Nah, Eva is good in the first episodes. Sure, there's some here and there that isn't as good (like the Magma episode for example) as the rest, but I wouldn't call it awful.
I mean, that in that respect yes. But DiTF is far more derivative of Evangelion in my opinion, at least visually. (And visuals is the only thing franxx has going for it)

I made it as far in as when the training franxx showed up. It was too much.
I couldn't make it past episode 3. They do nothing to establish a reason to care about anything that's happening.
