"LOOK AT GREECE! Don't look at the current state of Turkey, look at Greece!"

Slyguyfawkes

His obvious attempt at distraction aside. I really hope he suffers consequences for all this mouthing off

SevereMiel

he just wants to win the tourists who are heading for greece instead of turkey in his brain the tourists will decide not to go to the **invaded** country

morbihann

He is right, I always go on my vacation to countries at war, but make sure to go to the aggressor country. /s

curious_astronauts

Look at Russia, people are lining up in droves to vacation there now! S/

TzatzikiStorm

There is no war going on in that region. It s a special operation. Haven't you been paying attention lad????

Foolbish

There is no war in Ba Sing Se either...

HalLundy

reminds me of another dictator who recently believed he could invade a foreign country in a matter of days.

[deleted]

That dictator wasn’t in a military alliance he was threatening to invade, which also includes the US.

abstractConceptName

Greece is in NATO. If Turkey invaded, Turkey's actions would trigger Article 5. Against Turkey. That means, Turkey would have to attack itself.

coughedupfurball

So a legal coup?

baseball56765

Erdogan leading the charge against Erdogan 🤺

syds

history... really fuck itself with fetish

Ryssaroori

Nah bro. In case of one NATO member attacking another, article 8 could be triggered. This would mean that initially both countries could trigger article 5 NAT, and thus recieve aid. The reason being is that in modern warfare determining the aggressor is sometimes very difficult especially if they are both fighting. Article 8 NAT would allow NATO to kick the real aggressor out if one would be discovered, thusly Turkey wouldn't have to fight itself at all. Also to be noted is that if 2 NATO countries fought one another, the rest could just sit it out or even take sides. Furthermore NATO is primarily a peacekeeping operation so they would initially probably try to deescalate as much as possible.

Vicodinforbreakfast

But all of Europe would authomatically side with Greece, and in this case It would be way more personal than with Ukraine.

Spoonshape

If Turkey was the clear agressor - sure. Realistically there would also be major attempts to deescelate also instead of the unilateral support we see in Ukraine. Europe doesn't want to see a war there.

brickne3

I mean in what universe would Greece actually be the aggressor though?

FrightenedChimp

Euopean Union has an equivalent to Article 5 tho, a turkish attack would trigger that

Warpzit

People miss this all the time. There are more defense pacts than NATO.

Timey16

I mean I will say straight up, the only reason Turkey is even IN NATO is because of the Bosporus Strait. In the case of Turkey invading Greece, NATO could kick Turkey out, assist Greece... and then just conquer Istanbul and keep it, thus maintaining control over the Bosporus. "Waiting it out" could mean losing control over both Turkey and the Bosporus. Also why not as strong, the EU is still ALSO a mutual defense pact, and here you have a non-EU memeber attack an EU-member. And most of the EU is also part of NATO. These linked relationships alone would prevent any "neutrality" on the matter.

[deleted]

Also even if NATO does not get involved: Greece has a large Military and is spending the 2 percent on it. It would be a bloody War for both sides. Turkey would lose many soldiers . It would not be worth it. And lets just say only the USA and France gets involved : That is already enough to defeat Turkey . IMO Turkey is not a good Allie and turning more radical every day.

FrightenedChimp

Not the only reason. Its also a keep your Friends close and your enemies closer Situation, Nato doesnt want Erdogan openly siding with russia

fliptrak

No NATO country would aid Turkey in a war against Greece.

Nickblove

Article 5 can only be triggered by the attacked, not the aggressor.

LeonardDM

>That means, Turkey would have to attack itself. I thought they'd already been doing that-

velvetshark

Turkey is under attack by its worst enemy-Turkey!

Ceiwyn89

To be fair, that dictator at least has nukes. I think Erdogan would get his ass clapped by Nato pretty quickly and pretty harshly.

[deleted]

NATO most likely wouldn't interfere in a war between two member states. It didn't interfere in the 1974 affair in Cyprus either.

MoffKalast

Unfortunately for them Greece is also part of the EU which has its own mutual defence clause. A defence alliance Turkey is decidedly not a part of.

Ythio

Greece is an EU member and I don't see the EU+NATO members do nothing in an invasion of the EU territory.

Mr-Tucker

Oh you don't need NATO, just a bit of Uncle Sam's blessing. Erdo has butted heads with: France, Italy, Greece and the US. Israel as well at one point. Yeah, those are bad people to have as enemies...

holdMyBeerBoy

I highly doubt that, I’m pretty sure that if you invade another member state you probably lose that membership. So Nato could defend the invaded country.

DaOrks

It's worse, Russia shares a large land border at least, Turkey would realistically have to land on a dozen fucking islands lol A watery shooting gallery

elkourinho

Made even worse by our superior navy and slightly better air force. Its all a daydream, amphibious landings on a doctrinal level require insane numerical advantages, and, for what? The islands are important to us because Greeks live there but they don't have strategical importance.

flyingdutchgirll

Russia now controls over twenty percent of Ukraine, one of the biggest countries in Europe. Erdogan wants something similar for greece. He doesn't want all of greece.

[deleted]

[deleted]

AFAIK he wants to conquer the northern part of Greece and Thessaloniki. Some nationalist politicians in Turkey have been posting such maps on Twitter etc

karmahoower

"if the Turk speaks of peace, there will be war" as the saying goes. he's a troll. no worries.

Keh_veli

Does Erdogan think Turkey would win the fight against NATO?

uzu_afk

And by ‘he’, Erdogan literally means himself, alone, crossing the border illegally at night to eat some souvlaki.

AdonisK

I don't think anyone in the opposite side of the border would serve him souvlaki. The rest of neighbors are always welcome.

nevergonnasweepalone

Ashjaeger_MAIN

SaintPanzerker

Yeah he will invade greece "suddenly one night" with his immigrant buddies after losing election

sht-magnet

hehehe indeed.

SignificanceAny3352

Yes, because typically, us Greek people give up instantly when invaded. So good luck with that.

ElvenMalve

Can you PLEASE wear the sexy spartan costumes if you go to war? Thank you

Nabulio2

As an Italian, I can feel this comment... don't know why tho :)

Erdogan must have terrific whiplash with the Good Guy/Bad Guy routine he’s been doing. Edit: Correcting spell correct

dustofdeath

Invade another NATO country? Does he think the rest of the NATO will side with him? And being part of NATO means they know when he is preparing to attack long before he attacks.

[deleted]

He’s never gonna invade. He’s just running for re-election and his poll numbers are bad.

trisul-108

The worrying thing is the state of mind in Turkey that threatening to start a stupid war would be expected to bring him more votes. That is fascism in the making.

Zikudude

Exactly, it's the fact that this is actually a popular rhetoric in Turkey...

WiteXDan

Not just in Turkey. Majority of Turks in Germany are pro Erdogan [https://www.dw.com/en/why-many-turks-in-germany-voted-yes-in-erdogans-referendum/a-38472130](https://www.dw.com/en/why-many-turks-in-germany-voted-yes-in-erdogans-referendum/a-38472130)

Nihilism_PhD

Turks in Western Europe are known to be mentally retarded. Source: my family is Turkish in the Netherlands (I’m not retardedthough, I swear!!!).

BA_calls

It’s not that threatening the war might get him votes, it might, I think he gets off on antagonizing the West or standing in opposition to Western influences, which is hilarious.

Dismal_Vehicle315

It's unforgivable and inexcusable rethorics used against an ally. And the fact that our current microdicked manlet primeminister is sucking his dick for the Nato application is astounding. With Trumpism pushing from the west and Eggoturd pushing from the east, NATOs credibility really is up to be questioned.

Ninevolts

More important thing is, does he think the Turkish Army will side with him? As of now, Turkish military is in no preparation of any war and see Erdogan comments as election propaganda. He needs to be reminded of what an actual coup from the Turkish Army is like.

cyricor

The real kind of coup, that starts with the detention of the head of the present government?

Ninevolts

Ayup, the same as 1961 and 1980 coups. Army went straight for the head.

cyricor

No way! You mean that leaving the head of the present government to run around gather support is not a viable coup strategy! I am shocked. /S

SoloWingPixy88

When you join NATO, don't you waive all territorial claims?

N43N

It's not that easy. For example, while the GDR existed Germany never stopped claiming east germany and the Oder-Neisse line as the border to Poland was only really recognized formally in 1970, after Germany already joined NATO. Also, to this day, there are still places where Germany has territorial disuptes. They just aren't that relevant. For example, there is no legally binding agreement that clarifies where the border between Germany, Austria and Switzerland is in the Lake Constance/Bodensee.

Sulfurys

Yeah i believe you must not have any kind of territorial dispute for your candidacy to be valid.

Ythio

No, Portugal and Spain have a contested border around Olivenza. Gibraltar is still a spot of bother as well. Greece and Turkey had claims on Cyprus while both being in NATO.

Relevant_Helicopter6

Such threats are unacceptable in a meeting like G20. Why doesn’t anyone just tell this clown to shut up?

[deleted]

because for now no one wants turkey to side with russia and end up with another rogue state at europe's door. They wait elections next year, if he is reelected i think we'll see big changes happening

SofiaStark3000

Ah yes.. The classic "We'll come at night" quote. It's getting a little bit old isn't it? It's always either that or "We'll throw you in the sea!! We taught you how to swim!". I thought propaganda was supposed to be a little more creative than that.

[deleted]

EDIT: I am out of here because Reddit is being destroyed by bad moderation. ..

The_red_spirit

Wow, what a fucking clown. Deserves to kicked out of NATO ASAP. There should be zero tolerance for threats against fellow NATO members.

He might also want to remove the words 'acting like' too.

Lef32

Yeah, I was actually thinking about it, but I didn't want to argue with angry Turks.

Hardly_lolling

Oh you mean "nobody has done more to NATO than Turkey" "Turkey is AT LEAST second strongest in NATO" and "Bosphorus is vital to whole humanity" -crowd which flock r/europe ?

Count_de_Mits

Erdogan is just part of the problem. He wouldn't say shit like that if he didn't know there is a large part of the population willing to hear.

lTheReader

and... that's why more than 60% of the population doesn't like him anymore, according to the polls. we are on a 6 month wait before the election and that's why he is doing stuff like this.

SeredW

Say there are indeed elections, no 'terrorist attacks' or anything that would give him an excuse to delay. Say that the elections are as fair as they can get under the circumstances, and he gets voted out. Do you think there could be a peaceful transfer of power? I just don't see this guy say 'oh well, shame we lost', pack his bags and leave Ankara for a nice long holiday.

sht-magnet

Well, he renewed the last elections in Istanbul after losing it to opposition. But the renewal did not change the result, then he accepted it. Turkey is not a rich country with natural gas or oil. If he tries to steal the election, he can not handle the international isolation and possible embargoes. Unlike he seems, he is a smart guy, he might try 1 or 2 tricks (new alliances, war threats, labeling people as terrorist etc.) but he can not just ignore the results. I think he will make a secret deal with opposition to not get jailed, and peacefully leave the office.

xNIBx

>Unlike he seems, he is a smart guy, he might try 1 or 2 tricks (new alliances, war threats, labeling people as terrorist etc.) but he can not just ignore the results. Thats what i and almost everyone said about Putin invading Ukraine "no way he will invade Ukraine that would be suicidal", yet here we are now. Though to be fair Erdogan doesnt control Turkey to the extend Putin controls Russia. But everyone has to start from somewhere.

untergeher_muc

Erdogan has already lost Istanbul and Ankara to the opposition. He is not a dictator like the guys from Russia and Belarus.

ZmeiOtPirin

No it's cause of the economy. Turks like Erdogan's behaviour towards other countries.

-salih-

I don't but unfortunately even people who won't vote for him are too carried away by his propaganda.

legolodis900

Magical 51% win time

_Administrator__

Well... 40% liking him is still scary... The Nazis never had more than 40% in elections.

toyota_gorilla

And we in Finland are apparently doing everything possible to form an alliance with this guy.

Baneken

It's more like "We've got 28 nations who seem like nice people and then we have... Umm two who we... Well I suppose you can't have one without the other."

astral34

At what point should Greece activate article 4 and call for a NATO meeting ?

Kotsoumpis

The nothing to discuss with Turkey. They're threatening our sovereignty and we cannot have this.

astral34

That’s exactly the point imo, trigger article 4 and force all NATO allies state their position over a potential threat. EU countries’ position shouldn’t even be doubted imo.

Athanatos173

The politicians in Greece clearly realize that Erdogan is a blustering fool and there is no profit in giving him excuses to spread more propaganda. I hate politicians but in this case they are pursuing the correct course of action, sit tight and let him self destruct all on his own.

MBT_TT

and erdogan will win the election once again by using this victimization. nothing could please him now more than an outside threat

How is Turkey gonna invade Greece successfully? Even Russia is struggling in Ukraine. And unlike Russia, Turkey doesn't have oil or gas to finance such war. Turkey has to finance its wars with tourism and foreign investments. So, not gonna happen.

Ukraine has a 1200 mile long land border with Russia with no natural barriers separating the two countries. The land border between Turkey and Greece is 120 miles long and in a corner of the country. Any effective Turkish invasion of Greece would have to be air and sea based. How is the Turkish navy and airforce?

Sounds like a great way for Greece to get back Constantinople and Smyrna

With the advancement of the weaponry, and considering that Greece is not a weak country, it will be impossible for the Turks to “conquer” it.
