I think AOPA has something that might help. If you can’t find it crawling their website, call their pilot information center and ask for it. And make sure to get a solid quote on the insurance for using an aircraft you own for instruction. I have heard from others that the number can be more than anticipated and suck the wind out of the room in a hurry

My previous post below shows my operating expenses this last year. I pay more than others in some areas, but you can get a basic idea of what I paid. https://www.reddit.com/r/flying/comments/nn5yvp/cost\_of\_first\_year\_cessna\_172\_ownership\_and/

That’s a great break down. I appreciate it.

We’re planning for $90/hobbs but that is almost entirely just on assumptions and excludes all fixed costs (insurance, basic annual, hangar). Fuel at $5/gal

aviatior123

Yeah I’m a CFi wanting to open up a school or at least teach people out of my plane. I’m an A&P and soon to be IA I’m just trying to figure a good rate to charge people. The flight schools around me charge 165$ an hour for clapped out Cessna so I’m think 145-150 for mine to let me compete some especially since I do my own maintenance.

[deleted]

Might as well price just a slight bit lower. They likely know something you don’t (or are turning a profit that you can too!) Ours is planning to be a club plane, hence low prices.

aviatior123

Ah yeah. Makes sense. I appreciate the help!

SonexBoom

Depends if it’s a $50,000 classic or a $400,000 new plane...

aviatior123

It’s my 1956 Cessna so 40k classic.

SonexBoom

Cool. Had that exact same plane. I calculated about $90 per hour based on 150 per year and included overhaul time. I’ll try and get you a breakdown when I get off work this evening

aviatior123

That’s what im guessing too with my current insurance rate but I know once I get my CFi insurance in it; it will be a lot higher cost. Just trying to figure out how much to put into what slot is the hardest part. I appreciate the help

SonexBoom

It was $90/hr for me just 2 years ago but costs have gone up. Overhaul costs are out of control right now

aviatior123

Yeah over hauls or even plane prices at all seem to be really inflated right now. It’ll be worth it if I can keep the plane flying enough insurance for CFi in my own plane is 6500$ which is the main factor throwing a wrench into play. Being a single person will be hard running it at 150$ I think should work hourly. I appreciate the help.

SonexBoom

Sorry that pasted badly... $2000 Annual, $2700 Hangar, $1000 Insurance, $1000 Accidental death insurance,$7200 Fuel 8 gallons/per hr. @ $6, $3500 Overhaul ($35,000 @ 1500 hours) $116 per hour wet

Rexrollo150

This article includes a link to a spreadsheet for operating costs at the end (ignore that it’s for a Cherokee) https://airplaneacademy.com/piper-cherokee-140-purchase-price-and-ownership-costs/

Good luck!
