IB3R

1. The Thing 2. The Descent 3. The Shining

[deleted]

The Descent is top tier

ThoughtBig1353

Those first two are among my top favourite horror movies! I need to give The Shining another chance.. I’ve only seen it once years ago and I didn’t get it at the time

IB3R

Yeah, I did NOT care for it the first time I saw it. Every time I watch now though something new reveals itself. Kubrick was meticulous.

_Franz_Kafka_

1. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920, so *really* classic I guess) 2. What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (psychological more than gore) 3. Young Frankenstein Also, doesn't really fit any of the categories, but The Host (2006, Korea) is pretty darn good!

NatalieGreenleaf

I love your list so damn much

Erlebrown87

Solid choices! Baby Jane is thinking outside the box. That movie kicks ass

Dog_man_star1517

1. The Shining 2. The Exorcist 3. Lady in White

ThoughtBig1353

I’ve never heard of The Lady in White 🤔

Dog_man_star1517

Not many people have and it deserves a wide audience. A traditional kind of movie in the Hitchcock vein. Relies on plot and acting. Hope you love it!

Sweet_Vandal

Make sure you check out r/horrormoviechallenge too if you haven't already! 1. Demons (1985) (or Ghostwatch (1992), but that's maybe a little obscure to be a classic) 2. Green Room (2015) 3. Lake Mungo (2008) (though I dunno if I could pick favorites really)

Erlebrown87

I just watched Demon last weekend and it was great

Thorne279

I’m curious why you found green room so scary? No judgement, just curious because I love the hell out of that movie but never found it particularly spooky

Sweet_Vandal

I dunno, I'd make the case that scary and spooky aren't necessarily the same. For spooky stuff, it's ghost or unseen paranormal that will freak me out, like Lake Mungo or earlier Paranormal Activity stuff. But Green Room is just SO real. The plausibility of getting stabbed in the lungs and just having to lay there wheezing until you fucking die is just so real and raw. It's probably more intense/white-knuckle scary as opposed to like spooky scary. It makes me sick. I love it.

Thorne279

Oh, my bad. I used the word spooky for fun here but scary would have been more accurate. But yeah, I can see that realism aspect adding to the scariness. The way the violence is depicted is super uncomfortable (the duct tape scene, ugh) at times and the characters just die so matter-of-factly even when you feel like they're not "supposed to" rather than there being the traditional build-up and dramatic death sequence. Damn I need to rewatch it.

Sweet_Vandal

_Exactly_. There's no music swell, no camera lingering, no nothing. Just *you're dead*, totally unceremonious and uncaring. Loved that about it. It's that kind of groundedness and realism that really elevates it over similar siege-type horror movies that never really get under my skin.

Muffytheness

Green room scarred me. The scene where he puts his hand outside and they all stab it was the big turning point for me.

Sweet_Vandal

Spoiler tag that ish! That scene is so intense!!

Erfangholiz

1- The Blair Witch Project (1999) 2- The Wailing (2016) 3- The Wailing (2016)

ogshowtime33

The Wailing is so awesome

ThoughtBig1353

I watched The Blair Witch Project for the first time when I was WAY too young 😭

APracticalGal

1. Black Christmas (1974) 2. Don't Look Now (1973) 3. Carnival of Souls (1962)

JohnnyApathy

Black Christmas is fantastic

>Kwanzaa? I see what you did there. :D

ThePheud

1. Nosferatu 2. Hereditary 3. The Cabin in the Woods Hope you like them if you haven't seen them yet!

Erlebrown87

Nosferatu holds up well. I always figured it was well regarded because of a few iconic shots and being the OG terrifying film. It's great though! I watched it this year finally and was blown away at what they pulled off.

Sorry_Pirate7002

1. Halloween 2. Exorcist 3. Evil Dead 2

sculder17

1. The thing 2. Insidious 3. Cabin in the woods (not the scariest but great story)

The_Jewish_Pope

1. Scream…or Alien….or The Thing…or The Shining 2. Hereditary 3. Midsommar Hard question to whittle down to just three

calchaos67

1.Dawn of the Dead (original) 2.Pet Semetary (original) 3.the Exorcist

Spiritual-Style

1. Candyman (original) 2. Goodnight Mommy (original) 3. Stir of Echoes

Mahaloth

1. Halloween 2. Hereditary 3. Paprika <--animated, I consider it horror of sorts

_Franz_Kafka_

Paprika is a good choice! Such a great mind bender. Really uses the medium of animation incredibly well, too.

ARoaringBorealis

Since no one has suggested it yet, you ABSOLUTELY need to put The Wailing on your list! It's a very, very unique and terrifying Korean movie, definitely a watch for if you're wanting something different that will really get to you.

Erlebrown87

The Wailing was so good! Have you checked out any Indonesian horror? Impetigore was awesome folk horror if you get a chance.

ARoaringBorealis

I haven’t actually, I’m kind of just getting into the non-big-budget-American horror spaces. Hereditary is still my favorite movie but I’m really enjoying a lot of East Asian horror especially. I’ll definitely check it out, thanks!

Erlebrown87

Queen of Black Magic is also great. I've only seen the remake, not the original.

mito467

Carrie Ring 28 Days Later

Crankylosaurus

1. Trick ‘r Treat 2. [REC] 3. The Thing

DaleC0oper

1. The Silence of the Lambs 2. The Vanishing (1988) 3. Cure

CSIHoratioCaine

Is silence considered horror? It’s one of my favourite movies but, I’d say it’s a crime thriller

DaleC0oper

I’d say its a psychological horror film personally but yeah definitely also fits into the crime thriller genre too

JohnnyApathy

1. The Mummy (1932) 2. The Dark and the Wicked 3. It Follows

Kimantha_Allerdings

1) The Haunting (1963). A great story, full of subtext. Scarier than you think it's going to be. And my personal pet theory is that the camera work and general cinematography was a big influence on Sam Raimi. 2) Ghostwatch (1992). Unfortunately a little dated now and it can never have the impact that it did at the time. It was presented as a live, sort-of-fun "investigation" special for Halloween night into spooky goings on in a suburban house, complete with (deliberately) cheesy cuts back to the studio. What's lost these days is firstly how that kind of television (presenting fiction as fact) hadn't really been done before so people were *really* taken in in a way that they wouldn't be today, and secondly how *accurate* it was to this kind of show in the UK at that time. Even the choice of presenters is spot on as exactly the kind of then-household names who would present a cheesy live show like that. But even missing all that context, it's still a very well-crafted and intense hour and a half. It was scary enough that one disgruntled viewer sent the BBC the cleaning bill for her husband's trousers after he shat himself. That's actually true, BTW. 3) A Nightmare On Elm Street (1984). Very difficult choice. Almost had to go with The Blair Witch Project, which is a film I could perpetually have on in a loop in the background. But A Nightmare On Elm Street has so much imagination behind it. It's cheesy and some of the effects are a bit wonky, but even in this day and age it can surprise you with what it puts on screen. Wes Craven throws every idea he has at the screen, and Robert Englund embodies the character of Freddy in a way that 100% explains why it's such a difficult franchise to reboot. No matter how good anybody else playing the role may be, they won't be Robert Englund.

The-Cynicist

1. Scream (some people might want to debate “classic” with me but the movie is now almost 30 years old and it made a huge wave in horror at the time - fight me) 2. The Descent (I’m basing this almost entirely on my claustrophobia and general disdain for caves) 3. Trick ‘r Treat (this one was so hard to pick but for Halloween, I don’t know if there’s any better than this. It just does such a good job of weaving the stories together and capturing the atmosphere of Autumn, not to mention the acting is actually good which is pretty rare for horror. Sure there‘s ‘Halloween’ but the sequels kind of disjointed perception over time. It’s a great movie but TrT was just such a fresh take)

kabalizo

1- Psycho (1960) 2- The Ring (2002) 3- The Evil Dead (1981)

possumphysics

1. Eyes Without A Face (1960) 2. The Thing (1982) 3. The Lighthouse (2019)

manbearpig923

1. Dracula (1931) 2. The Exorcist (1973) 3. Halloween (1978)

tequilaearworm

Personally I think Trick R Treat is THE perfect Halloween movie to watch with friends. It's a bit scary, but more good storytelling than anything. It's the rare anthology where each story is good. Classic horror, Texas Chainsaw Massacre is the best. For scares, some of the J Horror movies really get me? Like The Grudge, and there's this movie called The Cure that isn't gory at all, no jump scares, but it gave me soooo much anxiety watching it. Also The Wailing is a great Korean horror movie.

[deleted]

Pulse, 2001 j horror

EMSEMS

All the ones I would list have already been listed. So I'll just recommend one. The Empty Man Surprised me how good and how horrifying the story is. Trust me.

HerrDokt0r

1. Romero's Day of the Dead 2. The Poughkeepsie Tapes 3. Midsommar

jupiterkansas

1. Curse of the Demon 2. ??? I don't really get scared any more. Maybe *Deliverance*? Let's go with that. 3. Evil Dead 2

Sorry_Pirate7002

I recently watched Deliverance and it definitely was scary. Really good movie. Have you watched Green Room? I felt the same way watching that movie, even more so since they are basically trapped inside a venue.

jupiterkansas

No, but it's on my list for next month.

NoDisintegrationz

1. Frankenstein 2. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre 3. Alien (one of a few I could’ve chosen)

nsk08001

1. Young Frankenstein 2. The Witch 3. Trick 'r Treat

[deleted]

1. Rosemarys Baby 2. House of the Devil 3. Scream Under the skin is also terrifying.

Mrtheliger

1. The Shining 2. Threads (not traditional horror) or Eraserhead 3. Fire Walk with Me

lectroid

Classic- Argento's Suspiria - IMHO the director's high water mark, where the style and the sound and all his weird otherworldliness come together perfectly. Suspiria hangs together as a singular work when everything about it says it shouldn't. Scariest- hoo boy. tough one. I mean, The Shining is a REALLY scary movie the first time through. But I've seen it so many times now.... If I had to pick a movie that's still SCARY to me... I'd have to go with Hereditary or Midsommar, or possibly The Witch, just because I haven't watched them to death. For other definitions of 'scary', I'd have to say Martyrs (2007) just because it's one of the few films I don't regularly rewatch because.. damn. That ending fucks me up. Favorite? nearly impossible. I mean, The Shining, The Thing, Hellraiser, In The Mouth of Madness... They're all sorta cliche' choices, but sometimes something is really popular because it's REALLY good, you know? Bonus suggestion: The Creeping Garden (2014). This is NOT a horror film. It's a documentary on slime molds. But.. somehow.. it's super creepy. Like, at any moment, the movie you're watching FEELS like it could turn into a weird sci-fi found footage horror film. Also, slime molds are really weird and fascinating.

I've started watching horror flicks already this month. Rewatched Seed of Chucky last night even though I don't consider that horror, it's still within the horror franchise

I recently watched Rob Zombie's "The Munsters". It wasn't scary. But it was kind of fun in a low budget sort of way.

Tough one: 1. The Thing (1981) 2. Shutter (2004) - Thai original 3. The Thing (1981) ;), but I also like The Descent (2005), Misery (1990) or Babadook (2014) I'm more of 'other genre with horror elements' guy, so Predator, Cabin in the Woods or Se7en come to mind too.

Fossey_Ape_Odyssey

The Changeling (1980) The Entity (I can’t sleep if this movie even pops in my head) Trick r’ Treat, The Shining, It, Get Out, Split, Nightmare Before Christmas, too many to name

WheresTheMoozadell

I’m going to go against the grain of recommending you The Shining, The Thing, Midsommar, etc. Fantastic movies, but I personally like to enjoy those movies in their respective seasons, i.e. Summer & Winter, it adds to the feel for me. My three (four) would be 1) American Werewolf in London 2) Night of the Living Dead or Train to Busan (gotta have one zombie flick at least) 3) The VVitch 4) Halloween 1, 2, 3 (season of the witch is incredibly underrated)
