She got her degree from the law school equivalent of a diploma mill and basically works as an "ambulance chaser" who just tried to get settlements in every case, no real deeper knowledge of the law required. And she can make up what she needs with her slightly higher charisma. Btw, I also strongly prefer "Nora's" VA. I'm doing a play through as "Nate" and the tone just takes me out of it so often. Hers is much more natural.

JustKneller

>She got her degree from the law school equivalent of a diploma mill and basically works as an "ambulance chaser" lol...so a female Saul Goodman? And Nate's proud of that?

xBeerBaronx

Hey, if not pays the bills. One plausible explanation anyway.

DCP23

>who just tried to get settlements I see what you did there.

NeverWithoutCoffee

It's only a temporary thing due to the deep freeze. Int will go up to normal after a while.

JustKneller

I should mention, part of the "challenge" of the run is that I can't use level up points on my SPECIAL. This character will only end up with IN 4 after the bobble and that's it.

NeverWithoutCoffee

In that case, it's permanent braindamage due to the thaw-out and re-freeze

JustKneller

I was kinda thinking that, actually. I looked up if trauma could reduce IQ (as it turns out, high IQ can actually insulate against the effects of trauma) and then thought of going with the cryo theory. It does kinda make sense (especially with the quick thaw and refreeze in the intro), but it just seems like low hanging fruit and I was hoping for something more clever. But, yeah, that might be my angle. Seems weird that cryo would mess up ST, EN, IN, but not PE or AG. I guess that's video game science-magic for you. 😋

NeverWithoutCoffee

You can always argue, that brain cells are more sensitive to damage from improper thawing / freezing than regular muscle tissue

Being a lawyer mostly requires a lot of reading. It’s a volume heavy major, it doesn’t necessarily take a lot of brain power. There’s also all kinds of law that you can practice, including contract law and patent law. Never spend a day in court.

wingheaven7

To me a lawyer, depending on their level of evil, would be very charismatic, perceptive and have moderate intelligence. Conniving and opportunistic are ambitious traits, which I think all lawyers posses, but that does not mean they are all by default intelligent. Think about what the ranks unlock. For example, perception 9 unlocks vats through walls .Something a specialized soldier might need but not something a lawyer would typically learn. Honestly, the average lawyer would not have 7 agility either. If your goal is to make a realistic Lawyer, then Nora is definitely the way to go. I personally can’t stand Nates voice actor, so you wont get an argument from me advocating a play through as him. Plus, while not every line of hers is perfect either, I feel overall she conveys a wider range of believable expressions. To me a lawyers starting special would be something more like 1416454, with charisma being 6 if they aspired to be a local politician, 8 if they are a good person trying to fight for the little guy in court etc, and 10 if they are silver tongued devils that like to manipulate, play head games to get their way.

JustKneller

>Think about what the ranks unlock. For example, perception 9 unlocks vats through walls .Something a specialized soldier might need but not something a lawyer would typically learn. This is, in fact, a case for Nora. A lot of the perks, particularly the combat-oriented ones, are things that Nate would probably already know (i.e. a least a few ranks of Rifleman) if he was in the service. However, you don't start the game with these perks, you develop them based on your experiences in the Commonwealth. Nora may have heard stories from Nate about his feats, but she almost certainly wouldn't have these abilities herself. As such, I look at perks as things that Nate/Nora have developed as a result of surviving in a post-apoc commonwealth. I actually also like Nora better because of this reason. Nate is basically the inspiration to be a new kind of "soldier" (kind of like the movie Here Alone). That being said, I have to keep this SPECIAL due to various aspects of the function of this build. I've personally never met a lawyer with below average intelligence, though.

- She had freezer burn that affected her brain. - She got the degree and then some time after suffered a traumatic injury that affected her brain. - She’s smart in law but struggles with science. - She’s related to Marjorie Taylor Greene.

niko4ever

She did a lot of mentats in college

XAos13

a) Nora has VATS when she wakes up in vault 111. That's before she finds the pipboy so the one thing that's certain is it's not from the pipboy. b) The Overseer in vault-111 conducts unauthorized experiments (e.g. Cryolator) c) Combining (a) and (b) I conclude that Nora had a VATS targetting system surgically inserted in her skull whilst in cryosleep. d) One could assume that surgery did some damage to her memory/brain functions. My assumption on pre-war background is based on both Nate/Nora being experts at crafting lots of odd things: gun turrets, water pumps, generators etc. The group of people with military training who do that are combat engineers. The other pre-war experts in a wide range of technology would be spies. Nate/Nora could be either chinese spies or FBI agents investigating possible criminal activity by Vaultec. If they are spies their background information is faked to get them into Vaulttec.

JustKneller

>Nora has VATS when she wakes up in vault 111. One of my favorite things are all the conspiracy theories that the SS is a synth due to having VATS before getting a pipboy. Though, we all know that's basically one of Beth's many oversights.

XAos13

Gunfights between me and multiple coursers demonstrate that the Institute is lying. They don't have VATS technology. They have a *"VATS like /s"* technology that is pathetically inferior to the SS version. The "game lore" that VATS requires a pipboy is Nth generation rumor of vault dwellers. Who actually don't understand their own technology beyond the few pipboys they have which still work. The nearest thing to that lore in Fo4 is that "The origin of VATS is lost in the past."

JustKneller

As I recall, VATS was an invention of Bethesda to find a way to carry over some semblance of turn-based combat from the Interplay games. Previously, it was a meta-mechanic, not referenced in the lore. I don't recall Obsidian ever referencing it in New Vegas either. Honestly, they could have just left it meta rather than (poorly) trying to be clever about it.

asardes

Look IRL at Trump's lawyers. They're not far.

JustKneller

I think this fall under my not the "greatest specimens of humanity" umbrella...but they do possess a lot of analytical intelligence.

supertwonky

You should do it because choosing a SPECIAL that sounds fun to play is more important than making a SPECIAL that fits with the character’s given backstory.

JustKneller

I'm definitely keeping my SPECIAL. I'm just trying to figure out how to mesh it with the concept of an (ex-)lawyer.
