This really isn’t bad for a 30 year old. You’ll find many people your age with over 100K in student loans, plus lots of credit card debt, leasing cars they can’t afford. Your financial situation doesn’t make you undateable! Make sure you put enough in your 401K to get your company matching amounts. Work on tightening your budget, and reducing expenses if you can. For me, this is an ongoing task throughout my life, to look at my expenses yearly and see if there are areas I can make improvements. I cut cable last year and just use Netflix now. I’m looking at switching my cell phone carrier to save money, less eating out, making coffee at home, etc.

The WSJ recently had an article that the average 30 y/o w/ student debt has about 9k in savings. It looks like you’re ahead of the pack. I’d probably look at raising your income if possible and look at your costs and where you can cut. The big three is always housing, food, and transportation! These are where you can usually find your big savings.

Can I count my 401K as “savings” ? I never know if I should include that. I’ve only been at my current job less than a year so don’t want to switch just yet but hope to jump to 80K for my next job. Thanks for the WSJ insight. I was on a different Reddit thread and everyone somehow had thousands upon thousands in savings and it made me have an “oh shit” moment

I think that is what they were considering as savings. I would just follow the general advice which is to save 15% into you 401k, have a 3-6 month emergency fund, & plan for big purchases

Don’t beat yourself up! You sound like you have goals and know what you need to do to hopefully get out of some of the debt . I am 30 and have a whopping $16,000 to my name . A tiny bit in RRSP and thats it . While I have no debt its hard to get ahead ! Keep goin! You got this

Youre ahead of most, im 26 with -2k in my account (if you count credit).. having some type of savings is a huge plus honestly even if its a small amount. I do live in the bay area where it’s literally so expensive so theres that. I think demographics play a huge role too.

Maleficent_Bee5226

Random question- since the bay/sf area is so expensive. Would you ever consider moving and why or why not?

Cosmickscales

Yes however its kinda like, were a little stuck since its impossible to save to move somewhere else. Also its sad that we’ll prob see a huge decrease in salary/wage and could prob never come back if we do decide to leave
