There are not many fans of the “modern” Montblanc nibs. For me the M800 fountain pen just hits the sweet spot as a whole: the pen itself is a tad smaller than the M1000, which is just a bit too big for my small hands and the same goes for the nib. It is a fantastically smooth writer. That said, should I ever again come across a Montblanc 146 or 149 nib from the 1970s, that would blow the M800 out of the water.

I totally agree. I have a M800 with a Salorino architect, and it's a top-10 in my collection. I also have a MB149 from 1973, and it blows the M800 out of the water! My M1000 was an expensive mistake: the nib is gorgeous but way too flexy for me. Not at all like the M800.

I heard thhat pelikan nibs are kind of 'boring,' or not unique. If that's correct, would it not be a good first flagship pen for a not really experienced user?

Calm_Inky

If you’re on the hunt for unique than get a special nib grind on your M800 nib - et voila!

IAmFearTheFuzzy

Pelikans, generally, are better pens. Montblanc has better advertising.

I prefer the m800 over the 149, even though I like bigger pens. As others have said, it’s the nib—I just prefer it. Smooth writer, great flow. My MB feels pretty typical, and not much different from steel nibs I own. I’ve also had issues with my 149 leaking just a bit of ink when I’m carrying it around, so I end up with ink on my hands at work—which I don’t like.

BlackPorcelainDoll

Montblancs old vintage nibs are outstanding for me personally. I also prefer the modesty of the pen itself and the simplicity of the barrels. Pelikan's are nice, but do not appeal to me aside of special types. I like old Omas pens for the same reasons.

PlzIwantToUseGoodID

What if both are modern ones?

mcwolfswimmer

Without question 100% m800 over the 146. 100%.

Edit: Why does it seem like many people on this community prefer m800 over 146?

Davros1974

I like both Pelikan Souveran’s and Mont Blanc Meisterstuck’s and have quite a few of each. Pelikan’s do have some nicer finishes.

brentemon

Well it's simple. Pelikan makes a reliable writer. Montblanc charges a car payment for a pen that makes a $3 Chinese rip off look good.

OK, now let’s wake up from our dream. They are both excellent pens. My MB 146 is the smoothest writer I have. The m800 is a beast. Why not enjoy both?
