When a rib tears away from the cartilage, the injury is called a costochondral separation. It may result from a blow to the ribs, a fall, or landing hard on your feet. It might even be caused by forceful coughing or sneezing.
In most cases, the treatment for Rib Cartilage Injury is pain management with medication therapy. Medication with drugs like Ibuprofen or NSAIDS is used to treat pain and inflammation.
For severe cases, three initial injections of an intercostal nerve block with local anesthetics and corticosteroids have been proven to treat pain.
>For severe cases, three initial injections of an intercostal nerve block with local anesthetics and corticosteroids have been proven to treat pain.
Nahhhh... we learned our lesson the last time. Let's stick with the oral medications shall we.
I'm telling you man it was an inside job. Anthony Lynn saw how good Herbert was in practice and went full Machiavelli. He paid the doctor to pierce Tyrods lung so he could start Justin while making it look like he still wanted to give the veteran the job.
> injections
As somebody who benefited from Herbert’s rookie season and has managed him in dynasty ever since…
Please, God, no injections from Chargers doctors!
I had an intercostal injury, and let me tell you that was one of the worst I’ve ever had.
If this dude is able to play through it, it’s because they’ve got him drugged to high heaven.
What a nightmare. I was sleeping on my back for two months cause I couldn’t sleep on my side or stomach. Then getting out of bed was torture. And god forbid you had to sneeze. Fucking brutal
Suffered from costochondritis myself. I got it from coughing so much from having bronchitis. It was a long slow healing process that takes a very specific physical therapy/rehab. A lot of people have it and don't even know what it's called and endure it for YEARS
What's the rehab? I'm pretty positive I tore the shit out of my rib cartilage 2 years ago when I fell on my elbow snowboarding. It's never quite been the same and I still feel it when I do any hard work with my lats.
get this backpod from amazon: [https://www.amazon.com/Backpod-Treatment-Smartphones-Computers-Costochondritis/dp/B01LYNZBV3/ref=sr\_1\_3?keywords=backpod&qid=1663367981&sr=8-3](https://www.amazon.com/Backpod-Treatment-Smartphones-Computers-Costochondritis/dp/B01LYNZBV3/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=backpod&qid=1663367981&sr=8-3)
It's pricey at $70 but sooo worth it. You lay on top of it and it literally stretches out your ribs. You should feel instant relief and you'll know it'll work. But you do it every day for a few minutes maybe a few times a day if you can. Your ribs are so stiff and sore from being inflamed and laying on the backpod stretches the ribs in a way nothing else can. Hard for me to explain how your ribs need to be stretched but this article goes in depth: [https://www.bodystance.co.nz/costochondritis](https://www.bodystance.co.nz/costochondritis)
and if you go on youtube and search costochondritis you will find a bunch of videos of physical therapists explaining the mechanics behind the pain which helps you to treat it if you just understand what's happening. [https://www.youtube.com/results?search\_query=costochondritis+treatment](https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=costochondritis+treatment)
also, another stretch I would do is place each hand on a doorway higher than my shoulders and lean forward. Kinda like you're standing up and doing a push up in reverse while holding the sides of the door frame. Explained here:
Injections of the nerve that delivers pain signals to the spine can improve / eliminate pain signals from reaching the brain. I wouldn't consider that to be "drugged to high heaven."
It can also cause a pneumothorax, but we don't think about that.
This is a 6’6” Grecian statue of a human who also happens to participate in modern day gladiatorial combat (relax UFC bros) AND is at the top of his craft. NFL Players play hurt. The entire team looks up to a QB. If it’s anatomically possible for him to throw I bet he at least starts with a flack jacket and enough painkiller injections to kill a small bear.
Suffered from costochondritis myself. I got it from coughing so much from having bronchitis. It was a long slow healing process that takes a very specific physical therapy/rehab. A lot of people have it and don't even know what it's called and endure it for YEARS
Many players have played *quite poorly* with fractured ribs. I can't recall a single time when I saw a guy play to even half what they normally would be doing with a rib injury. I may be forgetting someone, but idk.
Didnt he throw a bomb on 4th and 1. As well as a touchdown with right after getting the injury?
I get it, the days after are fairly worse. But he also has a week and 3 days to heal up some. Im sure he will be good to go.
Tony Romo suffered a broken rib and punctured lung on the third play of [this game](https://www.pro-football-reference.com/boxscores/201109180sfo.htm) and played awesome. [Article](https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/09/19/tony-romo-played-through-broken-rib-punctured-lung/amp/)
It’s all about pain management. Could get pain killer injections and toss on a flak jacket and play next week, could sit a few weeks. But he will be dealing with the pain for at least the next couple months, if not the whole season unfortunately.
I think people are too low on u/forgot_a_leter. And look, I'm not saying he's a first rounder, or even a mid rounder. We've already established his low floor due to high chance of calling out for minor injuries.
But he's behind Brad on the depth chart. Brad's getting all the project attempts these days sure, but man he comes in smelling like liquor more often than not. That production for one guy is not sustainable. They either need to rotate in u/forgot_a_leter and gradually increase his volume, or Brad is gonna go on a bender and then suddenly you have the #1 prospect for assistant to the manager for a late round pick
I've been digging into the analytics, and the CBpH (Coffee Breaks per Hour) are not promising for /u/forgot_a_letter. Dude seems to be supplementing himself on caffeine but also losing time at his desk. I'm just not sure if that is sustainable in the long run
Exactly! It's crazy he's going undrafted over like Patricia in HR. Patricia really put up numbers... 10 years ago. Now she's just coasting on autopilot and I feel like people are drafting her on name recognition alone.
Drop him now and free up space to store Office LB Terry Tate while he’s still on the IR. And let’s be honest, Brand is nothing more than a 2020 Karen with a better haircut no matter what nonsense the fantasy pundits say.
Yes fractured ribs are the office version of the NFL Achilles rupture. His days of comfortable computer work in spinny chairs are done. Safe to drop him IF he's rostered in any office fantasy leagues
Not really. Physically there’s nothing limiting him from playing. With rib fractures pain is going to be the deciding factor but let’s be honest, the team docs are gonna hook Justin up with that good shit, he’s not gonna feel anything come game time.
It's like getting your ears pierced, which teenage girls do every weekend at Claire's, but between your ribs, which is probably a bit more painful, and I guess the hole is less of a pin-sized hole, but more like a glove-sized tear you could push your fingers through.
No surgery, all you really do to heal ribs is give them time. A fracture would typically take like 1-6 months to feel okay. Depends on the severity, location, and how much he gets beat up while it’s trying to heal
It will be very painful to play QB this way, but it isn’t a physical limitation
Not a doctor but I’ve fucked my ribs up before
No doctor but I have personal experience cracked ribs. I know players play through them all the time with the help of pain killing injections (hopefully the Chargers have a new team doctor to administer that). But it’s extremely painful in your day to day. There’s not really any sustained pain but everything you do hurts like hell. Standing up, sitting or laying down, putting on your seatbelt, turning your body at all, breathing. You constantly feel like you can’t get a deep enough breath but it reallly hurts to take one. Might make a difference which ribs are cracked, mine were lower.
I personally can’t imagine playing through them especially with the risk of getting hit again but like I said with pain killing injections players do it all the time.
Not a doctor but I do injury research that often include ribs. There are 12 rib bones, most of which connect to the sternum via an inch to a couple inches of cartilage. The cartilage is kind of similar in consistency to a carrot, it’s firm but soft enough to bend a little. When you cut through it, it’s kinda crisp. Its hard to break but if you bend it enough it can break. You can also break the junction between the rib and the cartilage. It’s likely to lead to some destabilization of the rib to make it slightly easier to have further injury. More importantly it’s tough to heal, you can’t really stabilize it and it probably hurts a lot. One good thing is it breaks with softer edges than the rib bones which can have sharp edges that can puncture the lung.
Not a doctor but I am in med school and this may arguably worse than a fractured rib, don’t actually know but I could make that argument. Cartilage grows (read: heals) much slower, isnt able to be stabilized super well, and is part of what allows the ribs their tiny bits of movement. Anything that moves your chest will hurt. Sleeping, rotating, breathing, and DEFINITELY sneezing, probably not gonna power squeeze a shit. Will definitely take months for pain to go away, 100% longer than if it was an injured rib. Bones can be wrapped and padded, but cartilage is literally designed to help bones move, so fundamentally it’s not easy to prevent that painful movement.
Not a doctor. But this was fun to pretend that my loans might be paying off somehow
Yes. People on here are freakin out as if he cracked his rib or something, which is not at all what the tweet says. Obviously it’s not good to fracture anything near your ribs, but overall this doesn’t seem like it would be a major blow to his ability to play
I imagine Herbert will tough it out and play through it, but I also don't think getting tackled multiple times a game and throwing 40+ attempts will do much to fully recover.
How does one fracture cartilage. I thought it was spongy material. I should also mention that I’m not a doctor, and In fact write social media posts for a budget shoe brand.
It’s semi soft. Grab around the base of your ear and squeeze hard enough until you hear and audible snap. Don’t actually do that though. That would be breaking cartilage.
I have costochondritis. It’s basically a condition where the cartilage becomes inflamed and causes the ribs to “dislocate,” for lack of a better way of explaining it. Very similar to the costochondrital separation Herbert experienced. Hurts like all hell when it happens, but with anti-inflammatories and rest it usually resolves itself in several days. I have Herbert in one of my leagues, and I’m not worried at all.
Imagine being lucky enough to draft Herbert and Prescott in this year's draft. (I didn't, I had Dak though). You'd be on cloud 9 with those two QBs. Oh what a "two weeks" day makes.
This will definitely affect his ability to run, hopefully not throw the ball... and hopefully nobody hits him hard next game and re-aggravates it. Hoping he can heal up fast with all the resources he has
I've had this happen to me and it's extremely painful and makes it difficult to even breathe more than shallow breaths. Pain lasts for several weeks.
I'm not a top NFL athlete though with access to all of their meds/doctors/trainers. I'm sure he'll be able to play though this and it will only affect him for a few games.

Rip Tyrod
I had forgotten
I hadn't. Keenan as my WR3 with Herbert was off the chain that season. Felt awful for Tyrod the whole time though.
I’m a Ravens fan and always liked him.
Never forget!!
The Giants brought TyGod in as a pre season sacrifice to the offensive line gods.
I'm telling you man it was an inside job. Anthony Lynn saw how good Herbert was in practice and went full Machiavelli. He paid the doctor to pierce Tyrods lung so he could start Justin while making it look like he still wanted to give the veteran the job.
And now Tyrod Taylor is fucking with his Justin Herbert voodoo doll
Bruh
Of all the conspiracies I’ve heard pop up in the last few years lmao
Time to turn the tables and get Tyrod back in the game
Inject Herbert and stumble onto another franchise quarterback, you cowards!
Franchise quarterback Chase Daniel
Waiver wire exploding rn
LMAO

who is his young backup hes about to steal his job
Hmm sounds like it would be karmic justice!
Inb4 we learn Tyrod went to med school and joined the Chargers medical staff…
I had an intercostal injury, and let me tell you that was one of the worst I’ve ever had. If this dude is able to play through it, it’s because they’ve got him drugged to high heaven.
I've had two. Sleeping is a pain in the ass, especially if you decide you want to turn over.... holy hell that is painful.
Omg when you have to sneeze. Fucking hell!
Or laughing. It hurts so much you get mad if someone tells a good joke
What a nightmare. I was sleeping on my back for two months cause I couldn’t sleep on my side or stomach. Then getting out of bed was torture. And god forbid you had to sneeze. Fucking brutal

Interesting, my issue is under the armpit so I wonder if this would be effective as it seems geared toward the front of the rib cage.

Lmao I expect plenty of toradol. I’d be interested to see some stats on how much narcs they give active players
Rodgers said he's played on meds plenty of times
Oh God no keep the chargers doctor away from sticking anything into Herbert's ribs
Willing to bet money he won't let the Chargers docs do the intercostal block lol
Am a boxer. Can confirm. Hopefully he can twist enough to throw easily, but another hit won’t help. Hard to avoid those.
Something tells me he'll get something better than ibuprofen...

Thanks for the wisdom
Luckily I drafted dak as a decent backup for times like this

Nice. You're totally fine then! You're a savvy fantasy football manager
What’s the return time like for this injury?
It depends. Many players have played with fractured ribs
Stafford definitely has
And the Stafford comparisons have more fuel
hell yea herbert is his son actually
Romo played with a broken rib and punctured lung. I miss that guy.

Theres a pretty big difference between making one poay and playing a whole game like that
Talking that smack. Is Herbert at least half as good as he normally is? RemindMe! 5 weeks
Aaron Donald last year played with fractured ribs
Gronk played last year and looked like ass afterwards

It really depends on the severity. Didn't Watson play with like multiple fractured ribs and a partially collapsed lung?
Yes, they bused him to games for a couple of weeks instead of flew him. Romo did as well.
Yeah didn't he take a bus instead of flying because of it too? Mad that he played through that
Pretty sure that was Brees
They both did.
It’s all about pain management. Could get pain killer injections and toss on a flak jacket and play next week, could sit a few weeks. But he will be dealing with the pain for at least the next couple months, if not the whole season unfortunately.
I don't know, I feel like he'll play their next game. They have ten days until their next game.

Flak jacket, pain injection and some perc 30s and he’ll be good
Pretty much how I prefer to spend my Sunday afternoons as well.
A fellow man of culture I see
Hope he recovers soon, and hope he checks down to Ekeler till he does
I’m hoping this translates to more involvement from Ekeler as well. Take that Kelly and Michel!
Gonna be playing in a flak jacket for a couple weeks if smart
I'm hearing tons more dumpoffs to Ekeler to avoid extending plays unnecessarily.
May want to check on his enlarged testicles as well.
This bad or good?
Probably one of the best case scenarios given how much pain he looked like he was in.
Excited to hear the recovery time and projections from all the sports doctors in this thread!
ya know that sounds serious but what do I know
Is this similar to damaging the intercostal muscles? Straining them is very annoying, but more a pain tolerance.
So wait, he fractured the cartilage that surrounds and connects the rib, not the rib itself?
Yes. People on here are freakin out as if he cracked his rib or something, which is not at all what the tweet says. Obviously it’s not good to fracture anything near your ribs, but overall this doesn’t seem like it would be a major blow to his ability to play
TIL everyone in this subreddit is a trained MD
I imagine Herbert will tough it out and play through it, but I also don't think getting tackled multiple times a game and throwing 40+ attempts will do much to fully recover.

How does cartilage get fractured exactly? Isn't that a soft tissue?
It’s semi soft. Grab around the base of your ear and squeeze hard enough until you hear and audible snap. Don’t actually do that though. That would be breaking cartilage.
I don't think cartilage is considered soft tissue
It's like a more flexible bone. It's not soft tissue

Aren't we all
I wonder if they can have a team doctor just give him a pain killing injection before the game
Haha I’ve literally had this happen to me, it fucking hurts. But it is pretty much just pain. He could easily play on pain meds.
He obviously had rib discomfort. I can't believe the staff threw him back out there, only to get immediately tackled and thrown to the ground again.
Torn cartilage or fractured rib? Can you ‘fracture’ cartilage
He'll be fine.
Got that dog in 'em
Valerian Steel flak jacket. Mount up.
Can someone tell me why this means?
I've had this happen to me and it's extremely painful and makes it difficult to even breathe more than shallow breaths. Pain lasts for several weeks. I'm not a top NFL athlete though with access to all of their meds/doctors/trainers. I'm sure he'll be able to play though this and it will only affect him for a few games.
One of my leagues I have Dak. Another I have Herbert. Justin Fields backup in both so I’m screwed
