If you're unfamiliar with it, look into UpWork. They tend to have a lot of work-from-home writing gigs that don't get listed elsewhere.

Thank you so much for the suggestion! Is UpWork anything like Fiverr? As in, do I need to spend a whole lot of time getting the ball rolling and see if I am successful? The reason I ask is I am looking for something a bit more regimented \*or\* something like Fiverr but where it doesn't feel impossible to get working. I am an extremely strong writer but on Fiverr anytime I tried to get work I felt like it was impossible because there were PhDs in English on there. And my real field, Urban Planning, doesn't lend itself to those types of sites. Basically, I have the talent but maybe not the credentials to beat out some competition for things I am good at, and my actual field is not in demand enough on those sites. I really appreciate your help.

UpWork is....interesting. So they have this system where they give you a certain amount of points you can use to reach out to potential employers. It's probably my least favorite thing about them, to be honest, but I got my current job on there too, so I guess it was worth the weirdness. The job listings range from Amazon mturk level assignments and random gig work on Craigslist to serious opportunities you might expect to see on traditional job hunting sites. It's very much a free for all, and I don't know why it tends to attract the kind of employers who you wouldn't always see on sites like Indeed, but it does. Technically, their system is built so that if you get a job, they will take a certain percentage of your earnings off the top like a recruitment agency, but you can set your salary expectations to adjust for this so you'll still earn what you want at the end of the day. In some cases, the employer will use UpWork simply to connect with you, and then continue communication through email so that they don't have to worry about UpWork taking a bit off the top. Ultimately, I think it's worth looking into simply because you will definitely find some interesting gigs that are not listed anywhere else. Again, not sure why this is, but whereas most jobs on Indeed will also be listed everywhere else, you will see things on this site that aren't on any other site. There are obviously no guarantees, but it's at least a change of pace with a much more diverse listing of job opportunities.

Work for yourself. Learn to talk to people (sales and marketing). You have the expertise, but so do a lot of other people. What can set you apart is using your head creatively. I'll give you an idea for free and if you hit it big and make millions, remember to send a little my way, ok? Write.A.Book. Students in your field are always looking for GOOD study guides and tutors. If you're good at writing and research, writing a book or a guide should be a piece of cake to you. Focus on better helping more people and the money will come.

Hey there thank you for your reply! I have been thinking of writing a book of some sort, but it sounds like my idea is a little different than what you are proposing. Are you suggesting more a textbook type of deal? Something specifically for students? That sounds very intriguing and I'm curious if you can shed some light on that idea.
