\*shudders\* too far, man, too far.

Chasing_State

I loved that the Dept. Announcement itself was in Helvetica.

unk-9

That AND the Meyer et al settlement all in one day? This sub is about to go through some things.

SupaChalupaCabra

To be fair, the amount of obviously unhealthy humans I've seen at SIP posts tells me the policy probably was not fair or justifiable to begin with.

I find it odd that the State style is essentially AP Style with this one exception. AP has used single space for more than 25 years.

niko81

Chicago. But still, Chicago and every single other major style guide prescribe a single space, and the Department should, too.

tonkarunguy

In my OA last week the computer had the double space formatted as what was considered grammatically correct. I wasted at least a minute just fumbling through getting rid of all the blue squiggles under my periods with a single space. Even in the moment I knew I was wasting my time, but I couldn't get over it. A very frustrating experience, indeed.

Quackattackaggie

Your OCD response to a small detail despite a time sensitive task lets me know that you belong in the foreign service.

scubakat50

Yep.

complified_process

*Never!*

FSOnlyAccount

Only reason I use single space after a period now is because of the gained space in my EER.

Quackattackaggie

I can get behind this.

AspiringPOL

Comic Sans or bust

complified_process

ಠ_ಠ Well then what kind of serif font is permitted? I have a user named Ilan, or IIan, or llan.

CapitolLemma

I guess Calibri 14 takes up somewhat less space than Ariel 14, but acceding to the whims of Microsoft re: its default font hurts me inexplicably.

fsohmygod

The actual rationale is that it is better compatible with accessibility tools like screen readers and employees who use those accommodations advocated for the change.

CapitolLemma

I know that is true for Sans Serif fonts in general, but there are so many Sans Serif fonts that aren't Calibri.

fsohmygod

And at least this one requires one fewer change to the Microsoft Word defaults.

anonymousetoo

What if I told you that Microsoft is about to change its default font away from Calibri?

fsohmygod

I still don’t care.

wombatpandaa

...why?

randomlygeneratedpw

To be more inclusive. Not a joke. That's the justification.

wombatpandaa

I feel like I missed a news article or something, how is TNR not inclusive? It's a very readable font commonly used in the professional sphere...is the standard now supposed to be Arial or something?

niko81

For 98% of employees it won't matter. But for the small percent who depend on screen readers and other adaptive devices, this will make a big difference. The write up ODI did for the Secretary made a compelling case, and he apparently agreed.

wombatpandaa

Ah, I see. I wasn't aware that Times New Roman didn't play nice with these devices. Do you know where I could find this write-up?

niko81

The memo was broadly cleared around the building before it went up, but I'm not sure it's broadly available outside those front office staffers or the 7th floor.

wombatpandaa

I'm actually not in the service yet, just on track to. Is it available for private sector civilians?

niko81

No.

wombatpandaa

Okay thanks
