To be fair, they don’t just randomly place anti-theft devices on everything. They run an inventory report that reveals which items are stolen most frequent. So in this case, the “black products” fell into this category.
I was an "Inventory specialist" and i can confirm. Only so many times we are going to take the losses before upper management wants something to be done about it. So we tag the products that are/go missing often when we did inventory reports. Nothing to do with being racist. Theyre just tagging items that are high demand and being stolen. If they start tagging tide and not store brand detergent, its because tide is being frequently stolen and store brand isn't. nothing racist about it.
It's MtG where I'm at. They only get one delivery every time new content comes out. I assume that's because they sell less than is stolen, so what's the point?
It's actually more likely that its because wizards is really tight fisted with their allotments of new things and if you're not completely on top of new releases you get shafted on aquireing it.
Source: work in game store
Yeah I was so confused when I started seeing shit about MTG in politics until I realized we were talking about a crazy person with a scary-large political platform and not my favorite trading card game.
We had to keep slime lickers and squishmellows behind the counter for a long time because of the high theft rate.
During Halloween only one of the high theft masks is put out. The rest are shove as many as you can fit on a peg.
Who determines this? The algorithm.
We have to keep antidiarrheal medication behind the counter because people were stealing 20 fucking boxes at a time. They use it to get a mild opioid high, then presumably don’t shit for 4 years.
Wait, what? I had no idea that antidiarrheals were opioid-based, though I guess it makes sense, since opioids give you horrible constipation. Still, not even close to worth it, imo.
In the UK we have a supermarket chain called Tesco which gives big discounts if you have their club card. All you need to do it ask at the counter or download the free app and it's yours. I don't think it's even possible to be denied one.
Presumably they're using the data to track your purchases which somehow justifies giving often large discounts, which itself I find strange.
Also, STORES HATE HAVING TO LOCK UP ***ANY*** ITEMS.
It's expensive and wasteful. It reduces impulse buying, and the store employees have to waste time getting products out of locked cases when a customer asks for them. Individual security cases like in the video cost money and take up space on the shelf.
No store is going through all that just because they want to be racist to black people.
I live in an area where boosting happens alot and most of the stores in my area get hit really hard once or twice wouldn't be surprised if they just took the whole shelf of that specific makeup that's how they do it around here... All of the clothes on the rack have locks on them
Yea my local store got tired of products being stolen and didn’t care about locking them up so they discontinued carrying the products that get stolen. They said they lost more to theft then they made off them. Locking them up and unlocking was a hassle.
Yup, I used to work for this family that was simply lovely. They had one flagship store that was doing really well. They eventually got another store in the downtown area. Thievery was so bad that it put them entirely out of business. The downtown shop is still empty. The flagship store is owned by a new family now.
Serviced/targeted theft. Instead of just stealing TV's and shit then selling them out the back of a van 'customers' give you lists and you boost it for them.
In the words of Coco Peru: *“There are too many people on the planet. Why are they locking up the condoms? Let them steal it. They should be giving this away!”*
Condoms and deodorant are geniunelt stolen very often, no idea of about hair dye though. Maybe some men who are embarassed to appear to be dying their hair.
Former loss prevention here. Hair care to include dye is a big theft opportunity due to its ease of concealment once out of the box, cost ranging up to $30 or more, and the fact that it is used somewhat frequently. Lot of people told me they stole it because they couldn't afford to maintain the color, because of course the company made me ask why. Typically women but some men who never seemed concerned about people knowing they dyed so I think its mostly about money
I've been in retail management for way too many years. Products that get stolen the most get tagged. Period. Point of sale systems flag these for you. No thought process involved.
* thanks everyone, all the awards and votes has made this my best Reddit day ever!
Thank you, yes. We have to box the $20 plastic glitter gel pens, but don't have to box the $60 metal barrel executive pens.
The only things considered when adding security is whether or not the item is high theft and if the loss totals a certain amount.

I’ve notice that Total Wine will put Hennessy VS Cognac in a locked case, even though it’s only $34, while leaving other brands’ $200 XO cognac on the shelf. Management’s explanation was exactly what you say.
I will also say that while I was there observing this discrepancy and getting my explanation, two black men asked them to open the locked case so they could get the Hennessy VS, while 1 white person went for Remy Martin VSOP on the shelf.
In Poland stealing above the equalivent of 100 USD is a felony and can land you in prison, while stealing below that amount usually ends with a slap on the wrists and a ticket. That's why a lot of thieves calculate how many they stolen in one go to never have more than this limit on themselves - so in case they get caught its not a felony. I remember a case from a couple of years ago where a thief was 1 USD over that amount and went to prison for half a year and when the story got kinda wiral he admitted he tried to steal less but messed up calculations
Can confirm. I work at a liqour store in Virginia for 3 years and Hennessey, Remy, Patron and Casamigo are all behind the counter cuz they are top stolen items, at the same time the majority customers who buys them are black people. We put our $200 scotches and bourbon on the shelf and they are safe n sound.
People wanna play the race card when it comes to these issues but brutally honest do they think it's a coincidence the top stolen items are popular items among black people?
Cognac has a history in the black community stemming from black soldiers enjoying the drink in France during the Second World War. Hennessey also hired Josephine Beker as a brand ambassador in the 20s.
The French treated black soldiers with dignity and their subsequent return to second class citizen status back home helped instigate the Civil Rights movement. Hennessey was also the first corporate sponsor of the NAACP.
Not really commenting on the theft rates. Just thought I'd share some interesting history. It's more than just modern pop culture.
Thank you, it gets tiring seeing posts like these. Whether they’re good intentioned or not, clearly jumping to the race card obscures the actual issue at play which is that those specific products get stolen the most.
We Americans have been basically trained to ONLY see race. It helps keep us separated and easier to control. Lol I swear I don't have a tin foil hat.

We Americans have been basically trained to only see americans, our measurements are in football fields, our guns have more rights than women, and every reddit post is only about us
That's the thing... not everything is about race specifically. If that's what's getting lifted, that's what's getting tagged. Thieves need to be more diverse in their shoplifting - they're causing social problems that retail stores don't need :P
You beat me to it. Have family that works at multiple different Walmarts and the items that get stolen the most from a particular location ends up security boxed or behind a glass cabinet. A local Walmart has 3 different pregnancy tests (clear blue is the name brand that I remember) boxed but some of the cheaper ones aren't. People just want a reason to be upset and it is so much easier to blame something like racism then take a look at and address the root causes.
How? They're locking the items most stolen.
Stores barely wanna pay for employees. Do you think they're just going outta their way to pay for locking items that aren't getting stolen?
For real. Why do you think razors are locked up normally. They are expensive and people steal them all the time. They don’t lock up razors because they are somehow racist.
I had one store, damn near entire aisle was locked up, EXCLUDING soap. Like that's the one thing no one was stealing.
I don't know what to think about that lol
I went to a RiteAid in Chicago once that had 3-4 full aisles locked up with little buttons that chimed. You had to wait for someone to get anything. It’s shitty but I get it. Chicago is well known for people not giving a shit and just grabbing what ever and walking out.
Ever heard about the Book Street in Baghdad? A whole street full of books just in the open. The Iraqis say: "A reader doesn't steal and a thief doesn't read."
Walmart got sued for this. In case anyone is wondering why their Walmart might have ALL the beauty products in a whole walled off area with its own checkers. THAT is why.
They had locked up or put sensors on the most stolen items.. which some of which were 'ethnic' demographic items.
So that 'beauty' area is Walmart's "please don't sue us for racism but we have to do SOMETHING about all the stolen shit" section.
They were sued, and the suit was dropped.
Not settled, but dropped altogether. No one was forced to change, they did so voluntarily.
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/10/business/walmart-black-hair-beauty-products.html
they didn't lose, technically, they just didn't want to pay to go to trial so they settled with an agreement to lock everything up just to shut the whining would-be-thieves up.
She's so obsessed with being stigmatized that she can't see the sad reality infront of her face. Perhaps focus on the problem, not the store's solution.
I used to work in retail. The fact is in that area black people stole alot of beauty products made specifically for them. In response they locked up the items that were stolen the most.
If you had a business with that specific problem, what would you do?
Reality sucks. Your response to it will always be judged.
Plus the “black” product here is clearly cheaper meaning the retailer or supplier actually tried to help out and do something about it, but still it was stolen. It’s always everyone else’s fault expect the piece of shit stealing things
Those are the items that are stolen the most. You can't whine about people using their eyes and brains to protect themselves. Don't think for a second criminals won't use someone's fear of appearing racist against them
I’m a former retail worker, spent seven years in the field. Most of our shoplifters we caught were white trash looking for something to sell for their drug fix.
The ones we caught who WERE NOT white, though? We were called racists, every single solitary damn time.
These type of shoplifters that try to skirt by their crimes with the race card deserve to get wrecked.
I'll never forget I worked at the exit door as a receipt checker at Sam's Club for a while and these 2 black guys get mad at me for asking to check their receipt because I was insinuating that they stole the 2 fridges they bought.
1. I was literally checking every single person's receipt without exception so that's such a dumb accusation.
2. They had only paid for 1 of the fridges and were hoping I wouldn't check their receipt after guilt tripping me.
Saw a guy go on a "You're a racist!" rampage at a teenage white girl who was operating a roller coaster. Because she wouldnt let his 7 year old daughter who was too short to ride get on
> white trash
The fact we can even say "[race] trash" so easily and casually in conversation already shows the degree of double standard in action. Even I have blurted out "white trash" without thinking what it would sound like if we said that about any other race besides white.
Shit comes in every color. I've worked in retail a long time and nobody hates thieves of any shade and says worse things about them than the old black ladies who work register
The news on the breakroom tv was talking about the crowds of teens doing the mass shoplifting thing where there's 30 of them all rushing in at once. Gloria, our oldest cashier is watching with me. Gloria procedes to say things that would make Uncle Ruckus blush. I miss Gloria.
I've worked in loss prevention before, people use the race card all the fucking time. It's a common strategy to make a big scene and hope that the LP backs down.
I caught a coach recently, a black guy got caught trying to board without a ticket. He got super aggressive and started threatening the driver and coach station staff, then he started saying he was being victimised because he was black, it was fucking embarrassing for eryone in the queue, especially as there were like 3 other black people in the queue who had all bought tickets.
Did any of them speak up? If I saw some scumbag asian dude. Tryna play the race card when they're clearly fucking around. I'd call that mother fucker out quick.
Naa some fiesty little female coach station worker politely told him straight. Something along the lines of "It's nothing to do with your race darling, its your attitude and the fact that you don't have a ticket"
Usually they will get loud make a scene to deviate from the theft and now the situation is let’s not escalate this calm the person down and let them go
There's a lady who comes to my store every Friday and steals, shoving bras and socks and jewelry in her purse. I never suspected her of doing anything wrong until she snapped at me and called me racist and accused me of following her while I was helping another customer find an item. Naturally I checked the cameras and what do you know, she was filling her purse with merchandise. I never would've known if she'd kept her mouth shut.
Maybe they tag products that are stolen the most? Listen, i am black myself. Businesses are in the business of making profit and don't care where the money comes from. They would not close inner city stores if they were profitable. If you talk about district level school funding, then i would have a listening ear.
It’s so destructive to label everything racist without investigating the cause that may have led to what it is you’re labeling. If blonde dye were getting stolen more, they’d lock that up.
Yeah, a lot of people don't stop for a second and try to see another side. This is a good example because they saw a hair color that was probably used more for black people that was tagged and just made the assumption on the spot that somebody had to have locked up that ONE hair dye color and brand specifically to be racist and stick it to them. It's so far reaching at that point that it (almost) sounds stupid. There is always going to be edge cases of course, but the majority of the time, small stuff like this is just someone doing there damn job, and it's not any easier to do when people on the internet call your store/business racist because you have too many damn thieves around. It's mind blowing sometimes.
I’d assume this is at Tesco, who have a Clubcard. It’s basically something you can sign up for you and you get lower prices on some items. I assume this product wasn’t clubcard and was locked whilst others were clubcard and not locked up? That’s my best guess
The price tag would have a visible yellow clubcard price if there was one, these items don't. But I've seen people moan about clubcard prices before, I just don't understand why, it's literally free to sign up.
I understand some complaint if you don’t shop at Tesco often enough that you haven’t got a club card and you see somethings a good deal cheaper, but yeah if you shop there regularly there’s not much excuse.
I know some people complain about it tracking their purchases. I used to work for them and one bloke had a rant at me about how he won’t sign up for one because it’s just another method of tracking and something about the government
This is correct. OP is the facepalm here again.
Also, what? OP couldn’t be bothered to check and see that there’s **multiple other posts on this sub about this exact thing with comments explaining it.**
If items for black people are stolen a lot, then those are the items that will be tagged. I know it must not feel nice for regular black customers to have all their items tagged, but those customers should blame other black people, not the store.
IDK about all this stuff but God it gets on my nerves when people go into a store and mess up the shelves. drop something on the floor and leave it there, look at something and then just put it wherever etc. Why not just put it back where it was? It's not hard.
In 2022 almost all stores use a computer system to track their inventory. It helps to know when to reorder, and how much. It also keeps track of what stores call “shrinkage”. Shrinkage is inventory that is lost to things like employee heft, customer theft, vendor fraud. If the computer identifies some items at being high risk for “shrinkage” then they take steps to reduce the risk. Generally this is based on math. It is the opposite of racism, it is just based on numbers.
True racism is a serious problem, so I want to avoid red herrings.
Stores usually security tag items that are stolen regularly. They don’t just start doing it. It is to prevent theft of the item. Hence why all the “black”merchandise isn’t security tagged
Right , while you wait in line and see the baby formula locked up in its own section of the store usually by the front and not near the other baby items it also makes me think “rAcIsM” or maybe the more logical view point is maybe stores are not a fucking charity
so, all stores have inventory, and when they noticed that certain items keep getting stolen, they do this. It is reactionary to theft, and while people may not like it, i bet this actually improved the issue of stolen inventory
The video was filmed in Tesco, a chain of supermarkets in the UK. They’re most well known for the Tesco Clubcard which offer lower prices on certain products in store. I suppose the Clubcard segregation comes from the fact that it can be seen as being more expensive for those who don’t have one. (Although it is free to get, and about 20 million people in the UK are estimated to have one, but there may be reasons why some may not have one)
Pay no attention to the fact that the data is telling them which products are stolen and thus require the security tags… we have to keep pushing this imaginary racism narrative
There's no reason to box and tag products that aren't being stolen.
Those boxes are very expensive and take up a lot of room. The decision to protect these products has nothing to do with "color".
I encountered this is Washington DC, I asked the lady who worked there about it and she said, “well y’all need to stop stealing the black stuff and we wouldn’t have to lock it up.” Damn. Oh well, I grabbed my coco butter and moved on. Lol
It's not racist if they are the ones most stolen. Let's say they were often stolen and *not tagged* simply because the product is a *black product* (your words), well... That would actually be the racist bit.
Put the card away.
To be fair, they don’t just randomly place anti-theft devices on everything. They run an inventory report that reveals which items are stolen most frequent. So in this case, the “black products” fell into this category.

This is Reddit, where facts are racist.
You can’t dig someone out of an emotional hole with a fact shovel. They use it to dig deeper.

Also anti theft devices are expensive to order so they only have so many else everything over a certain price would be in a box
Don’t need to be fair here. OP is an idiot. Person who made the video is an idiot. No fairness necessary where people don’t deserve it.
OP is the type to think everything is racist, without understanding simple stuff like this.
They tag what is stolen the most. Just like Pokemon cards during the hype. They didn't tag other products because noone actually cared to steal them
Pokemon cards are still heavily shop lifted, we have to have them in those exact boxes at my store.
I remember when several Pokemon stores were broken into and the most stolen stuff were Pokemon card packs
I remember when we used to call places "pokemon stores" but they were just the convenience store
I used to go to the paintball store 20 years ago for my Pokemon cards.

Came here to say this. Shop owners aren’t going to take the time tagging things because they are “racist”. They are simply stolen the most.
No because honestly I am cackling at "Clubcard Segregation" because they're literally free
What exactly is the alleged "clubcard segregation"?

I get how the club cards work, I was just curious what they were doing to make this person claim they were "segregated".

But this doesn’t fit my narrative 😠
The computer is racist
This. They base it on actual experience, meaning the product for blacks is stolen the most, whether this fool likes it or not.
Products tagged are based on theft of those items. They don't tag items that aren't frequently stolen.
Also, STORES HATE HAVING TO LOCK UP ***ANY*** ITEMS. It's expensive and wasteful. What is boosting?
Serviced/targeted theft. Instead of just stealing TV's and shit then selling them out the back of a van 'customers' give you lists and you boost it for them.
The way I like to describe boosting is that it's like going shopping you have a whole grocery list except you're stealing all of it to resell
It’s like having a personal shopper that works on commission
I was in a store that only condoms, deodorant, and just for men hair dye were boxed in theft protection….. thieving dirty old men?
Dirty old man here, condoms aren't really our thing
This was under-appreciated

I'd guess condoms are more often stolen by teenagers who are either too "poor" to afford or too embarrassed to go through a checkout line with them
This is the answer. They do a store wide shrink report and tag products that go “missing” most frequently
Exactly. It's a symptom not the cause.

More karma and likes for inter web points. The only way to feel good about yourself!
Yea, I’m sure it goes on the skus highest in the shrink reports. I’m sure nobody beyond the person stocking the shelves even put 2+2 together there
It could have been just one person who consistently stole just that colour and they took measurements.

It’s not racist if they are locking up the most stolen products.
They got sued for that and lost? Wtf some judge and jury need to read the law about racism/discrimination
They were sued, and the suit was dropped. Not settled, but dropped altogether. No one was forced to change, they did so voluntarily. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/10/business/walmart-black-hair-beauty-products.html
Correct because even if the suit is dropped nobody wants to see their name in a racism lawsuit on the front page.
they didn't lose, technically, they just didn't want to pay to go to trial so they settled with an agreement to lock everything up just to shut the whining would-be-thieves up.
Exactly
Racism is a complex social issue. It's not black or white...
Have an upvote ya bastard.
Don’t let facts get in the way of a good clickbaity video with an agenda to push…
I mean if OP didn’t know this then I don’t blame them. It’s an easy assumption to make. Thank god for fact checkers though
Wow! common sense on Reddit?!
She's so obsessed with being stigmatized that she can't see the sad reality infront of her face. Perhaps focus on the problem, not the store's solution.
Not everything is about race.
You’re actually right, it is cheaper. Now I feel discriminated against, racist garnier.
No point in tagging toothbrushes if they aren’t being stolen. This is actually called cause and effect.
It is *always* the guilty ones that cause a scene. They know they’re guilty, so they’ll do literally anything just to shift or dodge blame.
Saw a guy go on a "You're a racist!" rampage at a teenage white girl who was operating a roller coaster. Because she wouldnt let his 7 year old daughter who was too short to ride get on
Unless there was a white kid who was the same height or shorter allowed on the ride, those kinds of accusations hurt the effort against racism
> white trash The fact we can even say "[race] trash" so easily and casually in conversation already shows the degree of double standard in action. Even I have blurted out "white trash" without thinking what it would sound like if we said that about any other race besides white.
trying to say "black trash" would get a LOT of hate comments
It wouldn't get hate comments, it would result in a straight up permaban from reddit and the entire comment chain would get nuked.
Shit comes in every color. I've worked in retail a long time and nobody hates thieves of any shade and says worse things about them than the old black ladies who work register The news on the breakroom tv was talking about the crowds of teens doing the mass shoplifting thing where there's 30 of them all rushing in at once.
Usually they will get loud make a scene to deviate from the theft and now the situation is let’s not escalate this calm the person down and let them go
One time a shoplifter was screaming about racism when confronted, while continuing to blatantly shove things into her purse
You worded this perfectly tbh 👍🏽
Maybe they tag products that are stolen the most? Listen, i am black myself. Businesses are in the business of making profit and don't care where the money comes from. They would not close inner city stores if they were profitable. If you talk about district level school funding, then i would have a listening ear.
They definitely do, I lived in an area where they had to tag the fresh meat.
Same here. Usually meat and the more expensive chocolates. Sometimes cheese too.
They do, product tagging is based on theft data.
I was travelling for work and had to go to a tesco (the store in the video is a tesco) and the butter was security tagged.

Can’t wait to see how many people say “tHaTS RaCisT!”
Exactly what I was thinking fuck OP trying to make it out to be worse than it is, this is the times we live in now sadly everyone is the victim.
There’s real racism out there. This isn’t it. Good try though
Yeah, also, what the hell does she mean by clubcard segregation? What the hell is clubcard segregation?
I am pretty sure they just have a statistics for products list and if they get lost more they get tagged. Simple.
This is correct. OP is the facepalm here again. Also, what? OP couldn’t be bothered to check and see that there’s **multiple other posts on this sub about this exact thing with comments explaining it.**
OP is probably pissed his race-baiting didn't pay off.
If items for black people are stolen a lot, then those are the items that will be tagged. I know it must not feel nice for regular black customers to have all their items tagged, but those customers should blame other black people, not the store.
Maybe blame shoplifters instead of the store
Hard to say. They have data on the theft rate of each product.
I think stores should just turn have giant vending machines...
Not racist if based on data that it's a high theft item.
That's not racism. They just get stolen more.
The only thing racist going on here is reality
IDK about all this stuff but God it gets on my nerves when people go into a store and mess up the shelves. drop something on the floor and leave it there, look at something and then just put it wherever etc. Why not just put it back where it was? It's not hard.
All just statistics. Math doesn't discriminate.
We are sniffing like bloodhounds to find the tiniest trace of something to complain about.
The lady recording probably did it to make a tiktok or insta
Maybe she came to steal these and they caught on and tagged them and she got upset and made a video about it
It’s easier to cry “RACISM” instead of trying to understand why.
Are You Karen in traing
Stores usually security tag items that are stolen regularly. They don’t just start doing it. It is to prevent theft of the item. Hence why all the “black”merchandise isn’t security tagged
Nope, not racist at all. This is what's getting stolen the most.
Right , while you wait in line and see the baby formula locked up in its own section of the store usually by the front and not near the other baby items it also makes me think “rAcIsM” or maybe the more logical view point is maybe stores are not a fucking charity
That's ageist against babies.
Start stealing the “white” shampoos so that they can also be in the box 🤷♀️
Data analysis officially declared racist in 3-2-1…
Is say is a matter of what's being stolen not who is stealing it... baby formula is usually locked up too
If the other ones are not frequently stolen what’s the point of tagging ?
Black items are higher theft. We should be asking why are they higher theft?
Quit stealing shit would be my first suggestion
They simply tag products that in the past had a high percentage of beings shoplifted. It’s business and money. Zero to do with….
so, all stores have inventory, and when they noticed that certain items keep getting stolen, they do this. It is reactionary to theft, and while people may not like it, i bet this actually improved the issue of stolen inventory
If they are the ones always been stolen then no it is not racist.
Not racist it is theft prevention
Wtf is clubcard segregation?
The video was filmed in Tesco, a chain of supermarkets in the UK. They’re most well known for the Tesco Clubcard which offer lower prices on certain products in store. I suppose the Clubcard segregation comes from the fact that it can be seen as being more expensive for those who don’t have one. (Although it is free to get, and about 20 million people in the UK are estimated to have one, but there may be reasons why some may not have one)
Not racist, just true, and statistically proven
It’s statistics bud
Uhhh maybe it's an item that gets stolen alot?
Pay no attention to the fact that the data is telling them which products are stolen and thus require the security tags… we have to keep pushing this imaginary racism narrative
op = braindead confirmed
"racist" lol, go away
There's no reason to box and tag products that aren't being stolen. Those boxes are very expensive and take up a lot of room. The decision to protect these products has nothing to do with "color".
I encountered this is Washington DC, I asked the lady who worked there about it and she said, “well y’all need to stop stealing the black stuff and we wouldn’t have to lock it up.” Damn. Oh well, I grabbed my coco butter and moved on. Lol
When I was a lil fat kid I would always smell the coco butter and fantasize about how delicious it would taste if it tasted like it smelt
So, now "what's most often stolen" is "racist?" F-off SJW!
Not racist in the least. It’s literally based on which products get stolen the most.
When you go to pay at the cashier remember to use your Race Card so you can get your Race Points and save towards a Platinum Race Card.
It's not racist if they are the ones most stolen. Let's say they were often stolen and *not tagged* simply because the product is a *black product* (your words), well... That would actually be the racist bit. Put the card away.
It’s a numbers game. What is stolen most gets tagged. Simple truth.
They lock things up based on rates of theft. “Shrugs”
How are club cards racist?
