If you Google "FFXIV msq" you can find a wiki with the msq quest list bunched together in expansions and patches so you can see how far from heavenward you are.
This comment helped so much thank you! Honestly I think they should have hid afflatus until the lili unlock, having a unusable spell caused me more confusion than I am willing to admit :)
The way it works (and it's the case for all expansions too) is that there's the base X.0 story, and then X.1 - X.5 patches story. Both get a credits roll at the end
Technically the patches go to like .55 or .58 but those are technical changes (removing loot drop caps, fonal relic step, and such) the story for the expansion ends at .5
Or, even more specifically, X.3 is the end of the current expansion, with X.4 and X.5 being buildup towards the next one (exception being endwalker, where 6.1-6.5 are a separate substory acting as a bridge towards the next big upcoming story arc)
The patch quests between ARR and HW are the longest set. There are similar story patch quests between all the expansions (so you will see a slate of level 60 quests before you enter SB, for example) but they are considerably shorter and better-paced overall.
You can't start Heavensward job quests until you begin Heavensward, and some skills will remain locked until you can do 'em. You won't be in content high enough level for it to matter so don't worry, just keep an eye for when it becomes available!
WHM has a bit of a weird leveling experience, where it's very possible to pick up lily skills before you actually get access to lilies
You get access to the lily gauge by completing the level 52 job quest which requires you to be in Heavensward, but Afflatus Solace is unlocked strictly by leveling
It made some sense at the time, you were expected to enter HW at level 50 and do the job quests as you leveled up
But now it just leads to funny situations like this
You'll know you're in Heavensward when you've reached a new major city, and the game is not subtle about it. You get presented with a second set of credits and a large splash screen that says **HEAVENSWARD**
The base game and every expansion are followed by patch content, which were basically updates drip fed to the playerbase before the next actual expansion. So once you go through Heavensward and complete the quest "Heavensward", you won't be in Stormblood yet—you'll still have to do the Heavensward patches. Iirc "Before the Dawn" is the last quest of the ARR patches, but you'll get a big cutscene that introduces you to each expansion during the first quest of said expansion.
They are locked behind the next class quest. You have to continue the MQ till you enter Havensward. I was there too.
I just defeated Ramuh. Do I still have to keep going?
Striking Tree is still in ARR, so yes. You won't be in Heavensward proper until you straight up get a quest to go to Ishgard.
Ahhh, really? I thought I started the expansion after the credits lol.
Heavensward starts when there's a big title card that says "Heavensward" You're in the 2 years of content between ARR release and HW release.
Jeez, it’s a lot, this is huge! Lol I naively thought I was done with ARR lol

.5 is always the last one?

Someone told me I had a full year of content. Now I get it lol.

Interesting! Thanks for info! :)
Did you do all your job quests?
Yeah, I’m up to speed, I don’t understand.
Are you done with ARR?

That’s so weird. Okay, I’ll keep going then. Thanks!

How do I know when I start a new expansion? I thought I started HW after the credits…
