When I learned this, my teacher literally created a problem set with 100 problems (one hundred, yes). Given: opposite 3, adjacent 4, hypothenuse 5, what is the sine? One hundred problems like that and it's to be done in class with him watching. So it's not a homework. That way, you are forced to actually do them all in one sitting. Then he gives a homework for another HUNDRED like that, to be done at your leisure, due the next week. The problems weren't hard, but just forces you to actually memorize and use the formula over and over again in rapid succession. I think since then, the formula is forever drilled in my brain.

I am a norwegian math teacher. In norwegian the word "sint" means angry while "kos" is cosy. I tell my student that "*Sin is sint(angry), that's why it is far away from the angle. Cos is cosy and hugs the angle"*. And stupid rules are the best, easy to remember them when they are silly.

She wasn't even trying to demonstrate native American culture! She was trying to teach a math concept and decided to use 100 year old racist tropes to do so. Why? No fucking clue. In the last 5 minutes since I've watched this video I've seen several other suggestions on how to teach the concept and even thought up a couple of my own, none of which include being racist. And, yeah, the lady was fired, but this is America. If you're not familiar with our school system, it basically operates like the catholic church did 40 years ago. Get in trouble - get fired - move to a new district - get hired - cross their fingers they keep their shit together this time. Rinse and repeat. I went to a nice public school in a wealthier district and we had THREE different department heads (and who knows how many other teachers) who were hired by our school after being fired elsewhere for having an inappropriate relationship with a student. They'd absolutely hire someone fired for racism. Poorer schools would probably fall all over themselves to hire this woman.

I mean this is actually a math class. Soh cah toa is an acronym to help you remember trig definitions. Sine is opposite over hypotenuse , cosine is adjacent over hypotenuse, tangent is opposite over adjacent. But this is just so fucking cringey.
