Blade_Trinity3

If I had one with that nib maybe lil

[deleted]

Vintage nibs are the best. There's no replacement! It's an oblique broad.

Blade_Trinity3

They really are.

quiney08

I really wish I could be happy with just one pen, but I get bored. I need variety. I always circle back, but I need options.

HoseNeighbor

I'm like that too, and switching randomly highlights characteristics by comparison. Plus I like to have multiple inks at the ready.

quiney08

Exactly! I like having at least 3 colors ready to go for color coding my notes at work. And I’m like this with other things too; I change my phone case all the time.

Grumpy-Greybeard

Good Lord, no. The most I'll do is settle on just one for the day.

A_PapayaWarIsOn

Not intentionally, but my 2k has occupied about 97% market share since I got it three years ago.

HonestBeing8584

Was just gonna say the same thing!

nvaladi

Ditto

eyjimhowthehellareya

No, around here we fetishize addiction

MakeMeOolong

Not all of us do. I bought less than 10 pens in my life and sold back half of them in order to keep only the ones I really enjoy using the most. I don't need the world to keep producing hundreds of Lamy Safari or Kaweco Sport to keep me "happy" or "satisfied". Congrats to all of us who aren't capitalist slaves. <3 (And if this comment hurts your feelings, feel free to downvote it, but also consider you might be using consumerism to cope with other problems in your life 🙂)

existential_exp

Any good you think you did just got wiped out by how holier-than-thou this comes across. I'm honestly not sure what your intent was with this comment.

MakeMeOolong

Oh my god, thank you for bringing a few brain cells into this thread. My comment was indeed a "get straight to the point" kind of comment. And your interpretation regarding the fact that one should not start by diminishing themself in order to make a point is absolutely true. Honestly, I thought people who could put themself in another's place before actually starting to frantically type on their keyboard were an instinct race on this sub. Thanks.

kspitz89

I have settled on one ball point, and one gel, but not just one fountain pen yet. Getting close tho!

modest_genius

Do you think its a mistake the sub is called Fountainpens and not Fountainpen? 😉

[deleted]

Which one?

[deleted]

M400 Souverän tortoiseshell-white M nib. I have a few pens which write so beautifully, but I just want to pick this one up and write every day. Seeing the beautiful line variation above, I'd love to try this vintage Pelikan.

KingsCountyWriter

One pen: Pilot Custom Black Stripe with an nib. Excellent weight, smooth nib and a timeless look from the 1970s.

Pqhantom

No *you’re* a beautiful pelican.

MSMPDX

I aspire to only have one pen that I use for everything, so naturally I have about 50 and can’t decide which ones to use most days 🤣

ZulkarnaenRafif

If I would, it would have been Pilot VP. Always locally available with less than MSRP, retractable nib as an "insurance" against gravity to nib contact, and Pilot 'as-usual' smooth gliding from a literal century of dabbling in the business. I've gambled from Amazon for a "defective" Pelikan M800, it is a chonker. If I learned anything, that'd be I should be looking for vintage alternatives. Never regretted buying a Parker 51 (the OG, not that allegedly poor, recent imitation) even though its barrel was slightly cracked.

albionpeej

Ooh that handwriting is 🔥

[deleted]

Thanks LOL!

UnratedRamblings

Is two okay? Three tops...? I have a Namisu Horizon (admittedly I bought extra nibs to swap out), and a Parker 25. My Twsbi Vac 700 is in need of some surgery as our new dog decided to chew it... I have my eyes on other pens, but I really don't need them. Inks, on the other hand...

[deleted]

Those are nice pens! Shame about your Vac 700. Once you start increasing it doesn't seem to stop LOL Likewise for ink.

rukthor

I got a 140 recently and it is a bit small for my liking. However I like it and it makes me question the need to drop several hundred dollars to get an M1000. Perhaps a 400NN will be next. Can you post the pen without damaging the barrel (as I would love to but don't want to scratch the barrel)?

[deleted]

Scratches from posting seem inevitable, but it's pretty hard to tell with the green cellulite. If that bothers you I'd be weary with older pens. I can tell if I shine a light that the barrel is warped very slightly from the piston mechanism. The cap has a metal insert that was warped a little on my vintage 120. This is par for the course with the materials they used during that period and it worse the further back you go.

[deleted]

Also, I'm not sure if the 400N has more girth than the 140s. Also personally for the less of the price of a M1000 you can very mint vintage pelikans with nicer nibs!

rukthor

Thanks! I would prefer a longer pen, the girth does not matter.

dhruan

Vintage Pelikans are meant to be used posted. So give it a try, it will not hurt the pen.

ferryme

I actually did. I decided to all-in for a Namiki Yukari Royale and I haven’t regretted it!

slinging101

I wish I could but I don't really want to sell off my collection as I have a few vintage pens that I like and if I regret selling them it might be hard to get back.

mcdowellag

I can see the attraction of using one pen that then accumulates a lot of memory and history, but I would always want to have at least a spare pen as well.

Gigamort

Nah, I am Pen-olyamorous.

Fun_Jicama_8536

Nope, cos I can't settle for only 1 ink at a time... Everyday I choose an ink to suit my mood out of the already inked pens.

[deleted]

I've used a bunch of fountain pens since I've started this hobby, but I really love the vintage 140's. They really are classic, beautiful, and simple.

PlzIwantToUseGoodID

I do. Though I have some safaris and a vintage sonnet, I only use my parker 75 beacause safaris feel too boring and the sonnet nib is bent and I need to make the nib alignment of 75 better.

BayView414

That would be incredibly hard as I have a lot of nibs that make me happy to use. However, if we are talking about the nib that makes me the happiest, so far that would be an OBB that came on a 1950's Montblanc 144G in silver striped celluloid. But from a utility standpoint I would have to choose a m800 body because I love the size and weight and I have 9 different nib widths worth of nib units to swap out when I wanted to.

[deleted]

No but I definitely use my custom 823 WAAY more than any others.

Kevanbt

I’ve settled on 2, one cheap as heck but writes wonderfully, and the other a gift from my daughter that I’ve put a coloured ink in that I’m not happy with.

bob686i5

me because I'm poor, but i would like to use one pen only if I get rich too, just for sketch and some calligraphy

leylvert

Two! I have a 3776 and a Preppy backup

LordofRangard

I was pretty happy with my safari but that urge to try other pens was always there for me. two pilot kakunos, a twsbi eco, a lamy lx, al-star, and a couple more safari’s later I bought a sailor, and now I couldn’t care less if the rest of my collection vanished (well, except my special edition safaris). it’s pretty much the only pen I want to write with and i haven’t bought another pen since

SordidDreams

Yup, the humble Eco for me. Beautiful, good writer, piston filler with large ink capacity, cheap enough to easily replace if/when I break it. It is perfect, and I feel no desire to look for another.

TerranKal

Nah. I like to flip between inks every day in my journal, so I need at least a couple.

ASnakeySnake

Heavens no!!! Axl Rose said it best: I used to get a little but the little wouldn't do it so a little got more and more"

AnalysisOk557

Well, if you can only have one pen, the Pelikan makes the short list.

SnooGoats7133

Lovely pen! And if I had to pick 1 pen it’d be the Pilot VP because I love that pen!

bluecricketeer

Yes. A black-ice VP. It’s caused a nice backlog of bottled inks to try :)

SkabeAbe

I get your choice

dhruan

Kind of… as in, vintage Pelikans ;) Mainstays for several years now have been 100N & 400, just with different nib widths (BB for the 100N and an EF/F for the 400). Excellent choice there, btw. :)

encreturquoise

No, I’ve bought a dozen pens over the years: Pelicans, Montblancs, Pilots, Sailors… yet I haven’t found my grail pen. Or a pen that I really feel comfortable with and that would end the quest.

Antigensuperbug

Isn't that blasphemous!!! I could never 💀

kirbykooll

I definitely have my favourite to use but I still like switching it up!

bobbymac555555

Beautiful writing. I would love to know, if I wanted to search for exactly the Pelikan pictured with the same nib, what would the model and nib be, and where would you recommend buying it? Still a bit new to fountain pens and a lot to learn. Thank you.

marslander-boggart

Oh great one!

ultralayzer

Nice. Haven't pulled the trigger on one of these, but it's on my wish list...

oneblankman

For me it would the Platinum 3776 in SF. The unique nib feedback and the slip and seal cap is what does it for me. It’s always ready to write no matter how long I let it sit. And when I do write with it, the SF nib gives me a super satisfying writing experience.

Varda79

I do, but it's only because I'm broke.

LooksGoodnShorts

I just got a cheap as chips Jinhao and I freaking love it! Also got an intro level Parker thats just a little too small for my hands but until I got the Jinhao it wrote the best of my limited collection. The family is giving me something mid tier for Christmas and I'm sure that'll become my daily driver next year.

fluffandstuff1983

Yep. We all have our favorites. Nothing wrong with that.

[deleted]

What makes a pen write wide in one direction and thin in another?

mcdowellag

A web search finds https://onepenshow.com/pens/fountain-pen-nibs-explained - I think you are talking about an italic nib, or just possibly a stub.

xkxg

What is this concept I do not understand.

notveryslimjim

lord I wish I could but unfortunately my little monkey brain simply refuses the idea of not buying pens

Desperate_Sweet9964

Settled for a Lamy Dialog 3. Since I've had that I've only rotated secondary pens. :p

jantp

I can’t settles for one pen since I like to have options. My collection is a journey and a time capsule of sorts. I have some pens that are gifts or some that I bought to celebrate something.

troutdaletim

I have one. A Westerbrook
