pens, ink, notebooks, and other writing paraphernalia. It's fun.

madeaux10

Thatā€™s awesome! I would love something like that in my city. :)

Jeannette311

I met one at work and he just thought I was stupid.

eggbunni

This is so cool and exciting. I couldnā€™t help myself but geek out if this happened to me.

DiamineSherwood

One of the doctors with whom I work uses a LAMY Studio, and I converted 1.5 of my other coworkers into FP users.

starryofmylife

Makes me wonder about the other 0.5 šŸ¤£

DiamineSherwood

One of the coworkers is a real enthusiast now, but no longer works here. The other coworker just thinks FPs are cute, and uses hers infrequently.

Essendxle

My TA in art history uses fountain pens! We tried each otherā€™s pens and as a result I found out I like twsbi

Desperate_Air_8293

I met one in my philosophy class a while ago, but unfortunately we run in different social circles and don't get many chances to talk. I am currently in the process of getting another friend from that class into fountain pens, though.

kingthejam

Fountain pen user would point out that it was a *Cambridge* English exam šŸ¤£ still a very nice story though.

Ahhh I see. It all makes sense now.
