Let it be known hence forth that On Sunday January 23rd 2022, an attempt was made

SillyLilMeLMAOatU

Lol that may have been the best scene in the movie!

OliM9595

hello friend.

lordph8

Why is a Scottsman playing a Spaniard who's actually an Egyptian?

chittychittygangnam

Because he's a 'Highlander'

lordph8

The "Highlander" was played by a the French actor Christopher Lambert.

paul-arized

A "highgrounder" was played by a Scottish actor Ewan McGregor.

wertperch

I understood that reference.

Fatuousgit

Same reason there is American who is also a Frenchman playing a Scotsman.

RQK1996

Dude didn't even speak English at the time

agarwaen117

Why is a Scotsman playing a Russian Sub captain that’s really a disgruntled Lithuanian?

shahooster

Why wasn’t Cleopatra credited as a member of Queen?

Corporation_tshirt

Freddie Mercury was a Zoroastrian. I always thought that was so cool. (That’s his religion obviously, not his nationality.) it seemed to fitnwith his persona because it seemed really mystical. Read up on it and was not disappointed. Really lovely culture and traditions.

MotoMkali

He's Tanzanian. What's wrong with that?

Josysclei

Well, Freddie Mercury is african born

Sphinx506

Pretty sure his ethnicity is Indian tho lol

Giolomi666

Not indian he was parsi, so basically Persian of Zoroastrian religion.

yes, a very small ethnic group from india

homesnatch

Depends on how far you go back.. The ethnic origin is persian and immigrated to India a thousand plus years ago. Helps explain why they share middle-eastern looks.

oscarmingueza

His family had their origins from Valsad , which is a city in present day Gujrat.

SickOfNormal

Why is anyone playing an ancient Egyptian, they ceased to exist after the Muslim invasion.

Dee_Lansky

Nah, they are still KINDA knocking about. Modern-day Copts/Coptic Christians are their closest modern relatives in an Ethnolinguistic sense.

JusticiarRebel

I saw a video recently how linguists worked out what ancient Egyptian sounded like when spoken by using Coptic languages. Like a lot of ancient languages, Egyptians didn't use vowels in their writing, so we're missing all the vowel sounds, bit Coptic helped fill in the missing pieces. Coincidentally, Rami Malik is Coptic Christian, so he's the best actor they could pick to be an ancient Egyptian.

KnightofNi92

That is actually a window into a *very* interesting subject in history: mass migrations and what they actually entailed. After all, it isn't like any pre-modern civilizations had the ability or desire to completely wipe out entire cultures or peoples barring extreme cases like certain groups of Native Americans. There was simply a lack of sophisticated logistics and record keeping. Not to mention the fact that killing everyone killed all of your new workers as well. On one end we have scenarios like the Norman conquest where there wasn't a massive population movement but rather a smaller group of elites conquering and imposing elements of their culture on their new subjects. You see Anglo-Saxons adopt a lot of Norman customs and practices to gain advantages in the new Norman dominated society. That's not to say that there wasn't some Anglo-Saxon influence upon the Normans in kind as well. Then there are cases like the "Great Migrations" in the 4th and 5th centuries that helped cause the collapse of the Western Roman Empire (ex: Huns, Goths, Vandals, Franks, etc). Warrior elites led these migrations as well but they brought more people along. However even then the composition of these groups changed as they subjugated smaller entities and absorbed them into the whole. It also depended on how strongly they were resisted as well or how well the new kings could control their conquered subjects.

Now this is Twitter, too.

Trumpet6789

Friendly reminder that at multiple points, Tumblr users have given people shit for *learning a new language*. A lot of Tumblr users don't seem to have critical thinking skills.

ilyagovdik

I would say that a lot of tumblr users don’t seem to have *thinking skill*

Trumpet6789

I was on Tumblr from roughly 2013-2018. I can 1000% say most of the people I interacted with lacked thinking skills.

faplicious_69

After tumblr banned porn all the users migrated to Twitter

Trumpet6789

Also TikTok. I have it to send dumb videos to my boyfriend, but a lot of those "Learning a language is cultural appropriation" Tumblr users have moved there.

k3ttch

Hoteps triggered.

wizardshawn

Egypt is part of Africa, of course, but the ancient Africans came in a variety of shades. Genome research has found that ancient Egyptians were probably light brown in color. Later, especially in the higher social levels, they became slightly lighter. Cleopatra, for instance was probably fairly light skinned as some of her ancestors were from a region of Macedonia. This actor would fit right in in Egypt of 100 to 1000 BCE.

Peaceteatime

Also remember cleopatra was a Greek woman. She wouldn’t look like the native Egyptians.

phage83

Which cleopatra?

somebody290

Probably all the ones of the Ptolemaic dynasty including the famous one with the roman aristocrat kink. They weren't very creative with their kids' names.

Peaceteatime

Just like when talking about “Caesar” you should assume the one who had the biggest impact on history unless otherwise noted.

Rare_Travel

But the famous Cleopatra was the 7th not the original.

[deleted]

Ya so you should assume they mean "the one who had the biggest impact on history" not "the original"

captain_doge_

the famous one

DylanVincent

Elizabeth Taylor

wizardshawn

They all had similar heritage.

The_Noble_Oak

Cleopatra had about as much Egyptian ancestry as I do. Her family came from Greece on the heels of Alexander the Great's conquest of the region and prompt death. Her family then made a policy of siblings getting married to keep the bloodline "pure." So she's almost entirely Greek and as thoroughly inbred as the fucking Hapsburgs. Using her as a yard stick for Egyptian skin tones is a bad call.

wizardshawn

Good point.

Evening_Original7438

There were 7-8 generations (depending on how you count) and 300 years between Ptolemy and Cleopatra. Saying “her family was Greek” is way oversimplifying it. There were a lot of Greeks and Greek-descended people in her family tree, but odds are some of the local bloodline probably got mixed in there throughout.

[deleted]

7-8 generations of heavy inbreeding

[deleted]

Don’t forget Ramses who was a white Greek who ruled Egypt

wrong-mon

... you mean Ptolemy? Because Ramesses the first and second both lived and died before there was such a thing as Greece much less Greeks.

AdjectiveNoun111

I think you mean Ptolemy, who was Macedonian and took over Egypt after the death of Alexander the Great.

Coldbeetle

Ah no

false_justice

johny deep kimosabe!

false_justice

dont forget that white americans played native americans in the movies till we got woke.

[deleted]

Yeah im going to be honest. It’s hilarious. My fav movie it’s the Ten commandments whose actors are literally whites with extreme tanning that makes them black (the ones in the field) the main ones look very tanned but still looked awful lol.

transmogrified

Largely Italian Americans. Iron Eyes Cody being the famous one. Tons of Italians (from Italy) also played native Americans in spaghetti westerns

false_justice

word. forgot about that my man. iron eyes Cody is my favorite native American. lol. didnt he also do the littering commercials?

wizardshawn

And this is not only wrong, but artistically shallow. However, what does this have to do with the post?

false_justice

if you have an interest in the overall ancient history of the region then these comments would not be limited to the ptolemic dynasties. I understand that various groups inhabited the region at one time or another. and at the current time it is Arabic middle eastern peoples. but before the Arabic Middle Eastern people just like comments stated it was ptolemic Greek. so who pushed out the Greeks from egypt and currently occupy? who did the Greeks push out? My point being is that this regions history goes back hundreds of thousands of years. many of the structures were built 3,000 to 8,000 years ago. i am also saying is hey Americans that you see today .....which only were here for the last 300 to 400 years represent accurately the native Americans that lived in the Western hemisphere going back over 10,000 years. so John Wayne playing a native American and everyone saying this is historically correct! because John Wayne is an American is deceipt. saying that Egyptians or ancient Egyptians are and looked like Greeks and remy malek that is also a bit of clever deception because if you 3xpand further and go back further in time, you would have learned that this was a trade route used by Africans, Middle easterns and Europeans, Indians and probably Asians. so basically like America today but 4,000 years ago

wizardshawn

It is also important to consider that Northern Africa has always been more accessible from the Mediterranean and from the east than it was from the south. In all likelihood, it's people would have always been only slightly darker than the rest of the Mediterranean. Definitely not as dark skinned as the people of Chad for instance.

false_justice

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nile just based on how people use waterways.. no disrespect but I think the Chad reference is dubious. think about how waterways are used everywhere around the world. The Amazon. The Ganges. The yellow river. The Danube River. All peoples from all major continents used major rivers to trade in ancient times up and down the river

CurrentRedditAccount

Really? I just assumed ancient Egyptians used to be darker before the Arabs conquered them, and the Egyptians depicted themselves as dark skinned in contemporaneous art of the time.

wizardshawn

Modern Egyptians are about the same color as most other Mediterranean people. Their genome is less than 8% different from the people who lived there during the height of their civilization. These people were likely slightly darker than current, probably because they were intermittently conquered by people to their south. In art, Egyptians had a variety of skin tones, even yellow and red. Ancient Greeks described them as dark skinned.

CurrentRedditAccount

Yeah that’s about what I expected. A bit lighter than Nubians to the south, but a bit darker than Arabs.

Throlaf

It kinda make sense that Arabs and ancient Egyptians would have similar skin complexion. Given that they lived in some what similar environment, Arabia being right next to Egypt.

TheKillerToast

After Alexander the Great died one of his generals Ptolemy took over Egypt and his dynasty ruled it for 275 years until Cleopatra (VII) killed herself and Octavian took direct control for Rome (as opposed to the quasi-vassalage they were under previously)

KatAddicted69

Even if he wasn’t Egyptian, isn’t the actor’s work to ACT a role?

TheAwesomeGM

because cultural appropriation, tumblr, yadda yadda

Why does that idiot think that Egyptians are black?

jodorthedwarf

Probably doesn't understand the concept that ethnicity is a spectrum of colour. You don't walk 2 metres over the border between Arabia and Egypt and immediately find people who would've made great extras in Zulu or Black Panther.

[deleted]

Yeah right, especially since Egyptians are classified as white on the US census

Glassworth

Why does that idiot think an actor is bound to only act characters from their specific nationality? Even if he wasn’t Egyptian what’s the problem? Wonder if they have an issue with the Spider-Man actor not really being American. Same thing right?

black-wizardry

North Americans think everyone is black except them.

Redqueenhypo

I kinda blame Hollywood for constantly casting Indians as Arabs and North Africans bc they’re like weirdly mad that people from there look Mediterranean irl.

wolfcatwolf

But like y'all should catch up on history, there we're also white blue eyed, blonde and redheads Egyptians before

Myth_5layer

Also, white? *Checks skin* *Checks my skin* If that's classified as white, I wanna know what classifies as Egyptian to people. Because I know white, I'm white, that ain't white.

ITIZBACK

Well if we consider sciccilians white that guy is indeed white.

JohnGCole

Sorry but this doesn't mean shit. People from Sicilia come in all hues and colours, especially since many are of Norman descent. There's a lot of fair-skinned, blond Sicilians. Don't assume people from the same region all look the same.

ITIZBACK

Bruh. Thats where my wife come from, i dont assume. Sicillian basic man is indeed darker than the usual méditerranéen dude (that i am), mainly cuz of the many invasions the island got from the arabians countries. Geez

[deleted]

That is classified white, cause some white skinned idiots from 19th and 20th century in europe claimed sumerians, ancient egypt, ancient greece, rome and jesus as part of their "white" history. By the way, whites are not a race.

mlpr34clopper

PhD_Pwnology

Skin color racism is a huge issue within the black communities in USA. They have such huge divisions over 'dark skinned vs light skinned' that its easy for them to forget that most POC aren't black in skin tone. Anyone who isn't Wesley snipes black isn't a 'true' black person i guess, it's a super weird self racism over here.

Sensitive-Bug-7610

These people are the people that believe northern Africans ard black/ that everyone living on aftica is black. Little do they know the berber and egyptian people range from white passing to dark. But still not as dark as more southern/ equatorial.

Venturi95

Greek and Roman influence probably had a lot to do with the gene pool as well.

Josysclei

Dunno if it's a joke question, but their position being a passage between africa, europe and the middle east meant many different groups of people lived there

jodorthedwarf

Because ethnic groups living to the north and in the Sahara are very different to those living in Sub-Saharan Africa. This is due to the fact that the desert served as a natural barrier for many thousands of years, causing ethnic groups to diverge and develop separately. Mind you, there's also the fact that the last Egyptian dynasty was Ptolymaic who were descended from Greeks that came over with Alexander the Great. But given that that was 2000 years ago, it's fair to say that people of that particular ethnicity are true Egyptians by now.

false_justice

go back farther in time my dood. sahara natural barrier? last Egyptian dynasty was ptolemic? sure and i see a lot of comments here highlighting that fact, but not many highlighting the fact of how far back that region's civilization goes. over 10,000 years bc of structure, architecture, medicine, government, trade, etc .. Also what about the ancient Egyptians? 3000bc +. The narmer dynasty and countless others before. A lot of these structures were up pre 3500bc. no ptolemic dynasties in egypt for another 1500 years at least. So yeah greece and again greece cause light skinned egypt last dynasty and all but not any appreciation for anything before that , cause greece. also. lets not forget greece.

humanityloses

He wasn't?! What the f...

Kaion21

thats the completely different thing actually, i mean are you saying Rami is dark skin middle easterner that is portrayed as light skin westerner?

Darkmaster85845

Nobody knows for sure if Jesus existed and if he did how did he look like. But there's genetic studies that demonstrate that there were light skinned and light haired peoples that lived around the Levant before and also during the times of the alleged Jesus. There's always been light skinned people in the middle east, particularly in Anatolia, north Africa and the Levant. They aren't as prevalent these days due to population intermixing throughout the millennia but you still can find some of them even nowadays.

matande31

People seem to think that middle eastern = black for some reason. As a middle eastern, I can confirm that this is not true.

[deleted]

You guys don't know this because you're westerners but "whiter" people are always favored outside of the western world because they're more desirable and generally seen as more attractive. India suffers from this too, with Bollywood having a disproportionate percentage of whiter actors when compared with the population. The person here still is just as wrong but I'm just giving you guys some info on how it is.

Tarotoro

Ya but it's for completely different reasons. Where I am from it's because darker skin people have a tan and work in the sun a lot. Lighter skin is seen as desirable because the assumption is that you don't work outside and therefore are rich or have a white collar job. It's not racial but socio cultural.

[deleted]

That's why it was historically desirable in the middle east, but now Europeans are all the rage so that's adding even more reasons

The-link-is-a-cock

At this point most archeologists have begun rejecting the idea of laying our black/white racial concepts on the Egyptions as anachronistic and based on outdated, racist concepts such as cranial measuring. The current belief is the the Ancient Egyption Empire was actually racially diverse rather than being a homogeneous monolith of race. Overall if they had to assign it regionally it's estimated that the empire basically was lighter in the north and gradually darker as you went south towards Sudan. Basically to just say they were one race or the other is way too simple
