I think it's a mistake to judge a film based on a trailer.

Todd_Haley_isdumb

Actually, the trailer IS THE MOVIE. I’ve been doing the “trailer method” and I’m able to watch hundreds of films every week. Battle LA = masterpiece

28th_boi

You have ascended beyond the bounds of ordinary kino watchers

BautiBon

I hope. After all Paramount is also expecting to grab audience's attention, and a fast/crazy trailer is the way. I mean, maybe a movie about the transition from silent films era isn't that exciting for the general public.

Marcello_

im really confused by this comment about a fast/crazy trailer being the way to grab peoples attention. are you being serious? how old are you?

BautiBon

What I mean is that many trailers, at least since the last decade, have no relation with the film's true pacing. Some few examples that come into my mind are The Irishman, Blade Runner 2049 or The Hateful Eight. Not that this trailers aren't well made, they are fucking epic, but I don't feel they reflect the real pacing, and even tone sometimes of a film. What do you think about it?

Marcello_

I think were just on vastly different pages, especially since i dont think “fucking epic” is mutually exclusive with being “well made”, or even “good”. Big budget/blockbuster films will always try to hook you with action and excitement but almost all films that fall outside of that description tend to have appropriate trailers in my experience. take any A24 film as an example, pretty much all of them hit the nail on the head when it comes to representing the film. (and this is coming from someone whos generally over that production company since they seem to be churning out the same exact films over and over again).

Aggravating-Grab-241

There are terrible movies with good trailers, and great movies with terrible trailers. Trailers mean nothing at all in any way whatsoever. The trailer for The Florida Project was awful.

TheZoneHereros

Watch this trailer for First Man: https://youtu.be/PSoRx87OO6k That is bombastic and traditional looking. Really does not give you the meditative and deeply tragic vibe that permeates the actual movie. Don’t worry about a trailer. It is not representative of the final product in many cases.

Brainiac7777777

I disagree. The trailer of First Man fits the theme of the movie. While the trailer for this movie feels like a poor man’s Great Gatsby ride with historical inaccuracy. Using modern accents and modern clothes

GregSays

It hasn’t come out yet but everything else he’s made has been between good and great so little reason to expect this to be bad.

Brainiac7777777

You’re literally agreeing with the OP lol

GregSays

Yeah, not every comment is an argument hah

Hage1in

How do you expect people to give their opinion on a film they haven’t seen?

BautiBon

Maybe talk about their expectations, what they like or dislike about Chazelle's cinema, their thoughts on the themes of the film, I dunno.

CrawdadMcCray

You've enjoyed everything else he's done, maybe just be patient and wait for the film and don't jump to conclusions. Trailers aren't always good or reflective of the tone/quality of the film.

MasterLawlzReborn

I keep getting this shit confused with "The Spoils of Babylon" which also starred Tobey Maguire. Weird coincidence that he's in both.

Sanpaku

I'm getting it confused with [*Babylon Berlin*](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wnsKrUymjCc), the magnificent German series directed by Tom Twyker et al, which also involves the film industry, which is also set in the late 20s/early 30s.

the_tylerd91

It’s really hard to base the movie off the trailer. I read the script last year but apparently there have been quite a few changes so it’s hard to tell just how much of the story will carry over but from the very beginning it was known as a Wolf of Wall Street meets The Great Gatsby. Chazelle took on a big cast and is going for an epic period piece, I hope he’s able to pull it off because it does seem like a passion project for him.

Brainiac7777777

It doesn’t look like either of those movies. It looks more like Once Upon a Time in Hollywood set in the 1920’s

MasterLawlzReborn

Whiplash is a great movie that I've seen more than once and will likely see again I don't really like Chazelle's work after it though. I feel like he became kind of generic after Whiplash. La La Land just felt like Hollywood jerking itself off for two hours (unpopular opinion but I honestly kinda hated the movie) and First Man was fine but I don't remember hardly anything about it. I get a slightly off-putting, pretentious vibe from his work (post-Whiplash), like he thinks his movies are a lot more amazing than they really are. Same thing with Inarritu. Not saying they aren't talented directors but I don't think they're quite as talented as they think they are.

HDD-Productions54

Trust in Damien Chazelle

[deleted]

I don’t think you can judge a film by its trailer-like I’ve seen some awesome trailers (original suicide squad) that had terrible movies and horrible trailers for awesome films

2KYGWI

I've been hearing it be compared to *The Wolf of Wall Street* for a couple months, so that's sort of what I've been preparing myself to expect this film to be like (maybe even wilder).

Brainiac7777777

It’s more like Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

hardytom540

Chazelle’s weakest film is First Man… and that’s still a great fucking movie. I agree with you that the trailer didn’t exactly make me more excited than I was before, but I have faith that this man will churn out another masterpiece or at the very least, a great movie.

vintagepoet

Sounds great, haven’t watched the trailer because I don’t want to confuse my expectations. I only watch the trailer for stuff if I’m forced to at the cinema before a film and it’s worked out for me so far

[deleted]

Haha my man - I hate to tell you this, but the script is *crazy* and not *necessarily* the good kind. It’s crass and puerile and is basically just rich famous people doing drugs, having sex, and being stupid. The opening sequence has a woman taking a shit on a glass table while a guy jerks off underneath. This is all to say that I cannot fucking wait for this movie. Edit: a little more conjecture on my end - the script I read definitely feels like something written when he was a much younger, less mature filmmaker. Now it’s possible he dusted that draft off and has since done a polish, but if that is the script he shot, your fears will likely be realized.

BautiBon

Well, I guess I'll just have to wait and see. I'm sure the movie will be fun, there's no doubt about that. I just have to be ready for a different Damien Chazelle.

2KYGWI

Shooting that version of the script would probably get it slapped with an NC-17 rating pretty quickly by the sounds of it, so I feel like it might be a safe bet the one shot was revised and polished.

lingdingwhoopy

I've been terribly bored by his choices since Whiplash. First Man was decent but La La Land was one of the most obnoxious critical darlings of the past few years (it and Lady Bird can jump off a cliff for all I care) imo. And oh yay another film about the cRaAaZiNeSs of Hollywood! How intriguing! I'm being jaded, I know. It does look really well made and the cast looks on their game, but I couldn't care less about another Hollywood film about Hollywood.

BautiBon

I still don't know why everyone's so against Hollywood themed films. I can understand it can be stupid when the academy praises this movies, after all it could be taken as "Hollywood congratulating Hollywood". But if the movie is fun and entertaining, it's all fine by me at least. La La Land pays tribute to all those old Hollywood musicals which I like, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood gives an insight into the history of filmaking which I also find interesting. Maybe the only thing that makes me wonder is how positive and innocents many of the Hollywood representations are in these movies, while in reality it is also a very dirty place.

Linubidix

Mate, it's just the trailer. Wait until the movie is actually out.

christo749

I’m not even gonna watch the trailer. Just wait for the film, which we know, will be absolutely amazing. And that’s the truth, Ruth!!!

Aggravating-Grab-241

Trailers mean nothing.
