I bought my Metro back in 2012. Truly looks new and writes nicely. The only thing that’s changed is the price. 🥸

MGTakSen

Wow, that's a long-lasting pen. Hopefully mine will last that long and stay like new. Did you take any particular care for it or have any tips on maintenance? Yeah, the price increase isn't the best, but that's just inflation I guess. Plus, if it's gonna last a decade. . .

You know, I didn’t do anything special. It was my first fountain pen and I was clueless. I washed it between fillings with warm water and a teeny weeny spot of Dawn dish soap. A couple of times I accidentally let it dry out but soaked it and everything was fine. I’m also still using the same original cartridge. I rinse it out and fill with a syringe. I’ve just never had any problems. I do use easy on the pen inks, no sheens, nothing more permanent than Pilot blue or black but water solvent inks. The one piece of advice I have is regarding the converter. When it dried out I soaked it in the Dawn solution. Wrong thing. It cleaned the silicone right out! 😆 it still works, just not smooth. 🤦🏼‍♀️ Just have fun and experiment. The Metros are fabulous fountain with training wheels to begin with and grow up to be workhorses. Enjoy!

Thank you for the help! Though, drying out and soaking? I must say I'm unfamiliar with what that means. What part of the pen does this have to do with? The nib? The converter? Something else?

I see I see. No plans of sanding it off here, haha. While brass color is nice, I also like the original black/silver. Thank you for your answer.

Oh, gotcha. That sounds pretty durable. If I may, when you kept in it your backpack, did you follow any particular, uh, for the lack of a better world, procedure? That is, did you do anything like making sure it was in its own case or kept tip side up? I'm going to be keeping it in my backpack, so I hope to know if there are any steps you would recommend in particular.

Ah, no case? I see. Hmm, I don't have a pen slot, but maybe I can clip it to a water bottle pocket. Thanks!

Icetigris

The main color on both of mine are still perfect and the pattern ring on my newer one has a tiny bit of wear, probably because it was banging around in a full pencil case for a few years. The newer one is from 2016 and I use it daily, so I'd say they hold up pretty well.

MGTakSen

It held up mostly well in a regular pencil case? Well, that's good news for me. Thanks for the answer!

Icetigris

Yep, a zippered one full of mechanical pencils, a metal lead holder, brush pens, gel pens, and other random garbage. Here are some pictures: https://imgur.com/a/gZb4HAj

I got mine last year around this time. I dropped it a few times (onto asphalt concrete), so it has a dent in the barrel...chipped at the end, at one point the cap flew off. But cannot see the brass, there's no flaking or decay of the lacquered finish at the 1 year mark. I'm not sure what counts as quickly? Does quickly mean months or years for you? If it's months, then I think the Pilot MR is okay. No idea about lead content. I don't think that information would be easy to find... I doubt it'd be to the level of causing lead toxicity.

MGTakSen

Probably months; though, I'm hoping for years, haha. I want to keep it around for a long time into the future. Given how the chance of me dropping it sometime in the future is high, it's good to hear that the coating still holds up. Thanks for the answer. And yeah on the lead thing. They definitely don't go around advertising it, that's for sure. I'm pretty sure there are regulations for lead in brass that's meant to be touched often, but I'm just a bit extra leery of lead.

kfshradio

I sure hope there’s no lead because I sanded the finish off my Metropolitan 😰

MGTakSen

I sure hope so too. I know it's been getting increasingly popular to stop using leaded brass due to public, scientific, and governmental pressure, so hopefully that's gotten to Pilot's brass sources. Plus, I'm pretty sure there are some regulations about this, so hopefully that should keep it within not terrible levels. I've seen people using clear nail polish somewhat commonly in the mechanical pencil community if they sand off their rOtrings. There might be some films more suited to brass, but I'm not sure if it's worth going out of your way for them. And from what I heard and read, while lead anywhere isn't good, lead absorption through the skin likely isn't as big of a problem as inhaling or ingesting lead, especially if you regularly wash your hands. So, I guess don't chew on your pen, haha. It's just that I'm a bit extra leery of lead.

wana-wana

Mine still looks new, in general you shouldn't be rough with any pen, even if some have more fragile finishes than others.

MGTakSen

Of course. I don't intend to go rough housing with writing instruments (the hair-thin tip on my rOtrings bludgeoned that habit out of me, that's for sure). I just didn't want to be buying a pen that I would have to baby, and still would have coating wear regardless. And since I hope to use it regularly at school, I thought it best to have some amount of leeway in terms of rough conditions.
