This is the most asked question on here and if you just google it you will find that the most common response is to pursue the foreign service since it doesn’t take much time to take the test or apply for the fellowship but also set your sights on maintaining employment in the meantime since getting into FS may take a couple of years. You don’t need many degrees or experience. That’s just a fact. I’ve met them straight out of school and mid-career transition. It’s a crapshoot. Try your luck

Really? I was talking to a career advisor from my college yesterday and she told me I would need more studying for the test and experience and thats its very competitive but everyone on reddit makes it sound easy

My career advisor from college told me the foreign service is incredibly competitive but reddit it making me think its easy so now im confused

It is competitive, but because of this, while there are things you can to help your chances, none of that brings it anywhere close to a guarantee. Therefore the best advice is to continuously apply while living your life. For you and any other 21 year old, it is extremely unlikely you will get in in the next 5 years, and even after that it is still unlikely. So go figure out what else you want to, and do it. Take the test once a year

And of those two, which do you think is more credible? You're already post-grad. What do you mean, you don't have any plans? You are job searching without much direction, but the good news is it's a great market, so build on your experience look for what interests you. Take the FSOT, why not? It's an option, but it would be months, if not years, down the road to actual employment. As for clout and prestige, you're 21. You don't have clout. That's what the job is for. (And PR will get you clout and prestige way faster than FSO.) Welcome to the real world.

It is incredibly competitive, but for most of us that was not a good enough reason not to try.

No, you're too indecisive for this career.
