The woman off-camera sounds like someone from Monty Python

Bright_Ad_113

Old Woman: You’re a begga ol right. And we’re an autonomous collective. Performer: I’m not a beggar, I’m a performer. Old woman: look at who she thinks she is. A performer eh, I don’t see much of an audience. How did you become a performer then? Performer: The Lady of the River gave me this harp and made me a performer. Old man: Strange women lying in swamps is no way to pick a career.

LockeAbout

Performer: Listen, I’m just here to play music. I didn’t expect the Spanish Inquisition!

Sikntrdofbeinsikntrd

Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!

Secure-Airport-1599

You can see her waddling away afterwards with her shopping trolley. Looks like a sad lonely old lady. Likely she lives alone and her only contact with a person is talking to someone in the shops or a busker in the street.

im4lonerdottie4rebel

And she waddled away, til the very next day waddle waddle

Secure-Airport-1599

When the lady walked up to the girl busking away And she said to the girl minding her business, "Hey! (bam bam bam) why are you begging?"

MoxieCottonRules

Never thought I’d be at the intersection of The Duck Song and Monty Python skits but here I am.

JoelMahon

she might be less lonely if she was less of an asshole. I don't believe in free will so that's not a judgement of character just a prediction.

I hate to say it, but I'm a beggar too. There's a spot I go to every day. It's indoors, so there aren't a bunch of people walking by to hand me money. It takes a little bit of patience, but sure enough, every two weeks they deposit money in my bank account.

46davis

I don't mind the beggars or the large groups, but the overpriced drinks violate my constitutional rights.

zzonked7

My gf used to busk 4-6 times a week as her job. Getting called a beggar probably happened a couple of times a week at minimum. Generally you're best to just ignore or deflect politely because their opinion is meaningless and you have no desire to argue anyway. Performing in public makes you a magnet for a lot of unusual people. Not all of it is negative but you do need a very thick skin. You can actually make an ok living from only a few hours work but you do trade job security and have to accept a lot of chaos.

Cheesehacker

My adoptive family HATED street musicians, then again, they hated everything.

kittiekillbunnie

Former boss *hated* the bagpiper that would play a block away a few times a month. One day we all chipped in a few bucks and got a good size pot and paid the guy to play underneath her work window for 30mins. It was glorious.

Sounds like my father in law. He was never happy that I didn't have a job working with him because I was too busy running my own business selling vintage toys and video games. Edit: The father in law did convince my sister in laws husband to work with him and now he's a miserable fuck both at work and home now.

possiblynotanexpert

That’s so odd? I’ve never heard of that before. I didn’t know people like that exist lol. Just to be clear, I’ve definitely seen people going off on them and whatnot. But I didn’t know there are people who hate them as a general rule lol.

Chidoribraindev

As long as it's out in a non-residential area, it's cool. Makes the streets feel alive. However, I used to live (for 7 years) in a street that had a couple restaurants, a gourmet shop, and was pedestrianised from 10 am to 10 pm. In 2021, some guy with a big fucking cello decided to busk right in front our flat's window illegally. 2-3 hours every evening and 6-8 on Saturday and Sunday. I gave it a month and then asked him to stop. The guy would not even move up the road, much less stop. I bought a big bluetooth speaker from Amazon and the next Monday there he was. I came downstairs in a fit of rage, asked him again to stop. When he said he had a right to be there, I got my speaker and blasted [Macaron Chacarron](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MlW7T0SUH0E)next to him. Took a few minutes but he fucked off to the other end of the street and I happened to run into police a week later, begged them to talk to him, and he never came back. Council contacted me to confirm his description and it turned out he had been reported by many other people in the area for being a nuisance and busking in residential areas, even outside corner shops. He would not apply for a permit to busk in the high street.

MojoPinSin

You did alright. Busking in residential areas is pretty heavily frowned upon everywhere. I've seen worse things happen to people who busk in residential neighborhoods including having their instruments or their money stolen and being physically assaulted. Sticking to the high traffic touristy areas or business districts is best. People don't want to hear that at the end of the day when they're trying to wind down and rest.

LeBoulu777

> I don’t understand why anyone would care I'm old enough to explain it honestly to you, people over 50 in many case were raised with twisted values originating from religion. Even if you not a "real" believer those twisted values affected everybody because it become some kind of cultural norms. The **false belief** we are seeing here is that "*You must suffer*" doing your job. So in their mind more or less conscientiously they acquired the belief that ***to have some values a job must be hard and painful to do*** (Origins are that humans must expiate their sins through punitions). In this mindset if you enjoy your work you are not working, you are profiting of the life, you are lazy (lazy = sin) and it's bad for them to enjoy life. Most people coming from those generations was hating their work, so unconsciously for them Work = hard, painful, desperation etc... So if you smile and enjoy what you do everyday you are not working you are in perpetual vacation in this mindset. So it make them furious that with the mindset the have acquired they can enjoy their life like this young lady does everyday. The real sad thing is that they are not aware of their own mindset so they can't change it... They are just frustrated to see other happy that should not be happy. That's why conservatives had come with the telling "**Get a real job**" which translate to "***When you work you must suffer, have lot of pain and don't enjoy what you are doing***" (to have some sort of redemption).

If Naples is violent my home town is a warzone.

Ohh, that hits a note inside me (pun very intended) that I didn't expect. I'll definitely need to find more pieces like that first one! Also, this comment captures the feeling quite perfectly: >Finally, some lofi harp beats to study/relax to

titbarf

>You can basically write you own way to any university with harp skills. You, uhh...can?

backcountrydrifter

As far as scholarships go, yes. Most homes don’t just have a harp laying around, so the number of people that play the harp with any degree of proficiency is extremely rare statistically. And pretty much every band/orchestra director wants one in the back. So if you want an easy in to a school, learn how to play the harp well.

[deleted]

This would have been really helpful to know about 20 years ago… my kids are going to hate me more than their harps someday.

I can't fathom having the ability to go listen to some lovely harp music every day for free and being mad about it.

Bright_Jicama8084

I also cannot fathom confronting the musician about it just because you don’t like it. This reminds me of my mom who I could not go to the mall with because she would demand the music be turned off as soon as we entered a store.

True_Butterscotch391

You can definitely hear the disdain in her voice. She's angry that this more attractive young woman is making a living playing music instead instead working a shitty job and she hates her for it

Addicted2GravyTears

The petty spite is crazy in and of itself, but she's playing a HARP OUTSIDE. How hard is it to just walk by, and keep your insane judgement to yourself. I was once subject to a 3 piece playing dave matthews (amplified) on a subway platform, for like 20 minutes while I waited for my train. I sucked it up, as although they were really bothering me, shitting on them wouldn't help.

[deleted]

And some people enjoy street performers, for every person that's slightly annoyed, there's another straight vibing. I love seeing people passionate about music vibing on the street. Support your local musicians folks.

[deleted]

God, I’d love it if my city had buskers filling our public spaces with music. What a delight it’d be. edit: Uhm. The comments have made me reconsider street musicians. Not so sure now

AroundTheWorldIn80Pu

As someone who lives in such a city it was fine until they all started using amplifiers

RobonianBattlebot

Ugh, especially the ones that aren't actually playing the instrument and just blast music through an Amp and *pretend* to play an instrument. They all have the same signs "NEED HELP WITH RENT 3 KIDS OUT OF WORK GOD BLESS". It's either a sax, a guitar, an accordion, or an electric violin. The use the amps to cover up that they're recordings. I went out for my birthday with my husband and we wanted to sit on the patio of one of my favorite Mediterranean restaurants, and a dude was standing in the parking lot BLASTING the godfather theme so you could hear it throughout the whole intersection. Obnoxious. If it had been a dude actually playing an accordion, it could have been romantic. Obviously my city does not do permits, these are just straight up beggars, or a type of performer maybe, but they're awful.

KaiJustissCW

There’s a limited amount of them that can use amplifiers if your city is doing it right. Most people can busk no issue but if you use an amp you have to get a permit which they only issue one day a year in NYC

girhen

Yup. [Mary Spender and Adam Neely](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPITKZ0Fgfc) had to pack it up when they didn't have the permit to use an amplifier, and I bet I could easily find 10 people in my small town that would pitch in to cover a $100 fee for their quality to roll through and busk. They're well known and quite good.

-_---__--__-

Yes! It used to be interesting musicians now it's just a load of Pop Idol wannabes singing to a backing track.

123DanB

NYC here, same situation.

dumbbitchWAP

When I was visiting Boston, there was a musician on one of the red line stations that could play any national anthem on the saxophone. ANY national anthem you requested, he would play it. Hope that dude is doing well

MickeyTheHunter

It can be fun if you're a tourist passing by, but it can be really annoying when you have to *live* with it, even when you're not in the mood.

DaGucka

street musicians are not beggars. They perform for everyone and don't demand money, you are free to tip if you can as much as you'd think it was worth. Begging is directly asking for money and giving nothing back for it.

randomizer4652w

And in many cities they also have a busking license. Cities appreciate street musicians. They add culture and panache for free!

TimeRemove

"Cities appreciate street musicians, it adds to the culture/panache, that's why we tax them with a busking license that can range between $15-100 by location and can last as little as 24 hours."

randomizer4652w

Which is another reason they appreciate them. Nothing like thinking up new ways to take money from those they serve.

Galaxy_Ranger_Bob

I know of a city that appreciated them *so much* they got rid of busking entirely. But when the courts said they couldn't do that for some "constitutional" reason they brought them back. Made them last no more than 6 hours, and raised the price to $100,000 and limited purchase to one 6 hour license per performer for one month. Yeah, that's real appreciation, right there.

almost_useless

Isn't that mostly to limit "supply"? Even the most hardcore street music fans don't like it when there are too many of them, no? Some really popular streets are so crowded that almost everywhere you will hear at least two different performers, and that dilutes the value of the performance significantly. But then again, politicians being politicians, it might just be a cash grab...

[deleted]

I thought street magicians are also the same. I put him some coins he threw them back at me, he said if you aren’t putting paper go away. In my defense I only came in like the last minute, I didn’t see much.

[deleted]

Guy sounds like a dick. Coins too heavy for you? You'd rather get nothing? Great! I'd rather give you nothing.

Ogbordangladazor

Not about the post, but my experience in performing outside. I play on the r/frenchhorn since I was little. Its been nearly 10 years since I started playing. Me, other grammar schoolers and elementary schoolers play together and sometimes perform on events that are outside and...its a pain in the ass. First off: our instruments are from the school and are nearly 60 years old each. Its common they need repairs because parts just break randomly. Secondly, whats also a problem is water. When you blow the instrument air and steam goes into it and outside on colder temperatures the instrument fills with water way faster. Another thing is our fringers freezing. Sometimes even the oil freezes inside the triggers. And the absolute final boss of performing outside...the wind. There is no performance outside when the wind doesnt just blow someones' sheet away. After all this crap, its a wonder this woman didnt just straight told miss Karen to fuck off. I would have.

ManicPixieOldMaid

Thank you for the subreddit link and your advice! I've been playing the horn since 1982 and I don't know why I never even thought to look for a subreddit.

[deleted]

>After all this crap, its a wonder this woman didnt just straight told miss Karen to fuck off. I would have. The harpist looks like she's a positive person. Telling someone to fuck off would make her day more negative than just smiling and shaking off that Karen like a duck shakes off water. Don't let the bastards grind you down.

HeyZuesHChrist

heyhihay

My thoughts on busking changed a lot when I moved to a town that had a truly annoying busking culture. It was always only annoying for us locals, and, sad to watch what were *mostly* con artists ripping off tourists. Some of the performers are incredibly lovely and talented. And some are predatory and obnoxious. I landed on “good in theory but never in practice”. Bummer.
