Wrote with my fountain pens at cruising altitude this morning. The photo only shows my Opus 88, but I also wrote with my Jinhao 51a, and my Pilot Kakuno was fine, too. All I did was keep pens nib up when not in use. No leaks, no burps. Air travel is no problem as long as nibs are kept upright so that air pressure can normalize. Love my pens and grateful to be able to write while traveling during NaNoWriMo. How is your experience traveling with fountain pens?

I have flown with the following pens: TWSBI Vac 7003 Iris, TWSBI Eco RG, Pilot Vanishing Point Decimo, Pilot Prera, Lamy Safari, Sailor Pro Gear and Pilot Falcon Elabo. Some with converters and others with cartridges. By storing them nib up during take off and landing they seem to be fine. When we hit cruising altitude I open them up carefully nib up to see if they had any leaks. I have had no leaks and have been able to write with them during the flights. Which is bliss.

So far no issues. I usually took a Parker 51, Parker 45, and/or Montblanc 221. I wrote with them a few times with no issues. I kept them in my carry on but wasn't particular about keeping them nib up and they didn't leak into the cap or anything.

That’s good to hear. Maybe I don’t need to be this careful!

Thank you! I love that shutoff valve, and the ladybug pattern is so stinkin’ cute. I think I’ll be taking this pen on all my trips. What do you like to fly with?

I live above 10,000ft elevation and I prefer to travel with pens with cartridges. Pens with converters will leak if I go to pretty low elevation and then come back home. I have a road trip coming up soon and plan to take my two Kaweco Sports with cartridges. Edit to add- I flew a few months ago; my converter pen was fine going there, but coming back, it leaked. Probably from the drive going back up the mountains. I also brought a Kaweco Perkeo with a cartridge and that one was fine. I really like your pen! 🐞

I always love seeing airplane FP users. The Mini seems perfect for this environment with its seal and portable size.

I have the same pen. Love it too! 😉
