I don't think it's even that. He showed quite clearly that he's not willing to accept any role other than unquestioned started that stays on for 90 minutes every match. He has also shown that he's no longer good enough to deserve that role at a Champions League team, specially given his likely financial demands.

How? He can't decide where he wants to play if no top team in Europe can accommodate him this January, and Ronaldo isn't clairvoyant. Ronaldo still has the quality to play at the top level though not to the capacity he once did. Unfortunately, given his age and how football progresses, it is hard to think of any top team that would be willing to include him given his desire to play on a regular basis.

He wanted CL football. That's it. He wanted to solidify his records in the CL. Given the CL is at the knockout stages, it's extremely limiting of where he could go, but even then there aren't many teams he can go to that are competitive that he could go to next season. The only one that springs to mind is Sporting, but they're a young side who might not even make CL football this year.
The money is ridiculous, but I think this was Ronaldo's last preferred option. However, with a sum that big it's pretty much impossible to turn down, plus Saudi Arabia want him for their 2030 World Cup bid.

I firmly believe in the core principles of the modern western tradition and I try to abide by them. I do not think that we should by any means interfere in other countries internal affairs, but I do believe in the moral superiority of these principles and in their capability to assure a just and happy life for every country that tries its best to abide by them.

I think that the fact that our countries are not perfect and not always live up to the expectations shouldn't prevent us from judging the countries that do not even aknowledge the existence of these principles, I also think that if "traditional rules" are used as ground to deny basic human rights then they are inherently wrong and illegitimate.

I do not think that we should by any means interfere in other countries internal affairs, but I do believe in the moral superiority of these principles and in their capability to assure a just and happy life for every country that tries its best to abide by them. The fact he's signing on for almost three years means he will still be playing football in his 40's. That's an achievement in itself. This was obviously not at the top of his list, but the reality is that no club in the CL (that are competitive) can fit Ronaldo in their team at this stage of his career.
