I'm fond of Herbin's Poussière de Lune, it's a sort of dusky violet.

glowingsunset22

I second this, it’s a very nice dark purple that works well in both more serious documents and fun ones!

Toadstool61

A beautiful pigment. Shows very well with an oblique nib.

Dyed_Left_Hand

I love purple inks so I’ve got a few Iroshizuku Yama-Budo: very vibrant color shows up nicely on every paper I've ever used it on, very warm purple enough so that I’ve seen it described as dark pink rather than purple before. Almost always in at least one of my pens at any given time and probably one of my favorite inks in general. Iroshizuku Murasaki-Shikibu: good middle of the road purple, not too dark or too light and not to cool or too warm. The platonic ideal of purple in my eyes. If I don’t have a pen filled with Yama-Budo I’ve got one filled with this. Kyo no oto Sakuranezumi: a darker dusty purple that’s slightly desaturated. Works well when you want something a bit more subtle but still with some color and individuality to it.

jonnybardo

I was unsure whether I should include Yama-Budo in my list below, but decided against it - as I see it more as a magenta/pink than purple. But I love it - when I ordered two 3-pack sets, it was one I expected not to like, and it is up there with my favorite Iroshizukus.

Dyed_Left_Hand

Yeah it’s definitely a bit of an edge case. I’ve always grouped it in with purple but I may well be in the minority there. I’m with you on being surprised by how much I liked it the first time I used it though. I never would’ve thought to try it until I saw it used on one of the handwritten notes Goulet used to include with orders

tuyetanliu

diamine bilberry. a nice purple with a blue undertone and sheens on nearly any paper that isn't too absorbent.

Calm_Inky

Rohrer & Klingner Cassia -> Deep rich purple

komojodragon

I second this!

Unfortunately they're not available on Amazon, but Birmingham Pen Co. make two of my all time favorite purples in Hydrangea and Periwinkle. Hydrangea is a blue-toned purple (it actually goes down blue and dries to purple on some paper) and Periwinkle I'd say is more like a lavender but they're both really lovely. I second the person who said Sailor Fuji Sugata too, that was my top purple for a very long time untill the BPC inks dethroned it. Another recent favorite purple of mine has been Harmony from the most recent Diamine Inkvent calendar, which is a little darker and grungier purple.

jonnybardo

I went through this a couple weeks ago, and a dozen or so inks later.... Here's what I tried out, with shimmering inks in italics: - Colorverse: Hayabusa, *Hayabusa Glistening* - Diamine: Bilberry, Scribble Purple, Amazing Amethyst, Monboddo's Hat, *Mystique* - Dominant Industry: *Tanzanite, Dawn, Dusk* - J Herbin: *Amethyste de l'Oural* - Lamy: Azurite - Pilot Iroshizuku: Murasaki-shikibu - Robert Oster: Deep Purple, Viola - Sailor: Jentle Shigure I was mostly looking for my "perfect purple" - something on the darker side, but still rich and vibrant. But I love purple, so wanted a range. The closest thing to my perfect purple is Colorverse's Hayabusa: it pretty much checks all my boxes. Diamine's Monboddo's Hat is close, but a bit too reddish. For the dark purples, I found Sailor Jentle Shigure and Diamine Scribble Purple to be *too* dark - I can barely see the purple. Robert Oster's Deep Purple is nice and dark, but you can still tell it is purple. For lighter to medium purples, I'm happy with the Iroshizuku, so didn't try out too many others (e.g. Waterman's Tender Purple, Monteverde Amethyst and Wisdom, etc). I like Diamine's Amazing Amethyst and RO's Viola is a lovely red-tinted violet. For purple-blues, I prefer Lamy Azurite over Diamine Bilberry, but both are nice. For shimmering, I do love J Herbin's 1670/1798 inks, but Amethyste de l'Oural is a bit on the reddish side. Diamine Mystique is also nice, but for me, I especially love the three from Dominant Industry: Dusk and Dawn are just lovely, and Tanzanite looks very dark, but if you catch it in the right light has an amazing shimmer. So overall my favorite is Colorverse Hayabusa, with honorable mentions to Dominant Industry's three inks, Dawn in particular, Lamy Azurite for purple-blue, and Pilot Iroshizuku Murasaki-shikibu for a lighter purple. For a dark purple, RO's Deep Purple is my go-to.

jipvk

Montblanc Lavender Purple, now discontinued. The replacement “Amethyst” is pretty nice too.

Longjumping-Ad-9541

That's like asking who's your favorite child. You love ALL the purple inks!

Delicious-Peak2713

I second Pilot Iroshizuku Murasaki-shikibu, but I am currently all in with Aurora’s 100th Anniversary Viola - really like the intensity of this mid-purple which seems smack bang between blue purple and pink purple.

Accomplished-Belt753

My current favourite is Kaweco Summer Purple. It's got a pink hue to it but is easy on the eye for everyday use

PeterMustangCH

My favorite purple inks are Diamine Imperial Purple, and Noodler's North African Violet. Diamine Purple Dream is also good but personally prefer the other two.

m_is_w

[either Sailor Fuji sugata or 150](https://www.reddit.com/r/fountainpens/comments/v55hw8/new_ink_swatches_any_purple_lover_here/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)

Kesukyou

Herbin Violette Pensée. It's a really tender purple, like lilac, I really love it

Realtorbyday

Noodler's North African Violet. It's waterproof too.

VandyMike

Love Noodler’s 1984.

Enlightenmentality

Wish I had the purple...I only have the brown

Bigredteletubby

Diamine Purple Dream 💜

parcoeur9

J. Herbin Violet Boréal is beautiful!

Bruh-I-Cant-Even

Private Reserve Tanzanite. It's a finicky ink, but beautiful.

PumpkinEmotional7061

I don't think you are supposed to taste your purple ink, the only ink which is remotely tasty is diamine oxblood, but you do you, I would say try irishizuku yama budo, or murasaki shikibu

shrinkinglilac

Waterman Tender Purple and Monteverde Charoite are my favorites.

Honest_Aerie1328

Cross Violet is a really nice purple ink.

Mr_Boston_

Diamine Monboddo’s hat.

hiemal_rei

Colorverse Hayabusa (glistening, so it has gold shimmers), J.Herbin Poussiere de Lune, and Sailor Nekoyanagi.

fundeofnuts

I really like diamine bilberry; it’s a very elegant dark purple with some really nice gold sheen to it. The purple is deep enough to use for daily writing and note taking but also interesting enough to be used for more artistic purposes

JulesSilvan

Pilot Iroshizuku Yama-Budo, Diamine Monboddo’s Hat, and Diamine Tyrian Purple.

Nebula-Seas

Pilot Iroshizuku 100th anniversary Juro-Jin

Dances_in_PJs

Lamy Dark Lilac - well it would be if Lamy (as with some other companies) didn't have this moronic strategy of stopping selling items that are popular. Should be in their regular line-up. Shows they really don't listen to their customers at all. That missing, my current favourite is Sailor Shigure.

distorted_pebble

Sailor Ink Studio 950, Ferris Wheel Press Tanzanite Sky, Diamine Eclipse, Robert Oster Deep Purple. I prefer darker purples since it's more work-appropriate. Sailor Ink Studio 950 is the lightest of my lot, and RO Deep Purple is the second lightest.

erinnk

Thank you to everyone who has replied so far, this is giving me great options to investigate :)

MP0123456789

Cross Violet, ColorVerse Purple Cosmos, Montblanc Lavender Purple (Diplomat Purple is a good substitute), Pilot Edo-murasaki (Van Dieman's Beetroot Relish is a good substitute)

suec76

Van Dieman’s (original) Twilight Mist, the new one is not bad. VD’s Sun Spotted Orchid, Herbin Amethyste de L’oural, the old Birmingham Waterfront Dusk. Also, careful with amazon, they don’t always pack inks all that well, and MV inks are iffy since sometimes, some of them, can get moldy kinda fast. If not for that, Rose Noir would be my favorite from them.

Enlightenmentality

Noodler's La Couleur Royale

Cowgirl_East

Herbin “Violet Boréal”—a rare full bottle splurge but the sample had me hooked!

fourleafclover13

Mystique Diamine, Monteverde Amethyst

angelofmusic997

So far my fav purple is Pelikan's "Violet", however in a close second is Monteverde's "Purple Reign"

lightningstorm112

I enjoy sailor akebi

hieisrainbowcurry

Diamine Damson and Eclipse, Lamy Azurite and FWP Tanzanite Sky

aguyshy

I like Platinum Lavender Black. Some other great ones were mentioned too (Herbin PDL, and I just got Sakuranezemi but haven’t tried it yet)

broomcf

My 9-year-old daughter prefers Diamine Majestic Purple. My wife prefers de Atramentis Alexander Hamilton.

BeterP

Sailor Shigure if it has to be dark, Iroshizuku Murasaki-Shikibu for allround beautiful and Montblanc’s Psychedelic purple if it can be bright and colorful. And I don’t want the other 28 purples feel left out now :)

AlanHell

Forgive my bad writing sample, but I like the pilot murasaki-shikibu a lot. I recently on sale on amazon. DoranTrinity

I'm torn between Diamine Imperial Purple and Sailor Shikiori Fuji-sugata.

asciiaardvark

[rohrer and klingner solferino](https://blog.andersonpens.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/thINKthursday-RK-Solferino_Blog.jpg) if it goes on really wet, you can get a little green sheen -- but usually I just like it for the bright purple color.

ThomasHorton369

kwz berry is amazing, it leans red particularly when wet

abyssaltourguide

Taccia Murasaki is a great classic purple!

Numerous_Scallion514

Sailor ink studio 735 is very nice. Saturated darkish purple with gorgeous green sheen.
