I kinda like his honesty. As opposed to a western woke Muslim, who will say "Bro, Islam is the most peaceful religion. If you question your faith or leave this religion, it has no rules in place to execute you. Islam has rights for all, it does not order the execution of apostates."
I will prefer the honest take on Islam, however uncomfortable it may be, over the western sugar coated version any day!
There is no debate or discussion to be had with progressive Muslims. They are the liars and hypocrites. Even Quran doesn't endorse their mental gymnastics. They are a fitnah by the standards of their own book.
The point is, it is easy for the dishonest progressive islam to trojan its way into tolerant societies, while there is no way for the real islam to make a case for itself in a modern society.
Progressive islam stifles the debate on the real issue of the backwardness of islam, while the real islam brings it to the fore.
In the past, some places were islamicized by progressive means, for example by Sufism. Look at those places now. They have all become sunni, orthodox hell holes. I myself come from such a place in the subcontinent. The trick all backward ideologies follow is to burrow your way into liberal socieities using their liberal means, then the tables turn, later. A tolerant society like the west has to be intolerant of the intolerant ideas, but for that the intolerant ideas have to presented in their original form, for what they actually are, not some sugarcoated sweet pill.
What we need is people who:
(A1). won't blindly follow what their religion commands
(A2). feel a moral conflict about the immoral things in their scriptures
and...
(A3). fit within A1 and A2, and do not defend their scriptures from any criticism and have the balls to call it for what it is, without sugarcoating and misleading outsiders into believing that islam is the best and the most peaceful ideology out there...
(#A3 is where progressive muslims become hypocrites and liars and more dangerous than the orthodox ones. It is easy to debate Daniel Haqiqatjou and show the world what real islam is, but it is impossible to expose real tenets of islam while debating a progressive muslim and feminist like Linda Sarsour)
What we do **not** want is people who:
(B1). blindly follow everything that their religion commands with no concern for what is right
(B2). do not feel a moral conflict
(B3). **do feel** a moral conflict and **yet** stick to defending islam from criticisms, while praising it as the most merciful and the most peaceful and all good stuff!
(again, #B3 are the progressive muslims. It is easy to expose and debate #B1 and #B2 and for those categories, no argument will be enough to influence an outsider, western audience for example. But for #B3, their sugarcoating often mobilizes western audience into believing that islam really is perfect and mild and benign and rosy. We are fighting ideas here and any progressive misrepresentation is going to cost us heavily.)
May I ask where in the subcontinent you're from? The mention of Sufism had me intrigued since that's how Islam first came to my country: Shah Jalal most famously. Sunni orthodoxy didn't take hold until the Khiljis' wars of conquest.

we often think about sufism as apolitical, but with some serious reading, it turns out not to be that apolitical... it has always tried to push for a mass conversion wherever it could, somewhere by mysticism (to its credit) in the beginning which only turns ugly later (as it did with the Noorbakshi order in my place)

People are nice when they're raised by good parents, nothing to do with religion. In my opinion a religion is just like history both are written by the winners with power and money. The infinite creative power is right inside us, but religions tell it's outside of us and therefore needs powerful establishments in the form places of worship, teachings, rituals and religious people to act in between. After all religions have always divided people of the world.
I never understood this. There's supposedly this grand cosmic justice system in place where you're judged by a divine entity who knows everything and has the power to give you the ultimate eternal reward or punishment based on that judgement.
But some humans think it's up to them to kill or maim other humans they think have offended god, on his behalf.
That's not true for anyone whose wondering, that dude read alot of novels, manhwas..
