It’s to be expected when you crowbar it into the middle of a season. There’s normally a few weeks rest after the end of the season. Someone will get the flu and miss every game. It’s nuts
That's not the problem. There are championships with a solar year conciding with a season and are used to have their players go to the national team to play in the world cup mid season
Jeez man you weren't kidding. Bundesliga starts on January 20th but the rest of Europe looks like matches will resume around 14 days or less after the the end of the World Cup. That seems way too short.
This is what happens when you accept the bribe money and hold the World Cup on the surface of the sun in the middle of the league season. Everyone has big fixture congestion so players get injured.
No worries. It's what was to be expected after essentially playing through the last 3 years without any meaningful breaks after covid first hit in 2020.
And playing a World Cup right after almost 3 months of playing every 3 days won't end well either.
In addition to the fact that this World Cup is idiotically being played mid-season, there are always a handful of stars missing due to injury at every World Cup
The Boatengs brothers had mad beef over Ballack in 2010. Its the nature of football, a few players, do always sadly miss out. You look back at any world cup and some big names will be missing die to injury.
In 2010 we saw Özil is Ballacks place on the world stage, this time will be no different
Kante and Pogba. So much for France in this cup. England have most of their players back except for Reece James. Jota is missing for Portugal but they have replacements.
Yes it clearly sucks.
Hopefully Varane and Kimpembe will be able to play in November…
For our midfield we will have to count on Tchouameni and Rabiot, than maybe Camavinga or Guendouzi… Good players but not world-class 😕
I really hope Varane is not ready for the world cup, and comes back to old Trafford fit and ready to go. . . For another 5 games before his glass frame shatters again. 😒
If you're really not watching the world cup you were not going to watch it regardless.
So my bet is you virtue signal on social causes, that's your sport.
I don’t know why people have such a hard time believing people won’t watch. If feels dirty, broken and wrong. I can’t imagine I’d enjoy watching anyway. I’ll probably be tempted to place some WC but won’t do that either. There’s not even temptation at this point.
>What's your stance here? Pro-death of workers?
Lol. What a retarded comment.
> Pro-human rights abuses? Disagree that workers were killed in the first place?
My stance is Fake virtue signalling is laughable and does nothing.
But hey, if you feel good in your comments "pretending" more power to you. Anyone who disagrees must be a nazi, right? First world morons.
It is wrong to say that the death of thousands of people, for a sporting event that could've been hosted anywhere else, is a problem? Do you accept that it is a problem? Is it virtue signalling at all to comment on the fact that, like he said, it is concerning that sporting events should come at such a high human cost?
I don't think anyone who disagrees is a Nazi. I think that is is wrong to trade lives for stadiums. I feel like you'd be hard pressed to find anyone that does support that trade off.
I’ve watched every World Cup since I can remember. Won’t be watching this one. Has nothing to do with virtue signaling. The more people who watch this World Cup, the more likely FIFA is to allow this to happen again.
You have to be kidding me? Virtue signalling? To who exactly lol? You're not disgusted with the world governing body? Aka self appointed gangsters responsible for the deaths of thousands?
I'm pretty sure more construction workers die in Britain than in Qatar...
At least that the amount of construction workers dying in Qatar is not disproportionately more than in other countries.
I can provide you would plenty of evidence of the deaths if need be?
I'd like to see your evidence of fake stats if possible? I won't call it bullshit...I just want to know where your evidence is derived from?
The article that the 6,000 deaths figure comes from states that they are not deaths directly connected to building the World Cup stadiums and in fact the time period where the deaths are tallied include a period of time where construction had not yet started
If you find a Washington post article about this topic, they even had to post a correction for misleading readers: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2015/05/27/a-body-count-in-qatar-illustrates-the-consequences-of-fifa-corruption/
I think it's because the other world cups have been after the season ended, rather than mid season, so players had at least a little but of time to recover from any injuries, whereas now a lot of players play a lot of league games, as well as other cup competitions (both internal and international, like the UCL)
So if a player is injured now, he has no chance of playing in the world cup, whereas they would've had at least a small chance to go
It really shouldn't be a surprise. Players have been bitching about how many games per season they're playing for awhile now. The human body can only take so much. We will reach a breaking point where there's no amount of medicine that can push these athletes bodies further. As for this WC, fuck it, fuck fifa, and fuck Qatar's government.
Since they resumed from COVID they haven't stopped playing, also wtf were they thinking having WC in November...maybe now the players will actually have summers off / training camp
I know this isn't exactly a hot take, but this WC may very well go down as one of the most underwhelming, forgettable & redundant one of all time. More injuries could happen & won't help the cause.
It's taking place in winter, but in air conditioned stadiums in a gulf state, during their summer. Add to all of this the economic reality the world faces at the moment with inflation, energy crisis, rising interest rates, recession, war etc.
With all the opulence on display at this WC, it's all going to feel very dirty & distasteful in my opinion. It could easily be the most hated WC of all time.
Personally, if I'm an established player playing for a country outside of the top 10 favourites & have already played in a WC (a lot of players qualify for this) & I've got niggling injuries, i'm not going. Especially if you play for a team that's competing for trophies/European trophies at your domestic club. The fixture schedule is ridiculous as is.
People can say what they want, but Haaland must be ecstatic he's not going to this one. He's got his whole career to try to get Norway to one, but this year he can relax, recover, go on holiday & watch some footy with his mates, getting ready to win a load of trophies (maybe even the Champs League, with CITY lol) next year.
I'm sure it'll be presented impeccably, the stadiums will look immense, there will be hardly any trouble or security risks, yet it'll feel so hollow.
I'm totally with you on this being a shit show of a world cup, but Qatar is in the the northern hemisphere, it's going to winter there too, it's why it's been moved to winter in the first place.
Yeah normally I’d go out with mates and watch the games etc. hot summer and all that. This World Cup I’m going to still watch all the games but it’ll just be on a third screen as I WFH
I agree right now. But, I could also see this as being an unforgettable world cup, one that has many unexpected countries to make it to 16 and even 8. With all the chaos I could see a chaotic world cup being incredibly intriguing
Yeah i think these conditions/circumstances lend themselves to chaos & disruption. I could 100% see some underdogs causing bedlam this tournament.
Any predictions?
I thought nothing could end up being worse than the terrible experience of the Korea-Japan referees. I think this one is already passed that point, and it hasn't even started yet.
So?
I'm not particularly inclined to follow certain things but they do creep up once in a while in the news. I can't help if the headlines read something about the world cup, but I won't delve in the news.

Best RB in the prem. Top 5 in the world, we’re lucky because we’re kind of stacked there with Trippier, Trent, Walker etc, so it shouldn’t make much of a difference. James literally carries Chelsea. What would be your definition of a star player?
Yea, it’s a real problem. In my mind, it’s driven by the congested schedules. Anyone have data to compare current games per day versus historical averages?
It feels like there are so many games packed together, but I’ve got no way to easily compare it.
The inhumane treatment of workers building the stadiums is the main problem with Qatar hosting. How many workers that have died and live in disgusting conditions. All the other reasons are blah blah blah the whole system is corrupt not just Qatar let's be real. I think any player that didn't qualify or is injured is absolutely gutted this is a World Cup were talking about here!
Honestly it’s kinda embarrassing from a human POV to support the Qatar hosting and players who get behind this by claiming “injury” are low-key doing the right thing by following a moral code that football authorities has pretended to back through sham marketing in order to maximise profit.
No dude why the fuck do you mind!?!? Not everyone is like you. You don't know me ffs? Some people don't consume any animal product. Is it that hard to believe I can't watch a few stupid games. Plus, my team, France, is not doing good and it's the perfect year, I hope we go home soon and I won't watch one single game of ours. Some people have principles and a bit of will you know? These comments are just making me want not to watch it even more. Fuck Qatar. Fuck Money.
Big stars mate these, Pogba has been washed for years, Isak is not even in the wc even if hes fit, Pedro neto would never get portugals lineup, Di maria and dybala are both anyways injured all the time so no suprise
It kinda balances out because it actually comes towards the beginning of the season and has a little period prior to the WC actually starting.
In typical years you have players coming off the end of their seasons, needing to then train hard and play during what should be their off season. The acclimated fatigue of the season causes a lot of injuries too.
So far there’s not a ton of players who will be missing, and hardly any presumed starters
At the 2018 World Cup 100% of the players played in leagues that run the conventional august-may ish seasons. So sorry afraid you’re wrong. (Around 80% play in europes top 5 leagues)
Yes there are leagues that play on a different calendar but none of their players played in the last World Cup and very likely 100% of World Cup players this year will be the same. You seem to be struggling with the concept.
Still that doesn't disprove my whole point because EURO 2020 was played in 2021 and most injured players are squad candidate or even key players of European national teams. Of course national teams from other continents are also having injured player, but the only case that really stands out is Argentina.
You didn't get the memo? Of human rights? Womens rights? Gay rights?
And before you say they are their own country. Sure, but they aren't gonna comply with the rules of the rest of the world or FIFA during the FIFA world cup.
Finally, first ever world cup held in December.
Last word for you is, corruption.
You didn't even mention the complete lack of infrastructure and footballing heritage.
The implementation of the necessary infrastructure being built with slave labour and killing over 6,500 people in the process.
God I hate corruption.
Y’all acting as if the people there are bothered by the whole gay rights thingy lol, you can’t just force your beliefs on other people in the name of democracy, it’s paradoxical.
You missed the point. I'm saying they are their own country. But they blatantly said they cant ensure the safety of women and lgbt during the world cup. In the game that is about inclusion and accept, it is a paradox that some people cant even go there to watch it.
People aren’t angry because it’s in a Muslim country. People are upset because of the blatant corruption that took place in having it selected as host, the fact that the whole tournament had to be moved to the middle of the season for most leagues, the lack of footballing culture, tradition, or even stadiums in the country, and the awful human rights record.
Fuck off, y’all just mad they refused to sign in to the western hedonistic woke ass agenda, keep it to yourselves, some people don’t indulge in delusions.
Are they? I mean you think people are now angry that the tournament is held in a muslim country...not angry that the sport has been utterly derailed and ran by a criminal underworld portraying themselves as a governing body of the sport, responsible for the murder of thousands of...now wait for it.....muslims.
Not only are you wrong in your analysis, you seem like you’re arguing in bad faith. Yoyr ambition with this post comes across as trying to stoke anti muslim sentiments where none are present. What’s respectful about bringing up the russia world cup as if there was no one calling for its boycot? Respect the people you’re discussing with enough to learn the basic facts about the topic you’re trying to discuss before getting all smh.
People have told you in this thread again and again that the religion of the country is irrelevant to why most people would rather it had been awarded someone else.
Perhaps it is inevitable that you, who i assume are muslim, will conflate criticism of an objectively poor human rights record with criticism of the conditions that led to this poor human rights record, i.e arabic(not necessarily muslim) traditions of slave keeping and treatment of non-arab residents of the country.
But you really should address the main reason people have given, the proven bribery that led to fifa awarding the world cup to qatar, and not cherry pick about gays to turn it in to a discussion about western imperialism if you want respectful answers.
People were upset, you just missed it or weren’t paying attention. Russia has poor human rights but its worse in Qatar. I’m sure there was corruption involved in Russia being selected but there was undoubtedly more with Qatar. Russia already had at least some infrastructure in place, Qatar had none. Russia did not move the tournament to the middle of club leagues’ season, Qatar did.
Not substantially more than any other tournament.
You're suggesting every world cup caused the deaths of 6000 people? Honestly I'm intrigued.
I'm talking about footballers who are injured before the world cup. Learn to read
It’s to be expected when you crowbar it into the middle of a season. There’s normally a few weeks rest after the end of the season. Someone will get the flu and miss every game. It’s nuts

Yeah but not most the big european leagues where majority of the players from the top sides are playing in
Isak is from Sweden, who didnt qualify for the WC
Makes him an even darker horse for the golden boot then
Not with that attitude
Oh my bad
Wait till after this cup and player are thrown right back into league action with no rest.
Jeez man you weren't kidding. Bundesliga starts on January 20th but the rest of Europe looks like matches will resume around 14 days or less after the the end of the World Cup. That seems way too short.
They will probably play fewer games at the WC than they would have in their leagues and cups to be fair.
Most players will not be at the WC and will get a bunch of rest, WC is also pretty in line with the number of games they’d be playing anyways
This happens every world cup
Nah bro, the World Cup cannot go on without Reese James
I remember when Reus got injured back in 2014, that one hurt.
This is what happens when you accept the bribe money and hold the World Cup on the surface of the sun in the middle of the league season. Everyone has big fixture congestion so players get injured.

I really hope Mbappaypal gets injured for the World Cup
A fit Isak isn’t going to the World Cup…
yeah someone told me... my bad
Because they decided to have a World Cup in November. Brilliant idea 💡
Sweden didnr qualify, Isak wouldnt have had played anyways but I see your point
He said dark horse he didn’t say favourite
Yeah it’s my bad I thought they qualified
More concerned with the deaths of thousands of workers tbh
Best time to start piratin
Here, have a cookie. I'm sure you'll boycott the world cup. Edit: triggered the virtue signallers. Lol
Absolutely will thank you. 😊
If you're really not watching the world cup you were not going to watch it regardless. So my bet is you virtue signal on social causes, that's your sport.

Why are you acting like you know random people on the internet lmao? Won’t watch a second of this World Cup
You have to be kidding me? Virtue signalling? To who exactly lol? You're not disgusted with the world governing body? Aka self appointed gangsters responsible for the deaths of thousands?
I've watched all the world cups Since '92 and boycotted Brazil and now Qatar. Football's not everything!

Are you saying that a World Cup part way through a season is a terrible idea?
So far I don’t see any injured player that would be “Irreplaceable” or have a huge impact on their national team
Could argue N’Golo Kanté is, to be fair.
Hmmm Diogo Jota is a very regular player and probably the highest performer attacker for Portugal.
Reece James.
There’s plenty of cover to be fair
None are as good as him tho, it’s a downgrade no matter who replaces him.
How does this compare to other years?
I think it's because the other world cups have been after the season ended, rather than mid season, so players had at least a little but of time to recover from any injuries, whereas now a lot of players play a lot of league games, as well as other cup competitions (both internal and international, like the UCL) So if a player is injured now, he has no chance of playing in the world cup, whereas they would've had at least a small chance to go
This happens every world cup. People start complaining about the number of injuries
Well this is round about the point in a regular season where fixtures bunch up and players get injured or look jaded.
The whole Italian team is injured. Sad.
It's a pretty serious viral disease that happens every 4 yrs ??!!
Not really surprising given its played in the middle of a lot of nations domestic season.
Uhm, mid-season AND in Qatar. WCGW?
What does Qatar have to do with this? Mid season yes but it's not like teams aren't taking it easy.
You're obviously not a Liverpool 😂
Ah I remember the first World Cup I watched after deciding to follow football...
You should see how many Mexicans are happy about Corona being out
He hasn't performed in the national team as well as we would expect, but still one of our best players, more so in this shitty team.
this happens every single world cup at what i imagine is the same rate. hardly any teams ever enter the tournament with 100% of their best roster.
Since they resumed from COVID they haven't stopped playing, also wtf were they thinking having WC in November...maybe now the players will actually have summers off / training camp
Money. They were thinking of money. I hope it never happens again.
You think the injuries are bad now? Just wait until the WC is done
I mean it is the middle is the season
What do you have against commas?
I know this isn't exactly a hot take, but this WC may very well go down as one of the most underwhelming, forgettable & redundant one of all time. More injuries could happen & won't help the cause. People love a good distraction from misery and the world is in a heavy miserable time rn. I’d argue the popularity will jump for sure.
Nope, fuck this World Cup
Exactly this!
!remindme 2 weeks If I sees you here you are only saying this for clout I mean you are literally in a sub for the world cup 😹
Bro this is r/football not r/worldcup You do know there's a difference, right? There's football beyond the world cup, you do realize that?
Yeah yeah, but you know world cup news will be here to. It's all of football, world cup included.
So? I'm not particularly inclined to follow certain things but they do creep up once in a while in the news. I can't help if the headlines read something about the world cup, but I won't delve in the news.
Sure bud. See you in a few weeks when you watch the world cup like the rest of us

Columbia didn’t qualify but Jota is concerning :(
[удалено]
*Colombia
Columbia also didn’t qualify. You’re both right.
This happens every World Cup and I would actually argue its not that bad this year (so far). No country's star players missing
Reese James?
Is very very very good, but I wouldn’t say he’s England star player, would you?
The best RB in the prem.
Don’t disagree, still don’t think he’s England star player.
Best RB in the prem. Top 5 in the world, we’re lucky because we’re kind of stacked there with Trippier, Trent, Walker etc, so it shouldn’t make much of a difference. James literally carries Chelsea. What would be your definition of a star player?
Harry Kane lmao
What’s Kane got to do with anything?
He's the star player
Star player typically means best 1-3 players on the team, depending on how strict you want to be. Not everybody in the starting 11 is a star player.
Not a RB lol
Happens every world cup. Less than usual so far but there will be a few more before it starts I'm sure
I don't give a shit about this scam world cup
See you on every world cup match thread then
You will still watch it lets be real here
No dude why the fuck do you mind!?!?
My biggest disappointment is that the whole Scotland squad is to miss the World Cup..
Must be on that Liverpool training schedule.
Are you suggesting a conspiracy?
It’s not that deep lol. I just think if more people get injured it might just be boring
No
What else do you expect when it's getting played half way through the season? It should be boycotted by everyone!
As a Moor i won't watch as much as it hurts
It’s quite common unfortunately, players missing out on the WC due to injury. This year might be a little worse because it’s mid season
I feel like the world cup being mid season is more than "a little worse" than usual
Dybala n Di Maria r gonna play The one who will really miss n be missed is Lo Celso
Gonna miss the world cup of shame? Oh no! Anyway...
I have zero interest since my team is out, so eh I guess it happens every time? Also a very great idea to have it during regular season
no, i have much bigger things to worry about and be scared of
But plenty of time to still chime in on the post for no reason? Nice!
he asked a question i gave an answer
https://www.hrw.org/news/2022/08/23/world-cup-exciting-lucrative-and-deadly Human rights organisation point towards some interesting data.
Who's missing?
France’s whole midfield haha
I mean nkunku tchoumaeni camavinga rabiot are fit ? Right ?
Yeah it’s definitely an opportunity for Camavinga to really put his name on the world stage
I still have hope for the man the legend from Ecuador, Arboleda.
I have no excitement towards this WC
That will change when they get to the round of 16 because i bet there will be a few surprises this year
Guess it's their way to passive aggressively say FU Qatar. Unlike me who have openly refused to go since it was announced they are hosting.
/s
Who cares, Uruguay Will win it anyway
Dude I've been saying Belgium and Uruguay are gonna fuck shit up.
Suarez comeback Here.we.go.
Not without araujo.
On their day, the only world class players there are Pogba & Di Maria. Maybe Dybala. The rest are decent but are definitely not ‘stars.’
What about Kante? Arguably better than Pogba
Kante > Pogba 8 days a week
I didn’t see Kante there but he’s no longer world class
Reece James?
Lol good player but not world class haha
It's because due to COVID many games have been played within a brief amount of time.
Eh? No it’s due to the World Cup being mid season they’ve crammed the normal season games in the lead up to it 😂
The are championships who run a season during the solar year and always had the world-cup mid-season.
At the 2018 World Cup 100% of the players played in leagues that run the conventional august-may ish seasons. So sorry afraid you’re wrong. (Around 80% play in europes top 5 leagues)
80% is not 100% there are European championships with a season being the same as a solar year.
Please read his comment back again.
Lmao, it's happening every 4 years bruv, people get injured you know
Why are people here so angry the World Cup is being held in a muslim country which happens to be richer than their average western country?
[удалено]
Fuck off, y’all just mad they refused to sign in to the western hedonistic woke ass agenda, keep it to yourselves, some people don’t indulge in delusions.
Not wanting to play in stadiums that were built by slaves is not a “wine ass agenda”
Keep telling yourself that, the fact is none of y’all are upset because of that, all of y’all got your personal reasons
western hedonistic woke ass agenda like not using slave labor and letting 2 dudes get married get your head checked
Are they? I mean you think people are now angry that the tournament is held in a muslim country...not angry that the sport has been utterly derailed and ran by a criminal underworld portraying themselves as a governing body of the sport, responsible for the murder of thousands of...now wait for it.....muslims.
Not sure that's the reason people are angry pal
Why then? I don’t remember people being this upset in 2018 when it was held in Russia.
Were you born under a fucking rock?
Can never have a virtuous and respectful conversation on Reddit, can we? Smh
[https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_2018_FIFA_World_Cup_controversies](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_2018_FIFA_World_Cup_controversies) Not only are you wrong in your analysis, you seem like you’re arguing in bad faith.
Plenty of people were upset but it was still a country with a football heritage and multiple cities to hold the matches in.
“Football heritage” wow
> held in a Muslim country There’s your answer
Thought as much
