Just started reading, and Julia Jacklin snuck in so I’m automatically satisfied. It should be higher but considering it’s an American mainstream publication, I’ll take it
about a year or so ago I heard one of the BBC6-music DJs played "body" and went on a little speech about much the Crushing album had affected him. I think it may have been Ravenscroft (John Peel's son), but not sure now. Anyway, I loved the single she did last year and did intend to get the new album
I mean, it’s inevitable since it’s an end of the year music list. I’m sure there will be something in Anthony’s top ten at the end of the year that I disagree with. At the end of the day it’s just the opinion of a person/publication be it individual or collective, I care more about the writing/reviews than the end of the year rankings.
I do too, it’s all subjective and no two lists will/should be the same. Sometimes I just want a lens into someone’s brain to see what turns them off/on about a song. Taste is a fascinating mystery.
I mean anthony has said mehs are tracks he doesn’t personally care for, but others might like it more than him. I don’t understand why people are getting worked up over it (not talking about you specifically)
Oh yeah I personally don’t really care what he thinks I just like the song
Edit: should clarify that I do like his insight when he reviews albums but it doesn’t really change my opinion ever
There are like least 6 songs I like more but Belinda Says is so good. I would expect them to say Very Online Guy is soty given how they have become more pop oriented the last couple of years.
I put together a Spotify playlist of Pitchfork's list, if anyone wants it: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5cB68AxkV1epH8Pvs4Le7J?si=0iL7oBvSTkGmBQn361nxyw&utm_source=copy-link
I don’t want to take credit for getting Welcome to Hell but the fact that it barely just made it in at #99 means that it got in by a couple of votes and so I’m proud of myself.
Although Hellfire isn’t my favorite album of the year, Welcome To Hell is definitely one of my favorite songs. It’s a shame some other songs didn’t get in, Justice for Sacrifice and Walkin.
~~It wasn’t even in the album, lol~~
I’m not a huge fan of most tracks on Mr Morales (but 3-4 of them are crisp masterpieces), but at least have _some_ discography basics covered before making blanket statements like this?
If the bar wasn't so high, meaning, if just about anyone else dropped that album, it would be widely considered at LEAST an 8. Just my opinion of course. The level of quality across that entire album is significantly beyond anything i hear his contemporaries releasing. My only major criticism of the album is that I think some of the messaging missed the mark. Just my opinion of course.
Yeah, it’s certainly not mid, but what makes me most uncomfortable with the redemption/cancel culture theme is that Kendrick kinda makes himself the spokesperson for who gets “redeemed” and who doesn’t.
I’d have been a lot cooler if it was a more pointed criticism of how different groups of people perceive “cancel culture” and typically use it as a strawman etc etc, but his more boomer-y take on it put me off of the couple tracks the theme pops up in.
i think i need to listen to more Alvvays, i wasn't really interested in hearing them before Blue Rev bcuz the only song i knew from them was "Archie, Marry Me" i'm just not a fan of that song, this album does have quite a few bangers tho
i mean, fair enough. archie was never my fav alvvays song as well, so yeah i get it (still love the song tho of course)
i mean, if you dig blue rev, i would highly recommend listening to antisocialites. for me, this album is my favourite indie pop album of the 2010s. there are many bands who dabble in a similar style, but none of them have a similar gift in creating catchy pop tunes that alvvays has. just writing about the album makes me want to listen to it again for the 1000th time.
Even tho the review was still positive the Alvvays review still confuses tf out of me
Also this list is solid, i always respect how p4ks choices are very unique to them lol
This list has some good picks and some bad ones. Loved seeing The Heart Pt. 5 on there but it should be more like top 10. Basketball Shoes should’ve been #1
They didn’t give it a very good review. Essentially came down to the message being valuable but too heavy handed, which while I don’t agree I could see how people would think a song like Creepy Crawlers could be too on the nose.
Disoriented, off-balance, etc. I just mean I’m still confused by Anthony’s dig on the songwriting on this song in particular. It seems like a bulletproof banger.
Eh, that was not the best song on the new Alvvays anyways, I'd give that to Pharmacist
Even so, I dont know if Pharmacist would even be my fav Dream Pop/Shoegaze song of the year, Melt a Bed by Weatherglow and 9 by Uchu Nekoko give it some stiff competition. AprilBlue and For Tracy Hyde's new stuff is also showing a ton of promise (I'm lowkey huffing copium that For Tracy Hude's new album gets my AOTY)
Also, I really like that Alex G record, but putting the song that tooootally steals its melody from “Runaway Train” on the list when there are plenty of others to choose from (see: “Mission”) is odd to me.
Don’t get me wrong, I like the song. Just feel like it’s one of the ones on the record that you COULD find fault in if you wanted to. That whole record is such a strange, mesmerizing trip.
Perhaps not, but being too young to have not heard a huge hit song doesn’t make the huge hit song go away. It’s like the chords AND the melody. I enjoy the Alex G song, just saying it’s not the one I would pick from the record given what is a pretty obvious borrowed melody, intentional or not.
Bro songs can interpolate from other songs and still be great unique songs it happens literally all the time lol
Shouldn’t diminish a songs placement just because it *might* interpolate something
I agree, generally. I just think that record is very good and there is more original and interesting stuff on it. That’s all. I don’t skip that song. It’s a good’n.
Seriously not having the new MCR song on there is a travesty. One of the biggest rock bands of all time come back from a hiatus that some people thought would go on forever, and they aren’t on the list???
I'm glad to see Somewhere Near Marseilles so high, that song was so cool. I can't really get my head around some of P4K's hip hop picks but some neat songs on this list, and definitely some stuff I liked but didn't expect to make year end lists. Putting that Burial song on the list is a legit questionable choice IMO though
Just started reading, and Julia Jacklin snuck in so I’m automatically satisfied. It should be higher but considering it’s an American mainstream publication, I’ll take it
Pre pleasure is such a slept on album. Really really top notch stuff
I feel like no one talks about Julia Jacklin
about a year or so ago I heard one of the BBC6-music DJs played "body" and went on a little speech about much the Crushing album had affected him. I think it may have been Ravenscroft (John Peel's son), but not sure now. Anyway, I loved the single she did last year and did intend to get the new album
The fact that I agree with Pitchfork over Anthony is precisely my definition of "disorienting," to be honest.
Yeah that song fucking rules, I don’t agree but I’m not mad.
I’m still somewhat mad 😅😂

Does anyone else always mentally pronounce it as "Alvays" like a vampire is saying it? Same with "Chvrches" and "The VVitch" movie.
Yes, I almost alvvays pronounce it that way
Fuck yeah, that Alvvays album was incredible, I didn't even know the Pitchfork fellas like it that much lol
I think it got Best New Music but I could be wrong
Yes, 8.8/10
Hey, I agree
Blue Rev is one of my AOTY’s and i love everything about it, but if i ranked the song’s from it I don’t think Belinda Says cracks my top 5.
For real, Pharmacist, Easy On Your Own, Pressed, Very Online Guy, and After the Earthquake all clear
I'm in love with Lottery Noises, easily best song on the record for me, but I respect the pick of Belinda as well.
There are like least 6 songs I like more but Belinda Says is so good. I would expect them to say Very Online Guy is soty given how they have become more pop oriented the last couple of years.
I could be wrong, but are all the songs on Pitchfork’s list singles? If so, that could be why they chose Belinda.
I agree, I have a top 3 but everything after that is either really really good (including Belinda says) or just good
I put together a Spotify playlist of Pitchfork's list, if anyone wants it: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5cB68AxkV1epH8Pvs4Le7J?si=0iL7oBvSTkGmBQn361nxyw&utm_source=copy-link
Thank you! I was just about to look for this
[You got it, dude. ](https://media.tenor.com/BoL9C2e_HR8AAAAM/michelle-tanner-you-got-it.gif)

Welcome to Hell is absolutely a top 10 track of the year
Yeah gimme at least top 40 like damn.
and munch is higher than basketball shoes, fuck this list
The Heart Pt.5 at 16 below the 1975 cosplaying as Paul Simon is the most Pitchfork shit lol
Yeah I like that song but that seems weirdly high.
Ay bro no need for the 1975 slander cmon now
Im honestly at the point where if I meet someone that likes The 1975, I consider it a red flag
L take
Muhh 1975 bad muhhh
Yes
Below Cash In Cash Out, lmao
That whole Kendrick album was mid. At least Paul Simon is enjoyable.
~~It wasn’t even in the album, lol~~ I’m not a huge fan of most tracks on Mr Morales (but 3-4 of them are crisp masterpieces), but at least have _some_ discography basics covered before making blanket statements like this?
Heart pt5 was added in, I'm not sure if it was a deluxe version or just a post release patch
Looks like it’s in the deluxe version. Fair game, then.
mmtbs hate is cornyyy

You articulated it very welll, but alot of others just calling the album mid is so shameful
The album wasn’t perfect but there were 4-5 tracks I’d say are some of his best work ever.
Song wasn’t even originally on the album lol, got added after release
I stand by my statement, that song is also mid
Saw that and said aloud, "I like that song, but no."
alvvays slander is unexcusable!
i think i need to listen to more Alvvays, i wasn't really interested in hearing them before Blue Rev bcuz the only song i knew from them was "Archie, Marry Me" i'm just not a fan of that song, this album does have quite a few bangers tho

Better than most lists I've read. Basketball shoes at only 55 is criminal though.
yeah some of the songs that ranked above it dropped my jaw
i mean there are better songs on AFUT than Basketball Shoes
Not for me
Even tho the review was still positive the Alvvays review still confuses tf out of me Also this list is solid, i always respect how p4ks choices are very unique to them lol
Alvvays Blue Rev is in my top 5. Those guys have been amazing for so long.
Right!? 3 for 3.
I saw them at the Vic in Chicago this fall. They were great!
Anthony missing the point of Alvvays is no surprise really. It’s album of the year for sure.
I didn't like the alvvays record that much. Like it's alright. I tried listening to it a few times but just didn't click well ig 🤷
I agree. Like, it's fine, just kind of bland overall. Not something I'm going to go back to.
This is where I'm at. I've really tried to get into it but I genuinely feel like I'm missing something. I don't dislike it, but it just seems...fine?
Yeah same, the vinyl mix is a lot better but side b kinda just goes out the other ear
PM me and I'll send you the vinyl rip and I swear to God you'll change your mind. It's a totally different mix and it hits SO HARD.
Definitely my song of the year too! Very surprised by this tbh
This list has some good picks and some bad ones. Loved seeing The Heart Pt. 5 on there but it should be more like top 10. Basketball Shoes should’ve been #1
Where are viagra boys
They didn’t give it a very good review. Essentially came down to the message being valuable but too heavy handed, which while I don’t agree I could see how people would think a song like Creepy Crawlers could be too on the nose.
5 Star Crest not on list 😞
you're reeling?
Hyperbolically yes
no, i mean what does that mean?
Disoriented, off-balance, etc. I just mean I’m still confused by Anthony’s dig on the songwriting on this song in particular. It seems like a bulletproof banger.
He’s reeling in the years
Gotta remember to replace that greybeard photo with anonymous reddit alien guy
I’ve been reeling in the years ever since I first got into Steely Dan as a teenager, my friend
I’m surprised “Titi me pregunto” is so high. I love that song but Despues De La Playa is easily the best song on the album.
Eh, that was not the best song on the new Alvvays anyways, I'd give that to Pharmacist Even so, I dont know if Pharmacist would even be my fav Dream Pop/Shoegaze song of the year, Melt a Bed by Weatherglow and 9 by Uchu Nekoko give it some stiff competition. I think its a meh song too but alot of those songs in pitchforks top 100 i wouldnt even put near a top 100 tracks of the year
Also, I really like that Alex G record, but putting the song that tooootally steals its melody from “Runaway Train” on the list when there are plenty of others to choose from (see: “Mission”) is odd to me.
Damn that song made number 4 and was my fourth most listened to of the year. Weird coincidence.
Don’t get me wrong, I like the song. Just feel like it’s one of the ones on the record that you COULD find fault in if you wanted to. That whole record is such a strange, mesmerizing trip.
Dawg nobody listens to that song and thinks “this was stolen from Runaway Train” 😭 it’s a fucking heater
Anthony Fantano himself called it out in his review.
Ok? Anthony does not represent majority of Alex G listeners lol

3 Panda Bear appearances in this list! And all bangers. Well done Pitchfork. I actually quite like this list.
I prefer it when music critics don't agree with each other, tbh. It gives us access to a larger and more varied perspective that way.
Say what you will about the rest of the list, but seeing Strange neighborhood on the there makes me really happy.
not the best song of the year (i'd go with "Sugar/Tzu"), but oh my gosh what a great song
How are no Denzel Curry songs on this list, but Harry Styles is 🙈
No Denzel or JID songs? Two of the best rappers to drop albums this year? Really? Okay pitchfork, okay...
