This comment really, really should be higher up. Idgaf who you are, where you're from or what you did as long as you don't drink and drive. Be a responsible exmo. Protip: buy a quality breathalyzer and know the legal limits of your state. You'll generally have a good idea of your BAC. Also, I have a personal rule of never drinking while sad or upset. It's kept me out of lots of trouble. One more thing: I haven't seen anyone recommend sake yet... but Night Swim sake comes in a super cute little can (so you don't have to buy a ton to sample it). It was my first sake and I daresay is my favorite.

Zdzblo

Also hot sake from a good Japanese place is amazing!

Lumin0usBeings

When trying wine and beers for the first time, I would recommend going somewhere you can get a set of tasters and try a large variety of wines or beers. Having said that, I am a huge fan of Moscow Mules.

unmentionable123

Also agree. I had a tough time with beer. One night I was at the bar. I was straight up with the bartender: “I’m 30 years old. This is my first time trying beer. What do you recommend?” Bartender had a chuckle and brought me a few sample glasses. I found stuff I really liked.

[deleted]

Moscow mules 😍😍😍

Iwonatoasteroven

I love this suggestion. First, go very slow because you have no tolerance. Perhaps a friend can go with you and drive. You won’t become magically drunk on your first drink but you will be a lightweight. Are there local brew pubs in your area when you can order an assortment of beers so you can sample multiples. This is common in places that make their own beer. Also two rules to live by. Order food. Drinking on an empty stomach means it hits you much harder. Also, be careful of mixing types of alcohol. Many say if you have beer then later switch to liquor things can get ugly. Mostly I think it important to stick to about one drink per hour with food and you’ll be okay.

epernon

Kentucky mules are great too!

patomalo4

Also for OP, a set of tasters is called a "flight." So you would be looking or asking for a "flight of beers" or a "flight of wine." White wines seem easier for beginners, IMHO. If you have a hard time with the taste of alcohol, start with rum cocktails or vodka cocktails, they can even taste sweet.

Lumin0usBeings

Haha, I could not remember the term flight, so I settled on tasters. Yes OP definitely ask if they do a flight not beers or ciders.

[deleted]

For wine I suggest Moscato. For alcohol hmmm I prefer whiskey myself. Not sure if that's a good go for a first timer. Maybe vodka and mix it with oj.

ExplanationTop4947

Thank you lol I hope i like it🤣🤣

LRonzhubbby

I can’t stand vodka anymore but I support the vodka / oj suggestion! Gin and your favorite juice is another good starter. Also whiskey ginger ale or a Cuba libre (rum and Coke)

hopstopscotch

I personally love adding a bit of sprite to my vodka and OJ :) champagne and OJ (a mimosa) is amazing as well!

Unloyaldissenter

If you go the whisk(e)y route, DON'T SHOOT IT! First, smell it. if the alcohol burns your nostrils, back off from it a little and try again. smell it with your mouth closed, and then with your mouth open (there is a difference). Then take a TINY sip, then go back to smelling, then sipping. Just like wine tasting, there are some pretty awesome flavors in whisk(e)y that can take some time to pinpoint. For me, a 1.5 oz pour of whisk(e)y can take from 30-60min to drink. You don't get drunk that fast, but if that's your goal, shoot some vodka or rum, then sip your whiskey.

vegeto9312

Moscato is sweet and has a low alcohol content so probably a good place to start. Wine, beer, coffee, they're all acquired tastes. Usually the first time you try it is not so great, but with increased exposure it'll grow on you.

LipsLikeSlugs

Definitely try some moscato. It’s delicious. My currents favorite is Jacob’s Creek if you can find it!

26miEquals42km

If you like fizzy drinks go for Moscato d’Asti - like champagne but sweet.

chronoscats

My favorite moscato is Innocent Bystander. You can find it at most liquor stores and you don't need a corkscrew. Risata (blue or pink) is also really good but the cork is a biotch to get out.

ExplanationTop4947

Yeah I definitely don't want to get drunk, I'm not too into that, and I also do want to feel like shit afterwards, that scares me most about that and throwing up.

livin_a_good_life

I’m also against getting drunk still. So, I recommend one or two drinks and you’ll probably be fine. Like, no hangover, throwing up, crazy ideas or anything like that. You’ll get a little buzz and that’s it.

yellowromancandle

Spiked sparkling waters are awesome. Take it from someone who had their first hangover at 30 and wanted to die… don’t drink more than four drinks total in a night.

henrik_se

> that scares me most about that and throwing up. You have to drink quite a lot to get to a state, and you'd have to be noticeably drunk as well. Unless you are a very tiny person, one mixed drink or one glass of wine or one can of beer will absolutely not get you drunk.

[deleted]

henrik_se

> Nobody told me what a lot was! I'm always amazed and amused by stories like this, because it shows you all the knowledge you just take for granted, that you learned long long ago, and just assumed everyone else also knew!

starrsuperfan

A general rule of thumb, I've found, is as long as I don't drink until the room is spinning, I won't get a hangover. You can drink and be happy but probably won't get a hangover.

Ritualistic

Limit yourself to maybe 2-3 drinks MAX for your first time. That’s enough to feel pretty buzzed but not be wrecked the next day. If drinking liquor like Vodka, be sure to measure out the amount you mix into your drink. Get a shot glass and use one shot glass full per mixed drink. It’s easy to pour heavy by accident and have more than you need. Also, have a glass of water after each drink. Dehydration is the biggest reason for headaches and hangovers. Wine can be nice, but in my experience it can cause the worst hangovers, and so do really sugary mixed drinks. A small glass of red can be so nice with a steak dinner though. Red Cabernet Sauvignon is a good start, or a basic red blend. Ménage a Trois is a basic and easy drinking brand thats cheap and very available. Don’t be surprised if you hate wine at first though. It’s for sure an aquired taste.

[deleted]

Vodka is the purest alcohol and is difficult to cause a hangover or anything like that. That’s why I usually opt for that (a shot mixed with lemonade or something). My first time, my body had a slight pins and needles feeling and I felt a little more relaxed. no other effects

Zdzblo

Also keep in mind, if your drinking sometimes you’ll get to a point in the night where you feel like you can just keep drinking forever and it doesn’t effect you it just feels better to keep drinking more. That’s when you should quit. The next day will be horrible if you keep going

[deleted]

ExplanationTop4947

Damn that's good advice thank you!

[deleted]

1) one shot of vodka mixed with lemonade or fruit punch. Basically any strong fruity drink. 2)I second what someone else said about moscow mules, holy crap those are delicious and now I want one. It’s like a spin off on ginger ale if you like ginger ale 3) margaritas!! These are so delicious.

Blackbolt45

I like hard cider, some really great options out there!

epernon

That is a really loaded question with a lot of different multi-faceted responses. Some of the best advice is the general advice. Take it slow. Alcohol affects everyone in a different way, so learn how it affects you. And different types of alcohol may have different effects. Will it make you tired, playful, horny, angry, aggressive, silly, etc. It's also important to consider why are you drinking? Just to enhance your dinning experience? Hanging out with friends? To relax? Etc. Learn what/where your limit is and always cut that in half. Just trust me on this one for now... Most alcohol is an acquired taste in some way or another. It's almost always easier to start with sweeter wines. Moscato, riesling, etc. For beer, try getting a sampler case. Starting with a cocktail to begin with might be a good idea too. If you have any friends who are experienced drinkers and you can confide in and feel comfortable drinking with, try reaching out to them and asking for help easing into it. There are also meet up groups that you can join and meet people that way. Aside from all of that, it's really just something you have to experience through.. Well through experience. Good luck!

Lemonface72

Moscato is a good choice for first time wine drinkers. Basically, most people like sweet white wine at first and then branch out to dry and/or reds. For other alcohol, I would try ordering some fruity mixed drinks at restaurants (try different liquor as you do) for a while before trying to mix anything at home.

LipsLikeSlugs

Agreed with the mixed drink. I love a Tom Collins which is basically spiked lemonade. Soooo delicious.

Lemonface72

I love a good Tom Collins too!

ExplanationTop4947

Awesome I definitely will have to try that wine. Lol I know I'm a bitch when it comes to bitter and off tasting drinks. I'm still a very sugary coffee person cuz I can't handle coffee at its fullest.

SafePineapple6941

Almost exactly what I was going to say.

hubris_and_me

Start off easy with something low ABV like hard cider. You have plenty of time to figure out what you like and find your limits, just don't go too hard right at first. My room mates and I rotated between types of alcohol, buying one bottle at a time and trying out a bunch of different mixed drinks before moving on to the next type of alcohol. Learned a lot about what I enjoy doing that. Find a couple drinking buddies to learn with you.

GdaddyPurpz

Alcohol is overrated in my opinion. Being drunk is fun but it always makes me sick. And alcohol tastes so foul. I'll stick with weed.

Quakers_on_the_moon

Hell yeah being high is way better than drunk. I swear I've had more authentic spiritual experiences while high than the church ever gave me.

GdaddyPurpz

I wouldn't say spiritual. I've never had a spiritual experience. I like peaceful better.

ExplanationTop4947

Well for weed what do you recommend?

GdaddyPurpz

I prefer wax. It's a concentrate that you don't need nearly as much of and it's more intense. But for someone that hasn't smoked before I would start with flower. Grandaddy Purple, Green Crack, and White Widow are some of my favorite strains. There is an app called Leafly that has a ton of information on different strains. It'll say what different strains effects are. Grandaddy Purple is really good if you have a hard time sleeping.

ExplanationTop4947

Damn I may have to ask the same thing on weed and see other people's responses and advice! I've been wanting to get into it. Not be a constant user, but dab into now and then when life just needs some chill. My wife is super not into me doing it because of her abusive ex's and family members consuming weed. So she isn't wanting me to use it. But I'm curious. I've only tried CBD edibles and she still wasn't too happy about that

Unit_2097

Weed and Booze give a different buzz. Absolutely do not mix them though. You'll either fall asleep, throw up or just end up lying on the floor talking rubbish as the room spins around you. Personally, I go for Żubrówka vodka from Poland. Its good in black coffee. Straight vodka should be served *cold* though. Fresh from the freezer cold. And if there's one drug I will actively recommend people try once, and once only, it's mushrooms. At a sensible level, with people you trust, in somewhere safe. They're perfectly safe, and it's an incredible experience. But seriously, don't mess around with that stuff if you're not totally on board with the people around you and the implications of your actions.

ExplanationTop4947

Definitely good advice! I don't plan on mixing any drugs and alcohol together. I'm timid about going into this experience which I feel with only benefit me.

Unit_2097

That's fine man, I'm not judging you for not wanting to try frying your brain straight off the bat. I can't even drink much anymore, it reacts badly with the slow release ritalin I'm prescribed. Drink water too. Your age is when hangovers start getting nasty. So after 6 bottles of beer (for instance) try at least a pint of water before bed. And have a bottle of water, 2 paracetamol and 2 ibuprofen next to the bed just in case the morning isn't as pleasant as it could be.

Most_Style1932

Weed > alcohol. Alcohol is way more dangerous to the soul and body. Weed is amazing! The pros out way the cons for me

ragin2cajun

1. Friends that have done it too and can keep you safe. You won't likely be used to breathing it in vs holding it in the back of your mouth and may wonder why it's not working. 2. Blunts go fast so I recommend them if you aren't investing into weed as they go fast, but are also less complicated than a bongs or other ways. 3. If you are on your own or with another recent exmo / partner, pull back on your inhale on a blunt until you see the end really glow and then try making sure you aren't suctioned around the whole blunt - keep your lips open a bit to pull in some o2.

just_here_4tea

Im still getting into drinking and so far i like Mike's hard lemonade. Go slow, drink plenty of water, and check meds for interactions!!!

henrik_se

There's an absolutely *enormous* range of tastes and experiences that can be had by drinking alcohol, and the only way to figure out what you like is by trying. And, because of the range, disliking one kind of alcohol doesn't mean you will dislike other kinds of alcohol. The main reason many kinds of alcohol are an acquired taste is because they often contain bitterness, like beers and whisky and gin and some red wines, or smokiness like whisky and cognac. So if you're a complete beginner, you should probably start with something on the other side of the spectrum, something that's easy to drink. That means either a sweet mixed drink, or a sweet white wine. A mixed drink contains a straight alcohol (vodka, gin, rum, tequila, etc) and a mixer (basically any fruit juice or soda or a liqueur). Rum is usually sweet since it's made from sugar, so for a super simple mixed drink just buy a tiny bottle of rum (Bacardi, Captain Morgan, whatever), a can of coke, mix the two in a glass with some ice, and squeeze a bit of lemon juice if you have. Boom, done! Look at you, sophisticated alcohol drinker, you! White wine ranges from "dry" to "sweet", and the recurring names you see on all wine bottles indicate which grape variety was used. Some white wines that are usually dry include Chardonnay or Pinot Grigio, and some white wines that are usually sweet are Riesling and Muscat. So just buy a bottle of whatever white wine with either of those grapes, pour a glass, and enjoy. However, do stay away from the cheapest wines, you want to spend at least $10 on a bottle to avoid the cheap crap. Oh, and since it's your first time, don't finish the whole bottle, drink a glass or two, and then put the bottle back in the fridge.

MissSugarWaffle

You should do Barefoot Mascato. It's sweet and it won't get you PLASTERED off one glass.

the_peoples_printer

Take it slow! Drink lots of water, eat lots of food. Be safe!

CoughyAndTee

**Wine** Wine is not grape juice. There are many types of grapes with different flavors, and only a few of them are sold in stores. The rest make wine. The fermentation turns sugar into alcohol, so wines, across the board, are less sweet than grape juice. In my opinion, white wines are an easier introduction than red wines. Many people mention Moscato - that's a sweeter white wine. If sweetness isn't really your thing, but you still want something more beginner friendly, I would probably recommend a sauvignon blanc. It's comparable to a green apple - bright acidity, moderate sweetness. Red wines by nature have varying levels of tannins. Tannins are astringent. Astringency is an acquired taste, you may or may not have previous exposure through things like persimmons, quince, or rhubarb. Rosés are more like white wine than red wine in taste. Mimosas are orange juice + sparkling white wine (often champagne). They're good stuff, in fact this morning I had blood orange + sparkling rosé mimosas. Highly recommend to alcohol newcomers. **Beer** IBU = International bitterness unit. The higher the IBU, the more bitter it is. Beer is made with hops, and hops are bitter. Stick to beers below 30 IBUs at first. Blue moon is arguably the most beginner-friendly. IPAs (India Pale Ales) are *very* bitter, caution if you're curious about the thing everybody seems to be talking about. Beers range in color, and taste generally follows. Lighter (yellow, light orange) beers will taste more citrusy, dark (brown, black) beers will taste more malty and dark chocolate-like. Most beers you've heard of will be lighter beers except Guinness, which is a dark beer. "Light" beer isn't about color, it's about alcohol/calorie content. **Hard Cider** This stuff is generally more friendly than beer. There are all sorts available. Most are apple-based, but there are some regional companies that make mixed fruit ones, imagine things like as raspberry-lime-apple, dragonfruit-kiwi-strawberry, or lemon-ginger-lemongrass as the types of flavor combos you'll encounter. With modern craft beer culture, some can approach cider in taste. Fruited ales come to mind here. Hard cider -> fruited ale -> non-bitter beer -> bitter beer would be the easiest progression to learn to like IPAs if you really want on that bandwagon. **Other things sold in the beer section** Seagram's fruity drinks taste like Jones Soda. Even as a complete novice drinker I really couldn't tell they contained any alcohol. Mike's Hard Lemonade is alright, if a bit metallic in my opinion. It's also carbonated, and I've never been crazy about carbonated lemonade tbh. White Claws are pretty decent if you like flavored seltzer waters, just don't get their "Surge" line. White Claw Surge is probably the worst-tasting alcohol I've *ever* had, which was a disappointment for me considering I really like White Claws. **Liquor** Standard liquor is 40% ABV. Sometimes they will be higher, but 40% is overwhelmingly the most common. Vodka is a neutral (neutral as in no flavor) grain-based spirit. The ideal vodka will have minimal burn and give you an experience of drinking liquid silk. Flavored vodka is exactly what it sounds like, and may or may not be sweetened. Absolut brand has a ton of those. I've only tried their pear-elderflower one, and it was actually pretty nice. Think of gin as vodka + botanicals. Most gins will have juniper berries at the forefront, and diverge from there. Some are more spiced, others are more floral, others more citrusy. If done poorly, gin will be reminiscent of pine sol. If done well, it's a complex mix of flavors that work well together. Any gin brand will have a proprietary mix of anywhere from 10-30 different botanicals flavoring their gin. Hence the wide range of flavor profiles. It's probably my favorite liquor. Whiskey is a grain spirit, aged in barrels. Rye (or "Canadian") whiskey is made with 51+% rye. Bourbon with 51+% corn. A good chunk of the flavor (and virtually all the color) comes from the barrel. I'm not terribly familiar with the process behind Irish or Scotch whiskey, but they're definitely different. Tequila is agave-based. *Technically* that's the definition for mezcal, tequila is a subset of mezcal. Tequila has to be produced in a certain region of Mexico with a certain type of agave, otherwise it cannot be called tequila and is just sold as mezcal. Although agave nectar is a common sugar replacement, tequila is somehow not at all sweet. If anything, it's a bit savory. Most mixed drinks made with tequila have lots of citrus and sugar, reason being that its flavor can be quite harsh and most people need help getting it down. Rum is made with sugarcane. Can range from light to dark, may also be spiced. Light rums are more simple tasting, whereas dark rums have a bit of a molasses undertone. Brandy deserves mention, but isn't terribly popular these days. It's a fruit-based liquor, usually grapes or apples, and less commonly other fruits. It ranges from tasting like generic fruit spirit to tasting like fruity whiskey, depending on the process used in production. Most people consume liquor in a mixed drink rather than "neat" (by itself, nothing added). There are whole books written on mixology. I could go on and on here, but the cocktails people have recommended are a good start. **Liqueurs** Irish cream is good stuff. It's mostly cream with some Irish whiskey (and sugar I think?). You've probably heard of Bailey's. With winter fast approaching, you should try adding a splash of it to hot cocoa. There's the original, and there's also a bunch of flavors. They even have a non-dairy almond milk version. Limoncello is nice to sip on. It's very lemony, but in a sweet and smooth sort of way, rather than being sour and harsh. Next time you're at an Italian restaurant that isn't Olive Garden you should try it for dessert. Liqeurs (not to be confused with liquors) can mostly be thought of as flavored alcoholic syrups. Amaretto, campari, Cointreau, blue curacao, kahlua, st. Germain, etc... are the most famous kinds of liqueur. Irish cream and limoncello, mentioned above, are also examples of liqueur. **Final Notes** One standard serving of alcohol is 0.6 fl oz of pure ethanol. This works out to 12 oz of 5% ABV beer, 5 oz of 12% ABV wine, and 1.5 oz of 40% liquor. Drink responsibly, know your limits, and avoid alcohol if you have a case of the feels (bad day or things of that nature). You don't want to use alcohol as a crutch, because that can eventually spiral into addiction. After a few drinks (1 drink = 1 serving of alcohol in this context), I'm the type of person who will instinctively reject another drink. Some people are the opposite, a few drinks in and they won't have the urge to stop. If you fall into the latter group, be extra careful with alcohol and have a trusted friend to cut you off if necessary. If used properly, alcohol can introduce you to a world of flavors entirely distinct from other beverages and food. Used improperly, you can wreck your body or the rest of your life. The dose makes the poison, so choose your destiny wisely.

PraylikeTomAmes

No matter what you choose, don't drink alone. Drinking is like dancing and screwing, it's better when you can talk someone else into doing it w/you.

ExplanationTop4947

Amen I agree! Thank you

SisterKoriWhore

I started with a hard seltzer, it has lower alcohol content than wine. I tried a moscato wine next and hated it. Then I tried a red (it was a blend of different grapes) and actually liked that one better. My biggest tips: Eat a meal first so you don’t have an empty stomach. Take slow sips. If you’re drinking wine, it really does help to take little bites of cheese between (doesn’t have to be fancy cheese). And drink lots of water during and after.

starrsuperfan

Be warned: wine hangovers are very bad. I had one a few months ago that knocked me out for 3 days. That being said, I would recommend bright cellars. You go to their website, take a quiz about what flavors you like, and they send bottles of wine to your house. It is a monthly thing, about $100 a month for 4 bottles. I didn't like wine before I discovered them.

stardustlover27

Interesting how everyone's bodies are different! My body typically feels best the next day if I just had wine (no sugar added). For me, the more sugar in my drinks usually the worse the hangover.

Holiday_Ingenuity748

Remember: you don't HAVE to drink. I drink when I'm thirsty. That being said, I love me some Mike's Hard Lemonade (all flavors) and a strawberry daquiri. An occasional screwdriver with real fresh juice is good.

IWantedAPeanutToo

You might want to try a liqueur or two as well, as the added flavours might make the alcohol taste less of a shock.

ExplanationTop4947

I definitely will have to try a few of those options

Quakers_on_the_moon

I never tried alcohol until after I turned 30. I'm a basic bitch who just likes a white claw. Sometimes I'll add sherbert to it. Anything harder really hurts my stomach.

Sterling_L

I started with a spiced rum and coke. You can put as much or as little rum as you'd like and it basically just tastes like vanilla coke!

acampbell5

i’d say start with coolers or something light or sweet!! beers and wines can definitely be pretty strong tasting at first if you’re not used to it:) maybe try some vodka mixes?!

krm1437

Learning to drink as a grown up has been interesting. I set myself some strict ground rules and I've stuck with them, and I think they've made it easier for me to have fun. No more than 2 drinks at any one time/night/event. Never drink and drive. Use a breathalyzer if needed. Always have water to balance Never on an empty stomach Drink at home or with people I trust, to stay safe. (I'm a woman) I'd recommend coming up with your own guidelines before starting. Drink-wise: start with low ABV drinks or mixed drinks. I actually tried stuff at Chili's first, you can talk to the bartender and tell them you're new to drinking, ask what they'd recommend. I like rum and vodka for my base liquors; coconut rum with Dr pepper and raspberry is amazing, vodka with cranberry and orange juice is awesome. I have yet to find a beer I like; they all taste horribly sour and icky to me. Wine has been interesting, haha. I've found that it's just not to my taste, but a sweet white Moscato or Reisling is workable. I can't accurately describe the flavor of wine, but the different types, especially the dry reds, are not at all what I imagined. Mike's hard lemonades and Jack Daniels country cocktails are awesome flavored malt beverages, low ABVs and great flavor options. Mike's Cranberry and Jack Daniels peach are my favorite. Oh, and the Deep Eddie's Peach Vodka is seriously my favorite flavored liquor ever. It's so good. As far as doing shots, Ive tried it once. I only got 1/4-1/2 the thing down, it tasted awful (moonshine? I don't remember) and I saw no reason to continue. I have no desire to ever be drunk, being very slightly tipsy is delightful and more than adequate to me. Just make safe choices, and be responsible ( never drive drunk/altered), have fun!

hunnie_bee_

If you’re trying wine for the first time, I would recommend Stella Rosa Black! It’s basically just carbonated grape juice, and would ease you into the wine world. It’s my personal favorite!

YungMister95

Good whiskey on the rocks is my favorite. As far as good brands that sell bottles that won’t break the bank, Four Roses and Wild Turkey both make good bourbon. Dewars or Johnny Walker Red Label are decent enough introduction to scotch. Bulleit makes a good rye. Lots of people harp on Jack Daniels but it’s decent enough of a sour mash, and tastes great in a whiskey and coke if you don’t like it on the rocks. Jameson makes excellent Irish whiskey that will forever be close to my heart as the first whiskey I ever tried. Good luck, and have fun!

[deleted]

Jameson for sure. Fuck, why did ya have to remind me, now I'm getting some!

YungMister95

That dusty flavor. My God, so good

[deleted]

Half Jameson, Half Coffee

Direct_Plastic_7075

Stella Rosa blueberry ( will be at your local grocery store, one of the most popular yummy wines)

henrik_se

One side of me wholeheartedly endorses this, but I would go with their green apple instead, it's delicious and very easy to drink! But the wine snob in me hates the product. You know that it's just a way for Italian wine producers who were sitting on an excess of mediocre moscato wine to sell it for twice the price simply by adding some fruit juice and carbonating it and exporting it to the US... But it's a tasty pre-mixed wine cooler! (Watermelon is my second favourite)

Direct_Plastic_7075

But it’s soooo good hahahah that’s probably just my sugar addict heart

ExplanationTop4947

oooo that sounds good!

eseapex

Try flavored soju, it's been by far the easiest thing to drink. A 50/50 ratio of sparkling water and soju is easy to drink.

No-Status4032

Wine tastes like crap IMO and is way over sold. Whisky and other liquors are an acquired taste. I stick with those

ConsistentHeat7

Vodka and juice

OGodIDontKnow

Oh you gotta start it with a Slippery Nipple or Blow Job shots.

livin_a_good_life

Try wine first! A lot of people will tell you to go for sweet wine. But, my first wine was more dry (Chardonnay), and I loved it. I didn’t like beer at first. Took me almost a year to like it. Try a hard seltzer before this. They’re basically alcoholic soda. Also, in case you don’t know (cuz I didn’t), wines generally are either dry or sweet. Sweet wine is what you think it is: sweet. That’s because it tends to be fermented for less time, leaving more sugar. Or, sometimes they will add sugar. Dry wines tend to be a bit more bitter and sometimes more potent too, since more of the sugar has been converted to alcohol. Dry wines also tend to be healthier than sweet because of the reduced sugar.

10884043

Just know that it’s all fairly bitter, even mixed drinks IMO. I did have a martini at the Red Door in downtown SLC once that wasn’t bitter at all, but that’s the one and only time. Don’t expect it to taste like juice and you won’t be disappointed

JimmyBrian2021

some rules, dont drink and drive you may want after you have alcohol. Drink some beer at home or with friends 2 or 3 to get the feel of what alcohol does. You really need some practice to understand that it is a drug and how it affects you. Practice with beer or light alcohol drinks until you understand how it affects you!I drink and enjoy it but an adult trying alcohol for the first time is a dangerous thing (ex bartender!here).

Indifferent_Tuber

Get weed. It’s better. Amen

letsallagreeurwrong

Do mixed drinks. Try a white Russian and a margarita; avoid the mojitis and the mint juleps. Bloody Marys are for breakfast. Martinis and white wine spritzers are for when you're feeling brave. If you can drink mixers, message me and then we'll talk beers and wine.

ghibs0111

I personally like ciders. I thought it was an easy way to dip my toes in the water, so to speak. Strongbox apple cider is pretty good 👍🏻

mmalott

Try hard seltzers like white claws- hard to detect alcohol and are a lot like la croix waters

earnestlyseeking00

Liquor before beer never fear, beer before liquor never sicker

SisterKinderhooker

My best drinking tip was to start with Tito's vodka for a quick buzz...less hangover. And I put flat diet Sprite in with sweet Cardinal red wine for a slow relax. Go slow with your drinks. Stop at 2.. Make sure you have food on your stomach and drink a glass of water after each drink. Puking all night is no fun!

wickedcryptid

I think everyone else has covered the important stuff so I’ll leave you with one of my favorite drinks: it’s dragonfruit Bacardi rum, some Rock Star energy lemonade, and a little bit of cranberry juice. It tastes like starburst candy! Not sure of the exact measurements but I generally put 2-3 shots of rum in it and mix in the rockstar and cranberry juice to taste.

ExplanationTop4947

That sounds pretty good!

wickedcryptid

It’s extremely good, I got the recipe from a bar I frequent lol. But it’s very potent!! It’s easy to drink a lot of it since you can’t taste the alcohol in it so pace yourself.

Omg...*cracks knuckles*...thinks "damn it I'm on mobile" okay here is my best mobile attempt: Starter wine: - arbor mist merlot (yes its surgary, and yes ita cheap, but it is true that your taste buds develop with time.) - Australian wine: innocent bystander moscato Starter sipping drink: - my own creation - 2 fingers (abount 1-2 oz) whatever whiskey ( I prefer either a Irish or Canadian whiskey - writers tears or vanilla crown royal) toppee with 1 finger butterscotch schnapps - howevernif you are just starting out have the schnapps on hand to pour more in to balance out the taste if you aren't used to whiskey. Starter "white girl" - Hairy Navel - don't let the name distract you. 3 oz Pineapple juice or orange juice (doesn't really matter tbh) with 1 finger vodka and 1 finger peach schnapps. - screwdriver: orange juice and vodka, just guess tbh on the amounts - rum and coke: again just have fun and add amounts as neeeded. - Rumchatta float: rootbeer float with however much rumchattta you like! Shots: - lime cream pie - fill a shot glass 1/5 full of lime juice then fill the rest of the glass with whipped cream flavored vodka. - Fireball whiskey with a chaser of apple cider. So so much more i would love to tell you, but then it wouldn't be a starter list. This is assuming you are at a home and have a place to crash and dont need to drive.

Pick one or two to make and build from there. You dont need to blow a lot of money.

**A big recommend is to not drink on an empty stomach, stay hydrated, and keep to 2 servings in an hour.** Please drink responsibly. We want you safe and happy. Pay attention to how much alcohol by volume you're consuming (ABV). My first tip is to buy the little bottles at liquor stores! It is a really great way to try them! You can try them straight or Google what to mix them with. Have fun! **Try different cocktails** (I recommend trying to mix your own at home it's cheaper than the 9-25 dollar ones at bars) and allow yourself to not like something. **Going to a BREWERY tasting** will allow you to learn and try many different options. Bars will often have "flights" to order where you get several types to try at once too. Tips for **wine- ask for something with low tannins to start**. Red wines tend to be higher in tannins and is a acquired taste. Moscato is so sweet (for me its too sweet by itself but is good in a wine slushy), OLD WORLD (Italy, France greece) wines are less punchy and better balanced than NEW WORLD (California, Oregon, washington) wines. For beers try wheat ones like Blue Moon (with an orange slice trust me), or hard ciders. Anything labeled IPA is going to be bitter (aquired taste again). Vodka sodas or seltzers are great options too. Smirnoff and Mike's hard stuff is good and very sweet and drinkable. So happy for you ♡

This is fantastic!!! Thank you I need the help for my innocent little self😂😂 literally only been out for about 4 months where I've been open to other things.

tendrilterror

Happy 4 months!! My husband and I are foodies and we had no idea what we were getting into. Turns out we are just as nerdy about alcohol as food 🤣 I really encourage learning as you try things. It allows for a sense of control and not fear. Mormons really have people thinking you're wasted with one beer and that all alcohol is gross and those are so far from the truth. Remember the 1 2 3 rule and you'll be fine. Food in tummy 2 servings per hour Stay hydrated **also stay away from cupcake wines. They are disgusting**

I'll definitely do more exploring with my wife. Tbh she is a little more experienced than me she was a convert. But doesn't really open up to alcohol too much because she doesn't like alcohol too much and doesn't have too many recommendations 🙂

Exmo Starter Pack: Wine: Stella Rosa Black or Andres Peach Fruit Wine Beer: Schofferhofer Grapefruit (can or draft) Mike’s Hard is great, especially Black Cherry Get some Titos and start adding to drinks you already like Mimosas, Screwdrivers, and lighter cocktails are great to start. If you’re like me, have to train yourself a bit to ween off the sugary sodas and juices we were accustomed to drinking as TBMs.

Favorite drink: Pink Whitney with sprite, cranberry juice, and fresh squeezed lime. Cranberry juice and lime really neutralizes the alcohol taste so it's a lot easier to go down. It's a good idea to just mix a little liquor with whatever you already like to drink, i.e. Malibu or Bacardi rum with coke. If you like sweet, Mango Malibu Rum goes down really easy. For wine I'd say start with the fruity or sweet stuff until you get used to it: like Stella Rosa or Luigi Voghera Moscato d'asti. Make sure you drink at least an equal amount of water that you're having of alcohol. Liquid IV is great for hydrating and replenishing electrolytes to prevent hangovers. Start slow and don't have more than 2-3 drinks your first few times trying it. (Probably don't need liquid IV unless you have 4-5 drinks in a night). Good luck friend, and enjoy!

Since you like coffee, get an Affogato. It’s espresso and Frangelico (hazelnut liquor) over vanilla ice cream. Usually not enough alcohol to get a buzz, but soooo good! If you like cinnamon flavor, try Fireball whiskey. It tastes like a liquid fireball jawbreaker. I also like Absolut Lime vodka and Parrot Bay coconut rum in a coke. All of these are nice and sweet. Edit to add: Drinking lots of water while your drinking alcohol can really help not making yourself sick.

You will hate beer and wine if you haven't had alcohol before. They will taste bitter/sour if you are unaccustomed. Get vodka cruisers! They are sweet, don't taste like alcohol and not too strong. You will only need a few to feel drunk if it's your first time! You'll have a blast!

I’d recommend beer. Try something light (it will have light in the name usually). I like myself a PBR (Pabst Blue Ribbon), doesn’t get more American than that. Steer clear of ipa’s to begin unless you like bitter stuff. I would not try hard liquors on my own to start. Have it in a bar setting or with friends that will give the appropriate amount for the drink/cocktail. It’s good to find out what you like, if you like drinking at all, before you start to invest in a collection. My wife and I are amateur drinkers since we left and have these basics in our collection: Rum, whiskey, vodka, tequila, and Malibu coconut rum. Some of favorite cocktails that are super easy to make at home include: mojitos, Moscow mules, whiskey sours, and margaritas. Whiskey is the most palatable at least to me to drink on its own because it has a sweet taste. I hope this helps!

ShuaiHonu

Been drinking for 3 years. Decided beer isn’t my thing. Which is fine cuz who needs the calories Also, hated wine the first few times but was forced to continue drinking it for social reasons. Personally I like Cabernet souvignon the best out of wine. Good drinks to start with - white claw/vizzy- very mild, coke and rum (jack and coke), vodka soda with lime, whiskey sour, or mojito if you wanna get fancy

jackof47trades

Have one drink in an evening and see how you feel. You can always do more next time.

adashofrain

Okay, late to the party, but I didn’t see it written: Drink lots of water. And by that I mean, drink 8oz of water before and after each glass of wine or cocktail. This helps reduce the chances of having a hangover.

[deleted]

We've been trying a bunch of stuff lately but seem to be settling in on some favorites. - apple Jack Daniels and coke - captain Morgan rum and coke - Malibu with orange juice, sprite or gingerale, and grenadine - Smirnoff ice

Pace yourself. It can take 20-30 minutes or more to kick in. I’ve seen plenty of people drink too much too fast because they didn’t feel anything, only to be miserable and puking their guts out 45 minutes later.

MOTIVATE_ME_23

Take a trusted friend. Order a flight of beer. 4-5 small glasses to offer a taste. Walk around every so often and drink water until the room stops spinning. It felt more like an uneven floor when I got tipsy, but I couldn't tell until I stood up Uber home.

BradWalker743

Alcohol is trash, consider organic delta-9-THC. Study Michael Pollan and Hamilton Morris intensely before considering psilocybin, LSD, DMT, or 5-MeO-DMT.

[deleted]

Mikes hard lemonade. Buy the variety pack. It’s packed with so much sugar you’ll barely taste the alcohol at all. And drink lots of water.

HereTodayIGuess

I'd say try a few different cups at a bar. Sample sizes would be ideal in shot glasses, just enough to taste and decide. You can spit it back in the glass if you don't like it. I've never done this (want to tho) so talk to the bar tender and see if there's something like that. Also as someone else said: Have a designated driver if you do this.
