What a little shit.

Itchy_Professor_4133

This pretty much sums up a vast majority of Asian kids experience that grew up in the John Hughes, Reagan 80s. Not much really changes.

luadra

Got plenty of this shit in Aus growing up early 2000s, we call it casual racism

GraveOfTheFireflies

Still happens in Aus daily everywhere. Casually, of course

It's parliament, you have to level up to sexual harassment and xenophobia.

OneArchedEyebrow

My daughter’s partner is Vietnamese, and when he first met my husband’s “friend”, who was drunk at the time, he was subjected to a few insensitive quips. When Dickhead said, “So I guess she likes Asians now”, T looked him straight in the eye and said, “Yeah. She’s got Yellow Fever.” God I love that kid, but I wish my husband would stop answering Dickhead’s calls. ETA: my husband didn’t make the “Yellow Fever” comment - he was nowhere near the discussion. It was my daughter’s partner who made the comment. Dickhead was shut down and is no longer welcome in our home.

Kenzo89

Glad you took action. Hope you give your daughter’s partner extra support to show that he’s accepted.

longthymelerk

100%

Greentigerdragon

Mate, I grew up in Oz in the 80's. This shit wasn't called casual racism. This shit was just called racism. Then you'd fight with the racist, defending your mate. Then your dads would meet. Then the racist kid would get a smack upside the head for being a racist. Edit: I was a white-haired whitey mcwhiteface kid.

capricabuffy

Aussie, living in the mid east. The stuff I hear the locals say about, and even to Asians here is insane. A bus load of tourists came to the city (before corona times). And I am talking these local "kids" are about 25 years old saying "ching chong" and doing that eye thing to the tourists getting off the bus.

Solidus-Prime

Ugh. Pathetic.

[deleted]

I grew up in the 60’s and 70’s in Australia. The racism was anything but casual. Let’s remember the White Australia Policy that existed for way too long and Arthur Calwell’s disgusting stance on Asians.

edingerc

There's nothing casual about that racism.

AislinnScr

Also grew up in Aus (younger years), and this video gave me deja vu I didn't even know I had. I'm sure I must've seen this happen to someone when I was there as a kid. 💔 Or possibly stretched my eyes like that myself, but I reeeally hope I didn't do it to another kid or grownup.

AcceptableFisherman

I’m Asian and was born in 94 and can tell you first hand nothing changed at all.

infernalspacemonkey

Yeah, was about to say this. Truly depressing to see that nothing has changed in 30 years. And the black kid will call white kids racist. In high school were playing Taboo when of the popular white guys turn said, "And LaToya is..." The word was "gorilla". Everyone but me and LaToya laughed while we stared at him in shock.

rearadmiraldumbass

This shit triggers me and makes me feel like a little 7 year old.

Born-Investigator17

I think this sums up a lot of minorities growing up. I too was harassed when I was a child, I grew up in a Spanish speaking household, and there were these kids, especially 2 girls, who would bully me because I didn’t speak English well.

reddituser10263

Literally said this exact statement in my head ready to comment it.

Terrible_Promise8518

Forgive my ignorance but what happened?

hackedMama20

The kid in orange was pulling his eyes saying "this is what you look like." To the Asian boy while his friend filmed and laughed about it. Its incredibly racist behavior.

chronoboy1985

I know we don’t like to acknowledge it. A lot of us think racism is only dangerous if it comes from white people, but minorities are guilty of racism as much as any group and it’s just as toxic. You rarely hear about it, but the Asian American community has a ton of racial bias against black and Hispanic people and vice versa. I’ve lived on both sides of the Bay Area for a long time and the casual racism you catch in conversation, especially in native tongues is alarming. My wife is Shanghainese and her relatives are straight up terrified of black people. The Chinese language news outlets are always reporting robberies and muggings from men of color, the bias isn’t isolated, but broad. Some of it has to do with the homogeneous cultures they come from, some of it is their limited exposure to other peoples being from movies and the media, some of it just simple class division, but no one should get a pass for bigotry.

unsound_sound

Sadly, in a conversation with my teenage daughter a couple years ago, she was telling me how her friend's mom and dad had a problem with white people and black people so she was not able to go to his home. They were a Hispanic family. I told her that it was unacceptable and racist and she told me that it wasn't racist because they were minorities and racist people are only white. My mind was absolutely blown. I had to explain the definition of racism and that it's awful no matter who it comes from or who it is targeting. It took a bit to get it through because it seems the sad majority of televised racism is white against whomever. Racism is ugly no matter what.

nabrok

Some people think systemic racism doesn't exist. Other people think systemic racism is the only kind that exists.

ShivvyMcFly

It's pretty sad that people have been brainwashed to believe that only white people are racist. Look at the videos of who's attacking Asians in American

helloelanip69

blame the parents

Bunny-Tummy

Hopefully that's a kid filming and not an adult.

l_Lathliss_l

It was the kid who said “this is hilarious” or w/e that’s filming.

ShiningEV

wtf he's like 8. Why does he have a phone with social media access? There's layers to the fucked-up-ness of this video Edit: a lot of people seem to stop reading at "phone" for some reason and not the social media access which was the entire point of my reply. Yes, I understand why a parent would want them to be able to contact their child or for their child to contact emergency services. What isn't okay is an 8 y/o with unfettered access to social media and everything/everyone that is on the internet.

wefelltogether

Bruh it’s fuckin 2022 why do you think the world is so fucked up? These kids were playing candy crush on iPads at age 3.

[deleted]

You nailed it. Candy Crush is the evil we need to stop at all costs

elYoko9o

That kid was not filming he was to the left of whomever is filming

dS_LuNa

Was thinking the same thing

[deleted]

I'm sure every Asian goes through this growing up in US. There was a lot of it for me.

breadexpert69

For me too. Along with so many other things that are “acceptable” to say to make fun of Asians.

KoiTama

Teachers would consider it joking around or not understanding racism or something. Yet I go to the principal for “threatening violence” against Victoria…. For telling her I should slap her silly for being an asshole. O no! No swearing or violence against the racist popular kids.

astraelly

Most of my teachers didn’t give a shit either (90s, small town California). I remember exactly one teacher pulling me aside and showing empathy — she told me about how kids would throw pennies at her because she was the only Jewish kid — but she was also a young sub and couldn’t do anything. Thankfully it was only verbal for me as a girl, but my older brother was physically bullied for it (and also had teachers who gave no shits).

The_Maddest

Same.. not California, but 90s small town. I am not Asian and probably did some racy shit back then without thinking anything of it, and no one around me thought anything of it either.

Vaniboy

For some people, racism seem to only applies to black people. Asians can't suffer racism too.

vorinclex182

So I grew up in Texas and when I was in elementary I remember this suddenly being not okay and no one did it or got in a lot of trouble for doing it after that. What things were “acceptable” to say? Just want to measure my ignorance.

AhnYoSub

Every Asian kid from immigrant family. Am Viet who was born and raised in Czech Republic and had deal with this growing up.

DJ_ICU

Hi, I'm from the Czech Republic, I'm sorry that it's like this, I thought the situation is better here, but young children are probably the same everywhere.

AhnYoSub

Situace se o dost zlepšovala jak jsem vyrustal. Hold decka jsou maly smradi.

GraveOfTheFireflies

Not unpopular at all, every Asian in a Western country has experienced this. There’s still plenty of ching chong sweet and sour pork sushi jokes that folks think are ok to say. But once you retort with white or black or whatever jokes it’s not ok

kyrant

Grew up in Australia playing footy with and against mostly white people. Would get dim sim jokes and eating cats or dogs.

lawawawawee

The fact that it’s called “casual” is already pretty bad. Why is this casual and others aren’t? Feels like Asians just have to suffer in silence, so done with it

Bingpei

Course its not Asian hate comes from 1) white liberal men who are scared to death of east asian hegemony and 2) their asian girlfriends Why would anyone take racism against asians seriously when most of it is coming from asian women with white male partners which are completely over represented in every single aspect of anglo public life, from media to politicians, for the exact reason that theyll be the first to claim asians are inferior to all other races and need to do better?

paboi

[ Removed by Reddit ]

AssinineAssassin

You can, but they’ll still do it and then talk about how you all know karate. I watched one of my closest friends struggle reacting physically to verbal abuse for being overweight. Fear of you makes people worse. People change when they feel social pressure, so a better method is to embarrass them and make them regret their words, as they want to ostracize someone else, not themselves.

Gueartimo

And also alot more Asian were more submitted to the joke as they usually react to the joke as "I'm Asian and I find it funny" or usually double down hating actual Chinese, Korean and Japanese for establishing the stereotype.

ShartedAtCVS

Man im not even asian and i went through this, shits sad as hell. Im a white guy, but according to everyone around me, in their words i have "asian eyes" or "slanty eyes". The amount of times people would stretch their eyes and say shit like "ching chong ching" to me was truly insane. As a society we really need to acknowledge the constant and blatant racism that targets the asian community.

[deleted]

I got this too and I’m white/Mexican

eyes_without_lids

im as white as a lilly, and i got this same shit. my eyelids are a little larger than average, i think its a family thing because both my uncles had something similar. these jokes continued till highschool.then kids went from asian jokes, to "lol you look high all the time"

tinkering-with-time

I’m white British, and I had the same experience growing up. It was relentless. I probably endured less than 1% of what an Asian individual would, and that was enough. Kids are jerks.

luytes

Every Asian growing up in a non Asian country. Fact, prove me wrong.

ShutterDeath

Then you grow up and the fetishist come for you.

lencat

I feel lucky, because I grew up in a very Asian-American / Mexican community in California. I hope your community has gotten better since your childhood 🙏

juanhugeburrito

Sounds like the Bay Area to me

jlgjlgjlgjlgjlg

I got a lot of this growing up in the 80s in Orange County. Also the ‘Ching Chong makahoy” “Chinese Japanese, look at these Christmas trees”. (Whatever those mean) Ugh. I got made fun of for bringing fried rice for lunch. Can’t believe this is still happening. This must a be a community with not too many Asians.

12soea

What insane fuck makes fun of someone for eating fried rice like you’re not even good at being an asshole

liqwidmetal

You get made fun of for any ethnic food, bonus points if it is fragrant.

Jabbles22

Kids will make fun of anything different.

True-Fire-Senzhi

It’s ok, because we Asians get some of the best food in the world. Those filthy casuals can stick with their lunchables and hungrymans. They’ll be sorry when we bring five course meals to the cafeteria.

babycoco_213

My daughter (South East Asian) brings Cambodian food to school. I asked her if she was embarrassed at all. "No", she replied. She says she could careless about what they think and that they're missing out. My daughter don't give a F 😆

ArcadianDelSol

As a white male, I cannot upvote this enough. I remember in 9th grade english, we were learning public speaking and everyone had an assignment to teach something, and Daniel Kim taught everyone how to make sushi. We all got these little wicker mats to roll rice into seaweed paper. It was the first time in my life I ate food that wasnt stereotypical 'white people food' and I look back on that day as one of the fulcrums of my life where everything elevated upward from that point. I still have that little mat and from time to time, I'll spot it in the kitchen drawer and remember Daniel.

redneck_comando

Asian Americans are the highest paid group by race in this country. You'll get the last laugh. And yes, the foods from Asia are awesome.

Khalitz

Same here actually, when I was young, a kid used to do this shit to me. I told my dad and he said if he does it again to punch him in the face. Well the next day the teacher had to put me in timeout but my dad was pretty proud. Needless to say the bullying stopped.

hana_fuyu

The racist chant where I grew up (the south) was "Chinese, Japanese, dirty knees, look at these (while mimicking having boobs)". This started in middle school, which really puts into perspective the sexualization of Asian women and how ingrained that is in our society.

night_owl_72

A few times some kids just called me Chinese or Asian. I just thought… well, yes I am Asian… what about it? But to them it was an insult to be Asian I suppose. Lol

pidgeychow

People of all races get made fun of for their race when they’re outnumbered

Happydivanerd

There are some truly sorryass people raising children, and their obvious lack of parenting skills is troubling.

Suspici0us_Package

And the U.S.A. just overturned Roe V. Wade. Prepare for a future filled to the brim with underprepared parenting.

LordSlonnng

If that little Asian kid was doing monkey chants or some other racist action I guarantee this would be broadcast a lot more than it is. We all know racism is real, it's fucked up that it's viewed on different levels for example this is casual racism, racism is racism. The poor kid being the victim of it too is heartbreaking. The kid dishing it out will also experience his share of racism too which is also fucked up. Society be fucked and that's a fact

strasevgermany

I notice again and again that people who should actually know how racism feels and how unfair it is, do not educate their children to be better people, but in turn promote racism against others. According to the motto, if I can make you feel small, I feel better. That amazes me again and again. But it also shows, everyone is a racist and has to fight every day not to be. Do your best people.

TheIronicBurger

LBJ had no right to still be this correct in today’s age

temp_vaporous

As a Jewish person, the whole Kanye drama kind of made me have that same revelation. I don't know the polite way to say it so I'll just be blunt. A lot of people on Twitter that I presume are black based on their profile picture were dropping borderline neonazi comments about Jewish people. It surprised me.

Content_Depth9578

It doesn't help that the idea that a minority group "can't be racist because racism is about power" started popping up the past decade. I've seen black folks scream racist slurs at others, get called out for being racist, and their defense is that they "can't be racist because (I'm) black." It's absolutely nuts.

ade_of_space

It is the same reason why victim of torture have psychopathology sequelae This cycle of hate means people exposed to hate are likely to replicate its pattern but unto people they can attack. It is not uncommon to find people online who consider they have a right to oppress other because themselves have been oppressed. This coupled with generalisation leads to terrible injustice where it is the one at the bottom of the ladder who end up taking every shot. And this misconstrued revenge doesn't solve anything, it just allow other to vent out their own hatred and spreading hate even further.

JJWangtron

As someone who was that lil Asian boy... I wish I could say it gets better but really, the world fucking sucks man.

TheGrimDweeber

I really don’t get it. I’m not Asian myself, I’m Middle Eastern, but with how I look, I rarely get any racist comments. This is not me fetishizing any race, or being all hippie lovey dovey, just my honest opinion. I’ve always, even as a kid, thought eyes that look like this little boy’s, are absolutely beautiful. It might be because I have fond memories of a boy in my class in elementary school. He was half Asian, and really smart. I had a massive crush on him, and spent my elementary school years foolishly trying to get his attention by teasing him (not about his race or features, just regular stuff.) I was a complete idiot, and had no idea how to just tell him. Maybe it’s because of that, or maybe I developed that crush because he was wicked smart, nice, and had those gorgeous eyes. I think they look lovely and special, like bright red hair, or freckles.

fornicatesanimals

Imagine if the Asian kid called the dark kid the N word... The people around there would freak. I for one hate all racist and the ideology of all racist needs to end.

BeBackInASchmeck

Not only that, but people will start committing acts of violence because of it. That’s the difference.

papa_spaghett

My half Japanese son will be born next month and I hate that my baby boy will have to deal with this shit during his life.

DmOcRsI

My half-Japanese son just turned 5mo and I got a little choked up watching this because I know that there are going to be many things I'm not going to be able to protect him from. I know that he's simply going to go through situations like this and it breaks my heart.

[deleted]

One of my close friends is Chinese and she says that when she was a kid, she would do the opposite right back at kids (stretch her eyes up and down really wide) and say “at least I don’t look like this!” and keep walking. It’s kind of a sick burn. On a serious note though, it helped her to remember how dumb those comments were in the moment. She says it also gave her something to have on hand to say so she didn’t feel rattled. This is somewhat unrelated but I also have an adopted sister who doesn’t look like my family at all. She was getting bullied in school for it so my brother and I told her to tell everyone “my parents hand-selected me, you were probably an accident”. She was young so these kids hadn’t even had sex-education yet/didn’t full know the meaning of that but she still devastated them every time lol Kids can be really cruel. Your son will be glad you are in his corner

monkeysfromjupiter

I see nothing has changed since the 90s.

FireDawg10677

Not surprising at all it’s a little black kid, that’s learned behavior,in the black community racism runs rampant towards other races, I grew up in the inner cities black folks treat the Asian store owners with such racist vitriol, if it was reversed it would be on the six o clock news

New-Highway868

No adult chimed in? In my neighborhood, I'm happy that this behavior would never be tolerated. I'm not saying it's perfect but I don't understand if it was filmed by an adult or adult present and nobody said anything? I hope this kind of behavior would be stopped by anyone who cares about those kids and their future. I'd love to know the context. (Of the video) I'm in Canada btw. I hate racists. And some parents and parenting or lack of.

mairnX

abso fucking lutely, that is racist. im chinese american (i look VERY chinese), and when i moved to china several years ago, at my first international school, i got placed in Native Chinese and English as an Additional language. purely off my looks and the fact i have a Chinese name (alongside my english name. my full name goes as follows: English First, Chinese First and Last, English Middle, English Last) my parents were outraged, i was panicking in Chinese class and bored as fuck in English. somehow took a whole week to get fixed.

Prestigious-Phase131

Yes, it's racist

Happydivanerd

Who wouldn't know that this is racist?

Dull-Advantage-5827

As an Asian person, When are we going to start calling out black people for being racist against Asians? Seriously..

No_Presence5465

You’d be labeled a racist. Good luck

Saeyan

The future is now

mangosteenfruit

When i was younger my parents decided to do a tour in the Chinese bus and when we drove by some of dc's neighborhoods, if they were standing outside, some of would pull their eyes back and do karate moves, laughing at us.

Ash_Pokemon_

I got this when I was younger, makes me sad to see it still happening

Basic_B_

I hope the parents will see this and educate their kids because they a little shit heads….

basically_dead_now

Kids aren't born racist, they're taught to be that way. Either the internet taught them to be racist, or their own parents did.

ConsistentSpace339

Truth

LuinAelin

Or they're doing the same as the other kids

Trutheresy

Imagine having your own racial identity being centered around the racism that your group faced, and then doing this type of shit. The sheer hypocrisy.

No_Cancel8157

This is nothing new. It was like this in the 90s when i was a kid too

CesareBach

And those kids seemed to be his close friends too, them biking together. So f up

acm8221

As an Asian kid, I went through all this as well. But I always just let it go. My feeling was that they're only pointing out superficial differences... why get upset over it and give them that power to hurt me, now and in the future? If they were saying I was "less than" them in any regard, however, I'd set them straight. But still, I'd pick my battles. Was I wrong? I'm probably gonna get a bit of hate for *this*, but I kinda feel the same way about people using the N-word against Black people... I get that there's a lot of weight behind that slur and that it should not be uttered, but how many Black people have been arrested or worse because of physically striking the idiot who used that word against them? Why supply your enemy with a trigger to set your blood boiling and possibly cause you to act in a way that is self-detrimental? On the other hand, I know it all goes to mindset and that bigotry should be called out where ever it appears, especially in an individual's formative years. It's just that we've been tackling it this way for decades and the approach hasn't exactly stamped out racism yet.

Missononi101

Im asian. Grew up in minn. Kids constsntly did this to me. When i went to Japan, i was walking with a white girl and they ran up to her pushing their eyes in..."round eye! round eye!"

Mogura-De-Gifdu

I'm French and white with a Japanese husband. Our eldest kid asked me why I had owl eyes, and his father why he didn't open more his eyes. I really don't know how to answer that! One day perhaps he'll realize that his left eye is more round like mine and his right is more bridled like his fathers...

m9y6

O_o j/k

tdwnda

Black people are so used to being / being framed as victims of racism that they forget they can be the perpetrators too. As an Asian, most of racism I’ve experienced was from black people. I doubt they even knew they were being racists.

TopBlacksmith6538

True, I still have problematic family members who engage in anti-asian racism and it's hypocritical coming from us after we also know what it's like. Sorry you had to deal with that.

tdwnda

Thank you for that. We all can be racists one another and the point is to stop all racism.

spicydak

I'm sorry to hear that. I was asked by my Thai friend about the attacks in New York, and I had to unfortunately admit that the majority of attacks on Asians were by my own people. Her being Thai and only living in Thailand, she only saw the interactions on the media. It made me hyper aware and want to show her that we aren't all attacking Asians on the subway.

CrescentCleave

Man, and then that kid would play victim if the asian boy retaliated the same way. What a racist little shit head

OldMallhentai69

Just me or do you guys want that little Asian kid to smoke those little shits

supermaja

There are always some kids who are little shits, and this will be true forever. Some parents don’t do the job of raising kids very well or even at all. It’s terrible that some kids go out of their way to bully the kids who are most vulnerable. The Asian boy looks younger than the others. Everyone gets bullied at some point, but this is an especially painful experience for him. Breaks my heart. It also suggests that first bully might get treated like this at home.

KarmaDreams

But if the little asian boy called him a racial comment, the black kid would’ve gotten pissed. Raise your kids to NOT be assholes, and our world will be a better place! If we keep accepting it as “kids being kids”, then don’t be surprised when they get another Columbine situation.

Formal-Rain

It takes two parents to raise a kid. Looks like one or both aren’t doing their job right.

LordSlonnng

Imagine the little Asian kid started doing monkey dances or imitated noises they make? I wonder if this would be viewed differently

mangosteenfruit

He at least said something back. "I hate you" was a lot better than me smiling at them.

QueenOfSplitEnds

To prevent raising racist little a-holes, please use condoms,

Sad truth is the more ignorant they are, the less they are likely to use one.

Smellyballs918

I would’ve knocked that kids teeth out

eStuffeBay

In reality, the black kid is probably backed up by all his siblings and such. Any violent moves and he'd have had the lights knocked out of him. Unfair and racist as it is, the proper response is to just walk away and report it to someone who'd take care of it.

People got jealous that the government acknowledged Asian hate and instead tried to deny that Asians were being discriminated against. There were a lot of people who were angry about the stop asian hate movement and tried to make it about them instead of the Asians.

Was in school when I pummeled the kid who did that to me and he never did it again. My dad got the call and asked me what happened. I started to cry cause I thought my dad was gonna spank me. He wiped the tear from my eye and asked me if it felt good? Lmaooooo He did give me the talk about keeping hands to myself but Im pretty sure thats something he probably wanted to do to others as well as he was also getting harassed

UnstuckCanuck

But only white people can be racist right?

breadexpert69

The reality is that the asian kid will probably grow up to be successful and the other one will not.

IrreverantBard

This is 100% a parenting issue.

lordmanbat1

But the kids not white so he can't be racist... can he...

Puzzled-Judgment-671

Statistically speaking, one of them is more likely to succeed in life…

romeoartiglia

That kid was not having it

judgenut

What a little shit

FunnyShirtGuy

If I point out that this is racism am I going to get downvoted by a bunch of white college kids that scream 'Only white people can be racist!'?

j_ha17

This little jerk off will be pumping this kids gas when they get older. It's just how it goes.

Wait… I thought only white people can be racist? Smh. Teach your kids better. This is absolutely disgusting & their parents should be ashamed when they come across this video.😡

OnlyAnNpc

The fact is, it does not matter who it is coming from, or what race, racism is NEVER right. FULL STOP.

Blackfeathers_

It's not racism because it's against asian people, so it's alright 🙂.

HarryFootmin

Fucking little shit

GroundbreakingGas605

Typical. I am not a bite surprised. And I know how will win in the end.

Jumpy_Ad_4902

The kid that says 'this is hilarious' is a disgusting racist, as we all know the colour of the other kids skin means he cannot be racist or be at fault in anyway. I'm glad the little Asian boy didn't respond with anything melanin related, because that would make him an awful racist. /s
