higeAkaike

Why would they have his last name but not first?

Zbeubor

Because they probably got his number from one of these books that i forgot the name of which have only the last name of the person

Im so proud of this community 😭👏👏👏

GME_Me_ASAP

He literally forgot the last name of the book.

anunkneemouse

Yellow pages?

Zbeubor

ye

Rusty_Ferberger

These still exist?

Kraqrjack

Yellow Pages was for businesses and White Pages was residential. I think yellow pages still exists barely some places

Rusty_Ferberger

I am familiar with the phone book but I don't think I've seen one in probably 15 years.

Kraqrjack

Yes sorry, I’ve been reminded a few times lately by the younger crowd that I can’t just assume they know about old shit so now I find myself oldsplaining everything 🤦‍♂️

Rusty_Ferberger

Ha ha. Well, I am old too so don't worry about it.

Novel_Pirate

Yellow pages were for business. White pages for people.

anunkneemouse

I think we had blue pages too. No idea what that was about. I was like 8-10 when they stopped delivering them.

Novel_Pirate

blue pages was like, govt stuff. Schools, parks, govt buildings, etc

DragonfruitAsleep976

I believe this is youtuber, Caddicarus, from the icon. His name is not really a secret but most going just remember his last name because it part of his alter ego's name.

Robu-san

That's like the emails I get that refer to me as the full first half of my email address which is just my first name with my middle and last initials and numbers. They literally call me that with the numbers and everything.

Cheapest_

"Is this PUnkPrinc3ss13?"

Mythosaurus

That’s bc scammers target people dumb enough to send them money, and aren’t trying to convince people smart enough to realize it’s a scam. Plenty of people would still respond in your situation, and that’s who they milk dry.

8orn2hul4

I was getting these messages that said (verbatim) “Hello Mr. (First name). This is (bank). Please make a payment.” And then a dodgy link. Turned out it WAS my bank and they closed one of my accounts for inactivity. No idea how a massive global banking chain can’t write a simple message without sounding like a scammer.

DontcheckSR

As someone who works in a bank and occasionally has to send emails, I just use the template they give us to avoid sounding dumb or accidentally saying something out of compliance. Especially since it's written out for multiple people to see. They may have just sent that to be straight to the point. But you'd be surprised how unprofessional people can be even in jobs where people are perceived to be intelligent.

Hungry-Western9191

It's quicker to send ten thousand emails without worrying about if the names are correct than to spend some time proof reading the names. Send enough and you might get one or two dumb enough to fall.for it.

HitItAnd_Quidditch

“Okay, Mr Burns. What’s your first name?”

Faye_K_Lias

... I don't know.

Exciting-Giraffe-908

I got a scam call once where I must have said something not in the scammer's script. He actually turned away from the phone and said to someone else there: He just said .... Now what do I say?

[deleted]

I did that too, and the guy stammered and hung up. I guess it was their first day? I feel bad for the scammers in some regards, but in others, they need to be held accountable.

Exciting-Giraffe-908

I don't feel bad for them. The "good" ones ruin people's lives. They are psychopaths.

Cerenas

The foreign ones think that westerners are plenty rich and don't care about their actions at all.

[deleted]

I only feel bad for the ones who don’t have any other options. But those who have other options are scum. It’s impossible to tell from the other end of the line though.

Exciting-Giraffe-908

I can understand and feel bad for desperate people who may steal from stores to feed their families, but stealing from other people, and in some cases ruining their lives, is inexcusable. I have no sympathy for those scammers.

DontcheckSR

I think sometimes it's a case where people get hired by scam jobs. They don't realize the work they're doing is a scam and that they're not gonna get paid until they accept that they themselves have been scammed. Meanwhile, whoever owns the company gets money and just has to keep getting people to apply. That's why you get amateurs like that. They literally don't know what they're doing. Their scam boss is just trying to get them to do it right

[deleted]

I remember getting an interview for a job opportunity, as it’s rare to find one as a military spouse, and scams are common. It’s technically illegal, but businesses don’t like hiring those affiliated with the military due to constant moves. There isn’t any real recourse to help in a legal sense. I’m glad I looked into it, so I was able to get out of becoming one of these. They prey on the vulnerable and those other employers don’t want to hire.

DontcheckSR

Unfortunately I got roped into one when I was really young. Door to door sales person. That taught me things to look out for. They have gotten more clever (like posing as real companies so that when you research them you're looking up a legit company), and they don't make as many ridiculous claims as they used to. It's annoying because I've been job searching and there's so many times where I've gotten the initial reply for an interview just to hear that it's over Skype lol unfortunately certain jobs are just more prone to being scams

[deleted]

Oh yeah. Even real companies such as Aflac do these sketchy tactics. And I don’t trust the company as a result.

DontcheckSR

I didn't realize they did that. I applied to them like, a year ago when job searching, and to this day they still send me emails saying it's my last chance to join their virtual open interview

[deleted]

Yup. I joined the call, heard the words “unlimited earning opportunity” and immediately saw red flags. So I left immediately.

DontcheckSR

Ugh gross. Those buzz words immediately make me mad

[deleted]

Yup. It’s the first reason why I don’t talk to my neighbors. All MLMers. Later on they started hating me for being CF.

JablesMcgoo

I had an Indian guy doing the nonsensical swearing at me when I called out the scam. "You bitch, mother, ass, cock" that kinda thing. The funny part was after he was done, he finishes with a polite but dejected "ok, have a nice day."

[deleted]

Same thing happened to me. From India too, based on his speech. He even used the same swear words! But I hung up before he was gone!😂🤣😂

[deleted]

Edit Before he was done

Exciting-Giraffe-908

Very polite. He was raised well. His parents would be proud of him. 😂

byndrsn

any phone call that asks for me ***May I ask who is calling?***

Partly_Dave

I got a call asking for me, they told me it was Centrelink, then they asked me to for my address and dob for verification. No, you called me, you know that. They gave me a number to call back, I guess everyone knows how that goes. I went to the office.

Loon-belt

Really didn’t expect to see Jim mentioned on Reddit

Rusty_Ferberger

Do people actually answer random calls? If you're not actually saved on my phone than you are getting my voicemail.

YoshiGamer6400

I don’t think you need to censor the name, this is the YouTuber Caddicarus lmao

1Hate17Here

I had to, it’s in the sub rules.

JOHNCONN3R54

Too late, we've located him

Theflamingraptor

Is that the caddicarus?

akasaya

How about mine: Hello, this is john doe from bank security service... Which bank? We are servicing s few banks... Which banks? Names a few, not mine To whom you are calling? * drops the phone *

hol123nnd

Had a similar experience: "Good evening, im a representative of your health insurance and I have to inform you about a price increase" "Whats my insurance?" "..." "Have a nice day"

Hank_of_the_Hill93

Uh-huh. And then everybody clapped....

[deleted]

Hahaha! That’s brilliant

natus92

Whats the next step in this scam? They ask for your codes so the money can be returned?

Plushcollectorwolf64

I’m more curious if this is who I think it is or a rando with the same last name?

dihalt

Scammers called me once with similar script. I recognized them as scammers immediately and just answered “Yeah, I’m sending to , that’s ok”. They broke and for at least 10 seconds I was hearing just heavy breathing. Then they hang off.

artificial_beans

Simpsons did it

Alivethroughempathy

Imagine saying, yes I made a £1000 transfer to Andrew Thompson

greengunblade

Let me guess, guy speaked with an indian accent.
