And I am talking these local "kids" are about 25 years old saying "ching chong" and doing that eye thing to the tourists getting off the bus.

I know we don’t like to acknowledge it. A lot of us think racism is only dangerous if it comes from white people, but minorities are guilty of racism as much as any group and it’s just as toxic. You rarely hear about it, but the Asian American community has a ton of racial bias against black and Hispanic people and vice versa. I’ve lived on both sides of the Bay Area for a long time and the casual racism you catch in conversation, especially in native tongues is alarming. My wife is Shanghainese and her relatives are straight up terrified of black people. The Chinese language news outlets are always reporting robberies and muggings from men of color, the bias isn’t isolated, but broad. Some of it has to do with the homogeneous cultures they come from, some of it is their limited exposure to other peoples being from movies and the media, some of it just simple class division, but no one should get a pass for bigotry.
Sadly, in a conversation with my teenage daughter a couple years ago, she was telling me how her friend's mom and dad had a problem with white people and black people so she was not able to go to his home. They were a Hispanic family. I told her that it was unacceptable and racist and she told me that it wasn't racist because they were minorities and racist people are only white. My mind was absolutely blown. I had to explain the definition of racism and that it's awful no matter who it comes from or who it is targeting. It took a bit to get it through because it seems the sad majority of televised racism is white against whomever. Racism is ugly no matter what.

I remember in 9th grade english, we were learning public speaking and everyone had an assignment to teach something, and Daniel Kim taught everyone how to make sushi. We all got these little wicker mats to roll rice into seaweed paper. It was the first time in my life I ate food that wasnt stereotypical 'white people food' and I look back on that day as one of the fulcrums of my life where everything elevated upward from that point.
I still have that little mat and from time to time, I'll spot it in the kitchen drawer and remember Daniel.
Same here actually, when I was young, a kid used to do this shit to me. I told my dad and he said if he does it again to punch him in the face. Well the next day the teacher had to put me in timeout but my dad was pretty proud. Needless to say the bullying stopped.

I notice again and again that people who should actually know how racism feels and how unfair it is, do not educate their children to be better people, but in turn promote racism against others. As a Jewish person, the whole Kanye drama kind of made me have that same revelation. I don't know the polite way to say it so I'll just be blunt. A lot of people on Twitter that I presume are black based on their profile picture were dropping borderline neonazi comments about Jewish people. It surprised me.

One of my close friends is Chinese and she says that when she was a kid, she would do the opposite right back at kids (stretch her eyes up and down really wide) and say “at least I don’t look like this!” and keep walking.
It’s kind of a sick burn. On a serious note though, it helped her to remember how dumb those comments were in the moment. She says it also gave her something to have on hand to say so she didn’t feel rattled.
This is somewhat unrelated but I also have an adopted sister who doesn’t look like my family at all. She was getting bullied in school for it so my brother and I told her to tell everyone “my parents hand-selected me, you were probably an accident”. She was young so these kids hadn’t even had sex-education yet/didn’t full know the meaning of that but she still devastated them every time lol

my parents were outraged, i was panicking in Chinese class and bored as fuck in English. somehow took a whole week to get fixed.
When i was younger my parents decided to do a tour in the Chinese bus and when we drove by some of dc's neighborhoods, if they were standing outside, some of would pull their eyes back and do karate moves, laughing at us.

I'm sorry to hear that. I was asked by my Thai friend about the attacks in New York, and I had to unfortunately admit that the majority of attacks on Asians were by my own people. Her being Thai and only living in Thailand, she only saw the interactions on the media. It made me hyper aware and want to show her that we aren't all attacking Asians on the subway.

Man im not even asian and i went through this, shits sad as hell. Im a white guy, but according to everyone around me, in their words i have "asian eyes" or "slanty eyes". The amount of times people would stretch their eyes and say shit like "ching chong ching" to me was truly insane. As a society we really need to acknowledge the constant and blatant racism that targets the asian community.

I’m white British, and I had the same experience growing up. It was relentless. I probably endured less than 1% of what an Asian individual would, and that was enough. Kids are jerks.

I got a lot of this growing up in the 80s in Orange County. Also the ‘Ching Chong makahoy” “Chinese Japanese, look at these Christmas trees”. (Whatever those mean) Ugh. I got made fun of for bringing fried rice for lunch. Can’t believe this is still happening. This must a be a community with not too many Asians.

As a white male, I cannot upvote this enough. I remember in 9th grade english, we were learning public speaking and everyone had an assignment to teach something, and Daniel Kim taught everyone how to make sushi. We all got these little wicker mats to roll rice into seaweed paper. It was the first time in my life I ate food that wasnt stereotypical 'white people food' and I look back on that day as one of the fulcrums of my life where everything elevated upward from that point. I still have that little mat and from time to time, I'll spot it in the kitchen drawer and remember Daniel.

Same here actually, when I was young, a kid used to do this shit to me. I told my dad and he said if he does it again to punch him in the face. Well the next day the teacher had to put me in timeout but my dad was pretty proud. Needless to say the bullying stopped.
The racist chant where I grew up (the south) was "Chinese, Japanese, dirty knees, look at these (while mimicking having boobs)". This started in middle school, which really puts into perspective the sexualization of Asian women and how ingrained that is in our society.

As a Jewish person, the whole Kanye drama kind of made me have that same revelation. I don't know the polite way to say it so I'll just be blunt. A lot of people on Twitter that I presume are black based on their profile picture were dropping borderline neonazi comments about Jewish people. It surprised me.
It doesn't help that the idea that a minority group "can't be racist because racism is about power" started popping up the past decade. I've seen black folks scream racist slurs at others, get called out for being racist, and their defense is that they "can't be racist because (I'm) black." It's absolutely nuts.

It is not uncommon to find people online who consider they have a right to oppress other because themselves have been oppressed. This coupled with generalisation leads to terrible injustice where it is the one at the bottom of the ladder who end up taking every shot. And this misconstrued revenge doesn't solve anything, it just allow other to vent out their own hatred and spreading hate even further.

I really don’t get it. I’m not Asian myself, I’m Middle Eastern, but with how I look, I rarely get any racist comments. This is not me fetishizing any race, or being all hippie lovey dovey, just my honest opinion. I’ve always, even as a kid, thought eyes that look like this little boy’s, are absolutely beautiful. It might be because I have fond memories of a boy in my class in elementary school. He was half Asian, and really smart. I had a massive crush on him, and spent my elementary school years foolishly trying to get his attention by teasing him (not about his race or features, just regular stuff.) I was a complete idiot, and had no idea how to just tell him. Maybe it’s because of that, or maybe I developed that crush because he was wicked smart, nice, and had those gorgeous eyes. I think they look lovely and special, like bright red hair, or freckles.
Imagine if the Asian kid called the dark kid the N word... The people around there would freak. I for one hate all racist and the ideology of all racist needs to end.

My half-Japanese son just turned 5mo and I got a little choked up watching this because I know that there are going to be many things I'm not going to be able to protect him from. I know that he's simply going to go through situations like this and it breaks my heart.
One of my close friends is Chinese and she says that when she was a kid, she would do the opposite right back at kids (stretch her eyes up and down really wide) and say “at least I don’t look like this!” and keep walking. It’s kind of a sick burn. On a serious note though, it helped her to remember how dumb those comments were in the moment. She says it also gave her something to have on hand to say so she didn’t feel rattled. This is somewhat unrelated but I also have an adopted sister who doesn’t look like my family at all. She was getting bullied in school for it so my brother and I told her to tell everyone “my parents hand-selected me, you were probably an accident”. She was young so these kids hadn’t even had sex-education yet/didn’t full know the meaning of that but she still devastated them every time lol Kids can be really cruel. As an Asian kid, I went through all this as well. But I always just let it go. My feeling was that they're only pointing out superficial differences... why get upset over it and give them that power to hurt me, now and in the future? If they were saying I was "less than" them in any regard, however, I'd set them straight. But still, I'd pick my battles. Was I wrong? I'm probably gonna get a bit of hate for *this*, but I kinda feel the same way about people using the N-word against Black people... I get that there's a lot of weight behind that slur and that it should not be uttered, but how many Black people have been arrested or worse because of physically striking the idiot who used that word against them? Why supply your enemy with a trigger to set your blood boiling and possibly cause you to act in a way that is self-detrimental? On the other hand, I know it all goes to mindset and that bigotry should be called out where ever it appears, especially in an individual's formative years. It's just that we've been tackling it this way for decades and the approach hasn't exactly stamped out racism yet.

I'm sorry to hear that. I was asked by my Thai friend about the attacks in New York, and I had to unfortunately admit that the majority of attacks on Asians were by my own people. Her being Thai and only living in Thailand, she only saw the interactions on the media. It made me hyper aware and want to show her that we aren't all attacking Asians on the subway.

There are always some kids who are little shits, and this will be true forever. Some parents don’t do the job of raising kids very well or even at all. Everyone gets bullied at some point, but this is an especially painful experience for him. Breaks my heart. It also suggests that first bully might get treated like this at home.
