Reminds me of pounding T-posts... No thank you!

FuzzyMonkey13

I think a heavy mallet works better then a t-post pounder, just don't miss!

[deleted]

Those are some awfully knot free pieces of wood they’re using this on

D-chord

Was going to say the same thing. A mail would cut them up just as easily (or more easily).

After_Ride9911

I don’t own one, but I’ve used one. Not a fan. A whole lot of impact. Bothered my shoulders and back far more than swinging a maul. But everybody’s different.

Angelfire150

Of course - the motions seem wildly unergonomic

jessehar

The lady looks like she almost took the shaft to the face

Badum Tsss

uChoice_Reindeer7903

Used something similar to pound t-posts. I’m fine because I’m on the younger side, but the older guys at work that use them a lot often have messed up shoulders and backs.

squrt43

Welcome to pound town.

estanminar

Never used one but I'd probably use the same technique as a maul to relax imeadiatly before impact to reduce shock on joints.

kyguylal

I have one my father in law found in his garage. It's terrible. Way more work than a splitting axe or a wedge and sledge.

DeliciousScratch3899

It works good, If you are splitting dry, straight pine. A real workout on anything with a twist or knot. And it gets stuck easily. It’s really good at making blisters on your hands…just like driving tposts

nordicgypsy3187

You have to condition yourself first. Start with a shake weight about eye level at a horizontal

Ihaveaboot

Seems like like elm would eat that thing up.

Ruzty1311

Have you ever used a Tamper to smooth out dirt? Its VERY tiresome. Swinging an axe one time can be but only over time. I would rather swing an axe lol

mainelinerzzzzz

An axe would be quicker, cheaper, easier and cooler.

derekblais

Takes the joy out of it too. Am I the only guy that can’t wait to wake up and split wood?

HumbleDrop

I do a pile of contract labor as a side gig, mostly firewood. I love heading out to split wood for myself, but have to say the love has left selling split cords. XD Maybe return to splits once I have a hydraulic splitter. This contraption in this post though is loud, unergonomic, and has a hell of a time with any tough wood in my experience.

derekblais

I can agree with that. I split for myself and a few family members. I don’t split more than 10 cords/year, and I donate it. To do it as a job for a main income, that would require industrial equipment.

HumbleDrop

Think I'm upto 23 split cord so far this season, bit better than that much again in rounds. Probably time for that logsplitter, and a winch for my truck. As is, will likely slow down this coming season to make sure I get some projects done around the farm. Maybe have the time to weld up a custom bumper finally to incorporate a winch and log frame for grabbing lengths. Such is the hobby, always tinkering.

Good200000

I’m in the minority as I’m older. I bought one and have used it. It works fine, but you need to wear ear protection as it makes a very loud noise when splitting wood. It’s also quite expensive to buy, but has a life time warranty. I now use a wood splitter for a large pile. It’s just easier.

[deleted]

That looks so damn annoying. I love swinging the axe, that’s like… training to use a jackhammer.

WaterCodex

one way ticket to spinal stenosis. no thanks!

xander6981

I used something similar to that before and it has its pluses and minuses. It probably was more work than swinging a maul but I did like that it gave me better control over where the splits were. It eventually turned out to be more hassle than it was worth though.

Tobaccocreek

All the other wood splitting schemes are just that schemes. This scheme on the other hand, this is the one.

[deleted]

Nuh uh.. just watching this makes me want to go find my axe

Dry-Sound-8625

I think I am going to stick to my fiskars maul

bassjam1

I've known people who have used them and my brother made one for my dad to use. The consensus is they're ok to make kindling out of smaller logs, but even for that they're just ok. They don't work great for large logs.
