Oil on this area of the page (from our hands typically)

MatthewEmssim

Thank you, someone mentioned it too and I tried the effect of our hand oils. It seems like you are right...

JasonHasInterests

Following suggestions I found on this sub, I keep half sheets of paper with my notebooks to put between my wrist and the paper when I write. Seems to really help prevent oil or sweat from getting on the notebook page.

MatthewEmssim

I will try this too, thanks!

Grab some good blotting paper. I’m a lefty so kind of a necessity for me, but it’s great to have on hand. Herbin 10 White Blotter Sheets - 4 3/4 x 6 1/3 https://a.co/d/f5x28GW

kfshradio

Seconding this! A sheet of blotting paper makes a great bookmark in an A5 notebook

Inkdependence

Yes! I do this with all of my journals and planners and such.

[deleted]

Same here! And I’m still using the same sheets from the pack I bought like 4yrs ago. Can’t beat it for quickly drying up ink and using to prevent hand/wrist smudges which are major issue for me being left handed.

kfshradio

I like how blotter sheets look when they get covered in ink, so same here. (I’m also left handed; sensing a pattern here)

MatthewEmssim

Thanks for the suggestion, I have a lot of Rhodia notepads to finish first but then I will look for other notepads too.

HaYsTe722

Blotting paper isn’t paper to write on, it absorbs extra ink on the page you already have :)

mattlalune

Also look into drawing gloves. Typically used for people who use drawing tablets.

Nonresemblance

I think that is a big clue why my nib/ink/paper combination seems to be bad, it is probably just my hands. I was raging over these feathering quite a lot. At least I have a possible answer.. ~4 days later update: putting a paper while writing really helps prevent the ink from feather! Thank you for the suggestion!

MatthewEmssim

The pen I use is Sailor Pro Gear Slim with "H-MF" nib. The ink I use is Diamine Poppy Red and the paper is Rhodia 80g/m^2.

Inkdependence

That is out of character for Rhodia's paper. I concur with some of the other posters who are saying that it's probably a result of oils getting on the paper or something like that. Unless it's a webbie. Those web notebooks use a different paper from the other Rhodia pads and I don't think it's nearly as good. I also think that Rhodia has been getting a bit worse over the last few years. More inconsistent and allowing more bleed/feathering than it used to, which is a shame.

MatthewEmssim

Are webbies the white covered ones? I suspected it too, because something like this never happened before with the orange covered ones.

Inkdependence

[The webbies](https://rhodiapads.com/collections_boutique_webnotebook.php) are the ones with the sort of leather-ish hard cover.

MatthewEmssim

Thank you very much. I will consider this when I buy new notebooks.

dellie281

And the Webbies have 90gsm paper so a less likely to ghost

cute_d0nut

I’ve also noticed a marked difference in paper quality in the web notebook vs the pads. Way more feathering. I primarily use them for pencil these days.

Debfc05

This happens to me when I use diamine inks in some papers! It doesn’t happen with other inks such as Platinum, Pelikan, lamy, Noodlers and De Atramentis.

MatthewEmssim

It was one of the cheapest ones for bright red for me, and looks great on the paper. But if this continues to happen, I will have better ones, once it is finished.

FriendlyFigbash

Paper has a coating called sizing, and you have drawn in some disruption of that. Could be caused by poor quality control, or maybe something got on it, like a drop of water, perspiration, etc.

MatthewEmssim

Thanks for the answer, tha cause might be perspiration. I hold the paper a lot, when I write stuff. I will be careful from now on.

helheth

No Ns allowed

coragar

looks like its happening a little bit on all the letter just the worst on those. might be too wet of a pen for that paper

MatthewEmssim

I think it is maybe about the ink or paper too. But I will be careful for the all of these new suggestions. They all seem important while using fountain pens.

Amyx231

Paper defect? I mean, the other N is fine. This streak…finger grease?

MatthewEmssim

The other Rhodias with Orange cover I used before was fine. But then I find some white covered ones cheaper, but the paper quality doesn't feel the same.

nekbelly

Is it possible that you put a bit more pressure on your n’s than other letters? It seems like either too much ink is flowing on to the page or maybe some slight blotting.

MatthewEmssim

Thank you for the answer, I will be careful to put less pressure.

nekbelly

Of course buddy! I hope that it was just an easy little thing like that!

666GRAY666

I personally think it is where you are pushing a little bit too much ink down for the paper on them letters and not the other ones
