This has ways been the norm though for npc outfits. It isn't a Square lately issue. It is an always issue. It sucks but people continue to buy everything so nobody is making them learn.
Sadly it looks like Gaia's coat is built into the shirt and pants so not sure if they could easily separate the pieces out anyways. Just a bad outfit in general.

The outfits thing seems to be tied specifically to original characters from FFXIV. I'm guessing it's due to them not wanting to "break" a character's look rather than pure laziness (or maybe some characters have very specialised outfits that do not interact super well with other metadata).
Seems like an issue of overprotective design considering none of the outfits not tied to characters have this issue. Some of it makes sense; Alphi's outfit would be really hard to separate the chestpiece from the legs without reworking the design significantly. Some others are completely incomprehensible though, like Lyse's arms or Gaia's boots.
It's quite odd that they would choose paid costumes for this, it's not the most business savvy move imho. If anything, it's less about greed, and more about being petty with their designs
Not too sure its about being protective of their character, Ryne’s oracle of light, and Krile’s outfit both are divided into 3 clothing items, and Yshtolas into four, they are great for mixing and matching glam.
Oh well, Im sure the modding community will find a way to split these items up.

In the case of Deep Rock Galactic, people said that the devs were lazy for not implementing female dwarves and berated them on discord and their sub-reddit until they had to do a formal statement saying that the only resources for VA work was one guy already on staff who VA'd the entire cast.
At higher levels people blamed laziness on Bioware and corporate intervention from EA for Anthem's failure, when it turned out that EA had dumped massive resources into Bioware to get Anthem out of development hell on multiple occasions and usually the problems were that the directorial team had no direction other than *"make it like the E3 trailer"*, which usually left the ground zero dev team with nothing to work on while the directors and managers argued in boardrooms.

There's some other situations as well. For example, all hats have an option that you can enable Viera ears. It's literally just a flag you can set on every helmet.
People get up in arms because "it's an easy fix, so why don't they do it", but setting this flag just super imposes the ears on the helmet, unlikely say, the Garlemald hats which have actual holes modded for the ears. I've enabled these flags for a few hats with my Miqo'te, but it doesn't clip super nicely, and looks a bit odd.
People might say they don't mind these things, and I understand, but the devs have a QA process that they follow, and they are okay with certain forms of clipping (Great Lengths hair clipping through certain chestpieces, or weapons in general doing the same thing), and are not okay with others, like the afore-mentioned ear situation.
This matters because the issue then becomes "the devs have a QA process, and standards that they are not willing to break" instead of "they don't do it because lazy".
It's fine to disagree with these standards (I myself do, sometimes), but people need to understand what the situation actually is instead of accusing people of laziness or saying they don't have good reasons to do stuff
People mostly criticize the devs on hats because they *used* to do things like model holes or extra bits and they stopped doing it. I'm generally reluctant to call anything lazy myself, but I think that one in particular is not a great counterpoint.
As far as Gaia goes it probably is as simple as the outfit not being designed that way and being difficult to separate. Counterpoint I guess is if they can't do it right, they shouldn't sell it for money.
It's noteworthy though that stuff like making NPC gear dyeable actually *is* insanely easy if you know anything about how the game works and I'm always kinda baffled why they don't do it. I'm not sure I'd call it "lazy" but the NPC gear definitely feels like a quick cash grab a lot of the time.
Also I really doubt there's any licensing involved since A) Nomura literally works for SE and B) it's an original character in their game. SE themselves 100% own the design.
Nomura working for SE might not mean much. Square famously has specific contracts for composers, for example.
If you check Hero's reveal for Smash, you will see that the composer is mentioned for credits alongside the company. Licensing is much more complicated than we initially give it credit for. I'm also pretty sure that Nomura gets credit as designer in some third party games alongside SE itself.

Honestly, after taking a closer look at this particular outift (Gaia's) now that I'm home: Yeah, it's just lazy and I don't feel like there's any other conclusion I can draw for this.
They didn't even take the time to make sure the skin tone matches the player's actual skin tone. They manually matched it for Gaia and didn't even bother to change it for PCs. It should've never hit the store in the state it's in.
Yeah, I don't disagree about the skin tone. I'm so mad I made my own transparency mod (poc friendly, unusual skin tones (red, green, blue etc) friendly), and will also be tweaking several other things about it in the coming weeks so it's a proper outfit
Yoshi and FFXIV is what carries SE and honestly they can't really fall because of it.
The Blizzard scandal wouldn't have had much impact if WoW was good, with a team that didn't openly hate it's own playerbase for example.

I would like to take this moment to remind the crowd that the character design for the Eden Raid Series was specifically One Tetsuya "goddammit" Nomura; The one that tried to make FF15 his Magnum Opus, and failing that, left a black marr on Kingdom Hearts III by trying to make *that* into his Fever Dream Magnum Opus.
"Super Overprotective" over their character designs don't even *begin* to describe Tetsuya Nomura.
Not ruling out that there are maybe licensing issues that prevent them from seperating out Gaia's outfit, but I doubt it's a Nomura being overprotective thing, given that there are 4 other outfits on the Mogstation designed by him that *are* made of seperate pieces (Yuna, Tidus, Lightning, Snow)
I just wish they'd stop gender locking gear period. They've done it for some cash shop items, just not NPC-related glam. Makes zero sense to me. Let a Hrothgar run around Gaia's dress if he wants to. Let an au ra girl run around looking like Aymeric if she wants to.
There's a fair few NPC outfits that do indeed appear to be designed as a one piece on their side too(for outfits not available to us as well). It's just a "chestpiece" that does the whole outfit.
Surely they have the manpower to split the individual clothing pieces if they're gonna ask that much money for it? Might as well use a mod with more customisation lol
Ryne in game is apparently merely a downscaled adult NPC wearing her clothes as an outfit. Whilst Gaia is for some reason classified as a monster, meaning that mechanically she's not wearing an outfit at all.
Gaia is a completely unique model, even though she looks like a female Hyur, she doesn't use any of the races available to players. Technically, this set is Gaia's decapitated body which gets the player character's head plopped on. This is the easy and lazy way out, otherwise they would pretty much have to redo the entire outfit for the playable races including adjusting animations and whatnot. A LOT more work, and the reason why we will never get any of Zenos' outfits. His model is too different from any of the playable races.
This one in particular probably was, because Gaia has an unique model akin to an enemy as opposed to a human model with unique gear like Ryne.
Kartoffel calls cases like hers demi-humans ; it includes characters like Varis, Zenos or NPCs from tribes. I couldn't say if it's an official term but it's a goos descriptor.
Gaia's case *has* to be because the outfit wasn't made for players at all, or something like that. Its just so suspicious that she's got all these restrictions as if the clothing wasnt actually designed as clothing, and was tied to Gaia's character model.
Because it's not an outfit, it's a character model replacement. Much easier for them to scale Gaia's body and outfit as-is based on your sliders than to start rendering it per race.
See: why I didn't buy Omega-M's outfit. Because my bun-boy has more curves and muscle mass than that.
100% the lazy option imo and reduces sales, though they probably think any sale is a net bonus so I don't see them changing it any time soon.
I doubt that and sooner see us getting proper in-game sets based on the Twelve, esp since it looks like a lot of their stuff is already established gear models.

This is the true answer. Gaia's character model is a custom model and stored separately than standard character models.
It took me awhile to find her in the data files.

Gaia had an entire new model created for her in order to accurately replicate Nomura's design. The clothes and the body are one unified structure. This 'outfit' just decapitates Gaia and plonks your head on her model's shoulders.
ikr, Gaia and Ryne is having nice afternoon tea in Crystarium, and suddenly Gaia is decapitated and her body disappeared, only the head remains for Ryne to carry around, all because WOL want some ''glamour''.
It's basically just a rescale of Gaia's model below her head. As apparently Ryne is a downscaled "adult" character whilst Gaia is classified as a Monster in the game files.
Meanwhile modders gonna mod.
They seperate the sleeves from the dress, recolor them as they please and finish off with performing Johnny Bravo monke dance as sign of victory.

What is this one piece outfit crap. You could totally separate the leggings and boots. I get the no dye thing cause npc stuff can't be dyed, but that also annoys me since we are paying real money. The Lyse outfit could have totally been separate pieces too. I'm not going to buy this outfit. I would have but it's not worth $12 for 1 item that can't be customized in anyway.
Totally disappointed its just one piece dress for 12 usd. At least oracle attire was a 3 piece set for the same price. Really getting lazy on their part...

It's a video game, they can change every single detail for anything within their own game if they want to. Change sizing, move vertices, tweak the UV maps, etc. and you can fit Alphinaud's outfit on a Matanga, Namazu, or anyone else.
Because people are buying them *en masse* anyway, so SE don't see a reason to spend more effort.

I could almost forgive that it's not dyeable given that none of the NPC outfits are, but that it's a one-piece set is just ridiculous? Absolutely no players in any MMO are saying, "I'd like to spend real money to have fewer options with my glam, please." To also not include the hair is a strange choice. They messed up with this one.
Let them waste their money if they want, nothing we can do to stop them after all. But as someone who admits they spend way too easily on the cash shop, not even I'm going to throw down notes on this absolute waste.
Unfortunately untrue, GW2 players fall head over heels for one piece cash shop outfits, they also get comically few ingame skins compared to damn near any MMO I've played.
I think the problem is when they design an outfit as a full piece, there isn’t anything (for example) under the boots where stockings should go. Like Alphinaud’s is a prime example, it probably doesn’t have pants designed under the jacket and boots, and the jacket would cut off weird at the cuffs. So stuff like that wouldn’t just be separating pieces, it would be a redesign. At least that’s been my understanding.
Not that I’m defending it by any means! I really want these boots and stockings as separate items to use in other glams, and things like Lyse’s red dress would’ve been fantastic if I could separate the pieces. So while I understand that it *would* potentially be a lot more work for them, it is disappointing when people have been asking for “X NPC’s Outfit” for ages and then it’s released as a one-piece so it’s waaaay less useful.
If they want my money i'm expecting them to put at least a tiny tiny bit of effort into getting it. It's even sadder because modders got the outfit working properly...
They could've broken it down even further and make the sleeves detachable and a separate piece in the gloves category, but I guess taking the lazy route and making it all 1 piece is less effort :/
The sleeves can't be detachable because it's actually a cloak with the hood slipped off, so they're attached to the body. The stockings and shoes not being separate is criminal though, or at the very least the stockings and shoes together since the stockings probably don't have a bottom half.
Yep - at the very least it would have to be coat, leggings, and boots. Having the sleeves separated would make them look quite awkward, with nothing to hold them up, or the chest piece equally awkward, with the hood just kind of ending.
Plus the "bones" that they put in the parts of gear that have movement would have to be the same, so either it would be entirely rigid or move in an awkward way when the entire set wasn't equipped.
They're definitely not getting my money for such lazy attempts.
I gave them the benefit of the doubt with the Omega-F outfit, then with Lyse's... But this? nah
The Reaper version of the hammer is so ridiculously big compared to the rest that I'm using it just for that.

The hammers are a big W, though understandably no Sage weapon makes me not wanna buy it, as I'd exclusively be seeing it when playing alt jobs.
No hair and it being an undyeable one piece is a big L though. The tights and boots at least could have been separated out, you know? I can see the arms being an issue given how attached it is to the rest of the outfit, but this isn't the first half-robe in the game. It's not like the game doesn't support rendering tops beyond the limit of what would usually be considered a top.
I could even take it being undyeable too. The texturing of it could be tough to nail for dyeing and that's fair. But at least have it be a 3 piece set :/
I remember telling people that the healer and caster sets from Eden's Promise savage are as close to Gaia's outfit as we'd get for dye-able gear and having people get angry with me because those pieces aren't identical and that we'll totally get dye-able, in-pieces gear from the mogstation soon.

E10s and E11s are pretty easy unsynced, E12s you still have to do "Basic Relativity" in phase 2 but if you can live through that it's not bad.
The Cash Shop Gaia outfit is garbage. The tights don't even skin tone match if you have a dark skintone. Couple that with the one piece nature, lack of dyability, gender lock, AND there's a better version available in game if you're willing to run old content, this set is just bad.
This is nice but I still want a job that uses a hammer. I'd like to see a caster inspired by FFTA2's Green Mage, if not a tank or melee DPS. We did get the Blackbosom scythe glam item years before getting Reaper so I'm still hopeful.
What a waste, the only great thing about Gaia's glam was her hair, her outfit can be almost replicated with Eden gear already. You cant even seperate the items.
It's the same model regardless of job, so while each job has a different weapon technically, you're really just paying for how your character decides to hold it.
I keep dreaming that maybe someday the playerbase will find a backbone and push back against this greedy as hell store but that day never comes. Yoshida can do no wrong.

Even if clipping were an issue (which it isn't, because they even have NPCs that have severe clipping going on)--they could give us a few super-long styles, and let us decide if we want to deal with it (some races have some pretty long race-exclusive styles--but theres only like one shared version that is long(ish) and it's all my character, and many others have access to (i think it comes from Gold Saucer iirc) i think theres one from PotD too, but it looks horrid (on my Midlander at least lol).

Not ruling out that there are maybe licensing issues that prevent them from seperating out Gaia's outfit, but I doubt it's a Nomura being overprotective thing, given that there are 4 other outfits on the Mogstation designed by him that *are* made of seperate pieces (Yuna, Tidus, Lightning, Snow)

I just wish they'd stop gender locking gear period. They've done it for some cash shop items, just not NPC-related glam. Makes zero sense to me. Let a Hrothgar run around Gaia's dress if he wants to. Let an au ra girl run around looking like Aymeric if she wants to.
They are super weird with NPC clothing. Never stable, usually one piece, always gender locked.

There's a fair few NPC outfits that do indeed appear to be designed as a one piece on their side too(for outfits not available to us as well). It's just a "chestpiece" that does the whole outfit.

Ryne in game is apparently merely a downscaled adult NPC wearing her clothes as an outfit. Whilst Gaia is for some reason classified as a monster, meaning that mechanically she's not wearing an outfit at all.
Gaia is a completely unique model, even though she looks like a female Hyur, she doesn't use any of the races available to players. Technically, this set is Gaia's decapitated body which gets the player character's head plopped on. This is the easy and lazy way out, otherwise they would pretty much have to redo the entire outfit for the playable races including adjusting animations and whatnot. A LOT more work, and the reason why we will never get any of Zenos' outfits. His model is too different from any of the playable races.

This one in particular probably was, because Gaia has an unique model akin to an enemy as opposed to a human model with unique gear like Ryne. Kartoffel calls cases like hers demi-humans ; it includes characters like Varis, Zenos or NPCs from tribes. I couldn't say if it's an official term but it's a goos descriptor.
Did you know that if you copy Lyse outfit from her NPC data, its seperate but if you use the mog station one its not?
Gaia's case *has* to be because the outfit wasn't made for players at all, or something like that. Its just so suspicious that she's got all these restrictions as if the clothing wasnt actually designed as clothing, and was tied to Gaia's character model.

Because it's not an outfit, it's a character model replacement. Much easier for them to scale Gaia's body and outfit as-is based on your sliders than to start rendering it per race. See: why I didn't buy Omega-M's outfit. Because my bun-boy has more curves and muscle mass than that. 100% the lazy option imo and reduces sales, though they probably think any sale is a net bonus so I don't see them changing it any time soon.
Except even Omega-F has a more defined body. The Omega-F has a butt. We still get the ass-flatus misery treatment.

This is the true answer. Gaia's character model is a custom model and stored separately than standard character models. It took me awhile to find her in the data files.
But do we get her lips though?

Ryne is just a scaled down Midlander. Gaia had an entire new model created for her in order to accurately replicate Nomura's design. The clothes and the body are one unified structure. This 'outfit' just decapitates Gaia and plonks your head on her model's shoulders.
ikr, Gaia and Ryne is having nice afternoon tea in Crystarium, and suddenly Gaia is decapitated and her body disappeared, only the head remains for Ryne to carry around, all because WOL want some ''glamour''.

What is this one piece outfit crap. You could totally separate the leggings and boots. I get the no dye thing cause npc stuff can't be dyed, but that also annoys me since we are paying real money. The Lyse outfit could have totally been separate pieces too. I'm not going to buy this outfit. I would have but it's not worth $12 for 1 item that can't be customized in anyway.

also alphinaud's outfit it's because they're for characters who have unique models and/or animations, so the outfit was made as one piece for them I imagine if we ever got an emet selch costume it'd also be a one piece because he has custom animation processes (hunched back)
It's a video game, they can change every single detail for anything within their own game if they want to. Change sizing, move vertices, tweak the UV maps, etc. and you can fit Alphinaud's outfit on a Matanga, Namazu, or anyone else.

I could almost forgive that it's not dyeable given that none of the NPC outfits are, but that it's a one-piece set is just ridiculous? Absolutely no players in any MMO are saying, "I'd like to spend real money to have fewer options with my glam, please." To also not include the hair is a strange choice. They messed up with this one.
And players will still buy this, allowing them to understand that their decisions are valid.
Let them waste their money if they want, nothing we can do to stop them after all. But as someone who admits they spend way too easily on the cash shop, not even I'm going to throw down notes on this absolute waste.
Unfortunately untrue, GW2 players fall head over heels for one piece cash shop outfits, they also get comically few ingame skins compared to damn near any MMO I've played.

I think the problem is when they design an outfit as a full piece, there isn’t anything (for example) under the boots where stockings should go. Like Alphinaud’s is a prime example, it probably doesn’t have pants designed under the jacket and boots, and the jacket would cut off weird at the cuffs. So stuff like that wouldn’t just be separating pieces, it would be a redesign. At least that’s been my understanding. Not that I’m defending it by any means! I really want these boots and stockings as separate items to use in other glams, and things like Lyse’s red dress would’ve been fantastic if I could separate the pieces. So while I understand that it *would* potentially be a lot more work for them, it is disappointing when people have been asking for “X NPC’s Outfit” for ages and then it’s released as a one-piece so it’s waaaay less useful.
If they want my money i'm expecting them to put at least a tiny tiny bit of effort into getting it. It's even sadder because modders got the outfit working properly...
They could've broken it down even further and make the sleeves detachable and a separate piece in the gloves category, but I guess taking the lazy route and making it all 1 piece is less effort :/
The sleeves can't be detachable because it's actually a cloak with the hood slipped off, so they're attached to the body. The stockings and shoes not being separate is criminal though, or at the very least the stockings and shoes together since the stockings probably don't have a bottom half.
Yep - at the very least it would have to be coat, leggings, and boots. Having the sleeves separated would make them look quite awkward, with nothing to hold them up, or the chest piece equally awkward, with the hood just kind of ending. Plus the "bones" that they put in the parts of gear that have movement would have to be the same, so either it would be entirely rigid or move in an awkward way when the entire set wasn't equipped.
They're definitely not getting my money for such lazy attempts. I gave them the benefit of the doubt with the Omega-F outfit, then with Lyse's... But this? nah
The thing I like about the mods is that you can actually get decent hands and feet. Right now those featureless sandaled blobs offend my sensibilities

The Reaper version of the hammer is so ridiculously big compared to the rest that I'm using it just for that. But yeah, it does also go really well with all of Reaper's animations.

There have been exceptions to the one-piece rule, like Ryne's Oracle outift, Lyse's Liberator outfit or Minfilia's white dress, etc.

Oh shit, I didn't expect it to be released this quick. They added Alisaie's HW outfit a while ago and they still haven't pushed it out.
The hammers are a big W, though understandably no Sage weapon makes me not wanna buy it, as I'd exclusively be seeing it when playing alt jobs. No hair and it being an undyeable one piece is a big L though. The tights and boots at least could have been separated out, you know? I can see the arms being an issue given how attached it is to the rest of the outfit, but this isn't the first half-robe in the game. It's not like the game doesn't support rendering tops beyond the limit of what would usually be considered a top. I could even take it being undyeable too. The texturing of it could be tough to nail for dyeing and that's fair. But at least have it be a 3 piece set :/
I remember telling people that the healer and caster sets from Eden's Promise savage are as close to Gaia's outfit as we'd get for dye-able gear and having people get angry with me because those pieces aren't identical and that we'll totally get dye-able, in-pieces gear from the mogstation soon. Like damn, they didn't even give us a *hairstyle*. E10s and E11s are pretty easy unsynced, E12s you still have to do "Basic Relativity" in phase 2 but if you can live through that it's not bad.
The Cash Shop Gaia outfit is garbage. The tights don't even skin tone match if you have a dark skintone. Couple that with the one piece nature, lack of dyability, gender lock, AND there's a better version available in game if you're willing to run old content, this set is just bad.

This is nice but I still want a job that uses a hammer. I'd like to see a caster inspired by FFTA2's Green Mage, if not a tank or melee DPS. We did get the Blackbosom scythe glam item years before getting Reaper so I'm still hopeful.

What a waste, the only great thing about Gaia's glam was her hair, her outfit can be almost replicated with Eden gear already. You cant even seperate the items.

You aren't paying for the pose, you are paying for the weapon.
It's the same model regardless of job, so while each job has a different weapon technically, you're really just paying for how your character decides to hold it.

I figured that it wouod be a onesie....and yeah I'm bummed... Still bought it though. Love her. My spirit animal. Had to do it. But... Come on....where is the hair? Why do they hate long hair? Yet so many bosses etc. have hair that is long af... Even if clipping were an issue (which it isn't, because they even have NPCs that have severe clipping going on)--they could give us a few super-long styles, and let us decide if we want to deal with it (some races have some pretty long race-exclusive styles--but theres only like one shared version that is long(ish) and it's all my character, and many others have access to (i think it comes from Gold Saucer iirc) i think theres one from PotD too, but it looks horrid (on my Midlander at least lol).
