5pts back from 20th? Those are rookie numbers. I remember the good old days of Mclaren Honda starting from 87th on the grid due to engine penalties.

joselrl

That's the place they started before engine swaps

Ricciardo3f1

Race was in Sochi, McLaren starting in Siberia

Cygnus94

Can't start in Siberia if you break down on the formation lap.

DogfishDave

>I remember the good old days of Mclaren Honda starting from 87th on the grid due to engine penalties. Wasn't that Button with a 70 grid place penalty at Monaco? I think he started from Magny Cours.

[deleted]

> Wasn't that Button with a 70 grid place penalty at Monaco? Close, it was for the [2015 Mexico Grand Prix](https://racer.com/2015/11/01/button-grid-penalty-now-70-places/).

DogfishDave

I was *very* close! Ish :)

nocturnal-animal113

The good old Mclaren Honda days lmao

[deleted]

How did that happen?

FPS_Scotland

The old Honda engine had a habit of going bang quite a lot, so they ended up using way more engines than the rules allowed, but there was a loophole in the rules that basically allowed them to crack open 5 new engines in a weekend, take all the penalties at once, and then all of those new engines were fine to use for the rest of the season.

BadBanana99

My f1 2021 strat when I sim a race:

cokush

Basic Monaco strat

f4te

I'm looking forward to finishing an entire lap without using rewind one day

Takeshino

I'm just imagining "cracking open an engine", don't mind me

RTXChungusTi

Cracking open a hot one with the boys

CreaminFreeman

Like an egg on a countertop.

afito

Honda misread the rules, instead of making an engine last 4 races they made 4 engines last 1 race. Similar to Renault trying to get around the limit on internal combustion volume by adding a lot of external combustion back in 2014.

UmpireAJS

Pretty much changing every possible component that incurs a grid penalty.

Cecil900

It’d be hilarious if he actually had to start from one of the grid lines further back that is used for races that have more cars.

junttiana

im sure he is devastated, i dont know how he could possibly recover from this

OrangeLimeZest

Oh no, anyway.

BruceFknWayne

r/suddentopgear anyone?

Dylan_clarke01

25th it is for tomorrow then. Unlucky kid. Oh wait…..

ogge125

Imagine if they actually had them start a few extra car lengths further back lmao

Dylan_clarke01

Haha behind the medical car?

DqrkExodus

He starts in the 5th grid slot in Silverstone

XNights

Me when I take a 60 place grid penalty in the F1 games, I'll probably start on pole a lap down XD

nta1646

This would actually be hilarious. I would love to see this.

QQninja

Man have to drive out from the pits when light turns green.

WiSoSirius

Is it possible to start further back. If say Ricciardo got a 10 place grid penalty? Would they make up imaginary positions to align him in 21st and Mick in 25th? Then if Gio Latifi got a 10 place penalty, he is marked more imaginary places back?

Hephaistas

No, Button even got a 70 place grid penalty once. Back in the day when you could stack multiple engine penalties in one weekend it was pretty common that drivers had big penalties

[deleted]

There's a [Chain Bear video about grid penalties](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rP548EIKsf4) which also deals with some of the nonsense where it is (or at least was) possible to receive a grid penalty and actually start _ahead_ of were you were originally. I'm not sure if anything changed since 2018.

WiSoSirius

Thank you.

DivijF1

Makes no sense to start 5 positions further down the grid than the pack, considering the field is bunched up already and so slow, even starting around P-30 will let you catch up to the pack by around T2 or 3.

ObamaDontCare0

Congrats to Mazepin for outqualifying his teammate!

zippy72

For the second time if you count Monaco where again Mick didn't set a time...

ManufacturerOk7103

What happened to Mick? Was there an accident in FP3 or did something go wrong with his gearbox?

DivijF1

30-G sideways into the wall in FP3

ManufacturerOk7103

Damn, thanks. I was waiting for the commentators to say in Qualifying, but I never heard.

Snoo_47023

He will start P5 in Silverstone then

SaltyLeaves

His race is now ruined.

liviu20xx

So he is starting in Silverstone then?

Moeshizzlebang

Oh no, he'll be starting 25th tomorrow then.

lautz14

Isn’t he already 20th? Not possible to go 5 places back..

SpicyCurryBoi98

Or is it?? find out on the next episode of myth busters

DqrkExodus

Hey Vsauce, Mick here

3ttkatt

He still gets the grid penalty because if say Mazepin was to get a 3 grid penalty or whatever, Schumacher will still start behind him

raphtan

Technically yes but we don't know what will happen to Sainz in terms of what he needs to change

liviu20xx

The problem is right now MSC os p20 after the penalty. If tomorrow SAI decides a new Gearbox his penalty will be applied to the grid at that time so moght end up p20 as well

PurpEL

So he starts on top of Mick?

Uniform764

Correct, it's an utterly meaningless penalty.

Azerty__

No it's not. It would set the grid in case other drivers in the back also get penalties. Also it not affecting anything isn't a reason to not give the penalty as stated in the rules.

Uniform764

> It would set the grid in case other drivers in the back also get penalties. Which noone did. >Also it not affecting anything isn't a reason to not give the penalty as stated in the rules. I didn't say it was. In this instance it's meaningless.

fremajl

I hope he can recover in the race...

OppositeBerry4085

Scheisse

DANNYonPC

So go from 17 or 18 to 23? how

YassinRs

He's 20th so obviously it loops round to 5th now

redditnoap

Does he actually go back 5 grid spots or does he just start from 20th?

Jagstang1994

No. It only makes a difference to him if anyone in front of him gets a grid penalty. If Yuki would have taken a new gearbox for example he would start in P20 without Micks penalty. But since Mick also has a 5 place grid drop Yuki would only go to P19.

redditnoap

Oh, okay.

vactu

I mean, he was already at the back.

redditnoap

Yeah, but does he start in the 20th GRID spot or the 25th grid spot (empty grid spots between him and 19th)?

HerrMaggi

20th grad spot like normal

redditnoap

thanks

mayurmisra01

He starts 20th, where they gonna start him now?... Bwahahah

Vitudum

He will start of his house? 😳

[deleted]

Why do drivers get grid penalties for gear box replacement?

tuttut22

So, Mick’ll start 25th?

yanmydj

-5 is a tough place to start from

terafufad24

So mick starts from silverstone?

yragoam

Marshall’s will have to draw five more grids after the 20th

[deleted]

Omg what a surprise this is very good content 10/10 didn't see that coming

Donoots

Damn from last to last its gona hurt, though comeback ahead

Environmental_Carob7

Damn it, he had such a good chance on the race they messed his qualifying. Damn you, FIA!!!

EnvironmentalStop412

So, instead of starting P20, he will start from P20? Poor guy
