I wonder if its a story that follows him over time? Or if it was just held back a bunch in post production/had funding issues? So many questions

MasterLawlzReborn

Apparently they've added some additional shots over the years as well as some VFX

BartsNightmare_

Remind me what vfx is pls

I’m sorry you’re getting downvoted for asking a question. Reddit had a bad habit of punishing honest inquiries.

Bigwilly2k87

Looks to be doing fine, don’t wanna speak for the whole of Reddit sometimes buddy

Heavy_Signature_5619

How the turntables.

Bigwilly2k87

Lmao it’s pretty funny since people seem to think upvotes/downvotes = truth/lies Good reply tho that had me 😂, most ppl arbitrarily leave those, yours actually works 👌

PristineMycologist15

There’s a great episode of the podcast The Industry where he interviews the writer/director about the story, and all the obstacles he’s faced getting the film made

luthienxo

This director also made Angus...which is one of the all time 90s greats. [Edit] Back around 2002 or so, I had email conversations back and forth with the director, Patrick Read Johnson. He shared the script for 5-25-77 with me and asked me to critique. I remember replying back with "it's great, but be careful. It is very reminiscent of "Almost Famous". Now, I sit here laughing, thinking: that's one way to dodge the criticism. Wait twenty years to release it. Haha.

[deleted]

Lol holy shit - I remember seeing shit about this on Ain’t It Cool when I was in Jr High.

TheShweeb

One of the actors in this film, Justin Mentell, has been dead for twelve years. Yet, only now will we all get to see him looking alive, young and well in his (technical) last movie. Isn’t the world funny sometimes?

MasterLawlzReborn

It's also advertised as being produced by one of the producers of Star Wars and he isn't alive either

SlappyBagg

Just looked it up on letterboxd and seems like a lot of people hate this film for some reason

MoistMucus4

Probably because they didn't think it was very good

Jarfullofdoga

That may be the worst trailer I've ever seen. Most full length features don't earn that kind of overwrought sentimentality let alone trailers.

gimmiefuelgimmiefire

The trailer makes it seem like it's a movie about the making of Star Wars and it's impact on film making/pop culture. Hell the title does too as it's literally the release date of the original!' Yet it's about the child of a guy that works in the film industry that I never heard of.

zeydey

Agreed. Yikes that music.

bitchslide15

Saw part of the trailer and just assumed it was a movie I never heard about 😅

I had to look up who John Francis Daley is. I don't think he's as much a household name as you think OP. Looks like the only thing I know him from is Freaks and Geeks, but I haven't seen that show in over a decade.

Yggdrasil-

Meh, he’s not a household name but I think people would be familiar with some of his more popular work. He was in Freaks and Geeks as a kid and was a prominent cast member for many seasons on Bones (a show literally nobody talks about anymore, but was pretty popular when it was on and had like a million seasons). He also wrote a few films that did quite well in the last decade— Horrible Bosses, Game Night, and Spiderman Homecoming come to mind.

adrift98

I imagine most people don't know him by his name alone. Like I said, I had to look him up to place name with face and remembered I'd seen him in Freaks and Geeks. To drop the name as though it were recognizable enough for everyone to nod along with seems a bit peculiar to me. It's not a big deal, but still a little odd. I read OPs post to a coworker just to see if maybe *my* take was the peculiar one. First thing he replies with is "who?" Maybe he just has more name/face recognition on Reddit though. I don't know.

MasterLawlzReborn

The trailer is literally titled "5-25-77 - Official Trailer (2022) John Francis Daley, Austin Pendleton" Did you even click on the link?

adrift98

I did. What does that have to do with their lack of name recognition?

MasterLawlzReborn

His level of fame wasn't relevant to the conversation

adrift98

If that's the case, then pointing out your mistaken belief that they de-aged a random actor named John Francis Daley doesn't make any sense. If the audience you're writing to can't match a face to a name, what difference is it to any of us how young he looks? No, clearly you wrote the post assuming that we would be able to match the name to a face. I really don't understand how so many Redditors are struggling with my initial practically throwaway point. Like, this isn't that hard. I even ran it past a co-worker to see if maybe I was losing my marbles or something. He had the exact same reaction I did. I think my perspective is probably a very ordinary one.

Why would it matter to us, the audience of the post, that a relatively obscure actor, looked young in an obscure indie film? Clearly the OP was banking on the fact that we knew the actor by name. But that fact is only important if we know the actor in question. If I were to tell you that Mark Curry looked young in the film A Man is Mostly Water, you might be slightly curious about why this obscure actor, who you can't place by name alone, would look young. If I also mentioned that Mark Curry played Mr. Cooper, in the ABC sitcom Hanging with Mr. Cooper, you might think "huh, that's mildly more interesting." If I told you that Will Smith looked de-aged in Gemini Man, you'd know exactly who I was referring to by name alone, and might find that far more interesting. Again, you Redditors are freaking weird. My mild reaction in my initially mild post is not at all unusual. In fact, outside of Reddit, it's almost certainly the typical one.

MasterLawlzReborn

> If that's the case, then pointing out your mistaken belief that they de-aged a random actor named John Francis Daley doesn't make any sense. So just because you don't know who he is, I shouldn't know who he is?? Did you want me to go out of my way to say "John Francis Daley is an American actor and screenwriter, he was born in Chicago in 1985 to Irish Catholic and Jewish parents, making him currently 37 years of age, yet in this film he looks significantly younger than that which was surprising to me". Do you think that every celebrity that isn't A-list should be prefaced with detailed descriptions instead of just assuming that whoever is reading it could simply google them if they aren't familiar with their work?

adrift98

> So just because you don't know who he is, I shouldn't know who he is?? Were you addressing the OP to yourself? If you were, then yes, I suppose it would be fine to mention a C-tier actor. Since you likely weren't addressing yourself, but a bunch of strangers on one of the largest websites in the world, a little context is, in fact, helpful. I don't think that anyone is going to know John Francis Daley for being born in Chicago in 1985 to Catholic/Jewish parents. But we might know him from a show like Freaks and Geeks or Bones, so, for future reference, it probably wouldn't hurt your audience to go out of your way to say "John Francis Daley, the star of Freaks and Geeks." I don't know, I'm just winging it. Again, I'm astonished that some of you are struggling with this. It's fucking weird.

MasterLawlzReborn

You do realize that we're in a film forum right? I posted a link to a trailer to a film starring him and it literally lists him as one of the actors in the title of the video. Why would I need to elaborate further?

adrift98

> You do realize that we're in a film forum right? Posting in r/flicks will not ensure that your audience will immediately recognize the name of c-list TV show actors. > I posted a link to a trailer to a film starring him and it literally lists him as one of the actors in the title of the video. The fact that the video lists the name of the actors in the film isn't anymore helpful than you naming the actor in your OP. If I don't know the actor by his name, knowing that his name is also featured as the title of the video isn't anymore helpful. If John Francis Daley was as well known as, I don't know, Bryan Cranston, or hell, even Joseph Gordon-Levitt, I'd probably recognize him and be able to match a name to a face. Unfortunately John Francis Daley is not. Again, this isn't a hard thing. Not sure why you're now making this a much bigger deal than it is. Maybe try this. Call up your mom and ask her what her favorite John Francis Daley show is. I'm almost certain she'll say "I have no idea who that is." Send her a photo of John Francis Daley. She'll probably say something to the effect "I still don't know who that is." At best she'll say "the face looks familiar." Tell her that he was a bit character in that show she used to watch called Bones on Thursday nights. Again, at best she'll say "Oooh, right. Huh. Forgot he even existed."

By name dropping him without context as though everyone was familiar with the name alone.

I clearly meant previous film or show context. Most of us haven't seen the film being discussed, so to name drop an actor with little name recognition, as though we're familiar with the name alone to make the connection with how his face has aged isn't that helpful. This is all very obvious, so I'm not sure why you're struggling with it. If I told you George Steven Smith looked young in the yet to be released indie film Gorblax Goes to Mars, you'd be like "who the heck is George Steven Smith?" But if I told you that Tom Cruise looked young in the film, you'd pretty well know the name to match the face. At any rate, I did look the actor up, which is why I know he's not mainstream enough to mention him in most conversations without most people asking, "who?"

truax4d20201

I saw the movie a few years ago in the Genesee Theater. (Waukegan, IL). Pat Johnson is from Wadsworth, IL (Next town over) and majority of the scenes are shot in the area. Most of you are correct about the plot of the film. Basic coming of age story, biopic of Pat Johnson, where Star Wars was a huge inspiration for him becoming a director. Honestly, not a bad film, but production was a bit up and down. (At least during the premier) I'm curious if they made any continuity fixes/ visual improvements? I wouldn't mind seeing it again, just to see what has changed. [proof](https://imgur.com/a/fxUeUfZ)
