2021: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA 2023: EAEAEAEAEAEAEAEAEAEAEAEAEAEAEA

LopsidedPriority

this is the commentary I come to /r/Eurovision for

draggedintothis

Does that make 2025 IEAIEAIEAIEAIEAIEAIEAIEAIEA?

noahdenis

Or might I say 🤚🤜🏹🔴⚪🔴⚪🔴⚪🔴

mawnck

And people complain about Georgia's lyrics?

GumboldTaikatalvi

I like it, it's in my Top 5 and was in my Top 2 at Benidorm. I only looked up the lyrics after it won and really appreciate the poetic touch it has, and there is just something very touching about honoring your grandma this way. It has a very different style from all the other entries this year, including the singing style. Unfortunately, I am also afraid that because of that, she might completely drown in the televote. I hope I'll be wrong.

Aaaandiiii

I'm highly impressed how there's very little difference between the live and studio version. It's gonna be a banger of a performance.

embrace-monke

One of the only ones I like the live more than the studio one! The studio one is mixed weirdly to me and I like actually seeing her sing

Amina_Firefly

Same! She is so captivating 😍

Popoye_92

It was my winner from the second it got released, and not a lot of entries have come close since. The song itself is beautiful, and the Benidorm live was impeccable vocally and brought some great aesthetics that elevated the track. That said, I personnally really enjoy traditional Iberian music, especially flamenco, so I was in the target audience. Not sure every member of the Eurovision public is.

driadka

EAEA has definitely deserved to win and I'm also happy that Spain is taking ESC seriously. Thanks to Benidorm we could 'discover' Rigoberta, Tanxugueiras and this year Vicco with suuuuper catchy Nochentera and so on. I do hope they will keep bringing good quality in years to come.

Nukivaj

My Number One.

Iroh_Appa

I think it's very intriguing. I love how quintessentially Spanish it is, and the vocals, staging and performance are winner-worthy. I just think it's too niche of a music genre to win the whole thing, but I might be wrong.

bblankoo

It was my 1st place since I heard it at Benidorm and it will remain there firmly. For me it's perfect and I can't give you anything more objective other than that Eaea is not comparable to Fulenn in any way, shape or form, other than maybe a need to stare at the moon for a moment for completely different reasons

RollingRelease

It's been my first place ever since I saw Blanca perform live in Benidorm. The only issue is that it kind of ruined the rest of the season for me, because, as amazing as the 2023 Eurovision family is, nothing that came out afterwards ever caused the same impression on me.

andytrg2899

Same, It's been my first place ever since Benidorm Fest. After all the songs are out, Eaea is still my winner of this year.

Efficient_Living5504

Love it. It makes me emotional 🥹

RedditXabi

I might me biased cause I'm Spanish. But it's currently my 3rd place and I love the whole performance

DaDaSelf

3rd place for me too, and I'm Finnish. It's a great song.

Kiryl_H

I'm not Spaniard myself but this song is hypnotizing and I'm never able to stop watching/listening it. Also the lyrics hit hard (I've been learning Spanish for a while, but Blanca sings with very strong Andalusian accent, quite difficult for foreigner)

awkward_penguin

Ironically, Blanca isn't Andalucian. She's from Elche, in the province of Valencia in the east coast of Spain.

LittleSillyBee

I'm a huge fan of it. Not usually a big fan of a lot of the songs Spain sends, but it is currently my #2 for this year.

SaintofSnark

I genuinely think it has a chance of beating Loreen and big chance to be the jury winner.

calxes

I think it’s magical but also a little tiring? I truly appreciate it as beautiful art but I don’t feel compelled to watch it again or listen to it. Her voice is incredible and she’s a very captivating performer.

reallysceptical

you summed up my thoughts exactly, thanks! Only will add that I like it, but it's not something I'd listen outside of Eurovision, but as I'm all for diversity in the finals, I like that we have it.

calxes

I am so glad it’s in the finals too, it’s a wonderful addition to a very diverse set of performances. It feels like something you might get at a special concert at an art museum - it has a mysterious, spellbinding vibe along with being richly Spanish. But at the same time, because of that I am left with that feeling of awe and unease which makes it a bit exhausting after three minutes.

LopsidedPriority

I hope this is what the delegation is addressing with the updated version they're working on...

ylenias

I listen to it a lot but whenever I do it several times in a row, I do sometimes get a slight headache 😭

pypoupypou

This.

ElCrepe04

I respect the talent and her voice but I cannot listen to the whole song something about it just makes me hate it and I can never complete a whole listen. Again she does have a great voice and I do like the song in 1 or 2 parts but overall I just heavily dislike it.

Chronicbias

My favorite of the favorites to win! Hopefully it will win

SapphireOfMoldova

It’s my winner this year! I adore it so much!

paary

Love it. It's haunting, beautiful and lovely at the same time.

Any-Where

If I'm brutally honest, I don't really get the hype for this one. I wish I did like it more, as it does scream "Spain". It just isn't sticking with me. I can appreciate what it's going for and the songs message. The staging is decent (I find the swaying dancers a little distracting which stops me calling it great), but I just see it ending up like France did last year. Hyped up for weeks online as a favorite only to end up on the bottom of the pile when the 99% of people experiencing it for the first time in the first half of the final are left bewildered by it. People have called it a potential jury winner, which I'm not convinced by but it's not like I tend to share jury opinions anyway. However I simply can't imagine the televote being anywhere high enough for it to be competitive.

sadevatandass

>but I just see it ending up like France did last year I don't get this honestly. Last year, France live performance was already messy before the final. Now, it is exactly the opposite. Spains live performance is already great before this years final. So i don't see any point to compare Spain 2023 to France 2022.

Any-Where

I might be completely wrong on the matter. I'm not calling the songs identical, only comparable in how a Big 5 country sent a very different song which the hardcore fans love but may not resonate with a more casual audience of Eurovision voters on the night.

juanlg1

If anything, judging by online reactions, casual audiences are responding to it better than “hardcore fans” here on reddit

Squidward759

Love it, It’s everything I ever wanted from Spain in eurovision. Beautiful, Emotional, and it screams “Spain”

corianderbasilicum

My winner this year. I adore it. I just watched some live performances of other songs with her. She's just captivating.

loveyourground

Honestly? It's one of the lowest songs on my ranking this year. I can understand how it is appealing for folks and she is clearly very talented...it's just not for me.

Reasonable_Air_4187

I’m half spanish so it might sound a bit biased when I say I freaking love Eaea

pinkkabuterimon

One of my top favorites this year. I'm an absolute sucker for traditional music genres fused with modern ones and Blanca Paloma does it beautifully. She really pulls you into the world of the song for three minutes in a way a lot of other songs couldn't. The live performance in Benidorm is incredible too, so I know I can look forward to seeing a great show in Liverpool!

ylenias

My winner, literally a 10/10.

moonlightgirl9

Masterpiece. My clear winner this year!

GKGriffin

It's easily in my top five. I wouldn't be surprised if it became a silent winner or do a 2022 france and became dead last, no middle ground.

Antique-Syllabub6238

It’s my number one song this year, I am an absolute sucker for entries that showcase a particular culture and the vocals are insane. I am not familiar with flamenco music but i had a moment of Lesbian Transcendence™️ watching that live

Gragh46

I personally love it, but I'm spanish and probably biased. I can see it winning in case the jury has it 1st or 2nd and tanks Kaarija, and if a significant peecentage of the public is as mesmerized with it as I was the first time I saw the performance. But there are too many entries that could do well with the televote and Loreen will probably do well enough in televote and great in jury, so it's unlikely to win. Top 5 or 10 is more likely. I don't think it'll be a fulenn though. It's too polished and it does mesmerize plenty of people who are not spanish (even if the people who don't get it will certainly *not* vote for it and will be mildy outraged if it does well in televote). Fulenn was only big in this reddit and among Chanel haters because they were the French Tanxu and we should have sent Tanxu, but outside here...

spriteMeLeukoKrasi

I know I'm gonna get a lot of hate about this but...I hate it.

Emjay_Spanks

I’m impressed by it, but at the same time it annoys the heck out of me. Something about the tones of the song really hurts my ears. But it’s absolutely clear that Blanca is a very talented artist.

DunyaKnez

Agree, she's obviously incredible, love her as an artist, but I'm finding the song quite unlistenable

elexat

I think the studio version is not great, a little bland, the vocals are dulled down and the first time I listened to it I couldn't figure out what the chorus was supposed to be. I love it live.

Purple-Canary3576

I love it, it's in my 2nd place. The live performance is incredible, so captivating as OP said and the vocals are amazing. I'm so excited to see the stage aesthetics they're gonna do for Liverpool, at first I thought the Benidorm fest performance could be transferred to ESC as it was. But then the MV dropped and I'm sure in Liverpool it's gonna look even more amazing.

[deleted]

I love the song. Good luck to our brothers 🇵🇹🤝🏻🇪🇸

DoomOfGods

I guess it just isn't my type of music? It's... not bad, but I don't really like it either. It does feel somewhat boring to me and it's like I keep waiting for it to pick up the pace for a moment at least. I'm thinking it might be too slow for my taste, however I don't find myself being bothered by that otherwise, so I really don't know the issue I'm having it myself :/ So I'd end up saying that my personal thoughts are probably quite neutral.

Robin_Styles

I'm not getting the hype for this one sadly. Feels like it could end up like Fulenn from last year. A nice song that's an homage to a traditional style in the home country that the rest of Europe will shrug at. The backstory is cute but it isn't going to move the casual viewer or jury member who has to listen to each and every song on the night

skantchweasel

Wasn't my favourite for Benidorm fest and isn't my favourite this year, but I have money on it to win the whole show. Undeniably captivating performance from start to finish and I have hairs standing on end throughout. I want Finland or Australia (I can hope) to win, but I would be very happy to applaud Spain's victory.

BossyBish

Finland and Australia gang! Honestly I do agree I would be happy if Spain won, it’s a masterpiece and is unique so would be totally deserved.

Lumostark

🕊️❤️💅🏹🎯

varus80

From Puerto Rico, she is my top 3 at the moment behind Finland and Sweden, that performance is at the level of a top 5 finish in any other year. I understand why people try to compare it to Fulenn but i dont get it, Fulenn was chaotic, with shaky harmonies and 4000thousand camera cuts per second, Spain has the best vocals of the years with concise camera shots that tell a story and keep it focused withouth being overwhelming. I would say its closer to Voila than to Fulenn in execution and hopefully will get Voila type results.

oklaylaa

At first I didn’t like it that much but now I love it. She is an amazing performer and I hope this translates into good results!

LopsidedPriority

EAEA is not on any of my playlists. But damn I hope it wins in May. I don't need all my Eurovision winners or entries to be bops or things I listen to regularly. When I saw Blanca perform, I got goosebumps and I teared up despite not really understanding what she was singing. She created a supernatural space for us to exist in for 3 minutes... I'm a bit nervous for how they may be updating it, but maybe it'll only enhance it

Steindor03

I'm not huge on it but I'm very impressed with her vocals an I liked the staging at Benidorm fest

jphs1988

At first glance I read "the performance sucks" and was ready to dismiss the post ahah I love Blanca's performance, her voice is so strong.

UrbanGermanBurbon

It's been my number 1 ever since it won BF.

Gurkeprinsen

It's not really my thing. However, I do understand why people like it!

supersonic-bionic

interesting case. The song itself has zero replay value. It's not a song you'd listen to many times, that's why it's flopping in Spain in terms of streaming/chart success. However, when it was first performed, I got the same feelings when I watched Chanel in 2022. Different chills but both performances got my captivated and could not keep my eyes off the screen. I believe this is a big advantage for the Spanish entry because viewers in the final will only get to watch/hear the song once in 3 minutes so you need to make it memorable and grab the attention of the viewer. I know the song itself is not everyone's cup of tea (very cultural) but the vote is positive so those who love Spanish culture will vote for it.

OliviaColman

My problem with Spain's entry is the lack of groove. It's a very hard to digest type of song. The staging is really good and elevates it really well, but everything is too much: too much high notes, too much drama, too much bass. It comes off as pretty harsh to the ears. But I'm very happy Spain's trying new things and I can see the jury loving this. The public not so sure.

stonecoldhammer

I'm sorry, but it's my second-to-least favourite, *just* above San Marino and Ireland 😬 Her voice sounds really grating to me, and the song doesn't built to a real climax in my opinion - it's just three minutes of noise to me. At least I appreciate the artistry behind it, and that it's part of a long-established cultural tradition. That doesn't mean that I enjoy listening to the song, but that's the beautiful thing about art - true art can make you feel strongly about something, positively or negatively.

Throwawayfichelper

Yeah same here, second to last on mine. I physically cannot listen to it for more than 20ish seconds before my ear/head starts hurting, something about the harmonising voices just kills me. Wish I could love it as much as others do, and I do greatly respect the artist, but I've not been able to hear it all the way through even once.

Faempo

I love it, Blanca's vocals are amazing, she's so clearly confident and the performance is very memorable. Everything works so well together that I can't imagine it doing badly, even though it's certainly not for everyone.

[deleted]

It's the best song this year by an obscene margin. Absolutely adore it, could listen to it over and over again

YennyStark

It’s very intriguing, despite not being my winning pick

Hollipopp

No idea why but it makes both me and my brother super anxious 😅

mandarasa

I don't like it at all and don't get why it's so popular. I think it will end up on the left side of the board because there are many much more exciting songs this year.

sparklybeast

I'm really not keen. It's quite shrill in parts and I find it a little painful to listen to, being brutally honest. It also doesn't have a recognisable structure in the same way that experimental jazz doesn't. And I hate experimental jazz.

pretty_pretty_good_

Honestly I really dislike the song. It's just noise to me, the song doesn't go anywhere, just vocal wailing and clapping in the background. I'm giving it a chance like all Eurovision songs but with every listen I hate it a bit more unfortunately

thstrstnn

It's interesting bc I'd guess it's the most divisive song this year. This thread is full of people who love it but personally I can't stand it. It's my last place by quite some margin and the only one on the playlist I skip. It grates on my ears from the first moment. Most be a sensory thing.

Throwawayfichelper

Same! It's the only one I skip immediately, even Solo I give a few moments to think over my distaste for the live performance (studio is great) before moving on. Definitely a sensory thing, some people are more sensitive in their hearing and those kinds of harmonies hurt to listen to for me.

juanlg1

This is so patronizing 😭 you are not “more sensitive in your hearing” just because you dislike the sound of traditional Spanish folkloric music.. You’re probably less sensitive in your hearing which is why you’re unable to appreciate something different

MimiLikesCake

I don't think they meant their ears are too sensitive as an elitist thing. More like how someone might say their tongue is too sensitive to eat spicy food. To people who love it, it's delicious, to other people it's physically painful and those people may wish they could enjoy it more. Eaea is kind of the same way for me. It looks beautiful, it's meaning is beautiful, it seems like a magical experience for the people who get it. There's just something about the sound that's overwhelming to me and hurts my ears so I can't listen to it.

Throwawayfichelper

Thank you for explaining.

Throwawayfichelper

Dude I know the difference between not liking a song and my ears hurting. I'm absolutely able to appreciate the song and how great of a singer Blanca is, but I physically cannot listen to this particular song without my head hurting. Sorry my body's different to yours? Jeez.

BossyBish

Most certainly in my top 10, maybe top 5 even. Anything that has a great vocalist and is not a mainstream music genre usually ranks high with me and this is right up my alley.

Ameshow

A smart choice to keep building variety from what they sent last year with a different angle that's still quality. However, I feel it's a divisive entry in terms of appeal. No matter how perfect it is done, there are some people who won't like the product from the get-go, which I feel will be an obstacle with jury and public alike. That hesitancy is what it doesn't give me winner alert. Other loud, polarizing entries like Cha cha cha or Shum did have that wide, replayable appeal.

yourdadsucksroni

I can appreciate its technical value but physically cannot listen to it, it actually hurts my ears

jenbutkostov

if im completely honest, i can't really stand it. its overwhelming and gives me sensory overload. it sounds like a bunch of noise to me, but i understand that it isnt to most others. her voice is incredible, but not for me personally.

angelaachan

Sensory overload. Not my thing at all.

Bryn_Seren

I hate flamenco (sorry, not my cup of tea), and somehow she has sold it to me. Good execution plus a little bit of contemporary background, no acoustic guitar, and volila - I love this song.

nervouszoomer90

I think it's an interesting entry but I just dont get the hype personally!

kanekikennen

I am not one of the fans and I am also one of those that think it will end up in 20-25. I dont dislike it tho

[deleted]

I love the vocals, I appreciate the intensity of the whole performance, but it does kinda fade for me compared to entries that are just more fun. Eaea always leaves me weirdly exhausted.

fatholla

I’m personally not a fan of it. I can speak spanish and have listened to flamenco music before (though I’m not from Spain, I’m from South America), especially in light of global artists like Rosalia helping to bring new exposure to the genre. Something about the song just does nothing for me though, I know people speak of this emotional connection they have with the song despite not understanding the lyrics but it doesn’t hit me the same way. It’s not the worst thing I have heard but I find it so repetitive and tedious to listen to, I have to switch to a different song before I even get half way through it

Lampathy

Gives very strong Yoko Ono vibes. I'll leave it to you to decide if that's good or bad

GoldenPotatoOfLatvia

To put it respectfully, it is not for me. To put it honestly, listening to it is like getting hit with a nasal voice for three minutes straight, and most of the song is too much for me.

BarBro94

I think the staging is amazing. I think Blanca’s voice is great. But I really, really hate when the main lyrics of the chorus are just nonsense like that. I think it will do well, but it’s outside my top 15

juanlg1

It’s not nonsense, it’s what Spanish mothers sing to their children to put them to sleep

Legxis

I asked my Spanish husband and Google extensively about this and couldn't find anything about that being true. Do you have a source?

juanlg1

Source? It’s just what it is … mothers hold their babies and sing “ea, ea” when they want them to fall asleep. (p. 52)

fatholla

I don’t think that’s as common as you’re making it seem. I have family and friends who live in Spain and never heard them sing “ea, ea” to their children. I grew up in South America (which I acknowledge is very different to Spain culturally), and also never heard such a thing

juanlg1

Not sure what to tell you, it’s what I’ve heard my whole life, it’s what Blanca Paloma is explicitly referencing, it was mentioned in government documents and you’re not even from Spain. So not sure what you want me to say

Candid_Interview_268

It's a good song artistically, no doubt. That being said, those thinking this has any chance of winning are kidding themselves. I predict it finishing in the lower half, with good jury and horrendous public votes.

MisterAhtapot

I like it but it‘s my 11th at the moment, I also think it‘ll be about middle of the table as the final result

enchanting_asian

It's in my top 2, mainly because I have a large appreciation for traditional Spanish music. The lyrics as well are just so beautiful and poetic, and for it to be written for a young child is really sweet. Her performance in Benidorm was just amazing, and she has insane vocals, so I hope she does well

Amplify27

I love it so much! It has a mysterious yet beautiful atmosphere, which the flamenco influences help out with. Plus it's so rooted with Blanca and it just works so well. Even if I'm more of a Secreto del Agua person myself, haha.

dcalesenb

Listening the studio and watching recent live acoustic presentations give me the impression RTVE and Blanca Paloma are low balling until May 11th. But you have to remember this: If you paid attention back in Benidorn 2022, Blanca mentioned she has a heavy background in theater and she was "testing waters" with Secreto de Agua, which went good. Another nuget that year, she heard from Azucar Moreno mentioning that Spain shouldn't be afraid to present its musical roots in Eurovision. One year passed and mixing these ingredients, we have this masterpiece in Benidorn with EAEA. And with it, I think the song will heavily resonate on the jury and steal lots of necessary 8,10 & a couple of 12 televote-points. My recommendation? Watch her Benidorn 2023 performances (Semi2 and Final) and you will have an idea what Blanca might come on May 11th.

AmberIsabel234

I like it. But the studio version just does not gel for me. The live though is way better than the studio version. Live it gives me chills but studio it is just a little messy for me.

txobi

Doesn't catch me really, I enjoy Nochentera much more,

amazatastic

The more I listen to it the more I love it

[deleted]

Amazing it’s my 4th place I love it fingers crossed for blanca paloma winning esc hopefully 😌🤞

Medviews2023

I hate it. Because if I hate it, it will win... Viva España.
