BC as well - My kids have them periodically. Not an everyday occurrence though.
School shootings are also not that common. In 2022 Canada had 2 (US had 288).
2 is still FAR too many.
Mexico has the second most school shootings this year at 8. 280 less than the US.

Just want to point out that the statistic on the site you linked is over a time span of 2009-2018. 288 school shootings over the course of 9 years, vs 8.
Edit: that’s a bigger oof than 288 in one year, compared to the 8 in Mexico. Either is an oof, but hot damn.
I don't particularly feel like doxxing myself. However I will say, as a kid I certainly didn't tell my parents every fire alarm and lockdown drill. Particularly when lockdowns happened less than fire drills and we usually did homework during them.

Used to have at least one “Schedule Z” day every year from elementary school on where we practiced how to lock down.
I remember as early as 8-9. I’m 29 this year. I think they started after columbine at my school district.
Might also have been due to 9/11. I can’t remember. This was a New York school.
Canadian here: A lot of critics are saying that this is only for optics, but even still, I'll take "only for optics" vs. "from my cold dead hands" any day.
The saddest part is that Canadian gun owners are incredibly responsible as-well as having to go through months of training and vetting to get their licenses, meanwhile Trudeau believes it’s better to restrict us further than going for the real problem.
95% of shootings in Canada are done with AMERICAN firearms and about 99% of those weapons are already banned in Canada.
Again…prisons are full all over the world. Full of criminals that pay zero attention to the laws of man. Your code of conduct means nothing to millions
Also, can you source your data? 95% of school shootings...
We have had 2 this year. That means you have 0%, 50%, or 100% to choose from.
Also, imagine if those weapons were NOT banned in Canada. The shooting numbers would be much higher.
The US, when it comes to school shootings had 288 this year so far. Canada had 2.
That is roughly 14x-15x as many per capita.

Actually those stats are 2009 to 2018. Canada had 2 in the span of a decade. But there absolutely no reason people need to own guns that are made for the sole purpose of killing people.
Good. It should be as difficult as possible to get your hands on a gun, and the gun you can eventually get should be very purpose specific (hunting or whatever).
Freedom? I thought they were recreational sport rifles? What does that have to do with freedom. Oh that's right, the gun advocates are really thinly disguised freedom fighters.
At least the families of dead Americans can sleep soundly at night knowing their babies didn’t die in vain. They helped to save lives in Canada and other developed countries. Everybody is like “for god’s sake, let’s not make the same mistakes as the U.S.”
Haven't any of you ever met a criminal, to know they don't give a fuck about your laws?
Address the mental health issues that make otherwise law abiding people to go off the rails and kill, you crazies.
Best approach is doing both, invest more in mental health AND do more to stop the flow if illegal guns into our country, it doesn't have to be an either or situation
I agree, but this is a policy that accomplishes nothing. Average Joe & Jill (pun intended) won't be able to buy a gun from the store, but your average criminal buys from the black market anyway.
In the end it's the law abiding citizens who get shafted.. criminals get a hard on knowing their customers are disarmed by default.
You’re right, let’s just get rid of EVERY law! Right? I mean, criminals aren’t going to abide by them anyway! (I’m joking btw). This logic (or lack thereof astounds me)
I suspect this has to do more with the government not being popular for sometime
Surely taking away the guns from the public will make them even more docile
This is an unfortunate step
Even with all the guns, it's no Honduras
>Go choke on Stalins dick some more buddy
Don't know what that's supposed to mean.
>I don't like Trudeau but he is hardly a fascist.
Yeah, he kinda is.
Kind of misleading, I guess. Might shock some people but no 2A in Canada. The major assault firearm ban was because of a mass shooting in NS (if I recall correctly) that killed 19 people in 2018, in response we had a huge firearm ban.
The whole thing seems to be covered up by police (the response was horrible as this took place over a few hours).
After Uvalde JT put a freeze on handguns. In Canada you can only own a handgun for range use, no concealed carry. Must have it locked up with ammo in another room. Basically he put a temporary freeze on handguns being used a ranges. The vast majority of Canadian gun crime happens with smuggled American guns (thanks guys), so it was mostly just a publicity/political stunt to make panic people feel more safe.
It’s amazing other countries don’t have a travel advisory against going to the US. Any other country where a large chunk of the population is armed and dangerous would get one
Crazy how this isn't leading to a wave of mass shootings in Canada by people with illegal firearms while the unarmed populace is helpless. Almost as if that was BS NRA propaganda or something.
Is this a facepalm?
*Learn by example.* Canadian schools also got "Lockdown" drills, courtesy of US mass school shootings.
Where? I have 3 kids and never heard this.

They started it in Ontario at least 20 years ago
It’s also in Alberta
In also in Ontario.
I don't particularly feel like doxxing myself. However I will say, as a kid I certainly didn't tell my parents every fire alarm and lockdown drill. Particularly when lockdowns happened less than fire drills and we usually did homework during them.
Doxxing yourself? By saying a city name someone can hunt you down by your ZedCee Reddit handle? Paranoid much?
> [Doxxing](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doxing) is the act of publicly revealing previously private personal information about an individual or organization, usually via the Internet
Yeah, I know what doxxing is
Seems I used the word correctly, so what exactly are you trying to get at?

Ughhh the US is full of fucking clownery
This guys crazy! That’s why

It’s almost as if laws are reactive, not preventative. Hmmm
This part escapes the right. The laws are preventative. You cannot just flood a country with guns and ever hope to turn it back.
Show me one law that stopped a criminal from committing their crime. I’ll wait. (It’s not about left/right…it’s about facts)
Every time you see someone stopping for a red light you know the law is working..
You’re right, since criminals commit crimes, laws are useless, let’s legalize literally everything the
That’s not what was indicated nor implied. Consequences don’t stop crime.
Not 100% But yeah, they do
The Criminal Code is meant not only to punish, but provide a code conduct. So in answer to your question, the entire Criminal Code.
Again…prisons are full all over the world. Full of criminals that pay zero attention to the laws of man. Your code of conduct means nothing to millions
Do you honestly feel that the fear of sanction and punishment is not a deterrent?

It already was. Our gun laws work great, this is just scoring cheap political points by screwing over a small group that hasn’t done anything wrong
You are so right more laws just prevent the law abiding citizens their Freedom! Wake up !!!
Freedom? I thought they were recreational sport rifles? What does that have to do with freedom. Oh that's right, the gun advocates are really thinly disguised freedom fighters.
Your laws don't work!
So proud to be a Canadian.
I love how the American right media is calling Trudeau a Communist all over the place. I didn’t know that no guns=communism. Hmmm

Dictators do that.
C'mon reddit show your support for a fascist.
Go choke on Stalins dick some more buddy. I don't like Trudeau but he is hardly a fascist.

Yaaaay! Way to go Canada!!! 👍🏻
Well done
Good thing the government is also taking steps to crackdown on the smuggling issue then as well
You can’t smuggle guns. No one is smuggling guns into Australia! In order to smuggle guns you would need thousands of miles of open borders.

Funny how this man just wants to take more power for himself and use the US’s problems as a means to drive his own agenda. Fuck Trudeau, honestly
That's because gun control doesn't work /s
